  1. I am just fighting with the password definition (open, hexa, phrase), so differently defined on the various adapters, and now I understand why a lot of people use the "don't krypt" option, and why you could happen to surf on your neightbour's wifi network.
  2. And are you a good game designer ? Because playing the games created by a whole team is worth if they are good creators. Had I to play the games I create, I would be really disappointed !
  3. Nice ! If you had lots of more money, you would be client for an optical juke-box device.
  4. No, Kam, you were really clear, clever and gave a really good explanation. As you explain things, giving reference documents and clear comparison, everything becomes really clear. Now I know exactly how to decide, having arguments for each choice. And you are right, the performance difference is really worth the price difference. Thanks a lot. Yordan
  5. Usually, when you install a "standard" Linux system (and I'm pretty sure ubuntu does the same thing) when the installer boots from the first CD, it asks you how you are connected, usually you answer "from my Ethernet adapter", "give me automatically my IP address through DHCP", and probably your Data Name Servers (usually stated as "DNS"). And then the install program puts everywhere which is necessary at boot time. Putting things after that in /etc or in rc.d are "patching" solutions due to the fact that you forgot something. Are you connected through an Ethernet adapter ?
  6. Here start the funny game I was talking about. Linux is not fully BSD. So, unimatrix says Linux is not a Unix. Let's spend a little bit for a philosophy talking. I say that there are several Unix fields, the best known of them being BSD Unix and System V Unix. Each designer makes it's own Unix, more ore less compliant with BSD or SysV. HP-UX says it's one ist the best Unix, Sun says the same thing about Sun-Os. In my own opinion, AIX is the best one, compliant with everything, I use it for big servers, and I use Linux for playing or for man/machine interfaces. And I think Linux is a very good unix, the only differences you find between linux and the other unixes are more precisely the differences between "bash" and "ksh", which are slightly different implementation of the command-line interfaces. If you wanted to run ArkLinux and you see that it's currently directly available on Mandrake and RedHet, and as source to be compiled, your first trial should be Mandrake (because I tell you to do so) or RedHat. This will be the easiest way, first boot on the Mandrake CD, then install Mandrake, then downlad and run ArkLinux. If you read what xboxrulz says, you will not use Mandrake nor Redhat, you will insall Suze, and learn how to compile ArkLInux with the C compiler on Suze...That's the really interesting part in the OpenSource world, you ask four people the same questions, you have four different answers. Moreouver, all the four persons are right ! Regards Yordan
  7. Your topic has several questions, like 1) should I switch to Linux 2) Which linux is the best one 3) Will I be able to do everything on my pc ? Concerning the firtst question, the answer is obviously "yes" : everybody should learn how to use a unix system, and a Linux system is a rather good unix system. Concerning the second question, you will see on that forum a lot of posts concerning "which Linux is the best one", see for instance http://forums.xisto.com/topic/86265-topic/?findpost=1064320195= I think the most important is your third question : will you be able to do comfortably what you want, more confortably than on MS-Windows ? Depends from the application layer, which is simply not depending from Linux ! A) you want to do word processing. On my old Win98 PC, Microsoft word starts up far faster than OpenOffice. This is an OpenOffice problem, so you will probably have it on all the Linux distros you will find. B ) you want to look at DVD's on your PC. Did you already read DVD's when your PC ran Microsoft windows ? were you satisfied with the result ? Then, for Linux, you should look at the posts I mentionned a few line above, look at the descritpion of these distros, and look if they have a standard embedded DVD player. C) In my own opinion, you don't use your old Toshiba laptop now, you can spend a couple of hours installing a Mandrake distribution. You need to know nothing special for doing a basic install, and then you will be able to see the look and feel of Mandrake. If you don't like it, boot on a RedHat CD and install RedHat, and see if your prefer it. If not, go to Suze. Make yourself your own opinion. And then, come back to this forum and fight with the people having an opinion different from yours!
  8. were you using XP 5 years ago ? Or does it work for other windows systems also ?Yordan
  9. OK, everything is installed. Unfortunately id does not work here. 404 error : Your request for http://forums.xisto.com/topic/86590-topic/?findpost=& could not be fulfilled, because the domain name http://forums.xisto.com/ could not be resolved. So, I will not be able to check my anonymous address at ipid.shat.net and showmyip.com.
  10. Very interesting. I will give it a try. I am currently trying to install it. How do you know that it works ? Is there a site where you can check your IP address, in order to see if you are anonymized ?Yordan
  11. I just installed FileZilla Server on my Win2k in order to make it a ftp server. Quite impressive, works fine, easy to install on my pc, create users and default filesystem, impressive administration tools.Unfortunately, from that moment I was unable to login to Xisto forum from that PC, I will have to reinstall this PC. Because it's not acceptable to be unable to login to Xisto ! By the way, is there something in Xisto that prevents loggin in from a ftp server ?
  12. Nope ! No problem for filling my hard drives. Simply when modifying a strong part of my OS (changing my antivirus software or installing anew firewall) I do a PQDI backup, in order to be able to come back again. This goes drastically up to a large amount of disk space usage. And all my pictures and friend's pictures use quite a lot of space. And I found something even more consuming : a cousin put my pictures in a PowerPoint SlideShow, my ten megs of jpg pictures become several hudreds of megs!So consuming disk space is not so difficult. Sure, but unfortunately I spend rather few time home, a lot of time at work, so like a lot of people I usually think business first...
