  1. heh nice link TF, never seen that before! It cant be the timezone as the hours are perfect, it is to do with the minutes somehow. Which is really odd. Somehow the server must be getting confused with the time which is really weird. Especially as it is sporadic in nature and not consistent. and 4 minutes cant be explained by server lag either really!
  2. IMHO google chrome is the most stripped down browser of them all and because of that it is lighter and faster to open up. However it suffers from a huge lack of features. The problem you are having is most likely due to poor system specs. How much ram have you got in the machine and do you know its processor speed? My laptop dual boots with Ubuntu and winxp and i have never had an issue with firefox loading on ubuntu. It has 1gb RAM and something like 2.4ghz CPU, if that. It's not amazing by any standards but linux runs smooth as anything, except when im editing my large picture files which can really bog it down to the point of hanging GIMP and the default image viewer. It's really not cut out for multimedia but then the system is fairly low spec for image editing on that scale anyway.RAM is dirt cheap these days, even a 512mb card will give you a boost but get a single 1gb card and you will really notice the difference.
  3. The reason you have very few visitors is because there is no reason to visit your site. There is nothing there to see. Thats the problem with websites and traffic, you need a *reason* for people to visit and then another so they will return. It's not easy to do on a personal site but if you want visitors how about taking snippits of the day's news and talking about them. Or if you are into technology or something write blogs about technology news and give your opinions on the matter. People love to hear someone bashing a big company so whatever your hobby is perhaps write blogs about things you have used. For example if you like computers you could blog about bad experiences with windows as well as little tips you might have and the good stuff too. I also think you need to move the logo/banner right up to about 10-20px from the top of the browser. At the moment it just dominates the page and it shouldnt be that way. I should look at it once then read the content so i can eventually ignore the banner and simply read the content. It also looks very bare due to the colour scheme IMHO.
4. The latest version of Ubuntu is a breeze to share! just right click the folder, go into sharing options. tick the tickbox and then i also had to click the guest account option to be able to access it. If you are sharing the other way around then remember to disable, or correctly configure your firewall on the windows machine.
  5. Very clever stuff! I like it a lot, would make a great ornament to have in a house!
  6. Seems the server time may be out then? Interesting....Thanks for confirming the problem! Nothing worse than a problem that you cant replicate
  7. Evening all. This is aimed mainly at the admins, the shoutbox timestamp appears to be wildly inaccurate at times. I am wondering where the timestamp for the shoutbox comes from? Is it calculated based on the user's time, the server time or some other number?I ask because often my shouts appear below the person replying to me in an order such as:1 Them2 me3 Them5 Them (reply)4 Me (question)And just now i got the "shoutbox flooding enabled" message only it had a timer of 211 seconds.... Refreshing the page or the shoutbox didnt solve this and it is counting down in one second increments so the flooding protection isnt broken it seems that the shoutbox has given my last message a timestamp of several minutes in the future. Right now my clock says 1:11 PM my last shout in the shoutbox also has this timestamp only i shouted that about 5-10 minutes ago... Hence the confusion with the flood protection. In effect i got a 10 minute flood protection from the shoutbox because my shout was timed 10 minutes in the future. Only now have the two times matched up and my silence is at an end. What's the cause of that? Here at work we are synchronised with the microsoft internet time servers and google reports the time accurately for my area. So i know MY time is right, the question is, is T17s time right?
  8. Mhmm, id expect that would work.If you have problems reading the text everyhwere, from title bars, web pages, MS Word, the start menu etc... then change your desktop resolution down one step. Right click a free space on the desktop, then go settings and change the slider there to the left one step, click apply and see if it is better, if not click "no" on the popup box and try moving it another step to the left, keep going till it is just right
  9. Remember that formatting the hardrive deletes EVERYTHING so if you cant get windows to re-install you will need to buy another disc and key.
  10. Linux is no longer for experts, anyone capable of installing software and managing it on winxp can use linux, they will have difficulty but so did i when i switched. It is a much better OS than windows and i dual boot it on my laptop now.I dont have a firewall on my linux partition but i do have a virus scanner as i run WINE so it makes sense to have a scanner just in case.
