Using Joomla or similar CMS is a good idea but it offers less customization over the backend of things. Its a brilliant idea for non PHP/ASP'ers but as i think sinisteredd knows PHP i would say its better to write from scratch, it isnt too much work to do and it will offer better control over the backend framework and he will know the system inside-out making troublshooting and improvements easier

Ive been interested in the police force for a while and i also have an interest in animals... The logical step here is to become a police dog handler, to do that i need to have been a police officer for 2 years so im looking at the possibility of joining the force (not THE force as in Luke Skywalker but a force none the less!). I know i need to be fairly fit, which at the moment im not but i want to get fit anyway so its a good incentive, is there anything else that id need?Im 18, about 6ft4 (i know back in the day a tall bloke was a good candidate!) no real other physical training, passed a college psychology course (i could user this to say i have an open mind, able to analyse behaviour, and if i go for a dog handler i can say i know the basics of conditioning and controlling behaviour) I can also say i have experienced a multi-cultural community etc... At the moment this is only an idea im thinking of but it does sound like a fun and open ended career. Really I'd like to be a response style officer but im sure you have a beat to patrol too, I'd also be interested in being a passenger in a car, not necessarily a pursuit car tho, but not really the driver. It'd be good to hear from any UK police officers, hear about the pay and the job in general

Well making the basic framework for the Profile section is easy enough, give each user a row in a table with fields like Nickname, Headline, Basic info (contains ag2, sex, location) Interests, Fav Anime etc....... That will then give you the data to load into their profile. As for customizing it with HTML be very careful here, along with HTML they could use JS, AJAX, maybe even PHP and CSS to hack the site. My suggestion would be instead of using HTML make your own markup language like BBCODE eg <p> becomes [p] and only do this for certain tags in HTML like colour, size, and style tags. Filter their input with strip_tags() and enter the allowed tags, then have another line with a str_replace to re-write all tags. Or an easier way is simply to use strip_tags to remove anything that isnt a colour, paragraph, U, I, B, H1...etc..... so you would remove any JS, AJAX, PHP or links (as many spam bots love to post links) If you were thinking instead of having like a WYSIWYG editor it would be more complicated but still possible. The problems are going to be with security though, anything that allows users to input data is dodgy but anything that allows users to enter any amount of HTML or other code is like suicide unless you're really careful. As always be sure to strip out all quotes, slashes, and semi-colons to prevent the PHP from bugging and exposing code to the user.

Thanks for all that!I bought her a harness and at first she seemed more comfortable in it but reverted to her old ways when my mum took her out with it, in the end my mum took the harness and lead off her and she loved it, she didnt come back as promptly as we would have liked but she did come back when called eventually. The micro chipping is a good idea, ill look into that for sure. My mum put the collar on her this morning and shes had it on for 3 hours or so now and isnt complaining so maybe it will work!

Getting Started With Mysql creating tables and insert data into them.
shadowx replied to flashy's topic in General Discussion
Nice little tutorial It would be good if you continued the series to modify table contents and structure with DELETE, UPDATE, SORT etc... I always found creating tables using PHP versus PMA really difficult to remember the syntax but in truth there isnt much to it! -
Hehe there was also a brilliant hoax by the BBC and David Attenborough (in the uk this guy is like as famous as Steve Irwin was/is, he does many nature documentaries and he is absolutely brilliant) They "filmed" penguins flying and said it was a type of flying penguin hehe. The video should be on the internet, i still need to watch it, I've seen stills and it looks very realistic! Another one was done by Blizzard who make the World of Warcraft game, check this link out: http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/new-site Genius!

