1. Creating password submit forms through Javascript is an extermely low-security method of keeping documents private, and should not be used for anything TOO important. The reason for this is that JavaScript code can be seen in the source of the page, which can give away the password, and even if you put the code as a seperate .js file and jst embed it into the actual login page, the source will still reveal where this .js file is.
2. I think we should archieve some of the older topics in an archieve section, away from the main ones. My reason for this is simple - there are many topics on Xisto forums that haven't been posted in for at least half-a-year or even a year. Many of these topics will likely never be touched. Also, a number of these "old topics" end up getting revived by members who find the topics in a forum search without realising the topic's age, and while this can be a good thing for the more informative topics, some topics such as those regarding "news" are too old to be useful anymore. So yes, I think there should be a forum cleanup. But with the posts archieved, not deleted.
3. Making money online is a possibility, and something many hundreds of businesses do on a daily basis. However, it requires patience and hard work to make yourself a reliable source of internet income - there's no such thing as "easy money", and anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to scam you.The best hints are to sell products and services that you know will capture the intrests of a wide audience. Then try to get those products well-advertised. Things like Google Adsense and other Advertising Revenue strings can give a nice boost to your income, but they rarely make profit themselves and can be easily abused.
4. The general concensus with most Business and Personal users who have used Windows Vista is that it is a major backward step from Windows XP. It's memory-intensive, extremely incompatible with most Windows Programs to date, and confusing to many users. Plus... ...that just says everything. You may be interested to know that, as a licenced Windows Vista User, you are officially entitled to a free downgrade to Windows XP. This news article at PC Advisor details the process; if you really can't stand Vista, maybe you should check it out.
5. I was just looking through this thread, and I noticed a post I made 18 months ago, where I pretty much claimed I use MSN for everything. God, how time changes. I can't stand Hotmail anymore!I use GMail for my E-mail now, and I'm never switching. I'm still using Windows Live Messenger Plus! for Instant Messaging though, but that's because all my friends use it. If they didn't, I'd move to Google Talk in a jiffy.
6. The answer to #9 is over forty billion. (Edit) And #10 is the command "yes". #13 is "Question 13 is Unlucky" Looks like DeM0nFiRe got it before me.
7. Despite being a keen Firefox User, one of many Beta Testers for Firefox 2, and a registrant to their extension database (which, I must add, has changed a LOT over the years), I never actually got around to downloading any Firefox 3 Betas until last week, when I downloaded Firefox 3 Beta 5. But you know what? Despite my heavy reliance and love for Firefox, I have to agree with many of the points raised here. Firefox 3 has too many problems - mainly cosmetic, I'll admit, but also functional. For one thing, Firefox 3's default theme sucks. The "Forward" and "Back" buttons are WAY too big, and seem out-of-place even in their normal positions. The lack of an obvious "Home" button (yes, I KNOW it can be dragged from the Bookmarks tab - but why the hell is it there anyway?) can be annoying if your Homepage is actually a page you constantly refer to, such as a news site. I am also annoyed by it's default behaviour towards extensions. Firefox 3 will disable Unsigned extensions, to prevent security risks - which seems a sensible idea at first glance. However, it also prevents enabling of extensions that are deemed "insecure" due to lack of this signature and no apparent download security. The problem here is, hardly any Firefox extensions are digitally signed, due to the majority of them being made by independant developers who either don't know how to, or can't afford a signature to digitally sign them, and Firefox haven't actually defined the methods by which Firefox deems downloads "secure". This means a large number of legitimate add-ons will be rendered useless! (In fact, one such extension I have in Firefox 2 creates "opt-out" cookies for untrusted services - which is supossed to increase security, but is treated by Firefox 3 as a security risk!) Granted, there are a lot of useful features - I am thankful for it's support for VeriSign's Extended Validation SSL Certificate, a service currently only available to IE7, and the Favourites Search in the Address bar is very useful - but many of these features are not only inconvienient; they can also confuse users who have got used to the simplicity of browsers before it, or those users who already use Firefox and have customised it to their individual tastes. Maybe I'm not seeing the bigger picture - and if there ARE major benefits to the common user that I am not aware of, I humbly appologise - but to me, Firefox 3 seems overworked and underthought. I couldn't bear to use it for more than an hour, and I sincerely hope that feeling does not remain in me. Like I said, I am avid user and fan of Firefox - and if I may add my own personal opinion, I don't think there's a better browser out there - but this is just dissapointing. Take debate if you will, but my point is made.
