  1. I saw that a couple of days ago and was peed off that I couldn't join because my site has been completely developed yet (it was my own choice not to sign-up).I suggest you do take this on board though (ONLY if you are a standards-based designer/developer) to gain inbound traffic. It's free traffic, so don't be too worried about giving links to other naked sites
  2. Interesting site, but I have seen there tutorials before on different sites. Perhaps they are steeling them. Anyway, I'd just like to add that http://www.pixel2life.com/ is an excellent source of tutorials for many different graphics editors.
  3. XHTML = eXtensible Hyper-Text Mark-up Language. I suggest you look at http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/%23xhtml Transitional is a DTD of XHTML. XHTML has three doctypes. Strict, Transitional and Frameset. Glad to see you are into CSS. Check out css zen garden, mezzoblue, and a list apart for excellent CSS guidance.
  4. Google Earth is not yet complete. Not everyone's house can be seen, and in some countries, the photos are forbidden. Google user interfaces are based on simplicity. MSN however are tailored to your classy people. Those that want all the fancy greens and blues as well as the latest in your face features. Something that Google doesn't reach for. It wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft was planning a hostile take-over of Google. That is if google have shares to sell. As for this MSN Maps, there is also Windows Virtual Earth. Which one are you referring to? http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ or https://www.bing.com/maps Either way, Google has so far been the dominant in the industry, so the only way MSN would feat against it would be a take-over or claim of copyright theft... which won't happen.
  5. I fixed the link, so people who find posts missing, I deleted them.If you don't have shockwave player installed, then you need to get it done. However, when you install it, the I agree is bundled with the Yahoo toolbar installer. There is a very easy way to get around this. Don't tick the box.I know this would usually quit the thing and make you install it later. But, in this case the installer thing will disappear, but it will continue installing. Then, in a couple of minutes or so, it will pop-up asking you for details and then it will finish.Mine was embarrassing...for the first time.
  6. You're best going for a simple CMS (Content Management System) so that they can edit the content when they login.
  7. vBulletin and IPB are not what you are looking for. They have thousands of features and the result is a heavy database and space load.I would personally recommend PHPBB or SMF. You could also try the several other smaller ones out there.
  8. Firstly, this is the type of topic that in 99% of all cases ends up the in flaming of other people. So, please be careful and considerate when making your post and don't deamonise others for their beliefs, whether it is in an omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent being, or whether it is down to science.===================Whether evolution or God, I just don't understand the concept of why. I know that sounds stupid and immature, but shouldn't we concentrate on the short-term and what is here. Rather than speculating on something that is truly out of our comprehensible reach at this point in our life.
  9. Go to DELL.CO.UK and get a computer that you like the look of. Then, use the upgrade options. Below are the specs of the best computer system I could get out of DELL within your price budget. 10. Saint, I'm going to say this in the best possible way, from one moderator to another.YOU'RE PISSING ME OFF.Not only are these sexist (Sexism is discrimination against people based on their sex rather than their individual merits) in that 'ladies' want pretty and soft-glowing images, but they are also using up the valuable bandwidth of Asta and doing my head in.You could say that I am being very narrow minded, but at this point, I'm being very cheesed off.
  11. I have to re-itorate your words, please give a detailed explanation, of what you mean. Are you saying that you want Dreamweaver to be able to update content live on a site? That would be a stupid thing to do and would take more time setting up and fixing errors, than simply getting a piece of software like Contribute.Vujsa has created a CMS tutorial (CMS 101) in the PHP section, which you will find useful if you want to create one from scratch.
  12. I think people are not getting the part of 2GB download. It is going to cost a lot for it to be viable.Anyway, we have much greater connections now. At the college I am about to attend, they will be improving their connection to 6GB. This involves a lot of wires and redirects. They already have 2GB, and from my induction day, it was like opening pages that are on your computer.Just remember, that the internet connection can be 5TB, but the computer handling the requests will be limited to it's processor and memory as well as page file.Answer to abhiram, your download isn't judged on your upload. You could download from a server quicker than you can upload to it.
  13. Signatures are getting a little boring and one-way now. In the beginning, it was fun and lead the way to an increase in the number of people using Photoshop and gaining skills, but now it is, as I have said before, boring.Until touch-pad screens with super O/S are released, then I'm afraid that signatures aren't going to get any better in the future when it comes to features. I know it is a graphic, but look at the numerous features of JPEG 2000 or the full features of PNG.
