  1. hahaha.. totally cool. Do they have an "e day" too for the euler's number ? ------------------------------------ I found some more really interesting facts and sites about PI.. here you go:
  2. Ya there is StuffIt for Windows. You can grab it at: http://my.smithmicro.com/stuffit-expander-windows.html
  3. Hi, I'm sure most of you have used some sort of Online Bookmarking Service to keep your list of bookmarks accessible from everywhere. One site that has come up recently is SaveThis.Com by CNN. I've been using it for a while with more than satisfactory results. First of all, this site is designed with very little graphics and the bare minimum necessary information - which makes it a really quick loading site. Storing your bookmarks happens in a jiffy - NO DOWNLOADS/CLIENTS NEEDED. All you have to do is go and register an account (FREE) for yourself and they'll provide you with a small Link Button that you can drag & drop onto your browser bookmarks toolbar. When you are visiting any site - just clicking on that toolbar button will open up a small pop-up window and allow you to add that site with proper Title & under the right Category in your account. I'd used lots of such services earlier - but found none to be as fast, easy-to-use & reliable as this one. I highly recommend it to you - this way, you NEVER loose your bookmarks and can get to them from any corner of the world.... Have fun.
  4. Yeaaaay... the first ever hitchhikers movie - that'll be really interesting to see. Do you know of any sites with more details about it ?
  5. What is the secret behind your nick ? Or in other words - how & why did you come up with the nickname you're using on this board or elsewhere ? The idea for this post struck me yesterday when Nils asked me why did I choose this nick. This isn't something NEW that I've learnt - but it'll be kind of a revelation for all of us - and the way we all think - so I'm posting it here. You should followup this post with your nick and a short explanation as to how you came across it. Here's a starter: My nick - microscopic^earthling: I listen to a lot of very hard electronica/psychedelic trance music, and one such psych. band is named Earthling. They came up with an album containing a track titled Microscopic. On the backside of the CD cover it was listed as: Microscopic - Earthling ....... as soon as I saw it I knew THIS had to be my nick. I've been using it for ages now. Another point that struck me about this nick was the sense of propriety & humility associated with it. I consider myself no more than microscopic when counted against the world population or as a matter of fact the limitations of my knowledge when pitched against the infinite amount of knowledge that no one can ever acquire even during the course of 1000 lifetimes... so there... So..... what's the secret behind yours ? Have fun ------------------------ I feel rather stupid now, coz szupie had started a similar thread sometime back and I completely forgot about it and started another concurrent thread. Lets see if I can get hold of him and merge these two.
  6. Unfortunately I grew up all alone - no brothers or sisters. On top of that both my parents are doctors - so I'd see them only at early mornings and late nights. I'd the whole day to myself and every passing day I discovered something new to keep myself busy and not feel lonely (apart from school). I guess, I'd never know how it's like growing up with siblings. But I think a younger sister would have been nice to boss around on
  7. Hi, A couple of days back there was this query floating around regarding the tiniest OS ditributions available. I think I'd posted something on OpenQNX which used to come on a single 1.44MB floppy including an extremely decent GUI. Here I've found another list on Google Directories that covers almost all the working Linux Distributions that come under the size of 10MB. For all the Linux fans out there - this is a gold mine. Get to it @ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Following up on this, if anyone's interested in the full blown distros, goto: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Have fun
  8. Holy cow. That is INDEED Euler's number. How on earth did you come across that ? Sooooo... google probably picked that figure as their lucky charm eh ? Well nothing could have been more appropriate I guess. Now I know, when I start off a company I'm going to put in a figure similar to that of PI's value as my capital investment
  9. Hehe... sorry if I sounded too technical & dry. I'll keep that in mind and try make is easier from next time :DI came back with an analogy that could help you understand it a little better. On shared servers, even if you have your own domain - compare it to your office telephone number with a epabx electronic exchange box behind it. Everyone calls up your office at the same number and then are redirected to the correct extension. When you call up the number - you don't get to your own office but to the main office receiving center (similar to reaching vDeck using the IP). You can be reached only by knowing the correct extension or in the case of web-sites by adding a port number/subdirectory after the IP. So there...
