Another Good Thing Gone -- Microsoft Is Buying Skype
mahesh2k replied to imjjss's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I can see that they're making changes to their network and installations. Most of the time skype is broken and is not usable. their forum says it is problem in their network which appears regularly and with IPV6 this will be resolved soon. I have seen some members claiming brazil and uk not accessible at all. I'm sure it is not yet resolved for sure and they'll take more than 1 week or so to fix that. One more thing is that as i said earlier they're going to announce .NET integration or messenger integration of the skype services. they'll also flash ads of skype across their network. So i guess this is the way they're working hard on new company to sustain. I don't know why skype got sold and what was the reason to get sold to microsoft. Anyway, new blog of skype is updated and you can see most of the blog post are related to support. If you're having issues with skype then check. Heartbeat.skype.com for more information on network health of skype. -
Another Good Thing Gone -- Microsoft Is Buying Skype
mahesh2k replied to imjjss's topic in Websites and Web Designing
We need to know few things here about microsoft and skype. First of all there is no alternative for skype when it comes image and video processing. The software is simply superior and there is no open source alternative of this software. There is no paid alternative of this software as well. Though some commercial software do offer similar service but in short there is no alternative for it. Microsoft is taking advantage of this facility and wants to use this service for their messenger. You know windows live messenger ? that messenger is being used by users from around the world. It is still as easy to use like yahoo messenger. In case of skype and microsoft merger. I think skype will be integrated by their software and they will use it on more of their softwares. Besides that linux and mac versions are likely to be there. But i guess they will revise their charging plans to recover their cost of operation of skype. I don't know how cheap or expensive skype will be in future. But microsoft is responding to middle-class market which is actively buying services on internet. So you should think about that as well. -
There are few things you need to know about godaddy. Though they may appear cheap at first but they're not for long term. they only offer cheap registration for the first yaer and after that they charge you more than the amount to cover the earlier cost. Also many times they don't let you transfer the domain name to any other registrar. If you fail to pay for the cost of domain renewal then they take over your domain and charge heavily for whoever buys that domain. So overall that cost is going to be high for buyer. Many times godady staff purchases alternative domain of your earlier domain and threatens you with patent or some copyright stuff. They're quite popular for this type of deception. You can check nodaddy.com for such horror stories of godaddy. If you want to avoid all this then better to go with namecheap.com site. They dont track your site wide searching as well so they're quite safe for you to check your pending or untaken domain names. Other than namecheap, you can use gossimer which charges similar rate to that of xisto. they also accept alertpay, liberty reserve, webmoney for the transactions. I like gossimer because i can use alertpay on their site and that way i can take my money to domain registrar just like paypal. I do have some other names in my notepad. I can reply some other time if i get that names for cheap registration.

Almost every thing that you order online and offline has that tax. For example if you order any electronics from amazon.com (US) and get that in india or say sri lanka/pakistan. Then you'll pay more than 10% of the tax. Most of the electronics stuff also requires separate plugs to draw power from because plug standards are also different in asia. Take example of IPad which costs 599$ US and in india or pakistan that amount goes to - 27,000 Rupees(India) and 40,000(Rupees/pakista) after normal conversion. But they also add sales tax, foreign exchange tax and other import duty tax, gift tax, benefit tax and what not. So the amount adds to 20-30,000 more bucks to current amount after conversion. So if you check ebay shop in india or pakistan, sri lanka then cost of 599$ dollar IPAD is usually 50,000 or 60,000 local bucks. You can guess how expensive is that. In case of hosting, asian hosting is 5 times the cost of US based hosting. So most of the time asians prefer hosting from foreign countries. You can guess what is the reason behind that. Even though host like hostgator is in india, they'll charge huge fees for tax when they let users to buy local hosting. In case of xisto, you'll find that servers are shared with psychz or purchased from psychz (dedicated server) and the owner of xisto is using reseller panel to give us hosting. SO that way we're using US based servers but still owner can charge asians for his service in asian taxes. This is the current picture of the hosting and taxes. Hope this helps you get the picture.