  14. If you get an hosting account (paid or free here) then you will most likely get Fantastico. It comes with scripts that are easy to install, and the CMS list is quite extensive.Personally, I think that Joomla/Mambo are the best ones for commercial sites, but not good for personal ones.I detest PHPNuke/Postnuke simply due to their organised mess. From this, I have learnt that it is sometimes best to start building your own - I have and it will have the features that I want, and I can extend it at a later point.--mik
  15. Short answer yes. I don't have time for the long one. They're a little samey. You're designs are great and the effects you show are basic but they work. I would suggest you check the problem with the rollover on the images, they move a couple of pixels upwards for some reason, that I can't be bothered investigating.I think that it would be better if you changed your table layout to divisions. They are easy to accomplish and can provide a better standard than tables (they also offer better cross-browser control).Anyway, back onto the design. I think you could do better in your header if you actually made a gradient off your back, instead of using the preset ones.I like the personal approach and that you aren't restrictive on your language. IF only the rest of the designers out there would use the words best to describe things.--mikP.S. I bet your dog and chinchilla are happy that they have a site
  16. Not everyone works on something constantly for whatever the total period of work has been (e.g. a design might take a total time of 25 minutes to make, but it might take 2 weeks for the person to get it done due to other things or the first part might be done in a couple of minutes and then it has been forgotten about and resumed later on).As for you composition, I suggest you use your skills in the graphics editor to explore more styles and make things blendable. That is to say that the guy on the left shouldn't stick out like a sore thumb, but nor should he look like a needle in a hay-stack.I would aslo check your positioning of objects. Like the guy on the left, he is abut 2 or 3 pixels from the bottom edge, which makes him look like a floating body.Try smoothing and burning the edges of the objects so that they merge with the background better. There are various tutorials on this site and across the web that are based on signature design. I suggest you look at them to improve your style.
  17. You are correct about the lighthouse Jeigh. mik's Question 1:There is approximately 6,000,000,000 (6 billion) people on the planet Earth. If you multiply together the number of fingers (include thumbs) on the right hand of everyone, what number do you get? mik's Question 2: There was a group of people in a yacht. One of them tripped over the cooler and fell over-board. He had nothing to keep him afloat, and it took 30 minutes for anyone to realise that he had disappeared. He was onconsciencious. It was a further 2 hours before he was resqued. Why didn't he drown? [spoil]He managed to float by himself, despite the fact that he could not survive in a pool without holding onto something.[/spoil]
  18. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is when you design and develop your site to be indexed as easy as possible for the bots that the various search engines send out. When a bot runs into frames and iframes, it is sent through all sorts of loops and it can take longer for your site to be indexed, therefore affecting your Page Rank and position in the search engine results. IFRAMES are the old way of seperating content and dragging live content into a site. If you took the time to design your sites properly, then iframes aren't needed. In fact, many people prefer non-framed pages. Using divisions (div) tags allows you more control and cross-browser compliance and validates much more effectively. Just look at it this way, how many professional or semi-professional sites use iframes. If you do want content to be pulled into your pages like with what happens with frames and iframes, then I suggest you start learning PHP. It has an excellent and more controllable function, known as the include(). If you want to pull in a page into your main page, simply use <? include("pagename.extension"); ?>The php tags won't render in the source code, so it protects you to a certain extent.
  19. Go to a domain name seller, tick the boxes that you want to buy, then fill in the form. Once you have done that, most companies will give you instructions after that. Just remember to shop around and look for the cheap but good ones.
  20. You barstuard, it took me ages for that one.The five people take the eggs out, but does the last one take the basket as well? Therefore leaving the egg in the basket?
  21. In answer to your latest one m^e, POUR the juice from the second glass into the 5th.
  22. I'm currently in management of two forums (https://www.hugedomains.com/domain_profile.cfm?d=antilost&e=com and m^e's business site forum) and I help out here as a global mod.As well as taking on my own responsibilities as a member, I also help out to keep people within the rules and regulations of the boards. IF people do not stay within those rules then they are punished.I only have a personal forum to test out my skills in the various aspects of design and development and to have a little play around. However, with the projected launch of my own web-solutions site the responsibility of keeping spammers and all of the crap out will grow.As others have said before me, it depends on how much effort you are willing to put into keeping things clean and is irrelevant of trouble-causers.
  23. I would also like to add that you're best getting at least 13 credits and make sure you have decent posts - that is to say posts that have good depth and contribute something meaningful to the community and its members. One question though, you said that the president of the sorority wanted you to design the website, why not get her to pay for the hosting and domain, that way it is less stress on you. If you think about it, she will eventually need to by a domain name anyway, and pointing it to an account that may get suspended due to inactivity wouldn't look that good on your part. Cheap hosting can be found at Xisto's commercial website - https://xisto.com/