  10. Hi, As long as those mp3's do not violate any copyrights and are authentic compositions by you/your band - I don't see a reason why you can't put them up. Always remember that Xisto has a high Google ranking and that is solely because we all strive to keep this board as clean as possible and adherent to all the legal intricacies Anyway, as I said - as long as those mp3's are original works you won't have problem putting them up - though you might want to get a upgrade (if you haven't done it already) account - so you have a lot more disk space to accomodate your mp3's. Also the site can be in English & Spannish - both. That isn't a problem at all. Cheers
  11. Hi all, I just came across this while searching for some mathematical principles. Do you know that there's this foundation named Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) whose sole work is to search for the largest prime number known to man ? Every couple of years they come up with a new number only to beat their earlier score. The last one found and the largest currently known prime, 2^24036583 â 1, was found by Josh Findley through the GIMPS project on May 15, 2004. It is 7,235,733 digits long, almost one million digits more than the previous record holder. Here's a direct quote from the InfoPlease.Com site: As you can see there's a very lucrative prize waiting for you if YOU happen to be the one with the new Prime in the block. Read more about it at: 1. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0920820.html 2. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/1693364.stm 3. http://www.mersenne.org/primes/
  12. We've compiled a pretty decent list on Graphic Design Resources based on members' contributions. You can take a look at it here: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/81982-topic/?findpost=1064289453 I'm sure you'll find a lot of links there for your Photoshop Filters as well as other photoshop resources.
  13. Quite likely. End of Gothic I the main character was trying to break down an immense force-field surrounding that world - that prevented people from venturing out. In effect they were locked up in a world covered with this inverted see-through glass bowl. I guess when the barrier raptures at the end - he's thrown off and thus found lying unconcious for a few days and that's where the second story starts. Hows the second one btw ?? I've seen the graphics and like it immensely... but whats the storyline ?
  14. Ya you're quite right. You need 10 for the starter package and an additional 50 (so 10+50 = 60 total credits) for the upgrade. I said 70 because those extra 10 credits will go towards keeping your account alive initially. Otherwise if you apply with just 60 - immediately after getting upgrade your account will dip down to ZERO so there....
  15. If you've got 50 credits you should make some more posts and get yourself about 70 credits. Then apply for a starter package at first immediately followed up by an upgrade - if that's what you want You'll be able to get the full blown account immediately. All the best
  16. Here's how it works: You get a certain number of hosting credits which directly depends on the quantity & quality of posts you made on this board. The board employs a very advanced credit system that checks your posts for keywords/links/quotes/number of words and weighs out your post against a scale to allot you a certain number of hosting credits. Quoting other sites/articles/posts will get you far less credits than coming up with some unique post on your own. One line posts literally don't get you any credits while a good tutorial might get you over 10 credits in ONE Post only. In case you're spamming/copying/plagiarising from other sites your credits can get reduced drastically (done by the mods or the automated system) and you might end up loosing your hosting too. For every real world day that passes by exactly 1 credit is deducted from your hosting credits total. Thus, if you've got around 15-20 hosting credits, you can be sure your account wouldn't get suspended even if you take off for 2 weeks - that'll deduct only 14 credits from your account. On the other hand, when you request a starter or upgrade package - 10 & 50 hosting credits are chopped off at one go. But this is the only time when your hosting credits get reduced in a big bulk. Take this as a virtual currency that you're using to pay for your hosting. Once you've got your upgrade package at 50 posts (and account deducted by 50 credits) - your credits will never dip down by more than 1 per day. Only time your hosting credits can dip below ZERO and become negative is if you've been inactive for too long and your credits (automatically reduced by 1 everyday) falls below zero and then goes into the negative domain. In such a case your hosting account will be suspended. You've to come back and make 4-5 good posts to pull it out of the negative region to say, +ve 5-6 hosting credits. If you do so, within a short period (less than a day) your hosting account will get re-activated automatically again. Last but not the least, keep in mind that certain forums on this board are marked as "NO POST COUNTS. Posting in these forums WILL NOT increase your post count or increase the HOSTING CREDITS either. Do not go about wondering why your post count/hosting credit didn't shoot up after posting in these forums. Examples are: The Lobby, Life Talk, Music, TEST etc. Hope this helps P.S. Don't worry about bad english, as long as your messages are clear and legible.