I guess there is likely to be some hack out there. I searched the google and found atleast one tutorial on it. It basically deals with two things - installing it natively on PC or linux or installing it directly under VM. There is also one project that lets you run android on netbooks or other linux distros. You can check that here. There is also one site which has step by step instruction on how to access or install android on virtual machine. You can check that site here. I don't know if you're vmware user or virtualbox because that will change some steps in this tutorial. Check it anyway.

I don't think it applies to kiwis or australians because they're not exactly into asian continent and they're not under this taxable region. We know few folks from that region in another community where mycents are running by xisto and they never had that issue with extra tax. So i guess you're pretty much exempt from it. Take that 99.99% chance that this will not apply to you at all. You can continue to post and make calculated posts which brings you 12.95 or so dollars for the domain or hosting charges. Basic hosting charges goes to say 26-28 dollars. You can now calculate registrar fees total along with hosting for your posting and earning mycents. I hope that helps.
-
In asia, you're allowed to charge service tax for users of about 10.3% on all internet and off the internet services. I'm from asia and this service xisto or Xisto is also from asian owner. This is the reason my bill reflects extra fees for the service whereas non-asians get their price at about 12.95$. You'll see this change when you order and view your bill in xisto control panel. Its also available for you to view at later date. Basically fees are domain price which is 10.15$ per top level domain name. Top level domain name includes .com, .net and .org domain names. Extra fee from the certificate registrar is 1.25% and it is 1.99 dollar for almost every new domain registered via this system. So you get domain priced at roughly 12.95$. If you're asian or falls in taxable region for xisto services then extra dollar is also applied to you. So your fees go up high again you get about 14.28 or so fee per domain from xisto. In case of hosting these fees are likely to vary because it is dependent on which package is selected. I found 2$ or so charge which is non-existent if you're from US.

Really ? i have one support ticket pending on Xisto - Support. I asked them to update wordpress or in general fantastico scripts on gamma server. But there is no reply. I asked them that question because there are some wordpress security issues lately. None of the the sites that hosted on xisto had ability to autoupdate from the dashboard. SO I had to use the plugin to host my sites. But another issue with them was the files were not writable and made it dificult for me to make wordpress auto update. So i honestly asked them to update wordpress on this server till i get another host. But in return they didn't responded to my query. In fact they lowered the priority of my query and ignored it as well. I can even give you ticket name if you wish to inquire. Xisto is not what they used to be earlier. I can tell you that they might even lower mycent value for me in forums or don't update them for me at all for speaking the truth. I can see that they're not interested in providing good support for old members. I don't know when i'll be able to move to another host completely but when i do then i guess i may even move every domain and service to another site. Till then i have to tolerate this registrar and hosting. Hope they don't remove me from services till that point.

What Cms Are You Using And Why? Looking for the top CMS
mahesh2k replied to Xarex's topic in Websites and Web Designing
What PHP has to do with windows hosting ? PHP can be run on both windows, mac os and linux hosting. It has nothing to do with linux. All php apps that run on linux are likely to run on servers which allows php stack on their layer. So that means 99% of all operating system except some odd or which is ignored for php. Windows hosting and PHP apps are perfectly compatible and has nothing to do with windows vs linux debate. It's about server software that supports it. Almost every windows hosting supports PHP so i don't get your point. What doyou mean by what free cms ? all the free CMS that runs on linux are capable of running under windows. For example, we do run localhost wordpress installation on windows. In case of linux hosting there is cpanel which installs app via fantastico, softaculous for end users and in case of windows there is helm or similar control panel that uses quick app install for installation of wordpress and other softwares. If you mean by .NET which runs only on windows hosting with some exception of few linux based apps then i think there are plenty of cms out there for .NET. In fact large number of windows server users are using .NET apps over php apps because they prefer .NET based apps for obvious reasons. There are some free forums, blogs and some other softwares written in ironpython, asp.net and ruby. So at the end my point is you can run ruby on rails, php, asp.net, ironpython and some other languages without any issues on windows host. -
For slower connection i observed that when you go to login page from index.php page. It loads fine and then it also asks for credentials. But when you enter it then asta redirects to front page which is index.html. Then you can go to forums from that front page. So i guess that is really bad redirection from their side. I think this should be fixed. For me i tried to login three times with such redirection and found that it is not getting login properly. I don't know if it is low connection issue or happens with every one all the time. Right now using index.php then login.html from bookmark to login and then using the forum. Hope it gets fixed in future updates to asta.

