haha.. yeaah qwiji.. completely agree with you again.. What I'm going to say is so goddamned cliche - but I'll still go ahead and say it - "East Or West, Linux is the BEST".. lol.. (sic.) .. anyways.. have you ever given QNX a try ? That's a damned good system too and the GUI (named Photon) is Ultra Smooth and fast. Only problem they don't have their drivers organized properly.. you'll have to look around all over the net.. Grab another of the free downloads at http://www.qnx.org/content/qnx/en.html . The .iso distro - runs directly off the CD (like Knoppix LiveCD or Lindows) except that this OS has been around much longer than those two. As also you can make a native installation from the same CD onto your HDD... The shell is pretty similar to bash - though with very little pre-configuration. They also had another ditro with a trmendously scaled down version of the same OS (surprisingly including the GUI) - that could run off a couple of 1.44meg floppies. I found the repository yesterday (something like openqnx.org) - but lost the link again. However, try googling for "smallest os with gui" and you'll get to the site - or else check the shoutbox for the link. It should be there somewhere in yesterdays shouts... All the best

Hi guys, I searched about this particular Linux Distro after I read about it in a post by MajesticTreeFrog ( http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ ) - and I found out that they still have that offer OPEN. They're giving away free CDs for Intel, PowerPC and AMD64 Platform.. They even ship as many copies as you want FREE OF COST INCLUDING SHIPPING CHARGES. This is your golden chance lol... HURRY HURRY.. GRAB YOUR COPY OF LINUX.. @ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Do it today and spread the word around.. Linux is the OS of the day, year, the epoch...

There's a Top500 List of SuperComputers around the world - it's compiled once a year. The 2004 list it existant - but the 2005 one is still being compiled and due to be put up soon. I forgot the exact site - it was something like top500.org - but you can find it by googl-ing "Top500 +supercomputers" - no spaces between "Top" & "500". Well what the hell..I can not be lazy and do it as well. lol.. here it is: https://www.top500.org/ - you'll find all the info about the latest developments in supercomputing front here..Cheers

Help me create a PHP e-Classroom How do I do it ?
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to kokushta's topic in Programming
Can you zip up the files and post them here - maybe if I take a look and see the actual thing I could help you figure out a way.. Thanks -
Yes you can firedoor - anytime. It's as easy as setting the DNS records for your domain to point to the nameservers of ashtahost (ns1.astahost.com & ns2.astahost.com) and then inform the admins. That's it.. you'r domain will be directly linked to your web-site on Xisto. That's how mine works too.. Even your cPanel login will become a login to a certain port of your domain name.-----------------------------Also next time you make a post - please be more specific about the topic. It helps a lot if your topic describes your post content in brief rather than having a "Just checking" - which could mean anything. More often this wouldn't pique the interest of the readers at all and your post will get very few responses. As an exampe am changing your topic title to "Can I upgrade subdomain to own domain at Xisto?"m^e

Help me create a PHP e-Classroom How do I do it ?
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to kokushta's topic in Programming
Umm.. how about reading the whole content of the textbox into an array using php and then use the php "echo" command to spit it out as html in the neighbouring box.. but as an inbetween step you have to implement some really strong html syntax checking - or else the translated code would get dumped as pure code in case even one tag is missing.. but in a way that would work out to the learners advantage - he'll know where it's gone wrong..give it a try.. damned good idea.. if you need more elaboration on this - i'm around :Pall the best -
Considering the pace at which computing is advancing these days - I'd say it's just a matter of 4-5years nowadays from the birth of a new language till it reaches a certain maturity.. For example, consider Perl (doesn't matter whether its a mainstream programming language or a scripting lang) - the first version (1.000) came out way back in December, 1987 and it took almost 16 years till Nov, 2004 to get to version 5.8.x ..In contrast PHP which almost started as an offshoot of Perl in 1995 has already become so mature and reached version 5.x within a span of 10 years... Most of the new languages would probably be based on some old language format - thus, providing it with a rock-solid base with a host of pre-defined features.. Evolution of such a language doesn't cost much time and effort...and so they grow quite fast.. For more information on History of Computer Languages, either google the phrase or visit: 1. https://www.levenez.com/lang/ 2. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ 3. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Hope this helps

