  1. Yeah, im running tightVNC as a service and I am able to use the welcome screen to login and logout users fine! I havent tried connecting while the computer is already on the login screen as hasn't been logged in yet while its been on though.
  2. As xboxrulz said, start with basic. thats what I did and it has given me a great understanding of programing. From there you can work with many different languages. But it can be hard to change languages sometimes, so make a choice that you are going to stick with for a while!good luck-jimmy
  3. thanks! i tried the double colon trick, didn't work. I have also tried using the computer name as they are in the same workgroup - that didn't work either! So i have now switched to tightVNC, and it works fine! and its free and open source! Works well, no major problems so far and i can do what I want - thanks for your help!-jimmy
  4. What is your colour quality? When my monitor is set on low (16 bit) i get white edges around the icons, but on higher (32 bit) its better!hopefully this helps-jimmy
  5. thanks heaps for this! I'll forward it all to my friend and see what he thinks - and if he thinks its a viable idea still! Ill get back to you if there is anything else he wants to know!if anyone else has good tutorials sites - I'd love to hear of them!Thanks-jimmy
  6. I have tried that and get an error - connection reset by peer, the connection was closed unexpectedly and connection aborted (10053). These errors come up almost instantly after i click ok for the password. as soon as i click reattempt, another error comes back up!thanks for your help so far!-jimmy
  7. Hi, I recently installed RealVNC so that I can look after a remote computer on my network. I have installed the server on computer a and the client on computer b! The server is running in service mode and has been setup with a password for authentication. My first problem comes when I try to connect from B to A. I get different errors messages including Connection Timed Out and Connection Refused. I have unblocked the ports on windows firewall (ports 5920 and 5820 (thats what im using)) and opened a series of ports on my router to allow access. Using command prompt and netstat -a I found that the computer is using the port 5920. Whats strange is that when i add a client on the server computer (A) and have the listening client open on B, it connects! i get a dialog window and can see the other computer. But when i try to connect from B to A, it wont work! When i attempt to connect with the Java viewer on port 5820 i get the VNC logo and a java prompt. It then says which computer do you want to connect to i click ok, it asks for the password then I get a error. the viewer then sits there doing nothing. Thanks, -jimmy Notice from BuffaloHELP: Topic title MUST be specific. Refrain from just "help ..." next time.
  8. Hi all,I have a friend who, for his extended IT project is interested in making a website partly out of php. When he asked for advice my first thought was here. I would like to know some good websites, tutorials etc that he can use to introduce himself to php (he hasn't done much before). He is interested in making a simple login/subscription service where you can signup and then login to a 'members only' page. Any ideas and code samples that you have to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,-jimmy Notice from BuffaloHELP: Jimmy, you need to work on making topic title very specific.
  9. you can also use these steps to hide a user account! instead of changing the dword value to 1, make it 0. This will hide the user account from the login screen (this is assuming that you are using the welcome screen). An easier way, if your not quite uip to modifying the registry is to press Ctrl + Alt + Del TWICE at the welcome screen, this will bring up a login dialog. Enter administrator and the password into the login dialog and you will be logged in!@Downlinker - Im not sure, they may have changed the registry path in vista, but i cant see why not!jimmy
  10. heres an updated link > http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  11. Disabling your firewall is not a good idea! I go with everyone else, just forward the ports you need! If you are using the Internet while hosting games - disabling the firewall is not the way to go!
