  1. Jommla was created as an off shoot of the Mambo project. I think it has the smae core as Mambo, but starts aat version 1. I don't fullt understand the differences, but I know that Joomla templates work in Mambo 4.5.2.
  2. Windows Vista is still in the beta stage, and will be released sometime next year (gee, only 5 days left until New Years). Right now, only developers have a copy of Vista.
  3. I noticed an upgrade for Mambo 4.5.2 to either Joomla! or a newer version of Mambo, but it told me that it's for installs without components or stuff. So confused, not bothering with upgrade.
  4. Well, uh that's kinda what the purpose of these scripts are. To protect certain pages, you insert a small snippet of PHP code into the file and save it with a .php extension. What do you want to accomplish with one of these scripts?
  5. I'm not saying that I'm a huge expert on this stuff, but if I had the money, I would go for Dreamveaver, because as far as I know, it has more feattures and works with PHP, ASP and ASP.Net (Susan Wisowaty, a Microsoft programmer, says not to use it with those), and ColdFusion of course. Also, I think FrontPage has the advantage of being somewhat inexpensive ($109 USD or something?) and I figured out how to use it quickly (not that I use it or anything).
  6. If you look on the PHP section of HotScripts (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/), you can probably find a script that will suit your needs. They have a lot of nifty things in that section, like hosting control panels, and more.
  7. In fact, that's almost exactly what I did. I downloaded XAMPP to my computer, and used that and one of my Xisto MySQL databases (the one in XAMPP didn't work for some reason) to install and run it. It was pretty fast, but I haven't touched it since that night (like many things I do). zPanel is in fact Not open source, as they say on their site; if you are found using it without the copyright notice then you can get arrested.Yes, cPanel is excellent (wish it were free, not hundreds of $$$) and DirectAdmin is OK too, but I wanted to have my own approach (and actually host other users, against TOS, so I couldn't, and asked about this ahead of time just in case) to running my site. Notice from KuBi: Posts merged
  8. It helps in reducing bandwidth usage - only small XML bits are sent to and from the server. Fast? You bet! Gmail is 20x faster than Hotmail.
  9. I tried using the shoutbox in an ordinary HTML page, but I got a JavaScript error from both Netscape 7.2 and IE 6. I looked at it on the Antilost forum, and say that it's pretty good looking (along with the AntiLost forum-how long have you guys been around? I don't really see that many posts).
  10. I'm guessing that the <embed> tag still exists (I'll look it up on http://www.w3schools.com/) in XHTML. As far as I know, it's a cross-browser tag. Correct me if I'm wrong.
  11. I choose not to install it, not only because I might end up breaking the hosting TOS, but also because it's huge. It's something like 30 MB uncompressed (and even compressed, it would take forever to upload the 13 MB .zip file over my internet connection).
  12. All of the scripts in Fantastico use MySQL (as far as I know, I never used all of them). Fantastico's purpose it to make it super easy to install the scripts that it includes. Other control panels have a similar feature.
  13. It won't reveal the data if:A) The file is outside of your public_html directory or;) There are no links to the file. Search engines find pages on a site through links, so no link=no index record (in other words, it won't show up in a search).
  14. You can remove the ads with a few edits. It seems like a pretty good script, although it might violate copyrights because of the Google-like interface.
  15. I hold the same stand as everyone else here. Just ignore it and hopefully you won't have any problems. In Gmail, which I use, you can easilty view those headers. To do so, click More Options at the top of a message, and click Show Original. That will show the email with all the headers and replies and stuff.
  16. To tell you the truth, I'm very happy with Gmail. It's fast and organized, and most importantly, free. I still wish you luck with your Yahoo Mail change.
  17. I found a hosting control panel package called Zpanel. Supposedly it works with Windows and *nix. I am thinking of uploading and installing it on my web space here, to see what it is like, and then maybe install it on my SuSE Linux box here at home. Would there be any problems installing it that would mess up the server or would it violate the hosting TOS?
  18. It's similar to HTML. You type out an XML-like file, and upload it to your server. The differences: you need a server with Flex installed; the source code is compiled into a Macromedia Flash file, and the server makes a page that loads that Flash file; you need to make a whole bunch of configuration files to use your Flex "application"; and in general, it's expensive and designed for large companies who have their own servers.Bottom line: So much to learn, so much to pay, the average web developer or website administrator won't like it. If you want to try it, download he installer from Macromedia's website, and install it (you don't need admin access on Windows 2000/XP). Otherwise, forget it exists.
  19. I might abondon my idea for SMFShop. I kind of like it, it took me about 15 minutes to learn how to use it, and the "Send Email to Admin v2" works for my purposes. Question: A) how do I make the credits go down once an hour (maybe run a cron job that lowers the money field in members table)? What is the bank feature?
  20. Sorry to see tou go from Xisto's excellent free service..Computinghost is probably better for you though. I am in high school (from 7:40 AM to 6:10 PM) but I somehow get my work done and manage to post here.
  21. I think I'll try writing a point system of my own. It won't be nearly as good as OpaQue's, but I will try to put in some of the major features, and not require you to go to the form's home page to check your points (in other words more easily accessible). If you have any suggestions, just PM me or reply here.
  22. The last two years, I took two buses to school everyday (if you don't live in or near NYC, don't expect to understand the rest of this), them being the reliable and simple Q46 down Union Turnpike to Queens Boulevard, and tthe Q10 to Lefferts Boulevard or the Q37 to Abingdon Road. The Q46, which is run by the MTA, is a good route; the buses come somewhat often, it's a striaght route (unlike the Q74, which goes on Main Street and makes many turns at the beginning and end no matter which direction you are going), and they have hybrid buses (which have sort of been proven to improve service, see http://www.schallerconsult.com/pub/lowfloor.htm) which I am a huge fan of. The Q37 just didn't come often at all; and the Q10 is a nightmare, with buses laying over for something like 20-30 minutes, leaving (prospective) passengers standing for a long time (even in the cold winter months). Hopefully the MTA and (I think) Jerome Cooper, president of the Transit Alliance (consisting of Green Lines, Triborough Coach, Jamaica Bus, and Command Bus), will get their act together and make the move over to MTA Bus.
  23. The Canon Powershots are the best cameras I can think of; they are well-priced, easy to use and feature-packed. The PowerShot A70, which my dad bought, even made it to PC World's Top 10 Digital Cameras one month (a long time ago though). The successors to the A70 are just as good and inexpensive.
  24. For a little while I was interested in Macromedia Flex, a presentation-level framework for "rich internet applicatiions". It isn't terribly hard to code in, but the apps you make can be a paiin to deploy if you don't use Flex Builder, a Dreamweaver like IDE. I installed it one Windows XP Pro and it went flawleesly, I even did it without admin priveleges. You can make some pretty nifty things that HTML, CSS and JavaScript just can't do. It's nice to experiment in, but if you aren't a big company or have your own server and lots of money, don't get it.
  25. I bet that Gmail will stay beta for a long time. I am a loyal user and despise Hotmail: too many ads, too slow, bad GUI, bad everything almost. With all of the invites around the planet, Gmail doesn't really need to become final version; however, it will make many people happyif they do. The 2672 MB (more by the time you read this) is really good although I probably won't be around by the time I can use it all. BTW, if you want invites, just PM me.