8. DeM0nFiRe is completely right. What many people don't realise is that, while graphics can make a good game better, they can't make a bad game good. Gameplay is the most important part of a game - if a game isn't fun to play, and there is no reason to keep playing it, then nobody will play it. Call me old-fashioned, but I actually prefer many retro games to modern ones. I can't get enough of Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Donkey Kong and all those games. In fact, I recently bought one of those compendiums of old games that you can get on almost all consoles and handhelds now. Many of the games were over 20 years old, but I'm addicted to them all. NOW tell me that graphics mean something...
9. You should never be FORCED to look at an advert. Obviously a person will need to see an advert to actually know about your product, but if you force it on them, it will annoy people and they might be put off visiting your site. For this reason, I am against all kinds of pop-up, pop-under, or window-on-page adverts. People like to think they have free will, even if that is not the case. Give them a choice and they will show interest if they feel it is worth something to them. Force it, and you've lost them for good.
10. I regularily have Deja Vu expiriences, so I know that they are a reality. But as for the idea of Deja Vu fortelling the future or not... I'm not really sure where I stand about that. The main argument against that idea, is that most people who expirience Deja Vu usually forget about it until the event happens - which, from a sceptical point of view, could simply be a case of suggestion. However, due to my own personal expiriences I do not believe that suggestion can be used as a way of explaining all Deja-Vu cases, even if most of them can be explained that way.I personally believe that dreams CAN provide a warning to future events, as there are many documented cases of people who have had such dreams. But whether or not dreams offer an insight to the future itself... that is a topic that will never be answered.
11. The universe is infinitely big, and we've only been able to explore about 0.005% of it. So who knows what could be out there? I am one of the many millions of people who believes that alternative forms of life could exist out there. In fact, if things like "Antimatter" or "unparticles" are proven true, we have pretty much already proven there is. I think the real question is, though: "If there IS alternative life, what is it and how does it exist?" Just another question we may never answer...
12. You guys are evil. You know, one of my friends actually tried something like this on me once, except the shortcuts he made led to an image file that simply said the words "You suck". I didn't fall for it for a second though - Windows experts know when they're being duped. But I'm going to try this next April Fools day. Let's see how many people actually fall for it!
13. Well, our community is made of mostly polite, helpful people, so the only way this system could be biased is if a person registered to this site purely to discredit us, and gave everybody negative ratings. But even if that happened, the sheer amount of good people giving their honest ratings would make the "biased" ratings pale into insignifigance. If we're REALLY worried about bias, make it so that only expirienced users (ones that have been around a while, or have many quality posts) can use it, and gradually allow others into it based on that criteria. If a person abuses it, we just take it away again. Though to be honest I don't see why we should worry about it until there's good evidence that bias is already affecting or may soon have a negative effect on the system.
14. I'm not addicted to Coca-Cola. I'm addicted to Pepsi :lol:Actually, I am addicted to something, but it's not soft drinks. It's cherries. I just love the flavour of cherries, so much so that almost every time I buy a drink during a shopping trip, it's a Cherry Coke. But I suppose that's nothing to do with this topic.I do like Coca-Cola, but I'm not addicted myself. I know many people who are, however...
15. I noticed the Post Rating Module a while before this topic was posted, and I was waiting for this topic to appear as I had a few questions to ask. Reading the replies to this topic, most of the questions have already been answered, but there's one I'd still like answering: when exactly was this module made active on the forums?I think it's a useful system, as it gives clear feedback on users and the quality and helpfulness of their posts. I am worried about the possibility of abuse, but I think the benefits outweigh the risks. I especially like how there are "Spelling Mistakes" and "Spam" options, so you can inform the user of these shortcomings without actually posting them - reducing spam while still keeping a sense of "Political Correctness".
16. I don't think it is possible for ANYTHING to kill Google, simply because it is well known, has a high reputation, and many people rely on their services. However, looking at this site I can see it's obvious merit, and I have to say it has the potential to become a close competitor. I would really like to see Google implement a rating system for their own search results - they can generate quite a lot of useless results sometimes and it would be good to have some human interaction involved in deciding the relevant ones...
17. Do you guys even read? I've already asked for this topic to be closed. Please don't post here anymore - I'm making a new topic to discuss recent changes.
