  1. this is ridiculous! I was praising MS a little while ago for going open source and now look! A stab in the back! Fair enough if they cant keep up with it but they can! They're simply forcing the world to to pay more for their crappy little software. Even you brainwashed MS lovers have got to admit this is ridic.I dont mind them stopping support after a long time, thats fair enough, once a software becomes fairly unused theres no need spending time and money on it but CP isnt THAT old yet! And vista is a rip off. well done MS for ruining the world again. Why cant that archangel of death, destruction and obvious mental deficit, George W Bushy invade MS for destroying the world...
  2. Ah dear... Well next time you'll know what not to open! And what not to open is anything you didnt expect...Lecture over...As for deleting it have you tried safe mode?Generally hitting F8 or CTRL during startup lets you choose the mode to start up in, choose safe mode and try to delete it there. If that doesnt work then you may have a few issues....Try a standard virus scan using different software, and maybe a scan in safe mode.
  3. At first i thought: Hell yeh you can slide it out (you might need specialist tools etc..) and put in a new one, but its best to go to a propper dealer to do it for you. Then i read Sonesay and realized hes right, they are integrated methinks. My last laptop had something that slid along inside when you tilted it, slightly worrying lol Then it stopped working so i bought a new one and took the old one apart and spied a heat plate/sink sliding around the motherboard.. I laughed... The reason i tell you this is because the heat plate (the ceramic plate on top of a big chip) Was actually my graphics chip. So its a long way of saying my old laptop had an integrated graphics chip. However i think with some searching you will find a high spec (and high priced) machine with a separate GFX card. But i expect it will be a specialist thing for high end gaming etc (which not many laptops are built for) and high priced. Another option is perhaps a PCI graphics card.. You should find a laptop with a PCI slot, the thing is you wont fit the card inside so you would have to find some way of externally mounting the beast and then connecting the monitor to it.. It would be possible for a laptop builder of a high level but i doubt any old bob could do it, i just doubt its impossible.
  4. Sounds like a good idea, the only problem is if you sell the product then contact the supplier and they dont have it, either that or they fail to send it or send it wrongly etc... Either way your customer doesnt get what they wanted and can leave negative feedback etc when it isnt your fault. Of course they get a refund but its still a bit of a risk. I guess a good idea is to buy one or a few products from the wholesaler and test them yourself and evaluate their delivery times/service and quality of the product, then sell those few then start "Drop Shipping" as you know it should all be good stuff. Thanks for the info though, it does seem very interesting, if you dont mind me asking, what sort of profit do you make a week/month?
  5. Why do you need their IP address? I hope you arrent planning anything bad here....You could make a website to capture all IP's, give them a link at an exact time like 11:04 and check the logs for the one closest to that time. Then tell them you made a cool update and get them to go on it again and compare IP's to find the two that match the times you told them and that are identical. but of course IP's generally change everytime they connect to the net. If they have a semi-permanent connection to the net (like ADSL) It might stay the same for some time but in general it can still change any time.
  6. Even my teacher didnt like the techs, she was a good teacher too.. Shame she was stuck there lol The teacher that we got fired was trying to figure out why a computer was "broken" and couldnt connect, or log on to, the network.. I said "have you checked the network cable?" "What one's the network cable" Came a reply.. At which point i was silent in shock
  7. Do you mean you want a basic login where their username is their email address and then they enter a password too? Like this: Or that the email should be a password, (or you only need an email and no password) EG:
  8. As a long term, reluctant user, and enthusiastic hater of microsoft i am in fact pleased at this news....However, do we really trust MS? Who says this source code hasnt been edited to remove any parts they didnt want us to know about? MS remind me a lot of the UK and US Governments (also off topic.. the government expect us to trust them with our money after nationalizing the northern rock bank? Thats like MS setting up a bank...)However i guess the real test comes if someone were to compile the code into whatever it should be and check it out. I would be very pleased to see MS go open source, at least partly. I accept that a company has to make money, but i still feel MS charge way too much....Maybe some free software, even a free version of office with a few limitations (like taking off advanced settings so that students and basic home users can use it but requiring a licence for business use)Its a good move but i want to see how and where this goes before i give praise to MS. There is obviously a motive to this and it isnt morals. Perhaps they are trying to undermine the unix/linux and other open source companies like Mozilla to gain more market domination and then not release the source of later versions of software.......We will see.
  9. I agree that you havent done anything wrong, i understand why you feel guilty but you cant control these things so dont let it bother you. If however you let something happen between you then that would be a whole different story.
