Lot of questions, let's try to answer them. I will try a logical order, which is not the natural 1-2-3 order. Question 2 : I would startup with Mandrake, not with Suze ! Question 1 : Of course, this is my own opinion, but I'm not sure that Suze ist the best choice as first trial for a beginner. Of course, a lot of people have different opinions, so read some posts around here to see the different opinions. I think you should startup with Mandrake. Question 3 : Dual boot. If you have free space on your disks, Mandrake will install everything by itself, and make a dual-boot on your system. This means, when you power-on your PC, you will have the choice between Linux and Windows. moreover, you will be able to change the default (if you prefer Linux or Windows). Download the free distro from mandrake, burn the CD's (I hope you know how to burn a bootable CD with Nero if you have a bootable iso image). Then boot from the first CD. The install program will see if you have free space on your system (which means non-partitionned space). Unfortunately you have no free space. You will have to remove one of the partition, I suggest your F: partiton. Prior to that, of course, you have copied all your data from your F: disk to your E: disk ! You first ask Mandrake (or a Windows tool like Partition magic) to remove your F: partition. Then you will ask Mandrake to install Linux, standard install, on the free space left on your disk. Most of the default answers are OK, accept them for all the questions. Remember you may restart your install from scratch as many times as you want, everytime you think your install is not correct, you may restart it. Only when you will start writing down Linux programs, you will have to stop re-installing. Question 4 : Why Linux ? The questions is not why Linux instead of Microsoft Windows. The difference is between single-user systems and multi-user systems. Single-user system are now rather often Intel Pc's. Microsoft has a quasi-monopole on that field. You like or you don't like it, but such is life. If you buy a personal computer in a supermarket today, you will probably obtain it with windows. So you will not really chose Windows, you will get it automatically. On the other hand, multi-user systems (like the huge accounting or payroll printing machines) are nowadays mostly Unix systems. AIX on IBM unix systems, HP-UX on HP Unix systems, SUN-OS on Sun systems, etc... So, smart people have to learn how to speak Unix language. And, of course, Linux is a Unix operating system. Not so different from the other ones. And if you need to buy a professional system for profession use with a lot of users, most probably the cheapest solution is a Linux solution. So, learning Linux is a rich idea. And if you already have a PC with 18 gigs free, learning Linux on your own system costs nothing. Moreover, having installed it will help you understanding the bindings between hardware and software. This binding is the part which is ignored by pure Linux (or Unix) people because only at installation time it's important, but it could be useful for you to learn how it works. Hope this helped. OK, so, you need a free hosting for your polish site, on a web server having php and mysql. And you need this site to have a polish name, ending with plock.org, like http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ see only a single way to do that.Find somebody who will give you a free domain name (I heard that you can find one for 2 dollars, maybe if you ask a lot of people you will get two dollars). So, you wil have a polish domain, let's say it's named marcin.plock.org. Then, you ask Xisto to host your site, and your collegues will connect to marcin.plock.org/ and they will be hosted by Xisto without knowing it, and everybody will be satisfied.

Notice from Yordan: Not Debian for a beginner! If it's your first try, I would say don't use debian ! Debian is very interesting for security reasons, if you want to prevent people from accessing your computer whithout your permission. If you are a beginner, I would recommend Mandrake. The mandrake distributions are fully functionnal, and easy to install. Download the iso's from the Mandrake official site, burn them using Nero, boot on the first CD. Installation is even easier than installing Windows XP ! And you will have a fully functionnal system, including the KDE deskstop (really useful if you want to configure things) and you will have the Linux standard console, several versions if you want to taste the differences between ascii-like and X11-like consoles. You can download Mandriva 10, the free version of mandrake 10, here : http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ If you want a really stable version, maybe you would prefer Mandrake 9, the full version is still free and has everything included : the web server, the mysql database, etc... Hope this helped Yordan

Demo Cpanel Doesn't Work! FAQ details are incorrect.
yordan replied to saxsux's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I tried without and with being connected under my own login, same problem. it simply seems that the user named demo/demo disappeard from the account list.Maybe we should signal this fact to a moderator. By the way, isn't the "pleas signal this" button for that kind of usage ? -
It seems that the question was not concerning putting a larger hardrave inside the Xbox. As I understood that things, he wanted to take the big disk out the Xbox, put it on his PC, and put a smaller disk inside the Xbox. By the way, I'm sure you are right concerning the modchip, there is probably a checksum verifying that the disk is the original one before the game starts playing. and I'm sure that there are several other forums on other sites more specialized in X-box hardware, where you could find more help. I feel here on Xisto it's looks like a site with a lot of webmasters, a bunch of develelppers, an no hard-wired console players.

