OpenOffice Or Microsoft ? openoffice.org or Microsoft Office
yordan replied to JMC1405241503's topic in Software
No problem with the quote button now.I was disappointed with OpenOffice. When interacting with people using Microsoft Word, the layout of the document change, the polices change, and when you add things the original authors feel you messed up their nice documents with your ugli addons. Moreover, starting up Microsoft word needs a reasonable time on my system, starting OpenOffice needs a lot of time. So, I definitively switch to abiword for my own usage. I use Microsoft Word viewer (free) for reading the Microsoft documents, and I use abiword (very small and also free) for writing my own ones, in a way which is compatible with Microsoft word, even if the page layout seems different. So, I open my collegue document, view it, and I write my own document saying "on page 3 add the following line". -
+1 for partition Magic I do such a re-partiton at least once a month on my systems, because I do often different kinds of testing. I killed two motherboards during last eight years, and I had no disk problem yet on the systems where I used Parition magic.

@jcguy : you are right, it's possible to use Microsoft access, having the data on a remote database : mysql database if you have a small Unix computer, or an oracle database if you have a huge AIX computer with undreds of terabytes data. Access has it's own settings where you explain that the data are not local to your computer, but are hosted by a remote database. Of course it has to be correctly installed and configured (strangely, Microsoft things work well when linked to Microsoft other things, and need a lot of administration if linked to things like Oracle or Informix or even mysql).Unfortunately, I did not use access that way, I am more familiar with Oracle, but I have seen people using that kind of bridges for demonstrating purposes.Regards Yordan

Recently, I was disappointed with OpenOffice, so I was motivated for spending a couple of hours testing abiword. The look and feel is nice, I like it. Several things work correctly. Abiword during my test was able to open a Microsoft Word document. The http links are visible and can be opened. I was able to write down a simple document, and open it using Microsoft word ; only the background colour was lost. Some things do not really work. When reading a Microsoft Word document having a table of contents, the words « table of contents » appear but the table is not there. The tables are correctly displayed, but the incorporated images disappear. When I tried to open a 60 pages pdf document, it started converting the document and after waiting one night the document was still not opened.Abiword is not able to write down in pdf format, whereas OpenOffice can (it does it badly but it does). This means that, if you don’t want to use paying things, and if like me you don’t like the too big and too slow OpenOffice suite, you do it that way :1) You use AbiWord (free) fro creating your document.2) You use : - Acrobat reader (free) for reading the pdf files- Microsoft Word viewer (free) for reading the Microsoft Word files- Microsoft Powerpoint viewer (free) for viewing the pdf files.

Wallpapers Some designs I made from scratch enjoy
yordan replied to Jorsart's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Nice freedom, and nice job, keep going like this. I am curious to see your last signature, is it worth to change it, could we imagine the next one to be nicer ? -
Please help me choosing. I need to change my hardware. I have to decide between two scanners :- Epson Perfection 2580 PHOTO- Epson Perfection 2480 PHOTO Does somebody know both of them ? They look rather similar, but there is a significant difference in price : 20 dollars. I would like to know if the difference between them is worth the 20% increase of price. I want to scan photos and print them on photo paper, that's why I want this kind of scanners. If you knowe these models, please tell me.Regards Yordan

I love your last poster. By the way, why the chinese ideograms ? Are you from China ? Unless they are Japanese graphics ? or simly artist's freedom ? Nevertheless, I find it really impressive. As well as your signature, i find it nice.CongratitulationsYordan -
You are right, it's great ! And you are right, you need a big computer. I had first to upgrade my cpu, than I had to change my graphic board. But it's worth it.

Hack Websites using a simple javascript
yordan replied to jcguy's topic in Websites and Web Designing
@tokoro : do you really think that somebody will answer such a question ? -
How many is too many hard drives ? No limit, I would say. As long as your computer is not slowed down because of too many disc controllers compared to number of processors, I would say there is no limit.I have seen professional systems with up to one thousand drives (yes, 1000 drives), the customer had quite a lot of data and wanted the cpu's to never wait for the disks. And the customer never complained he had too many drives.Of course, for home users, with the current systems available, I would say that a sigle 160 Gig disk or two 80 Gig disks seems enough.