  10. heh, in one computer room we had computers that were local machines we used to practice stuff on etc.. We changed the windows 98 (yes they really were 98 machines in the year 2006) default boot up logo/screen to a linux one Rather amusing. Firefox and ghostzilla did their rounds, as did VPN software (which one guy had deleted, along with coursework by the admins who were then complained about by everyone, not to mention we got one of our teachers fired on the grounds she was mentally unfit to teach )What you wanna do is go to him and say he has two choices. Install PHP on a server because you need it for the coursework you're doing or to allow you to install XAMPP on a local machine. Store a copy of the PHP documentation on your flash drive along with all the install files and README's etc...The only thing he could be thinking about is the MYSQL side of things which of course does need a database. But he doesnt need to install that part, just the PHP parser stuff. You can tell him that too.I hate admins.... They just block everything. Paranoid little freaks.
  11. Well in the UK they have launched the Tuxedo card. Its a pre-pay credit card that you can use in shops or online but isnt linked to a bank account. You have to top it up by going to a shop and loading money on to it or doing it online. but i dont think you can use it in an ATM.The other option is to setup another bank account and transfer money to it when you want it to spend
  12. Agreed, thats what they did last time and it was the most annoying placement for ads, i think the top and bottom would be good, that way you see the ads when you come to T17 and AFTER you've read a topic but it doesn't interfere with the topic itself, so while you're reading the topics you wouldn't see the ads yet they are still there and easy to click etc... im not sure where this topic came from, are they planning on putting them back? I really hated the ads, and it seemed pointless that half the time the ads that were displayed were for T17 anyway... so T27 pays the add firm to put their ads in the cycle, and then gets them displayed on their own website? Its just loosing T17 and xisto money...
  13. Well i guess the basic stuff of prevention is to use reputable software (doesnt mean you have to pay for it but software that is rather well known) keep a secure system, with AV's and firewall. If it's an old pc dont overload it by trying to do too much, also i its fairly old run the disk keeping tools every now and then. And if you want to avoid the blue screen of death forever get rid of windows! On a related note i got a blue screen a little while ago on my nice new laptop. I was running google earth with one of their little addon map things and it just blue screened. Bad times. I shall be avoiding google earth untill i can be bothered to do a fresh install. I expect it was the extension file that caused the error. I dont know the exact cause of the blue screen, i dont think microsoft do either, but general computer maintenance will hopefully reduce the risk.
  14. There was a problem with the network as the recent announcement: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/55899-network-outage-distribution-switch-ddosed-lesson-learnt/ says. Apparently all systems are stable but it seems perhaps not. I would suggest to just wait a few hours and try again. If still no luck then i guess we will have to wait for an admin to shed more light, but it could be some left over hitches on the network maybe. As a side note my website, and some of the above websites seem to be alright and load within a reasonable time on my 8mb(ish) connection.
  15. It seems you could be right there. Best bet is as SM said, use your router or firewall to block sites manually, either that or block them using a piece of software like netnanny or another website monitoring/blocking program. I think it might be possible to block some sort of script or something that the email websites use because back at college it was possible to access hotmail.com and to login but when you clicked the login button the page just never loaded despite the fact the site was accessible and the net was fast.
  16. Well the bandwidth of a website includes anything that is downloaded by the user, so even by viewing a page a user is using your bandwidth. So as far as i know a user viewing a video does count towards your BW usage.Thats assuming i understood rightly.
  17. Have you tried changing $_REQUEST to $_POST as you are using post variables. It may or may not work but its worth a go i guess. Do you get any error messages? If so what are they?
  18. You want the network to get slower?Im confused, why would you want it to go slower? Just so certain pages dont load up?It doesnt make much sense to me
  19. I think you might be better to use a database instead of a file to store the data, there is a little more PHP to be learned (or used, depending on your level) but its well worth it. the difference in difficulty isnt really that much and the advantages are pretty big...As Jlhaslip said you might want to add a method for stopping a user voting more than once. an IP check is a good idea but an IP changes a lot so cookies might be an idea, or if the user has logged in then you can of course use their username, thats a reliable method. With a DB you could do several things much easier than a file methinks. You could add details to it easily like their IP/name then which option they voted for. Then use code to count how many votes were for each option, this is quite easy using something like: EDIT: I just realized that i completely missed anything about inserting values to a database but follow the instructions at the bottom about a tutorial site and it will show you how to input data into a DB. $result_option_1 = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM table WHERE option='1'", $link);$votes_1 = mysql_num_rows($result_option_1);echo "Total votes for option one is: $votes_1"; you would repeat code like this for each option. Its rather basic and the code above is messy and wouldnt work (its not complete with a connection to an actual database, this is just the query part of it, and i left out a few backslashes to make it look better 8-)) but the general idea is there, query the database to find all votes for option one, then count the number of rows (which is the number of votes for option one) and then tell the user that number. If you need help with the code search google for "php mysql tutorial tizag.com" and you should find a nice, easy to follow tutorial string about php and mysql and yo will learn what i just wrote above and how to fully complete such a code. I wrote this assuming it will help you, if you already know this then dont be offended, i just have no idea what sort of level you're at with PHP so im writing for a beginner.