18. I can definately see Google making their own OS one of these days, and I think they should do it, too. But I don't think it should be done yet.Google has some useful tools that could play very well in creating their own OS - Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Mail, Google Notebook and the Google Pack to name a few. What's more, they have been developing offline versions for Businesses, so it is possible for them to make an OS that doesn't require an internet connection to use. However, Google do not have much expirience in actual software yet - their whole business resides around Ajax-based on-the-web tools, and only Google Talk and Google Notebook are currently publicly available as software. Also, making an OS can cost a fair deal of money, and while Google does have a lot of money, one can only wonder if it will be enough - especially if it should fail. Not to mention the fierce competition they'd get with Microsoft, which is ALREADY becoming a problem with many of their tools...One day, but not yet, I'd like to think that it will happen. And if it ever does, I guarantee that they'll have my full support - I trust Google so much these days, and I hate Microsoft so much, that for Google to release an OS would be heaven for me, and I would buy it without even a single thought.
19. I read about this about 48 hours ago on BBC myself. I am OUTRAGED how such a deal could even be considered by the very companies many of us trust to give us safe, reliable internet connections every single day. Not only that, but it's completely breaking the law - the ISPs are installing Spyware on their servers, that track your browsing habits, saves the data to their computers, then sends it to an Adware service, which sends you adverts, without your permission! I have already installed the Dephormation Firefox Add-on, and I hope that this deal NEVER goes through. 121Media caused enough legal trouble, and I don't know how they've been able to continue operations to this date. Please, God, get them shut down! Otherwise, no-one will ever be able to trust the internet again, and what next?
20. I'd take a Wireless-Enabled laptop, and maybe hook it up to a Sattelite Link if I need to. Then I could order food and living essentials, communicate with everybody via e-mail, and basically have everything I need.Plus, my laptop would run Linux, so it would never crash. I just have to make sure I don't drop it in the sea...
21. I've done some major changes to the website since I originally posted this article, so I'm going to create a new topic for people to comment in, just to make it easier to track the newer comments from the older ones. With that in mind, can any moderator please close this topic so I don't have two going at once? Thank you.
22. I'm an expirienced RPG Maker user, and I can't say I've ever expirienced this problem myself, either. I'm not sure how to solve it.
23. Actually, I haven't fixed the problem, I just know what it is now. I still can't figure out how to get rid of the two denied directories... And obviously, I need to put more research into Linux. I should really learn about these things if I'm testing linux right now and am starting to think I should make it a default OS on my PC... Sadly, that is not the case. Joomla! uploads Installer files to the /media directory, which I CHMODded to 777 as soon as I installed Joomla, and a check of it now finds it is still 777. But, the installers are still not being uploaded. There may be a script used by Joomla! for the uploads that is not CHMODded to 777, but I can't find it. EDIT: That's strange, it's working again! Must have been a problem with Joomla. All problems have been resolved, can this topic be closed please?
24. I installed the Joomla! 1.0.13 package through Fantastico. But, I doubt what you said is actually the problem. Only three of the directories used by Joomla are affected by this problem, and they themselves were working ok before today. EDIT: Actually you may be on to something, jlhaslip. After careful examination, I realised that two of the three affected directories were in fact created by a mod I had used for Joomla. But that does not explain why I am unable to upload files to the /media directory (which was NOT created by the mod)... I think I'm going to have to contact that mod's developers though. I actually uninstalled the mod that created those two directories, and it said in their help file that "in the event of a failed uninstall, you should be able to finish the job yourself by deleting the files created in the "/components" and "/administrator/components" directories

Sorry for the double-post, but I thought it would be disorganised if I made this post part of the previous one. I've discovered the problem. You were right, jlhaslip - as it turns out, my CPanel is denying me permissions to any file that was created using a script. But it is also blocking scripts that upload or create files from actually putting the files onto the server. This is a problem as I have some modifications and skins for Joomla that can only be properly installed if uploaded and installed using Joomla's inbuilt "upload and install" scripts. It is also preventing me from uninstalling some of the mods. Is there a way to fix this problem? Notice from truefusion: merged
25. You have not read my post through to completion. I am unable to change the CHMOD permissions on the directories I mentioned - they always reset to 755 and I get "Permission Denied" errors. But that is just one of the problems. Please read more thoroughly next time. Or, did I not make my post clear enough? I appologise if that is the case. Even though I have the literacy skills of a 12th Grader, I still fail to phrase complicated problems effectively.