  11. i agree with the blur statement, which was my original argument for it being fake, however it was a professional photographer with a pro camera so in theory with a high enough shutter speed and a slightly increased ISO rating he couldve got the shot.
  12. Too true, i have a little experience with soldering and before the iron is tinned it can take ages for the direct heat a soldering iron to flow the solder, let alone the air temperature within the console. Some people say that it heals tiny, tiny, tiny cracks in the solder which cause problem connections. Im not so sure.If it works then go for it. But microsoft extended the warranty to fix the RROD so phone them first!
  13. UK users can text "GIVE" to 70077 as per the instructions at: http://www.dec.org.uk/ This will donate Ł5 to the DEC. However the government will take Ł1.41 of that for themselves as "tax" which is shameful... To stop this happening you MUST go to: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ The first link also gives this information. It is called Gift Aid and means that the DEC can demand the Ł1.41 from the government. This is supposed to only apply if you have paid this amount of tax through earnings (eg work) but i dont suppose they check so i would urge everyone to "Gift Aid" their donation. It's nice to see some humanity in the world and well done to those who donated. I only just donated because i saw the text option. I thought they might have it after the 2005 tsunami and they do! No excuses now! Almost everyone can spare a fiver! International users can also use the online donation form provided via BT http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Bt is (or at least was) government owned and is the biggest telecoms provider in the UK. While their business model is suspect i can assure you that you are as safe as can be online using their form. I do not know if they have to pay BT or not so if you are in the UK i would suggest using the text method.
  14. I initially posted saying this is fake. However some research shows it is in fact real. However, the setup of the camera makes it look closer than it actually is. It looks like the guy on the balcony could just reach out and touch it but i suspect this isnt the case. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  15. I agree and disagree, personally i think i know where magick comes from, i think it is a purely natural thing in the universe. But at the same time i have no idea of exactly how it works, nor if it occupies the physical plane, that is to say i dont know if i were to get a spaceship and travel every inch of the universe if i would ever bump into magick and be able to use science to detect it. I dont know that, it may be in another plane of existence that as yet science cannot understand. The thing with the universe is that in a way it has no laws. The human brain is stupid. We cant understand infinity... Just imagine it now, infinity, there is just no way to comprehend that idea as a measurement of space. So when i say the universe is infinitely big it just passes straight over our heads and we cant possibly understand that. This is purely a limitation of the human brain. Just because we cant understand something doesnt make it unreal. Another example is ghosts, or spirits. Just because i cant understand what a ghost or spirit is made of, or where it "lives" does not mean it cannot exist. THe human brain is limited in what it can understand but the universe does not have this limit. The universe doesnt think "Oh, the humans cant understand how i can be infinitely big, perhaps i will shrink to a billion billion billion lightyears so they can put a number on it" The universe simply *is*, whether or not we understand it. I think i may need to drop my need to examine everything and find a reason. It is the fundamental flaw in human psychology, everything needs a beginning, and then an end. Everything needs a cause. The big example is of course god vs the big bang. Just because i cant think of something never beginning and never ending doesnt mean it cant happen. It just means im too dumb to imagine something without a start or end. Doesnt mean it cant happen though! Sometimes we just need to *accept* things, rather than try to understand them.