one problem could be that the arm that reads the disk was shocked by the fall and scratched the disk or some other way damaged it, in which case it would probably only be possible for an expert to recover it with a hive of machines and devices, if that's the case try your local PC repair service. The other thing is just the shock of the dropping while spinning has warped the disk or something, i remember knocking my XBOX over with a disk running it made a horrible whirring scratching grinding noise and the disk was engraved with a perfect ring where it had flexed while spinning due to the centrifugal force (like trying to flip a gyroscope) and got scratched bad. I also dont know what the effects of dropping a magnetic device are, i know hitting magnets reduces their power so perhaps the shock has somehow taken some of the magnetism away and ruined the data. If you didnt want the data i would suggest trying to format or otherwise erase the disk and seeing if it's some sort of problem with the drive's "identity" rather than a hardware failure. Try it on your working motherboard and see if you can feel it/hear it spinning or anything, 2.5s are quiet (ive taken one out my old laptop and i know how hard it is to tell its working) but you should be able to feel something and if you feel nothing at all it could be a circuit board failure like Buffalo said, in which case have fun with your little mechano puzzle!Let us know what works if anything for future reference!

Hosting Credits Getting Like -3.43 [resolved]
shadowx replied to lailai's topic in Web Hosting Support
The reason is probably as the others have said, but if you dont want web hosting here then dont worry too much about the credits, they dont mean anything unless you want to get free web hosting here. You should still read the README file that Sonesay said.If you want to try for web hosting just remember to put ANYTHING you copy from any source (books, websites, other forums) into the QUOTE tags and if you write any sort of code use the CODE or QUOTE tags. Untill/unless you get hosted your credits dont go down on their own so it has to be as the others have said. -
Thanks for the link Mich, ill bookmark that as ive never trained a pup before so im sure it will come in handy, ive had a few dogs but all have been adults so a pup is a new thing to me :lol:As for dragging the lead around i would always be watching her, she rarely leaves the room anyway, only to use her puppy pads (thankfully she is potty trained so far) but you're probably right, just experiencing the lead isnt going to be the fastest or best way, but getting her to like the lead will definitely help! We dont plan to keep her in her collar while indoors, partly because she doesnt like it and partly because theres no need so getting her excited when she sees it will be sort of like the "walkies" word (at the moment we're experiencing the joy of being able to get our coats on without having her go mental ) I'll give her collar a go a bit later and see how it goes. Generally shes ok with it, she lays down and tries to get away when we put it on but once its on she largely ignores it with only a little scratching. I think part of the problem is the only time we really collar her is to take her to the vets for her jabs so she links it with bad things, the treats will help that! While im here, whats the best way to "punish" bad behaviour? I would never hit her unless she was about to hurt herself or someone else and needed extreme stopping. I've heard and seen the use of a shaker bottle full of stones that surprises or scares them if they do something wrong, but all the TV programs say not to do it unless told to by an expert so any advice with that? She does know the word "no" but she has a habit of playful/teething biting which doesnt hurt but i dont want her to think biting is ok to do so i need a word or a sound or action that i can use/say to her at any time to get her attention and let her know she cant do that, if she bits me a lot i will hold her mouth shut and look her in the eye and tell her No but otherwise i just tell her no and stop petting/stroking her for a little while.