Which Distro Of Linux Is Best For A Windows User ?
yordan replied to TotalLamer's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Everytime I can, i install Mandrake, you are right, it's rather close to the usual way of windowing, and has a lot of assistants helping you if you are not familiar with Unix. Sometimes, for professional needs, I have to install RedHat enterprise Linux, it's less easy to use but still at an acceptable level of easyness. -
Welcome, Justin, Welcome, Just10, Welcome, Just-in-time (just10-M).Welcome aboard. You will see that this site is really impressive, a lot of simultaneous ftps, and have a walk arount cpanel. I found there my visit counter, my guest book and my private forum (like the present one but for my family's fun). I have problems with the gallery, but I should overcome the problem.and you, what are your interests in your life ? And do you know what you will do with your website ?

This probably means that your CD reader has problems reading CR-RW. Some old hardwares have problems reading CD-RW, or booting from CD-RW. You are right, the symptoms are that everyting is fine (but more costly) with CD-R.So, congrititulations, you solved everyghing by yourself. Have a good time with that perfect OS.

I installed Gallery with Fantastico. It installed well. But when trying uploading pictures, I had errors "Unable to make thumbnail(0)"On the "troubleshooting the gallery" website (http://codex.galleryproject.org/Main_Page ) I see that "This is a very common problem. It's usually because the image manipulation program isn't getting called correctly, and this can happen for a number of reasons. To diagnose the problem, follow these steps: Verify that the binaries (NetPBM or ImageMagick) are installed correctly and are chmodded 0755 (including the directory they are in). "Is ImageMagick installed on Xisto, and how to tell gallery (when installed with Fantastico) how to find the binaries ?Please help me with thatYordan

Just one question for people knowing this "power management setup" and other things in the bios. I need no know something, maybe you could help me.Sometimes, when I help a friend installing win2k pro, at shudown the PC (IBM Aptiva for instance) does not powerdown, it shows a screen saying "you may now safely powerdown your computer). And of course the front pannel "power" button makes a reboot. Is this normal ? Going in the bios (here it's F1 or F2) and saying "reset all to factory settings" gives no improvement.Generally, what is the trick to make the computer power down when sutting down with Microsoft Windows 2k pro or 2k server ?

I am not familiar with Borland C++, but it should not be very different from standard C language programming.when I needed scripting out from my c programs, i simply had to add a "system" in my C program and compile it.Read again your documentation about the "system" syntax, but as far as I remember it was something likesystem( dir) ;and this gave you the directory.Or system(c:/tmp/mytest.bat);Maybe it could be with quotes :system("c:\tmp\mytest.bat"); and don't forget the \ in ms-dos and / in Unix, but you are probably familiar with that.