Freebsd Burning & Installation Problems
yordan replied to VindicoPopulus's topic in Websites and Web Designing
And what is Connectiva ? Is it another Linux distro ? I didn't hear about this distro yet. I would personnally say that, if you never tried installing a Unix distro, openBSD is not the easiest one. Maybe you should startup with Mandrake, which installation from first-CD-boot is somehow easier, and the default settings work for most of the cases. By the way, beeping on the second CD probably means "please insert CD 3" with problems on the graphic display drivers. Regards Yordan -
@Darren : seems to be interesting from what you say. I will give statcounter a try, and will compare to Xisto's one. The one from Xisto is also really impressive, I like it. Besides that I forgot my statcounter's password, and I am still waiting for the mail with it.YordanOK, Darren, your are right, statcounter is really great. Their counters are not so nice as Xisto ones, and the menus to step inside are not really easy to understand, and I experienced several disconnections in the middle of the process of creationg your counter. But if you want something really simple, without any ads, it's a simple line to be included inside your html source. And it works anywhere, including on your own PC for testing purposes, which is not the case for the Xisto counter. So, if you want something easy to implement, very nice, with a comfortable menu-diriven settings, use Xisto's cpanel one. If you want something simple, which works on any site including your PC, use statcounter.

Google Hacks: Google Stuff You ( Don't ) Know
yordan replied to finaldesign1405241487's topic in Search Engines
@finaldesign : What you are meaning seems to be: if you know exactly how to look for something, you almost finished the job for finding it. I thing the same way. A good method for searching is the key of success and the most saving time tip in performing a search. -
@ShadowPool : From what I see at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ , it seems that clamav does not have a version directly for Microsoft Windows systems. it seems that you have to compile the distro using VC++. Is it right, or did I miss something ?

Kde Starting Problem Could not read network connection list
yordan replied to jedipi's topic in Websites and Web Designing
You probably made some changes which influated on the file listed.Have a look at that file. Open a terminal connection and look the permissions of that file.Type the following command line : CONSOLE ls -l /root/.DCOPserve_hide_0If you see "file not found", then there is a real configuration problem. If the file exists, try typingchmod ugo+rwx /root/.DCOPserve_hide_0and try connecting again to kde.Hope this helpedYordan -
Nope, it's not faster than an Ethernet cable. An ethernet direct-connect cable goes up to 100 megabits/second. A 801.11g link goes up to 500k or 1 meg/second. it's 100 times less. Moreover, try first a cable connection because it's easier to establish. Try with a cable. then add the radio additional thing (which is not really a lot, but you have one more menu, choosing between "infrastructure" mode and "ad-hoc" mode.

First Attempt At Comic-book-style Hero
yordan replied to clagnol1405241508's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Doing it fully with te computer is of course the best way. Because you can startup preparing your own tools, and reuse them after slight modifications for your future drawings from the same heroe. By the way, how long did you need until you obtained your first drawing ? -
I'm also interested by this questins. I guess that you first need to install a java server, probably apache. maybe installing Jonas withi comes bundles with tomcat should be a nice idea. let's see what experienced people will think about that.An easier way, of course, will be to use your Xisto account...

To be honest, when I say "I have no problems with wifi connections", it's almost true. I must confess that I first stop all firewalls and virusscanners, make the connections, see that I am able to send and receive files, and then I restart the firewall and the virusscan softwares. If everything is still working, I'm happy. if not, I correct the firewall settings.

Connecting To Windows 2003 Domain Under Rh8?
yordan replied to tansqrx's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Be careful with vmware. Most of operating system communication things do not work on vmware systems. So, your first try should be to install RH8 on a standalone Intel system, with standard connectivity (standard Ethernet board attached to a cable) and test the samba connectivity on it. If it works correctly, then try to add the vmware layer, and verify it's still working. If it works on a standalon machine and does not work on a vmware sub-machine, this means that vmware has to be configured more precisely. For instance, your vmwawe machine is probably a DHCP client from your main host, which is not known from your win2003 as being a master domain controller.Hope this helpedYordan -
Smallest Webserver Its a size of matchbox.
yordan replied to finaldesign1405241487's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Great ! Really promissing. Did you read the paper in the link ? They even give a live demonstration of their webserver ! Unfortunately, the link http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ in their demo server does not work, but it could have been very funny. Yordan -
Hello, welcome here. I know almost nothing about Monty Python, so your arrival will be helpful.

Because none of you is logged as root on a Linux system. and /home is read-only for everybody including yourself. Huh ? Quite not sure ! I'm convinced that people who log to Windows with administrator rights will log to Linux with root permissions. And they will have exactly the same viruses...

Connecting To Windows 2003 Domain Under Rh8?
yordan replied to tansqrx's topic in Websites and Web Designing
tansqrx seems to be at work. This could be probably a work-side problem. Probably at work he has to use Red Hat Linux 8.0 because it's certified for a given purpose (for instance certified for use with an ERP home-made thing), and then he cannot change his redhat version or his Linux version because this means validating again the whole thing against all the possible client/server combinations. So, if he wants to use samba, he has to use samba in this precise Red Hat configuration. And that's why he asks for help.
