Google Reader Beta Googles RSS Reader
dontmaimyourself replied to FirefoxRocks's topic in Search Engines
Yeah I currently use the Google Reader (alot, probably too much), I must say for the most part it is good it has all the basic features I could need with an RSS reader as well as the really usefull keyboard shortcuts (hey what can I say if it was practical for me to bin my mouse and pnly use a keyboard I would). I like the ability to search for new content (which lets face it is a pretty basic function of all online RSS clients). However I have to say that the current best feature is the ability for it to package all of the feeds you have into a single feed which can be easily read using an external RSS reader.OK so it has some limitations, as already said you cannot remove feed items already downloaded (they can be hidden though), and the tagging feature could still use a lot of work but all in all I would say this is another good application from Google. -
Personally I don't really like Windows Live Mail, the main problem I have with it is that I cannot (or at least didn't find out how to) filter in coming mail, it all goes into the inbox, oh yeah that and the spam filter still doesn't work and theres the hugh banner ads blocking everything. Unless you can't tell I still prefer Gmail it's just more flexibal than this but it is a step in the right direction. Oh yeah I forgot another of my problems the pane layout (like Outlook) only displays in Internet Explorer, amd seeing as this is the only major change from Hotmail that just isn't enough, so I'm gonna stick to Gmail for now.

Until recently I was using Firefox, I liked the tabbed browsing and the increased speed, but hated the RAM usage (80MB for a browser with 3 open tabs? not today thanks). So off I went to a land of sweet, sweet tabby speed, that land my friends is Opera (sorry for the slightly odd narrative method and use of non-words)Why I like Opera: firstly (and most importantly) the speed, it is commonly believed (and backed up by many independent tests) that Opera is the fastest browser), the real download manager (that actually lets me resume downloads across sessions), its (relatively) light resource usage, intergrated mail,IRC,Bittorrent clients, close buttons on each tab the list does really go on, so to all of those using Firefox (or indeed anything that is not IE) I can only recommend that you at lest try Opera, you never know you might just learn to love it as I have.

well I got 27.7, so yeah I guess I'm fat (not that I needed a computer to tell me that) but any way I genuinely don't care (I know some will still think I do, but I don't really care about that either.by the way I like the category it gave me: at risk of becoming overwieght (what so whats that mean then I'm not fat but I could be) I wouldn't really say I was lazy with it though, hell I walk for at least 40 minutes 5 days a week.Anyway I'm happy with that I mean I could still do something about it (and all of my family, friends and now my friends mam says I'm losing weigh, which is you know good)

I Really Hate Runescape is there nothing else?
dontmaimyourself replied to jmb2006's topic in The Vent
Wow, there are actually still some normal people left out there, I thought we had lost to the legions of 12 year olds wasting thier time playing a game in which the main point is to apparently no absolutely nothing (ok so I admit it my Runescape Knowledge is not all that great; it's basically I was watching a friend play it, glad to say he's seen the error of his ways now). I don't know it may just be me but I like my games to have an actual objective, the most interesting thing I saw him do in about 2 and a half hours was farm and shop, you know that can get boring after a while (ok more like 2 minutes) anyway it's just too bad that people are allowed to decide what they play for themselves, but to be honest I don't really care if someone wants to waste a large portion of there time virtually farming in a world of blobs and textureless landscape while they wait for the next piece of non important nothing to not happen. -
One Red Paper Clip A paper clip traded for a pen traded for ...
dontmaimyourself replied to mik's topic in General Discussion
This is just another one of thoses things I need to add to my 'I wish I'd Thought of That' list. I've recently been hearing alot in the news about this too (ok he was on a breakfest tv show) explaining how this is basically a result of his not wanting to get a job, but hey if works you can't really fault him. -
Are Love Calculators Predictions True?
dontmaimyourself replied to delivi's topic in Dating And Relationships
No offence to anyone, but the fact that this question has even been asked is troublesome to me, I mean I find it very (and I mean VERY) difficult to believe that these can have any basis in truth, especially those ones that simply ask for your names (anyone who is unfortunatel ehough to have seen any music channels recently should know what I mean). On the other hand one that at least asks afew questions, and uses some level of facts (based on the two peoples personalitites can have some use in helping to determine compatibility. As yet the only way to tell if you are truly 'compatible' (a word I hate, when used in this context, by the way) is to do it the old fasioned way and actually spend some time (and make an effort) to get to know each other, then go will truly know if it is 'meant to be' (by the way I also have a hard time in seeing anything as meant to happen). -
Winamp Anyone use this compaired to WMP or Quicktime?
dontmaimyourself replied to rldowling03's topic in Software
I used to, but then Nullsoft went and sold it to AOL, and that was that. Its still a good player, I just now have great difficulty accepting the amount of junk that comes with it, the AOL stuff mainly, and the e-music link thing or whatever that is. I will still say that this is perhaps still in my top three, infact its still my second favourite player, after Quintessential Media Player. I will also agree with the resource issue, Winamp is very light on the computer, plus it still does a very good job on the old plugin front, so I would say while its not for me I can easily recommend this to others. -
To be honest with you I never use Ebay, so addmitedly this news if of little concern to me, I would like to say however that I doubt even Google could challenge Ebay, well lets be honest how meny people actually know about Google BAse (outside of the uber-Geeks, that we are). Plus Ebay has a long standing reputation, ok so pretty much everyone knows about Google (and most trust the brand). So this could work, but I see the job of Google being difficult, but you never know they could just manage it.