What Think You Of Windows Xp-95-98-2000
yordan replied to gc472118's topic in Websites and Web Designing
When I buy a computer, I buy it with it's operating system. As it is a full guaranteed system, I go to customer service if something happens. And at customer service, during one year, they don't accept that I touch anything on the hardware nor on the software part, else the garantee is out and I have to pay the repairs. So, my first PC had ms-dos. The second one had Windows 95. The next one had Windows 98Second Edition. The next one had windows Millenium Edition. And the current one has Widonws XP. For each computer, I didn't touch anything during one year because of garantee. And after one year, I see that my system remains rather stable, I see no need to change it. And after three years, I can't play games any more on my computers becaus my graphic board is too old, because my processor is too slow, and I buy a new system, which comes with it's own OS. My last PC I paid it 900 dollars. And in the same shop I saw the same system (I mean same CPU, same memory, same disks) at 500 dollars. The reason why ? The cheap one was with Linux ! So, folks, it's coming. Microsoft starts loosing the war ! The new PC's in the supermarkets start coming with Linux as operating systems ! Linux is winning the war ! Linux forever !!Linux! Linux ! -
Hi, Ryan, could you please post here the link to AVG free edition ?I am looking for a correct free anti-virus software, in order to give it to my friends. I use Norton Antivirus at work, but all my friends have no money for buying an anti-virus software, so they sorf on the net without anti-virus and they have a lot of problems. So, I could give them a free anti-virus, it could help. I am satisfied with Mc Afee Scan 9, no problems till now. But I really would have access to a free anti-virus for people I help installing their computer, so they would be protected without giving a lot of money, and withour risking because of not having paid.

Questions About Formatting Harddisk Having questions and am worried
yordan replied to cyborgxxi's topic in Hardware Workshop
You do not really need a third party partitionning software. When I do a correct fresh install from scratch on a system, I only use windows, 2k or XP. You can do the same way.Choose "create a partition", choose a 10 giga or 20 giga partition for the system (I would say roughly 10% to 20% of the full disk), and install Windows on that partition. And then you use Windows to create the next patiton. No need of an external partitionning software. The additional partitionning soft is useful if you did a mistake at first install, or need to resize the initial partition. -
Notice from m^e: Yordan. DON'T use this NOTE tag. This is for use by mods and admins only - to put editing & warning notes on posts. Your comic strips are static. Once you wrote your history, you finished the work. So, you don't need a database. A database is useful if you want to remove an image or add one. For comic strips, you need to have the images on a directory, and create a webpage giving you all the images on the correct order, clicking on one of them to enlarge it. So, for each comic strip set, you need a software to create the site (I mean a directory with everything in it and an index.html first page). xnview is free and dos the job fast and easy. And for the next comic strip you have, you add a second directory on your site, and all the job you have to do is creating the very first page redirecting comic-strip one to directory strip1/index.html comic-strip two to directory strip2/index.html... etc.

Its Done! finished my website, or did I?
yordan replied to Logan Deathbringer's topic in General Discussion
Yo are partly right.I would say that, if your site is finished 90% you can call your beta-testers. If your looks 99.99% like what you wanted, you may say it's finished. And then you work twenty years acheaving 99.999%, but 99% of the visitors will see no difference. I found this site nice, I am still impressed, and say "Congratitulations, keep going". -
I liked your site Very nice, very impressive. The only thing I didn't like is the music. Maybe it's due to my Internet Explorer web browser, I didn't try it with Firefox. What I didn't like is that your site didn't appear first. The screen was freezed, until the music was able to startup. could it be possible to see the first screen, viewing the pictures and reading the text while the music is downloading ?

Fedora Core 4: A New User's First Impressions
yordan replied to QBRADQ's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I rate this review 8 over 10. I was interested to see that several people installed Fedora 4 without problems, some others had problems with unadequate drivers (probably disks, but maybe also graphic adapters are forgotten as source of crashes).maybe too many posts on serial modems, are serial modems so often used till now? -
Placing Gifs On Page Gif codeing
yordan replied to KnightEagle's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
You can simply grasp the file in Windows explorer and put it in the web page you are editing whith Microsoft FrontPage, you will see your image and you will be able to see the code, and modify it if you want. that's the way I put my images in my webpages when I don't use a smarter way. -
what's really the problem ? Does the_offbeat need help for iproving his computer behaviour ? Or does he simple want to express his hate of the need of posting ? I mean, does he really need to hear us, or does he simply want us to hear him ? I know, this starts being phylosophy or psychology, but such is life.

Flyer For My Band comments, criticism...
yordan replied to remy's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Everybody has the same opinion. So, I give mine, which is exactly the opposite. I like the picture, I like the fonts, an I don't care if the www thing is not really readable. I like the general feeling when looking at the image, I don't know the artists but I like the way their name is on the flyer.