  13. Haha ! Is andrwxsCOL a spanish guy ? Yordan
  14. You know what : Microsoft Windows update is a malicious script !Hi, folks, you will laught when knowing that. When you start the new Windows Update on a Win2k system, McAfee Viruscan starts a popup window saying "A malicious script has been detected and halted". "What do you want :- allow this malicious script continue- stop this malicious script- continue what you were doing". And effectively, Microsoft Windows update is stopped until you click on "allow this malicious script to continue". Funny, isn't it ?YordanP.S. By the way, I think that Mc Afee is right. If you wollow the instructions saying "let Microsoft Update handle the udpates automatically" it will star things you don't know about, downloading files at one moment where you don't have a lot of internet bandwidth, ask for reboot at a moment where you did not schedule tat, so it's really like a malicious script you need to be informed about.
  15. @Logan Deathbringer : I re-visited your site, I'm impressed. I like it quite a lot.By the way, how did you your template ? I would like to be able to create your bottom-line navigation box as a set of clickable folder-like buttons.Maybe you are right opening the forum in a separate window, maybe it's nicer than opening in the first window.Anyway, I like it a lot, congratitulations. Yordan
  16. Nope ! If you have two disks, access time is usually divided by two (30 milliseconds on each disk instead of 30+30=60 milliseconds with a single disk). So, having a lot of disks is great. The only question is if you want to pay the price of noise and electrical power for obtainint it. Yordan
  17. I was really surprised this evening. As usual, I performed a "windows update" on my XP home edition. And I was very surprised when a saw a nice warning, saying something like "Microsft will check the validity of your Windows version", then "click here to start", explaining that this was in order to verify that I had a legitimate copy of Windows. Of course, after that check, everything continued like usual. But I really don't like the principle of looking that I own a legitimate copy of windows.By the way, how do they know that my copy was a legitimate one ? And what should I do if this check is false ? Go back to the shop and say "the copy I bought from you was not a legitimate one" ?
  18. You should learn C++, because most of the professional works are made using C++, so you will be able to work with today's developpers and modify the programs written by your collegues.I personnally know C, gcc (which is the free version of C compiler), C++. Unfortunately I don't know what ils "C#". Let's count how many people knowh about it.RegardsYordan
  19. last time I used the restore disc coming with my HP laptop, it removed all the partitions I created. And hte restore disc of my compaq claims it will do the same thing. If your restor disc works the same way as mine, it's useless creating your partitions with fdisk, the partitions will disappear after the restoring. So, what I suggest you is also the simplest way. Use your restore disk to restore your operating system. Then, shrink your disk (whic will be named c:) in order to let it a small part of your drive instead of your whole drive. The simplest way to shrink your c: partiton is using Partition Magic. I would suggest make the c: partition as small as possible, let's say 4 to 15 Giga, et let the remaining space for data and for Unix. Then, most of Linux install disks (Mandrake for instance) install themselves after Microsoft Windows and manage the dual boot thing, so you have nothing to do by yourself. I would also suggest, before installing Linux, to use Windows disk manager in order to create a small partition with a fat32 filesystem. Then, Mandrake will mount this partition on a Unix filesystem, and you will be that way be able to share files between windows and Linux : the files windows writes on the D: disk, Linux will be able to read/write them on the /mnt/windows2 filesystem. By the way, qwijibow said it right, there are several tutuorials and several posts on Xisto explaining how to do that, I expressed my own opinion here and you will see that other people think differentely. That's the funny thing in Open World : two different people have two different opinions, and probably both are right! Good luck with your formatting Yordan
  20. "format c:" is also the way I do it today, it remains the fastest and the safest way. If your C: partition is fat32 formatted, you simply boot on a ms-dos floppy. If your C: disk is a NTFS partition, you are still able to boot on a dos disquette, but ms-dos will not be able to format your drive.
  21. Unfortunately, this is not the tendancy today. Today, the tendancy is grouping blades in a single cabinet : 15 two-cpu machines in the same drawar, a single power supply, a single cooling system. And several cabinets in a single rack. So you will have 50 to 75 cpu's on a square meter...
  22. A lot of people can't get office XP because it's too expensive. I use Office 97 because I found an old licence, else I would also use Abiword. Why can't we use the most expensive things if they do very professional work ? Because we don't have money. So, if free things are good enought, why not ?If free things are almost perfect, let's cope with it.And of course, if rich people can spend their money, they shall continue. Unfortunately, only rich people can compare costly things to free things.
  23. warbird gave the german version, here are my words for the french version : "[user] thought this article might interest you." "[user] pense que ceci pourrait vous intéresser." "[user] recommends you this site." "[user] vous recommande ce site." "If this message cause any inconvenience, please forward it to [admin email]" "Si ce message vous a cause un quelconque préjudice, veuillez le transmette à[admin email]" As for a typical greeting that you would use in beginning of an email, I suggest 1) "Cher ami," (Dear friend) 2) "Bonjour," (Hi,") 3) "Me revoilà" ("I'm back,")
  24. I am convinced Artificial intelligence still has lots to do with "Le Lisp" or "commont lisp". Have a look here http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Le-Lisp as a startpoint for the Chailloux history. Basically there a two types of artifical intelligence : - the "Le Lisp" way, where the system you create is able learning by it self. - the Prolog way, where the developer's logical shemes are directly injected in his thinking machine. Both of them work with rules and knowledge database, the systems feeding their knowledge database and the rules guiding the way of making the final choices.
  25. No problem with the quote button now.I was disappointed with OpenOffice. When interacting with people using Microsoft Word, the layout of the document change, the polices change, and when you add things the original authors feel you messed up their nice documents with your ugli addons. Moreover, starting up Microsoft word needs a reasonable time on my system, starting OpenOffice needs a lot of time. So, I definitively switch to abiword for my own usage. I use Microsoft Word viewer (free) for reading the Microsoft documents, and I use abiword (very small and also free) for writing my own ones, in a way which is compatible with Microsoft word, even if the page layout seems different. So, I open my collegue document, view it, and I write my own document saying "on page 3 add the following line".