Hey everyone, got a 5 month old puppy Staffordshire Bull terrier (In the UK we call them Staffs, i dont know about America) *BLEEP*, shes called Ruby, it was going to be diamond but we chose ruby (we're not some posh, poncy, tarty, fancy familly, it just seems a good name). Shes black in colour with some brown creeping up her legs and a white belly , back paws and the middle of her face. Shes a great dog but there are a couple problems. Aparently she was the runt of the litter and had to be hand fed at the start but a week or so after we got her we had her eating her dry food with a little canned food and now shes eating and drinking fine, shes a bit stubborn but we will get over that, her breed can be that way i hear but they are pretty clever too. The thing is she is petrified of her collar and lead (leash) and as a result petrified of going for walks. We only just got her vaccinated so these last couple days have been the first time shes ever been out, we live in a 1st floor maisonette (dont worry we walk her regularly, every day when she gets over this!) and we took her round my nans today and she loves the garden there without her collar but as soon as we put the collar and lead on her she went very submissive and laid down and wouldnt move, we picked her up and put her in the garden and she just hid in a bush. At the moment she has a standard neck collar but tomorrow im going to but her a harness and use that hoping that she will like that better. I've read a lot of articles on the net about this problem and ive read that its good to have her on the lead while in the house but dragging it around with her and then move to holding the other end and eventually walking her around the house then outside. This sounds sensible and i will start that tomorrow with her new harness. We have lots of treats and dont hit her or abuse her so i know we havent caused any confidence issues, i know her previous owners who bred their two dogs to produce her litter lived in a run down house but my brothers GF knows them and i dont think they are abusive. She's fairly submissive, she met another dog of the same breed yesterday, the other dog was off the lead so i picked her up just to be sure and we spoke to the owner and found out this dog was fine and indeed she was, very well behaved and the two dogs played a little but Ruby was a bit nervous (the other dog was twice her size ) As always the two dogs sniffed and when the other dog sniffed Ruby, ruby rolled over in a submissive way so im thinking she might be TOO submissive. Anyway, the lead we have for her is one of those retractable types and ive heard that a slack lead is the way to go so i dont know if, while training her, i should take the lead fully out and lock it fully out to make it slack or use her other, short lead, any advice there? The rest of her training is going well, she has Sit now and is starting to get Lay, she responds about 60% of the time to her name being called but if shes having a mental moment she just ignores us, but were working on that! Overall shes a great little dog, i just dont want her to be scared of going out on the lead, i would like to be able to trust her off the lead, in an open field away from traffic and children and other dogs of course, but it is still essential to train her to walk well on the lead and not be scared. Any advice? (I know the basics of conditioning behaviour from psychology at college so i know how to reinforce behaviour but not where to start with this other than gradually introduce her to the lead)

Ah one of the many joys of this very day is the google sense of humor. I remember the old Pigeon Page Rank system where they disclosed their elusive page rank secrets as being down to many pigeons pecking to indicate key words. It was described in great detail too..I like the youtube one, haha genius. And i also like the Virgle one, especially with the posting videos to youtube and the questionnaire, Google gets Kudos from me. I did send them an email and i sent it to arrive yesterday to congratulate their April 1st jokes. They replied reminding me it was still March 31st and how foolish i am to think it was April 1st. But my friends the joke is on them, for i sent that email this very morn using their Google Custom Time gadget so HA google! Ha!

If you havent already then you should also read the readme file: http://forums.xisto.com/index.php?actE=01&HID=18 It will explain all about credits and how they get you hosting.Given the fact you only have made 4 posts i suspect you also lack enough credits for hosting. The readme will explain how to get credits and explain the general forum rules so you can get rid of your warn and get hosted. I know the rules might seem strict but trust me, they work and they are well worth it!

Aw that's sad but i understand how you feel about it being over now. As the others have said the important thing is to keep looking forward and remember all the good times. It's always sad when someone goes but whereever she is now she cant be hurt anymore :lol:I speak for everyone when i say that the people at T17 are here should you need a chat Best of luck with the future

Welcome to Xisto! If you plan to stay around a while check out the readme file: http://forums.xisto.com/index.php?actE=01&HID=18 firstly i want to say that i found PHP fairly easy to learn, out of all the programming languages ive tried to learn (ive tried a lot but succeeded only in websites really) only HTML has been easier. IMHO PHP is much easier than any C based language, or javascript or Vbasic. I have written a few tutorials on this site that can be found in the tutorials section of the forums but for my begginner tutorial i saved it to my website: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It will tell you exactly what you need to have installed and where to find it and it will take you from knowing nothing and introduce you to variables and how to use them and display things to the user and show you how to build a dynamic website (EG like: yoursite.com/modules.php?mod=page1 style). That will teach you the basics. After that experiment with stuff and check out Tizag.com: http://www.tizag.com/phpT/syntax.php (to go to the absolute begginer part take off "syntax.php" and it will start from the basics.) There are so many tuts at Tizag if you follow them all you will be able to use databases and read/write files, variables manipulation, arrays, loops, IF statements etc.... It really is a good site. And thats that! A few tips: Download the XAMPP server package. As both links above say you need to have a server installed on your computer (it couldnt be easier i tell you!) Basically google "XAMPP" and download the installer for your operating system from the apachefriends website. That includes the Apache (web) server used to run PHP, the mysql server used for databases (you cant really use MS Access or anything like that for PHP, needs to be a server) an FTP server and a mail server. It's like a one click installer and you cant go wrong. I also suggest a syntax highlighted editor. My personal choice is PHPdesigner: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ totally free for non comercial works and its brilliant. Those are the two programs i use and ive never had a problem so far. Good luck with PHP and if you have any problems just ask on the forums, there are a few of us PHPers around and always willing to help, and welcome to T17 Remember to read the readme!