  12. I have had a look at the quarantine area of the program - it says there is nothing there! I looked in the Program Files Directory and the total space came to 15.5MB - no where near the size.@HellFire - do either of these programs have real-time scanning of files? Cause thats what I like about SWT, it scans files as they are opened, it monitors extension changes and informs me when anything is trying to change startup files etc.thanks-jimmy
  13. You still didn't mention which language you are coding in. But basically all you need to do is have a timer counting each second, and as each time the timer fires, take 1 off the time. When the value equals 0 then then stop the timber and enable the button. -jimmy In VB.NET Timer_Tick Do Until Count = 0 Count &= -1 Loop 'enable button nowEnd Timer
  14. I recently installed Spyware Terminator after reading a review on this board about it being really good! And so far I'm impressed, it works well, it's fast and caught the spyware on my computer!I only have one problem... When I had a look at my Installed Programs list, I found that Spyware Terminator was taking up a grand total of 18.4GB, yes thats Gigabytes!! of space. I couldn't believe it! what is it doing with that much space! I had a look at my hard drive space - and yes it was gone! I uninstalled the program and got my space back, and then reinstalled it!Now, its using 9GB of space! I can't understand. Whats causing it to take this much space, and why 18GB then 9GB. I have looked in the Spyware Terminator forums - no help there.Whats Happening?? -jimmy
  15. Brians idea is good! the less that he has plugged into the UPS means the less drain it has on the UPS - and as faulty.lee said - the battery will last longer with less items to run. This also means that you wont need as much watts, which means you dont need to by a UPS with heaps of watts. Most UPS's will come with software that will safely shutdown or hibernate (and save work) your computer when the power goes out. This means that If the monitor doesn't have power it wont matter - the computer will shutdown and you'll be safe! In my case, I would need to have the Computer as well as my External HD plugged into the UPS. Those together would be a bit of a drain on the battery!

    Hi

Welcome to Xisto. Hope you have a good experience! Are you intending to start hosting here? If so, I think it is a good choice. As long as you can keep up the posting, its good! I have been hosted here since I became a member! The servers are fast and there is great reliability. If you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to post a topic in the appropriate forum, or contact one of the members!Hope to see you around soon!-jimmy
  17. I agree with xbox, we dont need that speed yet! what we have now suits everyone fine! there is no amount of programs and OS's that you can run that would need that type of speed. Maybe in a few years, we may be wanting them for servers and such, but at the moment - they can stay in development!-jimmy
  18. from the sound of that, I thought of what WeaponX said, how much RAM does the computer have? A computer that is taking that long to get from the loading screen to the welcome screen must be running low on memory. Windows XP runs on a base memory of 256MB, but the minimum is 128 (from memory(no pun intended there )) I have used 256MB before (it loads ok to start with, but the more files and programs - it slows quickly). 512MB is a good amount - it loads very quickly at a fresh install and works well with a heap of programs. I have 1GB and load about 10 programs at startup and that takes a little while, which is fine with me! So I think your problem (or your friends problem ) is RAM, a 256 MB chip nowadays is very cheap and will speed up windows amazingly. No editing of startup items is going to make windows load faster then a new memory stick! -jimmy
  19. The main idea of changing the resolution and quality would be so that users aren't waiting for the movie to load, which would loose page hits. But also to lower bandwidth usage. Imagine downloading HD quality movies from youtube with the amount of hits they get at the moment, they would be going backrupt paying for internet fees. Thats if their servers could handle the load of so many videos at such a large file size.-jimmy
  20. I have a LaCie external (with Seagate hard drive) formatted at FAT32 for Windows, SUSE and OS X. It works well - and most of the files I have are under the 2GB limit, so I'm OK.The Seagate brand is a good one, and reliable - I havent had any problems with my drives (the external one, and my internal hard drive is a seagate too!) Never had any problems before!Good Luck-jimmy
  21. I have a SpeedTouch 530 and don't have these problems. When I enter the password (or username) incorrectly, it just pops back up the username/password box. As WeaponX said, try resetting the password! I'm not sure if there is a master password for the modem, but if there is - he may have used that!Good Luck-jimmy
  22. I cant seem to get the same error again! im not sure what it was. I havent restarted my computer since then, or cleared out the temp files. Strange! Just wanted to let you guys know just in case it was something with the site! Thanks anyway-jimmy
  23. Thanks. I am taking the laptop back to the people that repaired it the first time. Hopefully they can soalve the problem for me. If not, ill try the battery!Thanks,-jimmy
  24. Hi, I was surfing around the Xisto pages today when I came across a strange error. When i hit the back button in the browser (Firefox) i get a page full of random numbers, letters and symbols. I have attached a copy of it in a text document if anyone wants to try and make any sense of it (i couldn't). I was browsing around the programming forums if it is something specific there!I have never seen this before - but it doesn't look like a database error! could it be something with my computer/browser conflicting with the website?Thanks-jimmy
  25. I would suggest what saint-michael said! Open Office is a great free alternative to microsoft office! I use it all the time at home and have perfect compatability with others who use microsoft office!