  17. You cannot get to your site directly like that by quoting the IP - unless you have your own hosting server with a dedicated IP which maps onto your domain https://xyz.xyz/ and vice-versa. When ONE server (like Xisto) handles multiple domains - all of those domains will refer/resolve the same IP but when you actually connect to the server using https://xyz.xyz/ - the server resolves your domain to the same ip BUT to a different port number that has been assigned/mapped onto your domain name. This happens behind the back and you've no way of knowing directly - the feel you get is that you connected to port 80 (http port) of your server. The concept is somwhat similar to that of setting up of Virtual Hosts in Apache. It's either redirected to a particular port OR as szupie stated - to some subdirectory/folder/subdomain under the main ip. Loading the page with the primary ip will always take you to your hosts web-page. regards
  18. Wooo.. it's THAT EASY ?? Thanks a lot deivid.. lol.. I'd tried everything except good old drag & drop.... And I was wondering all this while - why I couldn't use the downloaded extensions like Thunderbird, which lets you load the extensions off your hard drive. Thanks
  19. Have you tried out Project Entropia ?? The basic version is free, i.e. you can play through the whole world without having to pay anything. In fact you can even win real world money by exchanging the game currency for dollars. On the other hand you can also invest real currency and get them converted to the game currency in order to buy more equipment/accessories. I've been dying to play it - I got myself registered and downloaded the client as well - but bad luck on my part - it just refuses to connect over my slow dialup line. Dunno why though - coz their site clearly stated that you CAN play it over dialup...
  20. I haven't played Gothic 2 - but I'm a die hard fan of Gothic 1 and have played it innumerable times over strecthes of months at a time. I admit I was kid of a Gothic freak - I liked the story line and the massive explorable world so much. I could probably guide you through Gothic 1 blindfolded and I figured out over 1001 (literally) ways to get your XP and money to the max. Am eagerly waiting to grab Gothic 2. Hows the storyline compared to the first one ?? Graphics, I know about - coz I've seen plenty of screenshots. Could you write a small review of Gothic 2 yourself including some degree of details about the storyline ?? Thanks :DCheers...Pheww... finally found someone who's played Gothic... I'd started thinking I was the only Goth around
  21. By default, your ftp root directory is the one which you're normally placed in upon a ftp login. If you cpanel login is "someone" then for Xisto your ftp login would either place you in a directory /home/someone or /home/someone/public_ftp - depending on how you've configured ftp from cpanel. In case you want to find out what your present directory is, right after logging in - type shell> pwd "pwd" is a unix command that tells you what your Present Working Directory is. Put the directory name that's shown as your ftp root in the uploader program. That should get you started. Otherwise, for Xisto you could just try out either of those - /home/yourcpanelname or /home/yourcpanelname/public_ftp ... Should work without a hitch for both.
  22. Apache works the best for me too - and even more so if you're running it on Linux. Have you tried out MiniApache yet ?? That might help you get your test server running. It's compact and lightweight and runs with the PHP Mod on NT/2K. Very easy to configure it too - at least far less tedious than the full blown apache. You can grab it at: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ . It's worth a shot
  23. It would help if you'd mentioned what CS:S is ? I don't think many of us are acquainted with that term. When you make such posts you should try to be as clear about your query as possible and avoid confusing acronyms (or at least provide more details about them) - if you want a good response. Messages such as this would hardly elicit any response from the readers...
  24. I'm even more pathetic. Got only a 12/20 .. lol.. what does that mean ?? I dont trust anyone ?? lol
  25. The rank is actually your ranking in the Army System game. You've to actively take part in the game to get yourself a good ranking. To start off - click on the Army System link right on top of the page between Arcade & Reputation. Next you've to create a race of soldiers for yourself, buy some weapons/armor, train some soldiers and set off the game. Very soon you'll see that rank and lots of money popping up in the left panel. It's got nothing to do with the number of posts you make or your reputation points. The ranking system is completely independent of them and entirely depends on how well you play that army systems game. Good luck