Hum im confused still...Do you mean you want to run PHP using Visual studio on your local machine? If you want to run PHP locally then you do need a server installation. Im not sure what the visual studio PHP "server" is like but if you do want to run PHP lcoally i would strongly suggest XAMPP.Sorry if im still totally wrong but im confused about what exactly you want to do.
-
Slightly confused but my advice is so use XAMPP (google it, comes from apachefriends.com) An all in one PHP, MYSQL, Mail and FTP server for windows, highly configurable, fairly light and very easy to use. I would guess that 90% of the folk who run PHP on windows on this board use XAMPP. And for moving around computers you can get XAMPP lite, specially made for portability. I may have misunderstood though, what do you mean by ?

Howdy, almost in response to my post about IMAP and PHP: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/56913-php-and-imap-to-read-emails-need-help/ (i still need help with this so please if you have experience in PHP and accessing emails using PHP help!) Im thinking i need a new mail server to rule out the possibility it could be my current mail server. Now currently im using the mail server that comes with the XAMPP package, the mail server is mercury32 version 4.something i know it supports the IMAP protocol because the docs say so and it has configs for IMAP. Ive messed around with it and no luck with my code (see other post i linked) so if you have any suggestions for IMAP settings to use the server locally let me know. Now im looking for another free, standalone, highly config-able, reasonably light (though my machine is fairly new so RAM usage isnt too much of an issue). It needs to have IMAP support included. Im looking at Courier: http://www.courier-mta.org/imap/download.html but would like to know if anyone else has any suggestions. I really need some advice either in this post or my linked one!

The first thing i notice is this line: Is this how it is in the code or have you changed the DB name to hide it? The reason i ask is that with T17 you need to prefix the DB name with your hosting username EG: If my cpanel login name was "shadowx" (which it isnt by the way...) My DB name would be "shadowx_shoutboxdatabase" I dont have time to look through the code so if this isnt the problem someone else will have to help!
-
Well this is possible but i would suggest using AJAX, the interaction between javascript and PHP (google the term AJAX) As this would make the system run smoother. With AJAX it would work as you said, the user clicks a position and something moves there or it is reported to the DB, without AJAX the user would click, then the page would have to reload or go to another page to display the movement or save it to the DB.The second problem you will have is detecting the co-ords (now referred to as CDs) one solution would be to use HTML image maps. Basically use an image as the background or clickable area then define regions within it using HTML. The downside is these regions would essentially make the clickable area into a grid so the user would be able to click on these little squares but it would be crude and would not use CDs but it could be used to move a player one or more squares in any direction. The other option if you need to use CDs is to use Java as i dont think javascript has the capability to track the mouse or mouse clicks. but i kno nothing of Java so i'll let someone else help there.

@williamstukeley:I've tried a few hosting sites now, all free of course, namely the terrible geocities and freewebs *sigh* but i can tell you this one is the best hands down. I wont lie there is very occasional down time but more often than not it lasts less than an hour and ive never noticed it. The rules are fairly calm but enforced well which means everyone gets a fair host and the forum support is excellent and its a great place to spend time. If you read the readme it will explain the credits, for the first package its 10 credits and for the second its 30 (the readme explains how to get credits and what they are, it is free, you dont buy them so dont worry about paying anything!) 10 credits is a breeze, you can easily get that in a day providing you follow the rules. 30 credits is a breeze to get in a week spending just a couple hours online a day. The advantage to this method is you get better stuff for the 30 credits and no ads ( i really hate internet ads) It is suggested you have an advert but i dont think its necessary, i have a little text link out of gratitude :lol:As said Qupis is also very good (i hear, i am hosted with Xisto) but you do get one advert, though it is small and customizable. If you choose to go with the credits option please read the readme as the rules on these forums are fairly strict, which is a good thing, and you might not get awarded the credits if its copied or considered spam-ish.