Suggestion/querry: Art Forum? Just tossing up an idea.
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to ndhill's topic in Web Hosting Support
nice idea ndhill.. maybe the admins will take it up.. this forum was still in its teething stages even a few days back. Now it's gained quite a few good members and is gearing up really well. The forums are a bit unorganized and lacking in a lot of categories when compared to Xisto. But soon... All will be good with the great support that you guys are providing. -
Hi , For all the dotnet junkies out there - lets all chip in and compile the most comprehensive list of Freeware ActiveX components out there on the net. Kindly make absolutely sure that the component is 100% FREE. We don't want any shareware listings here. Here's one for a starter: Pure Components NicePanel (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) - ever get tired of those boring square panels with limited extensibility (unless you are ready to immerse yourself into the .NET GDI+) that Visual Studio offers ?? Here's you way out: use Purecomponents NicePanel - a 100% free activex component (you have to regsiter with their site to get a free license - no "fineprints" involved). If allows you to make Square, Rounded or Chamfered Panels with inbuilt Gradient Shading, Header & Footer Bars with custom graphic capabilities & the list goes on - and easy to use as hell. Besides for textboxes placed within this panel, you do not need to meticulously place labels besides them - just add the label to the TAG Property of the textbox, and nicepanel with Nicely Position the Label for you beside the textbox. Cool ay ? I'm mighty damned impressed with this activex code and within a matter of a day it has helped medo a complete makeover of my interface - which looks so good now that everytime I look at it, I'm forced to utter..."Damn I'm Good!!" or is it... "Damn NicePanel is GOOD!!" Have fun toying with it n cheers... =========================== Download Link: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ =========================== Don't forget to register with them to get your free license.: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Here are some more GUI components to spruce up & beautify your application. Here's a description right from their site: =============================== FramePlus - The standard Visual Basic 6 frame control does not support applications using an XP manifest - the interior of the control is rendered as a black 'blob'. Frameplus solves this problem including full XP theme support, and providing a set of useful features missing from the standard frame control. Windows XP Themes: Full support for Windows XP Visual Themes, rendering the look and feel of the FramePlus according to the active theme. Theme support can be disabled or overridden if required - Styles: FramePlus offers a number of standard and custom styles - Child Controls: Depending on the Enabled and Checked state of the frame, child controls can be automatically enabled or disabled - Checkbox: You can display a checkbox to the left of the caption text. ButtonPlus - ButtonPlus is an alternative to the Visual Basic command button control that includes a range of features to give your buttons more functionality and visual appeal. Windows XP Visual Styles: Full support for Windows XP Visual Styles, rendering the look and feel of the ButtonPlus according to the active theme. Visual Style support can be disabled or overridden if required - Formatting options: ButtonPlus allows you to specify alternate positioning alignments for graphics and text and allows border and outline colors to be configured - Drop down support: The ButtonPlus control can style itself to look like a drop down button, including split modes. Using the DropDownItems collection, the button can automatically display dropdown menus. ScrollBarPlus - You've finished your great looking user interface, but something is missing that you can't quite put your finger on. That's right - the Visual Basic 6 scrollbars aren't drawing with a themed effect, and nothing you can do will persuade them to do so. ScrollBarPlus solves this problem, providing full theme support and with the added bonus that the ScrollBars cannot get keyboard focus (a nasty feature of the in-built Visual Basic scrollbars). ================================ Download the 3-in-1 bundle for free at: http://www.innovasys.com/product/freeware?cpid=frpad .:: Cheers ::. P.S. I'd this post up at Xisto.Com too - but since I didn't get much response from the programmers out there - am making a repost in here hoping to get a better response..