Pay Per Impression Programs CPM (Cost per M, not million)
mahesh2k replied to OpaQue's topic in Online Advertising
LOL. Totally wrong assumption. But i don't blame you for that because you're still in CPC infancy. Most of the aff managers who ask for member sign up on one forum which i frequently post, will surely laugh on this assumption. Aff managers work on filtering out the publishers and managing rates, this type of work is not hard for them in fact is peace of cake. You're not aware of those software which filters publishers based on region, traffic and impression, website targeting. Really ? 68% CPC revenue is the lowest cpc in industry if you have any idea of publisher industry survey. Google pays lowest revenue for publishers 68% for the ads and 51 percent for the search. Not going to argue with you on that because your earning model is dependent on them so you can't see the other side of the wall. As for adsense competitors, how many have you seen online ? how many of you are aware of ? how many have you dealt with ? how many aff managers or account managers from such network know you before you say this ? So YOU don't think there are any means that there are no high paying CPM advertising networks ? Hmm, that's funny. You're making claims based on pure assumptions and think that there are no CPM sites that pay higher than 6$ ? I really can't decide whether to point you to correct you or live you with this type of thinking. I'll choose the former considering your approach to publishing and media networks. Underlined part was funny for me, thanks for that. From where you get these stats by the way. Ask this question to google. They booted demand media, about and many other good sites. All of them had adsense at one point and some still do but many are moving towards banner spaces because of this hammer from search team. Sure content farm claim against them is there but who doesn't maintain content farm on web to make money ? Every publisher does these days. Quality is subjective and anyone can find out thin-pub sites and claim it as low quality. As for your assumption of 60-40 share, google web spam and adwords team both are different and they surely disagree on decisions of google web spam. Do read SEO book blog for more information related to this. I prefer not to put more input on this considering your approach of pro-google. As for facebook, you got it wrong. It's not about busy site or anything. But facebook ads convert so merchants are there to display their products. If in doubt you can try facebook ads yourself and see it converts for you. It has better success rate than adwords. It's always about conversion when it comes to merchants or affiliates. If ads convert on even small search engine merchants move on that place even by ignoring giants. That's business. -