Seems right to me, i cant be bothered to test it but it looks right! The reason why we have to use single or no quotes within double quotes is this. In the echo command we are telling PHP this: So if i were to add some more quotes into the equation: What PHP understands is that it has to say what is in between the following quotes, and that is "Hello this " then it expects the ; as the end command but it doesnt get it, it gets some more random stuff that it doesnt understand and so it gives you an error. I dont know if that makes sense but it does to me! It is the same with any PHP command that involves quotes, you cant use quotes inside them, because PHP basically reads from the first " to the second " and then stops, anything that comes after that last " that isnt a ; (end command) makes it confused. One way of getting around it is to add a backslash (\) this is known as the escape character and essentially it tells PHP to just ignore whatever comes after it. For example: echo "<a href=\"index.htm\">Home page</a>"; PHP will simply ignore the middle two " because they are escaped by \ Just remember it only works for one character, so if i had this (although theres no reason to have two double quotes like this): echo "<a href=""index.htm""> Home page </a>"; I would need to add TWO slashes: \"\" I think that's all except one thing, this error: Whenever you get this error (i get it a lot because i dont realize i accidentally deleted a quote or something) always check for double quotes and more importantly take a look at the part in bold. That illustrates what i mean about PHP expecting to hear the END command ; Im always leaving that out too! If you need some tutorials check out Tizag.com brilliant tutorials there from beginner to mid level. Sorry this post is so long!

Hi everyone, im experimenting with php and IMAP to read emails on my local email server. My local email server is Mercury V4 which aparently does support POP and IMAP, i have confirmed the server is working by sending an email from the server using its internal send mail system and then checking that email using the Thunderbird client. the email was sent and received properly. So i moved into the PHP area and done the basic connect code (the full code i used is below so check that, im sure its right, i basically copied it) which seemed to work, i got the result: "Resource Id #2" Should that be "#4" instead? One tut said i would get #4 so maybe the error lies here... Anyway it connected and disconnected with no errors so i procceeded to use Imap_headers($connect); to get the headers of the emails.. Oh no.. It didnt work...The error detection code just told me it had failed with the variable i used to contain the header info returning a FALSE result and as such it just didnt work.... Any ideas? I really cant think of it. My PHPINFO tells me i have IMAP libs installed with the readout being: And as i said the mercury mail server seems to support IMAP and POP so what else can it be? I have just updated to the latest version of PHP and checked that the PHP.INI file contains the right filepath for the IMAP DLL. Im all out of ideas! The code ive used is below and is virtually copied with the changing of a few variable names: <?$user = "phptest";$pass = "test";$connect = @imap_open("{localhost}INBOX", $user, $pass)or die("Connection to server failed");echo $connect;$headers = @imap_headers($connect)or die("Couldn't get emails");$numEmails = sizeof($headers);echo "You have $numEmails in your mailbox";imap_close($connect);

Well there was talk of ISP's spying on us for legal reasons like to "stop child porn" yeh...because they wont find ways around it... Like passworded encryption maybe? At the end of the day its all word games for what is essentially spying and making money from spying. I wouldn't mind if it was an Opt-in thing (Eg i have to say yes before they can do it, rather than opt out where they automatically enter me for it and i have to say no in a most likely long winded write to us, email us, phone us and send us 3 horse drawn carts proclaiming you dont want to partake Sorta thing.)