New Service By Google! Its called Google Calendar
dontmaimyourself replied to mayank's topic in Search Engines
Not that impressive eh.. well the next time you can write a web based calender and have it automatically recognise new events based on the text of emails then I may believe you on that one.Anyway I myself have only just began using this service, and I must admit I haven't used any other online calender services, but then again with this I don't need to, now if they can just make it send me an email as a reminder (unless I just didn't look hard enough) that would be great.anyway this appears to be another great service from Google, doing what they do best taking a tried and tested idea and adding that Google touch, I know if this turns out be even half as good as Gmail (and initial feelings suggest it is) then I will be happy.Update 1: Ok so I found how to get it to send emails as reminders.Update 2: It can send text messege reminders to your phone.Update 3: It can send you an email at 5am which contains all the events form that day. -
Ok so Iwas going to post about how I don't particularly like Runescape, but I really can't be bothered to get into a flame war with a load of 12 year olds who need to get out more. However you can't really ban a game because it's 'too addictive' its really the parents and the childs responsibility to know when to stop, now banning it becasue its a boring waste of time now thats a different matter.

I might have imaginded this but I am fairly sure Google already offer a mobile version of its search engine, habg on I'll just see if I can find it..... yeah here it is, https://www.google.com/mobile/ So yeah this could just be a new banner for its mobile content that it currently offers, or it could be for something altogether more exciting, for example a small application which will index your text messages and phone numbers so you can access them from anywhere (Google Phone probably). Or they could simply have registered this domain just so noone else can, whatever it is we'll just have to wait.

Best Console Vote for your best console
dontmaimyourself replied to John Foreman's topic in Computer Gaming
Well going on the amount of time I spend using it I have decided to go for the Sony PSP, It all but killed any use I have for my PS2, I will however say that as far as next gen consoles go I am firmly in favour of the PS3, although from what I have seen of the Nintendo Revolution I would also like to add that that could be the surprise hit. Now I know it will have major technical deficiencies whit the Sony and Microsoft offerings but you have to give tham credit for attempting a real innovation, I may even be tempted to buy one, and coming from a guy who has been firmly behind Sony for about 10 years now, thats got to mean something right? -
That is actually one of the more cool uses for the Google Index I have seen yet, and you know its actually usefull, unlike most of the Google Hacks out there, its just a shame I personally have no real use for it, but as you say there are plently of people who will have a use for this. This is a genuine innovation, I just hope Google don't mind to much about them using their services to make money, I also wonder how long it will take Goolge to bring out their own version of this.

Just so we're clear on this I knew it was an April Fools joke, come on seriously you didn't think I actually meant what I had written did you?, I'm not that desperate, it was a joke at the joke, kind of my way of having a swift jab at the whole online dating thing, kind of a comment on how you can never be sure what a person is like just becasue you read it on the internet, any way its not as Good as the MentalPlex joke.Seriously, how obvious do I have to make Sarcasm

7 Deadly Sins: Which One Are You?
dontmaimyourself replied to semeticsister's topic in General Discussion
Is it usual that all 7 of those describe the same person? No seriously though the more I look a that list the more all of them seem to be me, do you think I should get help for that. I would aslo like to know which of the sins are you favourites, becasue I would have to say that my personal favourites are Gluttony and Greed. -
No theres nothing wrong with being ambitious, also if I may congratulate you on your idea (which to be honest, is a very simple one I'm surprised no one else has thought of it before). I must also admit that I have a very limited knowledge of how LASER's, but I sincerly hope that you manage to perfect this technique and further refine it so that it can be used to provide a large protion of the power we need.