Quick approval based sites are good for signing up to publishers. But they collect a lot of data for merchants and that way merchants decide whether to select or reject. Those who do the analysis before signing up to their service lose the prospective merchants and publishers because of pre-screening. I don't know your demographics of advertisers but i found that if you work on it and promote enough then surely they'll come to you. As for adsesnse, they'll give you income only if you gather the traffic from search engines. If your traffic comes from facebook and twitter then i think they'll hardly convert on your pages. Besides that google adsense earning is affected by search position and other issues related to website, SEO etc. But in case of CPM ads most of the traffic is coming to your site because your name is gone viral. You don't have to worry about whether your traffic is from search or social media. This is the plus point of CPM ads or direct advertising. Both advertisers and publishers are into win-win zone. They get name for their product in short interval of visit from users and publishers get consistent earnings as well. Google adsense is not reliable earnings source and if you follow industry leaders in publishers world. You'll notice that hardly few top publishers bother about adsense, rest of the other rely on CPA and CPM based advertising. They care for the conversion from users instead of relying on SEO and google. You may not agree at this time because you're earning from google and happy with it. You're enjoying the early cocoon of the online earning, which is good experience in itself. But later when you get mature in publishing world you'll realize that this earning is nothing but cookies in broken jar. There is much more money out there, but it all depends on expectations and satisfactory zone of any person. But if google adsense is the only earning option you have then chances are there that you'll realize this when google slaps your site or you get less visitors. You'll learn these things, all in google time. Slowly but you'll learn it if you spend enough time on it. Most of the publishers which are known in media/publishing industry know this fact and rely less on google. Especially after panda most of the merchants are moving away from adwords and going for facebook advertising and other social media sites. -
Pay Per Impression Programs CPM (Cost per M, not million)
mahesh2k replied to OpaQue's topic in Online Advertising
Buysellads.com is space rental type of ad network. And yes you can call it CPM or such network because of their initial requirement of the traffic and reputation of the site. They take a look at many factors before placing your ad in their marketplace. I found that most of the sites in their marketplace for view are very highly targeted and they do other reputation analysis as well. Some of their account managers do lurk around forums and who knows they might see this thread and reply if they thing it's worth to reply here. But knowing that most of us here discussing about impression less than 1 mil per day i doubt if any account manager from top CPM company will hardly drop here. I found advertisespace.com working for one of my site because it was niche site and was getting some regional traffic. So in order to monetize that traffic i used their service. They share 80-20 space on any website and you can also get referrals to make more money. In case of referrals, ad money is generated from their 20% and not from your or previous referals earning. So i guess this is one good network worth to take account. Few issues with these networks is that they also work with local companies instead of offshore publishers. For example if you're offshore publisher and not-native then you may have issue with their paypal funding or bank wire funding, so you have only option of check. This could be an issue for some networks as they via wire trasnfer or paxum/paypal. So payment processing is one issue for the account manager. They'll rarely approve international publishers on their network because of this reason. I got this answer and history behind not accepting international publishers from one of the affiliate managers of such CPM site. I hope to find some payment processing alternative soon so that i can get such network. The reason is that they fill the pocket without variable amount of earning like adsense. I like that point about CPM advertising. -
Pay Per Impression Programs CPM (Cost per M, not million)
mahesh2k replied to OpaQue's topic in Online Advertising
Pay per impression programs are not available to any random website. These advertisers are also looking for some good conversion. In case of that they only get it from high traffic and quality website. So don't put your hopes on such ad networks if you're small publishers or if your site gets traffic any less than 1million per day. If you do get that such impression then i'm sure these ad networks will contact you instead of you contacting them. Some of the ad networks are known with title - pay per view. In this program they pay usually rate of about 5$ per 1000 visitors. This is the highest rate for 1 mil per day site. If you reach any more than these visitors then only premium ads are shown on your site. These ads convert like cake and that is why most of the merchants are looking for such site. Considering google's fall with panda algorithm there is no way they can find such high traffic site anymore. In order to find such site they either need to get some visitors from facebook which google can't read and hence cant't rate them high on their search engine. But it's all about quality visitors so you can expect PPV value high for facebook traffic. If you want to try PPV then closest you can get for your small publisher site is from tribal fusion media. They're leader in small publisher PPV ads. If you fail to get this advertsier then i doubt you'll be able to make any money from any other PPV advertisers. By the way beware of other scammers who start CPM based sites like adcpm etc. and use google adsense on your site. These sites are fraud and don't pay any cent to you at all. These type of sites are supposed to avoided at all costs. -
Google allows video chat via gmail. There is no update on gtalk with video feature as of yet. I mean video featuers like skype. They managed to get the video running on web app for the gmail. I mean the web app where you run gtalk inside gmail. In that you can have webcam based chat but i don't think they're ready for the skype based call service. So i think google lost that competition point to microsoft. I don't think they'll be gaining advantage on that anytime soon. In order to get that advantage they need to build software much better and cool than current skype features which is not possible in my opinion. That aside i think they'll add some excellent feature to the MSN explorer and increase the user base on that. They already have that browser based desktop with that software. Who knows what more they can do with skype enabled? i mean you can use the desktop based video communication with skype pre installed in future windows version.I think that will be really good way to expand more userbase as those who use skype daily for their usage and work.
-
I don't think any existing feature sets will affect anyone in any way. In fact i think it's good that microsoft bought it. If it were to be apple. They could have made weird interface in next few years. Something like simple blank window with one button to call and another to end the call. With only option of right click menu for more customization.lol. that was joke on apple design. That aside, i think microsoft will add the featuers of skype to their MSN explorer or msn messenger. This way they'll be able to integrate the live ID into skype. I know it is huge pain and is going to cause some security issue as well. But that's microsoft for you. They'll not abandon linux or apple version of skype. They'll continue to develop it for some time. I only worry about android version. I don't think they'll ever release the version now, because that is in direct competition with their phones and OS. Skype is here to stay it's just that it'll have some microsoft integration changes.