Hello everyone, this applies mainly to UK users but overseas users might be interested too. I have an RSS feed to the BBC website in firefox and i spied an article about a company named Phorm. You may know Phorm by another name...121Media. The company that bought us spyware and adware that we never wanted in the first place. Phorm is the next generation in remote spy/adware hosted at your ISP. Let me explain. 3 ISPs in the UK are in talks with Phorm about introducing this system: Phorm will intercept every web request made using your ISP (so that includes every webpage you visit) by scanning port 80 at your ISP. It will take the URL and some header information then scan the website for keywords and content. Using these results it will then target adverts at you. It may not sound bad, you get adverts youre interested in. but look at it another way....The post office opening every letter you ever receive, reading it, saving some details in a file and then sending you "targettted" Junk mail to your doorstep. A clear Invasion of Privacy and in direct conflict with the data protection act. The reason this is so freaking annoying is because BT made trials of it on thousands of household without telling ANYONE. The scandal was only noticed by one BT user who thought he had been infected by ad/spyware when his browser kept loading a specific URL before loading pages (In FF it made a connection that he noticed in the status bar while loading his page) BT denied the scandal and only recently admitted it. Another reason why BT are one of the WORST ISP's anyone could ever choose. This "company" who previously created spyware and adware and infected millions of computers with it are now going to "infect" your ISP and remotely spy on you with what is effectively spyware and then use adware against you, yet you have no control over this, you cant scan for it or remove it. But you can make it harder and possibly stop it. As of yet no ISP has officially made a deal however given BT's scandal i expect many of us are being spied on already so its time to take action. If you use firefox there is a nice addon called dephormation: https://www.dephormation.org.uk/index.php Because Phorm works by using a cookie and is an "opt-out" System you can automatically, and permanently opt out of Phorm with this addon. It creates the opt-out cookie so you wont be harvested, it also alerts you of any Phorm related ads (EG the ads that Phorm has "targeted" to you) and i think it also alerts you of any re-direction to Phorm related sites. I did find a list of Phorm related URLS from which to block cookies but i cant find that site anymore. You can also modify your HOSTS file to redirect all phorm related websites to your localhost loopback address. So far BT, talktalk and Virgin (all terrible ISP's and companies anyway, they didnt need to prove it by doing this) are "in talks" with Phorm and BT are set to retail test it with thousands of users. If you are a customer of any of these ISP's i suggest you go on their forums or call them and DEMAND to talk to someone in charge. If you phone them dont talk to the person that answers the phone, DEMAND to talk to a manager and then ask to go higher until you are talking to someone you can really get answers to. If you contact them state that Phorm violates the data protection act and the law: And state that you wish to not be opted in and if you are opted in it will be a violation of your human rights and of the data protection act and that will terminate your service and any related services (state a competitor that doesnt yet have Phorm and say they offered you a much better deal and you are telling everyone you know to switch and starting a petition/website/awareness group to raise the issue) If you are with an ISP that doesnt yet have plans (or we dont yet know of them) to implement Phorm write to them too and state your objections, visit their forums and join in with the numerous discussions on the subject and let the ISP know that its customers do not wish to be spied on. There is an E-petition to the prime minister (not that he cares, he just wants power the ******* If you have a high powered rifle and sniper scope....) at: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (yes i have signed it) Bt have called the "service" WebWise so if BT contact you regarding webwise firmly tell them know and speak to a manager higher up in the chain of command. Show your support for the Anti-Phormers and destroy all Phorm supporters in anyway possible. As noted on many websites the only chance we have of stopping phorm is to make it loose money, and the only way of doing that is stopping ISP's adopting it and not clicking any Phorm ads (they can be identified using the firefox addon but i dont know any other way) If you see a product you like google it directly, do not click Phorm ads. they will loose a lot of money and hopefuly go bankrupt, ruining the lives of the employees. Thank you for your time! Spread the word and be careful! Any other ways of blocking Phorm are definitely welcome here so please do tell. (Mods: I realize this is rant-like however i would like this to become a full discussion on Phorm and inform more users about its "service" and as such i would be grateful if it wasnt moved to the rant section. Im also not sure if this forum is the right one but its the closet i could find to the right forum)