Ok so I have a few most come from songs I like.Dont Maim Yourself - when I signed up I thought my forum name had to be the same as my site name (I know I was a bit stupid there, and chnaged my site name so this is just kind of a left over name I can't be bothered to ask to be changed)Shadowcast - I borrowed this from a Dio album called Magica, it's a concept album with a story at the end, the villain is called Shadowcast I thought it sounded cool, so I 'borrowed' it.Antiphase - This is a boring physics thing, its to do with two waves being in completely opposit phase. I thought this sounded cool.Unchosen One - A Cornerstone song, I thought it sounded cool, again I 'borrowed' it .and finally....Lord Of The Last Day - A Dio song, again sounded cool, I 'borrowed' it.

Well I'm really not into spying (honest), So I really don't think this ones is form also at $138.95 I could get a excelent camera, which I wouldn't lose and would just as easily manage the spying job (youi just have to know where to hide it). But I suppose this is something which is designed more as a proof of concept than as something which is going to be used by a large number of people. It also has obvious uses in portable devices (due to its size, the price doesn't help). Well anyway while I don't perasonally see the need for making things smaller in general, (I tend to prefer big things) i'm sure there are a few people who could put this to (immoral) uses (hey I bet you thought it too)

wow this might be the most useful Google Service ever, I'm off to upload 17 different profiles, all of which are completely different and feature pictures of someone I found on Google Images, who is significantly more attractive than I am.

To be honest with you I don't really see a practical use for Virtual Reality, out side of gaming. It is my opinion that this 'technology' has no real use, sure you can use it for a more complete involvement in games, but I don't see a usefull application for it. Ok so I suppose it could be used for training purposes, especially within the military, and emergancy services. but a practical application, I don't realy see how it can be used, as it does not allow for any interaction with the real world, and is therefore of little practical use. What I think however could be of real value is something which is knowed as 'remote prescense', this is where a guy in a 'virtual reality' suite is linked up to an entity which is used to represent him, which he can control remotely, kind of like a remote control car, only bigger. Ok so this technology is currently available in a limited capacity, but I am talking about proper humanoid entities which can interact with the real world and maybe even allow the operator to 'feel'. This has obvious practical uses within the military and emergency services.VR is cool and all (and will no doubt be massive once it has developed fully), but I personally don't see a use for it outside of pleasure, and posssibly for training purposes (and even then surely a real experience is better) anyway these are just my current view, which will probably change as soon as I see a practical application of VR.

Should Private Become Public?
dontmaimyourself replied to CroSpartacus's topic in General Discussion
Rather obviously I am going to say a huge NO to that one, its quite simple really, private is (and should always be just that). It's one thing for governments and other such authorities to (at least try) to gain private information, for the purposes of 'order' and such like, but to simply you around randomly sharing private messages simply becuase you didn't particularly like what was said or in order to humiliate another person is just plain wrong. There should defianetly be a law against it (there may in fact be one I'm not sure) I know that here in the UK it is a criminal offence to open mail addressed to someone else unless you have been given express permision from the recipient, I defiantely think there should vbe a law governing all forms of private correspondence, no matter what form it is in E-Mail, PM, IM, Mail, hell even smoke siganls and pigeons if its private its private. -
Harddisk Space harddisk space
dontmaimyourself replied to urlsubmission123kid's topic in Hardware Workshop
Personally I would say that 80GB was fine, I only have an 80GB HDD my self, and I am way, way off of anything near full, but then again I'm not big on Gaming, so I don't have any installed, but even still most games won't make too much of a dent on their own. But as zbrigui said straight copies op dvds, will eat into that space massively (I have two currently an dthey take up about 14GB, however I do plan on converting them to mpegs, so there really only temporary). But as meny have said 80GB will do, but if you plan any 'extreme' use of your PC such as gaming or multimedia you should probably go for at least a 160GB, but hey if you need the extra space you can always buy an additional drive later. -
Speaking as a guy who knows very little about chip architecture, I can honestly say that I was both amazed by this news and at the same time I didn't really care, I mean I'm all for improvements in chip technology, but I find that for what I need to do my current 2GHz Celeron manages the job fine, but hey what do I know? anyway I suppose this is good, but I don't really see it changing the world just yet as most people are like me they don't really care, and with the current dual cored processors being massively priced I doubt most people would want to spend their money on a quad cored processor. Still it sounds inpressive, and I know if I did get a quad cored processor I would take ever possible opportunity tobring it upo in everyday conversation just for the initial wow factor, but to be honest I doubt anyone else would care. well anyway thanks for sharing this news (Sorry I'm not quite as amazed as you clearly are about it)