One more year with no final release of SMF2. I don't know when they plan to release the final version of SMF. I know there were some issues inside SMF forum with kathy and some other developers. So i guess this has something to do with that incident. Though they claimed to have one foundation for SMF where they're building updates to SMF consistently. But there is no concrete update from the SMF as of yet. Why? i have no idea about that. More than three years and no updates from SMF at all. SMF 1.11 and SMF 1.12 will be there for quite some time now. Maybe they should update SMF to version 3 directly just like winamp folks did with too many beta released for version 4 and they directly released the version 5. If that is done then i guess this much wait of the software is appreciated. I don't know if anyone is making fork from SMF, if not they should because slow development of SMF is really irritating to most of the forum owners and script plugin writers.
-
It is free and there are some nice themes there as well for this forum software. But it's not for professional sites and the customization is also not so easy. I like the way smileys and quick reply works on forum. But in comparison to SMF, i found that Mybb is much simple and easy to use. I don't know why few folks prefer to use phpbb and smf over mybb sometimes because if you want set and forget option then mybb is one good forum software. I know i advocate smf a lot but it's not getting updated on regular basis. Also the Version 2 is pending for it's version final release. I don't know when that will happen. Coming back to Mybb i think anyone with simple forum requirements should consider mybb and fluxbb for the forum usage. You'll also find some active users on their forums, which will help you for the plugins and other things related to the mybb.
-
Yes. You're correct and for this you can see the live example in another forum with mycents on - Xisto.com. Thought the script on Xisto is tweaked such that you earn even less because they're not moderating that forum anymore. That forum pays 13-20 mycents per 10-13 forum posts. Which is very low amount if you ask me in comparison to Xisto. But as Xisto is more geared toward technical discussion than casual discussions, their members avoid this forum because spam and casual discussions are not allowed on this forum, which is good thing. I'm going to change my opinion very soon about xisto hosting. Currently my two sites are hosted on gamma server. I opened one ticket on support to ask them for the wordpress version upgrade. They're still on 3.0 whereas current version is on 3.1.3. They have no plans of updating the script. I consider that as security breach and is not good for my wordpress sites. So i'm planning to move my sites elsewhere. Besides that mycents are also not updating quickly anymore. I had issue with update for about week and they updated only when yordan asked them to do. SO you can guess that they're not bothered to listen to folks like me as it proves from one of my pending support ticket. I'm planning to move to other hosts once i get my virtual credit card working, as paypal is closed here and i don't have credit card, i'm in process to purchase virtual card to buy hosting. Till then i have to tolerate this mycent system, so wish to get paid hosting elsewhere soon. Hostwinds and cirtexhosting are cheap, let's see.