HI, This is a very old & well-known bug in Visual Studio 2003 and I hear it's been recitifed in the 2005 version. But till I get my hands on it (which isn't hapenning soon enough) I still got to use the old VS2003. The problem is: if you mess around with the code that lies in the region "Windows Forms Designer Generated Code" - the form controls just VANISH when you load it up in designer mode. They just won't come back however hard you try - and all you're left with is a BLANK form. Not that it hampers with your code from running in any way - but you can't see the layout of your controls anymore and kind of grope around in the dark... Does anybody know any solutions to this ??? Urgently needed if there is one... Thanks a lot P.S. A little bit of details as to where it's going wrong ----------------------------------------------------------------- Do you see the last line - that's where I've introduced the keyword "Shared" after the "Friend" keywork - and that's what makes all the controls VANISH COMPLETELY from the designer. If I remove the shared keyword and try - all controls are BACK !!! But I NEED to use the shared keyword there for other modules/classes to be able to access and manipulate that panel. This is very funny and extremely inconvenient at the same time.. So, can anyone suggest a workaround ??

Why don't you start by visitng http://www.mysql.com/ and http://php.net/ - if you aren't bothered by a little reading - these sites have plenty of information to get you started.. These two are too vast topics to cover in any post. Alongwith, you should grab copies of MySQL and PHP (for whatever platform you're running on - Windows or Linux) from those sites and install them on your system. Only then those tutorials will come to good use. Nothing like doing it hands on and testing it out right then. You could do it at the Xisto server as well but that a slow process.. use own own system for testing instead.. All the best

Upgrade Account? what do you get?
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to harriko's topic in Web Hosting Support
Nope - the upgrade applies to the personal hosted account. Since you've around 106 posts - you are quite eligible for it. The criteria is 60 posts (50 additional posts over the first 10 for the starter package). What you get is increased diskspace(150MB), increased bandwidth (2GB per month) and many more such extension on all the other cPanel features. If you are seeking an upgrade - you should make a post in the "Request Free Hosting" forum. -

Online Coding Contest By Google!
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to skpanda's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Yeaah.. not too many programmers around - except for a couple of people dabbling in php. I've tried starting a few on .net but alas - not one single reponse -
marjinn - your code works but there's one big flaw. Once you know the name of this page (if you are a regular visitor you'd know for sure) - then you can totally bypass this authentication page and go to that success.html directly. Nothing can stop you....even if you give the page an extremely cryptic name - all you need to do it note it down (just copy paste it )... Here's another solution I found - and gave it a try too on my server.. It works without a hitch. The authentication is done in the Xisto cPanel style - exactly like the box that pops-up in your browser asking for login/pass combo. The concept is to NOT HAVE the authentication code in another web-page that loads your "success.html" - but to have it embedded in the success.html ITSELF. That'll completely block you out from success.html if you don't enter a pair of valid credentials. This way even if you know the name of the page - ie success.html here - your page won't be displayed to you unless you can verify yourself.... Here's the working code from what I learnt today. <?php// HTTP Header-based Authenticatoion test // This is the actual function that matches the username/password combo with a list// in some database or flat filefunction validate_user ($username, $password){ // This is just a sample array containing two username/passes // In your real program, you should ideally load a matching password // from some database or file depending on the username entered and check // accordingly $userlist = array('micro' => 'pass', 'earth' => 'pass'); // Checks if the password matches the corresponding user if (isset($userlist[$username]) && ($userlist[$username] == $password)) { return true; // If match --> return true } else { return false; // No match --> return false } }// This is the actual code that makes the browser pop-up the authentication box and then// display the rest of your page if authentication goes fine.if (!validate_user($_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_USER'], $_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_PW'])){ // Feel free to modify the Basic realm="......" part, i.e. the string within the // quotes (""). I've used "Protected Zone" here --> you can change it to whatever...That's // what will appear in your pop-up login box. header('WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="Protected Zone"'); header('HTTP/1.0 401 Unauthorized'); // Display a custom error message - change it to whatever you feel like echo "You didn't say the magic word. Access denied."; exit;}else { // Show a welcome message if user/pass combo is correct echo "Welcome to the Protected Zone."; // Rest of your protected page goes here // ............ // ............................ // ....................................... }?> I don't think much is needed in the way of an explanation - coz I inserted a good amount of comments in there... Still here's a brief note on the parts that I missed out on. The $_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_USER'] and $_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_PW'] are global variables that contain the username and password supplied by the user during the auth. process. Notice the part. When your browser receives the 401 header, it pops up that dialog box for user/pass. On validation, it loads the rest of your page - if its a mismatch or Cancel is pressed - the code exits right then and denies access to the rest of the page. The Basic realm in the first line of the header makes the current page a part of the authenticated realm you are trying to enter. Note: ANY OTHER PAGE with the same Basic realm="xxx" header will be thus accessible with JUST ONE LOGIN. If you want to protect another set of pages for a different group of users, just use a different Basic realm name for those pages. Also, once you enter a set of valid credentials, your browser wouldn't ask you again - even if you reload the page. You're authenticated for good till you close that window and exit the site in process. That's the only flip side of this code - it doesn't provide you with a clean method to LOGOUT, although you could use a combination of cookies/session with this to achieve a logout effect. More on that later... Hope this helps