  20. Well methinks you're doing most things right, like drinking plenty and trying to eat and rest. the most important thing is energy and water, because dehydration can be a big killer, and even mild dehydration can make you feel really bad and even a hospital visit. If you find it hard to drink a lot then you can get someone to get you re-hydration tables from the chemists. Just pop them in the water and drink it, it gives your body important salts that it needs to keep hydrated. Apart from that there isnt much you can do methinks. Maybe try some fruit and veg for their vitamins and some chocolate, has plenty of energy and makes you happy! It should go within a few days anyway methinks so sit tight and rest!
  21. Well the way i look at it is this. if eating food is gonna give me cancer or something (which is the usual thing they say) Then i would naturally try to void it. Yet there's a reasonable chance ill get some form of cancer anyway so im not going to waste my life eating wheat and drinking water and nothing else just on the chance i might not get cancer, which in likelihood wont kill me anyway. It's just a waste of a life.Sure im all for extending my life but not at the cost of the enjoyment, theres no point in a long boring life if i can have a reasonably long fun life, its only going to be a few years anyway! Not only that but it seems the media and the human race in general is more obsessed with negative consequences than positive ones.
  22. It would seem you are part of the myspace generation, eh?Schools may or may not check social networking sites. However, if they do check them they cant do anything against you if you use swearing or anything like that because their power is only INSIDE the school walls. Its quite interesting how once you leave school you realize what little power they have...As for employers looking at myspace... I highly doubt this. Myspace is for teenagers, and anyone over the age of 20 who has myspacve should be banned from the internet for eternity. Not only that but employers really couldn't care less about myspace or your personal life so long as you behave in the workplace!
  23. Hum, do you know how much work it would be to set up your own hosting service?you need more than just a few codes, you'll need experience in website administration and security (security is very important, you my well end up with contact and even payment details of customers) Network administration experience, computer, installation, updating, management and security experience. Knowledge of the internet, including how the internet works (eg routers, modems, different network media) how data transfer works and a hell of a lot of time.not saying you cant do all of this but im just saying that no-one can provide you with codes to set up a web host. Plus you will need to make backups constantly, ensure a solid connection to the internet with a high amount of BW, and upload speed, which is something you will never get from a standard ISP, and of course you would need to purchase and store the equipment, the server, backup media, connections, modems, routers etc.... It's a lot of work, and even if you do have the experience etc i would recommend asking a friend for some help and doing it together
  24. Damn im glad i live in the UK! Plenty of rain here, it rained most of the summer, brilliant for me, i hate hot weather! It does seem silly that they would use drinking water for cooling towers.... For a start there are better coolants out them im sure and as you say recycled water is just as good, it doesnt have to be clean, just free of debris etc... fools.im glad to hear its raining again! Lets hope all the dams get to a really good level!
  25. Well it all depends on the cause of the depression in the first place. Lets say you eat only junk food and no fresh veg, then yes vitamins will most likely help you to feel happier and more active. Maybe your favourite pet just died in which case you will need time to get over it. Maybe you have a chemical imbalance and so might need drugs to help, maybe you have a psychological problem and need counselling. Because there are so many causes there are also lots of solutions. Thing is with taking drugs, and i would imagine vitamins to some extent, is that unless its a vitamin deficiency or a chemical imbalance all the drugs/vits do is make you happy for a little while, they wont solve the root cause of anything. Its like putting a plaster over a bullet wound. It stops bleeding the damage is still there and eventually it will get you. The only thing you can do is treat he root cause and let the wound heal itself. Best thing to do with depression is find out the cause, if you cant find a cause, EG nothing bad has happened and your life is pretty good even though you might not think so, then you should see a doctor because in these cases its more likely to be a chemical problem and so easily treated. Of course if something bad has happened, or you had a really bad childhood still see your doctor and ask if he can refer you to a psychiatrist or therapist as he most likely wont be able to do much. Of course im not a Dr nor medically qualified, this is just based on what i think is right and the psychology i did at college (which wasnt much) so best advice, if you're looking for advice, is to see someone qualified.
