True ssl means buying a ssl certificate(and I've never seen it on free hosting), but what I'm suggesting is just letting us use https/443, probably as a copy of http.

Ubuntu is probably most like Windows, I'd suggest ordering the free cds (live and installation).There may be a distro with something like wine built in, but I doubt it would do much else.

Runescape have been doing this themselves for ages, but hopefully eBay will stop all game-monies now.

Either edit the php.ini (I hated Xampp, so not sure), or add something to your hosts file to direct something like http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ to that file.