Hi, I just happened to come across this - the Second Fastest SuperComputer in the World developed by a collaboration of California Digital, an Indian company based in both US and India and Intel. It's shaped by an immense linux cluster using the Beawolf Cluster Architecture. This happened quite sometime back (middle of last year) but I stumbled upon it a couple of days back. Here are some excerpts from different sites: More links:1. http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2004-05-19/news/27399538_1_teraflop-supercomputer-earth-simulator 2. http://www.networkworld.com/category/opensource-subnet/ 3. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ 4. http://news.a.com.com/ 5. http://www.tie.org/view_news?id_news=12 6. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ The whole point of putting this news up here to go Hip Hip Hoooraaaaah for Linux my best-est, favourite-est OS. Another BIG Feather in its cap, PLUS, I happen to be a very patriotic Indian - so am extremely PROUD of what an Indian Company could do. Windows - Keep dreaming unsuccessfuly to achieve something even 1/100th of this.... roflmao

I completely sympathize with you Ploforia. I am in a very similar fix as yours.. Me too like a dump f*** had fallen into the trap of getting domain name for real cheap - but guess from who ?? None other than Yahoo!Domains. They had this offer of names at $4.99 if you registered for 5 years. That's what I did - but somewhere along the line something went wrong with their payment gateway. My credit card never got charged for it. Now under ideal circumstances if they don't receive payment - they don't do anything right ?? No money no honey BUT.. bloody b@$t***s went ahead and registered my domain for 5 YEARS - and now it's COMPLETELY BLOCKED and out of my hands. Whois of course shows it's registered to ME and My Company - all details point to me... As a followup I sent over 40 emails to their domain tech-support and didn't receive a SINGLE response - not even a goddamned autoresponder message.. I even offered to pay more and get it back - but still NOTHING... This issue has been going on since December last year. Presently I'm trying to get in touch with them over phone - lets see how far that gees before meeting up with a blank wall. This is absolutely pathetic and unbecoming of a company of Yahoo's repute. I even paid a company called Sedo.Com who can negotiate with other companies and grab your domain for you. Even they weren't succesful in getting it from Yahoo. However my next purchase through GoDaddy.Com went really well - and I'm more than satisfied with their service and I think I'm going to stick to them for all my future purchases. I highly recommend their service to you too - and if you register for 10 years at one go - the price comes down to around $72 for the entire period.. I don't really mind $7 per year for a domain name. Quite cheap I'd say All the best with your effort...

