A 98 year old woman wrote this to her bank. The bank manager thought it amusing enough to have it published in the New York Times. Can you imagine? This was written by a 98 year old woman. She certainly isn't suffering from senility. I only wish I had the panache' to compose a letter like this. It captures just how I feel about current banking practices. What with the way banks handle your accounts today, have you ever had something like this happen? I do know that they process things in the following order regardless of exact time of day each item arrives at the bank. 1. They always post any debits first starting with the largest amount. 2. Then they post any deposits (credits) you have made even if it arrived before the debits. Why do they do this? Because if you are cutting things close by depending on a morning deposit to cover your expenses that day, they can cause your account to be overdrawn by processing the deposit last. And by starting with the largest amount, they can hit you with more overdraft fees. Example: I have a balance of $50.00 in my account on Monday AM. I make a deposit of $200.00 to my account in the morning. I now have $250.00 to cover my days business. Or so I think. I do my business by debit card all day. Purchase #1 $20.00 Purchase #2 $15.00 Purchase #3 $ 5.00 Purchase #4 $60.00 Purchase total $100.00 so I should have $150.00 left in my account, right? At the end of the day the bank posts to my account: Balance $50.00 1. Purchase #4 $60.00 Balance -$10.00 Overdraft charge -$30.00 2. Purchase #1 $20.00 Balance -$60.00 Overdraft charge -$30.00 3. Purchase #2 $15.00 Balance -$105.00 Overdraft charge -$30.00 4. Purchase #3 $ 5.00 Balance -$140.00 Overdraft charge -$30.00 My balance is now -$170.00 because of overdraft charges. They finally process my deposit of $200.00 and I have a balance of $30.00 in my account. Please note that if they had processed the purchases in the order they were transacted there wouldn't have been an overdraft until the 4th Purchase since I had $50.00 in there to cover the first 3 transactions that totalled only $40.00. Of course if they had posted to my account in the order of all the transactions, there would never have been an overdraft at all. AND THIS IS HOW THE BANKS GET YOUR MONEY TODAY!!!!!

Please consider moving the Introductions from a subforum of General Talk. It would be easier to find as a subforum of Have your say. Not buried so deep in the forum structure. It would also show up in the pull-down menu of the topic pages. So many newbies are missing the intro subforum of General Talk, subforum of Have your say. Thanks Saint_Michael for the explanation. I have never been timed out, but then my files are not that large when I do upload. This does give me a better understanding of bandwidth use and how it is fairly distributed among the members. Always kind of wondered how it worked. I wouldn't want to hog all the badwidth.

Wow, what a list of things people received. I only got an iPod and a microwave for big items. Also some perfume, a couple of sweaters and candy. Looks like Santa wasn't impressed with my behavior last year when I see how much everybody else got. I guess I will have to do better this year. As for the giving, I gave money, DVDs, Breyer horse, and clothing.

You are right, SM, about the 56K dial up. That is all I have right now, plus we are still on a pulse phone system. Even with the ISPs Accelerator program, I am still very slooooowww. Downloads take me hours instead of mins. I find that the "dirty" lines in the neighborhood also cause interference which slows things down as well. I can relate somewhat to electron's problems, but my ISP is more reliable than that.

I DO NOT visit porn sites, so there are not cookies from places like that on my puter (I am the only user). However, I did catch an ad pn Trap the other day that said nobody under 18 allowed, not to click on it if you were. Well, since I am over 18 and stupid, I clicked on it. Aw, mine is of a more simple developement. We live in Michigan and Mich seemed like a natural evolution. It is also not gender specific, which comes in handy sometimes. I notice it has raised a chuckle or two with people over its non-originality, but it works for me and that's what counts.

Just below my sig you will find my idea of the little things in life. As we rush through each day, we need to stop and smell the rose. Little things mean a lot. I could go on with all the cliche's I have heard over the years, but it all boils down to the little things in life are very important. Learning to appreciate them is something that comes with maturity and age. Don't go through life missing them and then look back to see how much you have missed.

Oh so, you are both young adults. I agree with the keeping in touch advice. There is really nothing you can do to guarantee you will both feel the same in the years to come, even if you were not apart. People usually mature into different personalities as they grow older. What seems to fit right now, may not fit at all over time. By keeping in touch, you will be able to tell if you are beginnng to grow apart or together. This will be a trying time emotionally for both of you, but in the future you will know if this relationship is one worthy of committment. Unfortunately, the best advice I can come up with is wait and see. Borrowing the old cliche'; Time will tell. You will both be experiencing other and different kinds of relationships while you are apart, just by mere exposure to fellow classmates. Good Luck!

What a fantastic ordeal. I know nothing about Cycles or driving/riding them, but it is a brilliant thing that you were able to put into effect what you had learned. Most people would have paniced beyond reasoning. You were able to maintian a level head, react correctly and come through with flying colors (no pun intended). You have had a brush with death that nobody would like to experience. Congratulations on cheating it. Now, be even more careful in the future. I do happen to know that Cycles are difficult to see in traffic. I would think a Cycle driver/rider would have to be doubley defensive on the road. God Bless.