I started with C programming first and then later moved to C++ as per college course. I found both these languages boring because i was tired of creating console programs. Then there was matlab and scilab in my course. Mathworks was there as well for one lab paper and later similar scientific languages were there for the semister. Personally i studied java from my own online tutorials and then learned python as well. Python was the easy language i learned so far. The syntax was very easy in comparison to other programs and you can also learn how to program effectively. Now that i learned these important languages my current focus is on Ruby and C#. Ruby on rails is the one that i'm thinking for my web development projects. It's not that easy when you're playing with too many languages. So from my experience i can tell you that you should consider learning python first then move on with C/C++ and then C#. I don't know what's the benefit of java in long run but i guess .NET framework is recognized by many software developers and it is preferred over many other run-time environment. So there isn't any favorite language of mine. I just try to learn the language as per my project requirement and move on. This way i don't become language biased or religious which is my goal in both on and off programming world. But still to answer OP's question, python and C# are the favorite.
-
Python Versus Java ? Which of this language is the best? Why?
mahesh2k replied to JMC1405241503's topic in Programming
Nothing wrong with bumping old topics if there are hardly any good topic poster left. I mean forum is basically less active in these section. What's wrong with the bumping if anyone wants to post reply. As long as they're not spamming there is nothing wrong with bumping old topics. That aside, i'm learning ironpython in order to make local apps for windows. With ironpython it is possible for me to create apps native to .NET framework. I know java has similar way of doing things. But i found .NET much better than java because of it's support on native machine. It is also possible to create native executable depending on which platform it is installed. Ironpython is available on linux, windows and mac. So if you're planning to learn python then you should consider downloading ironpython. Most of the python stuff is applicable to ironpython as well. Additionally you'll be able to use ironpython stuff which is native to .NET world. If you can manage to learn python using ironpython then moving to .net libraries is not so hard. So my vote goes to python as it is more beginner friendly and is perfect for many types of application. Syntax is also easy to remember and you don't have to work much with it. YOu just have to worry about indentation. -
What Cms Are You Using And Why? Looking for the top CMS
mahesh2k replied to Xarex's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I checked you site youtrippy. The issue with your site is that you added index.html page that makes it very odd and weird looking site. I mean it looks awaful with enter here type of site. I think these days it's better to jump directly to the content instead of intro thingy. So if i have to suggest you anything then it is get rid of that intro-click to enter page. Once that is gone we can easily see you site and the associated community. Design of the page is good. I'm not into dark backgrounds or designs because they hardly look any different. But anyway its your site and your decision on the looks of it. By the way thanks for mentioning the name of the CMS. I found it very good CMS and as alternative to buddypress which is kinda buggy these days with so many users around making broken plugins and fixes. So definitely going to try the CMS suggestion that you made in this thread. As for me, i use variety of CMS depending on my project needs. For blogs and niche site, i use wordpress. For media sites, i use movable type and similar site software. There are some other CMS which i use for commercial reasons and are paid because of the features they offer. It's all just about personal preference and ease of use makes choice for most of us. -
Unity 3D may look like free but it has some limitations and that means you can't sell the games. So games need to be in open source model. This way profit is likely to be stopped and you'll find rip off users making clones easily. So in order to avoid that you need to upgrade the license be it Unity 3D or UDK (unity development kit). Another issue is that there needs to be runtime development environment which also requires its presence on client machines. Be it browser game or desktop, without that runtime there is no way it will run the game. SO you should choose alternative game development IDE. IDE which is not dependent on any external or in house plugin for members to download. If that becomes possible with simple C++/Python then i guess there is no issue with the games. So instead of using closed source game development kit, make sure you're more open on customer front and dont stick them with options like runtime environment.

If anyone is from US/Canada and UK then signing up with amazon associates program is good way to monetize sales. As for international users it may not reap much benefit because of check payment and the payment made from the cut off their taxes. So ultimately you get paid low in comparison to the local publishers. Still the percentages are not that bad compared to your international other merchants program. There are plenty of good products sites to choose from and amazon lists almost every type of products and stores on their website. You can also list your own site with them if you have one as store. They also offer amazon a-store if you want to package some of your wishlist and selected products for offer. You get 4% commission from the start and as you go higher with selling these items. The price goes high and you make more money. You can sell educational toys, books, media, backpacks and almost everything that is in their catalog. So be sure to check their service and see if you can build a site and offer these products. I found that some featured items selling well on their site.

I don't think those errors are minor or unfortunate. SOme of the errors in their system are purposefully made to make money. MOst of the transactions carried out via their system if failed are charged with denial of service reason. SO it is not reasonable. First they make their own system with bugs and then they make money out of it. Just because they're big site does not mean they're into business for good reasons. Some of their rules are downright snooty and filled with loopholes. I consider those loopholes as against any users privacy and safe purchase rights. So if you're using paypal or ebay then be careful with every transaction you make. It's always better to move to alertpay or every other payment processor if you can for your needs. Though alertpay is costly, you can use Liberty reserve or similar services for the payment transfer. That way you'll be able to cut some reliance on paypal and it's bad service. This is just my opinion and if you are having good experience with paypal then you can carry on with it. For those who are affected should go with other alternatives.