Ssh: What Are The Advantages And Stuff ?
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to szupie's topic in Computer Networks
It doesn't have anything to do with being better than FTP. SSH has a counterpart in almost all the protocols like telnet (SSH was actually a replacement for it) and then other protocols like FTP, HTTP started using it too..which gave rise to protocols like SFTP & HTTPS. It's called making connection over the Secure Socket Layer or SSL, in other words... Similarly your SSH or Secure Shell, is the SSL form of the older Telnet protocol. It doesn't make life EASY for you in any sense - just that all your communication on the net is safe from unwanted troublemakers.. You wouldn't want all your credit card details to fall into the wrong hands when you are buying something online - WOULD YOU ??? That's the way it makes life easier for you - by letting you heave out a sigh of contentment/satisfaction (knowing your data is still safe) after your purchase goes through -

Ssh: What Are The Advantages And Stuff ?
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to szupie's topic in Computer Networks
This should probably go into Networking and that's where I'm moving it.. no probs szupie - it's just a mouse click away First we begin by quoting a definition of SSH as Wikipedia ( https://www.wikipedia.org/ ) defines it: Here's the difference. All the earlier protocols like telnet, ftp, http - all communicated by sending PLAIN TEXT messages over the internet. As in when you FTP or Telnet-ed to you shell, your username/password combination would be sent over as plain text - can you imagine what would happen if one of those creatures of the dark happened to be snooping on your outgoing connection with a packet sniffer ?? He would just have to decode those packets and right in the middle of them he'd find all your login ids/passes in complete plain text. Not something you'd really want to happen to you Ah well, for a normal user, you'd just dump that account (if it was on a free server) and just register yourself for a new one. But what if it had lots of crucial/official sensitive data that you wouldn't want someone else to get their hands on ?? And the fact that your life/job/everything is at stake and you must protect it with all your might..what then ? That's where the SSH protocol comes in.. It started as a replacement of telnet, such that all such communication would be encrypted at one end prior to transmission and and decrypted back at the other end before handing the commands/logins over to the server. Eventually the SSH got imbibed into all the existing protocols giving rise to SFTP, HTTPS etc... You might have notice that all such encrypted communication is much slower than loading a normal page/downloading a file using the older protocols. All that high-degree of encryption/decryption at both ends account for the time lag. That's the FLIP Side - but in constrast what you get in SSH is a fairly good bit of security from any normal prying eyes. At least with the present SSH-2 it would either take a supercomputing cluster or a huge cluster of extremely powerful cpu's to crack your ssh encrypted transmission in real time - and that kind of equipment isn't readily available to everyone... (luckily.. ) The method of encryption is somewhat similar to PGP I believe. When the connection is first set up, the server hands over a Public Encryption Key to the client. The client can use this key to encrypt the data for transmission, but cannot decode it using this key. The actual decryption happens on the server end using a Private Key - which is generated alongwith the Public Key but never handed out to anyone. The message can thus be converted back into its normal form using ONLY this Private Key. Imagine a lock with two keys - one used to lock it and the other to unlock. These two keys cannot be used interchangeably. So ONLY whoever has the unlocking key can get access to the room... (lol.. bad analogy). There might be multiple copies of the locking key so many different client can lock the room up - but only one person with the master unlock key can go about opening it up... That's it.. I guess this should explain the whole idea somewhat.. Refer to wikipedia or just google for the explanation of SSH and you'll get many more sites with far better explanation than this...Hope this helped -
Naah no probs - I was learning how to use microtime myself - you always learn much better if you try explaining what you've picked up so far - that way you rethink the whole topic from a different perspective and enables you to capture all the nuances attached to it - which would elude you under normal circumstances. It should, because microtime always returns a different value (far far different from the one when you run it the first time, and so on, every subsequent time) - so if you append that string of numbers to the name of your file (as I'd done - Report12345....txt) you'd get completely random numbered files everytime you run the script. I just tested out this one and it worked absolutely fine for me...I put the whole thing into an index.php and everytime I loaded it a new file (like Report12345.txt, Report67123.txt etc... ) got created in my dir... Glad to know you got your prob solved - but keep this routine in mind though (the microtime part especially)... It comes to real good use, when you want to generate completely random html files that act as email activation links - as most of the sites do to verify your email address' authenticity. I'm try to implement that on my site now. Will post the code once I'm successful