  16. The main theory is indeed that it reflows the solder. Making it flow ever so slightly and in theory, rejoining shoddy connections. I imagine that it could trigger the safety feature of resetting the chips inside and turning it all off to stop it catching fire (which actually im surprised doesnt happen by default, i mean its conceivable that a display xbox in a case could easily overheat and cause damage to the machine itself and the display around it....) Try phoning microsoft and see if they will collect it. They might do if you whine enough
  17. Actually not many people were burned at all, most were hung or even acquitted here in the UK because we didnt agree with the foolish Christian invaders and their cruelty.Heres a question, especially for those that believe and have already replied, Anwii's reply should be interesting i hope... where does Magick come from? For example if i were to cast a spell and include lets say, runes or other symbols as well as invocations of deities and the use of props like herbs etc.... does the magick come from these objects and deities or is it simply that it bolsters the casters strength through belief in the same way that if i take a painkiller and believe in its power to stop the pain then i will find the results are stronger?Personally i feel that such devices are mainly props, however i also think that certain things have a power of their own. Crystals and anything living, or obtained from something living, has its own energy. For example i would suggest certain herbs, woods and plants have a power of their own whereas other things like runes are mainly focussing devices. Despite that i do feel strongly drawn towards using runes in some way.... Which is contradictory to me. Being scientific i cant honestly tell myself that a symbol carved into a stone or other item has any more power than the stone itself. The act of inscribing should, in scientific theory, have no affect other than a psychology one which almost gives me faith in the rune. And yet my spiritual soul is telling me that runes could be of great power to me. This is the battle within me, which side do i believe?!Does anyone have input on that? It's something i ponder quite a lot. There is more to come, namely on the subject of healing...
  18. The password is the point., so you *dont* have access to the network due to the password permissions system. The college was infinitely stupid.Where i work we do have the internet, we have two proxies through which all traffic is routed via DMZ. Think red orange green. Red is the internet connection, green is our internal network and orange is our intranet. all internet traffic has to come through one of our two, internal, proxies, if it doesnt then there is simply no internet access at all. So replacing the browser's proxy IP has no effect other than to completely deny access, unless of course you put in our special, unfiltered IP which only us 3 techs know.
  19. *shrugs* still, i recommend Avast and Comodo
  20. Live CDS also give you access to the C drive on windows etc.. and ignore all local privileges and sometimes bypass server permissions too. We used this in college to see what would happen and we were given access to all shared folders including the home directories stored on the servers.Still, it wouldnt give you internet access where i work
  21. Firefox will often work on systems that dont whitelist programs. It would work on our system only they would need to know the proxy IPs to get any access to the internet. Any other IP from an anonymous server for example wont get any connection at all. We have the two proxies, one is unfiltered which we use and the other is filtered for the staff and kids, so a browser is useless without the IPs and our unfiltered IP is a guarded secret :)It does work on quite a few systems though, just beware that you could be accused of endangering the network by bringing in uncertified programs and most networks have strong rules against using or bringing in software that is not already on the systems.
  22. I look forward to it ash I can try them out on our system and then improve it so they dont work anymore, nothin like a challenge in the morning :)Bring it on!
  23. Mehm kapersky was rated below Comodo which is the one i use, plus you end up paying ?30 or more for kapersky, comodo is a free download and performs better in tests.I also expect this is simply a case of having weak passwords, in which case i have no sympathy.
  24. Personally im not too picky with routers. your internet connection is capped at something like 10-20mbits which translates to about 1-2 megabytes per second. your ISP uses megaBITS per second and 8mBITS = 1mBYTE so your true maximum speed is your ISP's offer divided by 8. with that in mind your Internet connection will always be much slower than the wireless speed, perhaps by a factor of 5 or more. My point is that the speed of the wireless connection is *too* important if you just wish to browse the net, however if you want to stream movies, music or share pics between your computers (eg shared folders) it does become an issue at which point you will want something that definitely has Wireless N but if you just want to use the net then wireless G will suffice for a few years. Personally id try to aim for N just to make sure i am future safe but its your choice. If you only have a moderate sized home (lets say 3-4 bedrooms) then most standard routers will cover your area easily. You could expect full signal when in the same room as the router and perhaps half strength upstairs etc... anything bigger than that and i would consider spending $20 extra just to be sure. Wireless is fairly good with range but it is of course limited.Out of the ones you mentioned i would go with the Belkin F5D8233. It looks good, has the antenna, wireless B/G/N and looks reasonably good :)D-Link are good people, and netgear are probably better. They are our choice at work for our wireless coverage and their range is good (though these are professional edition routers with dual antenna and specially designed for larger areas and multiple users) Hp are also good, i think they do some routers. I would stick to netgear though. You cant go wrong with them IMHO. Ive never heard of the USB port for shared storage but it sounds genius! you can do it yourself easily by sharing a folder on a pc and giving it a static address but of course you only get access when its turned on and logged on.
