  1. I guess that if you are not a university, you cannot have a .edu domain name. Are you really the network admin of a recognized university ? Or do you want to create a fake website as if you were part of a university ?
  2. Hi, You probably did not pay attention to the first rule of our tutorial section as expressed here : http://forums.xisto.com/topic/6-forum/ Your topic is far below 500 words. That's why I moved it here, where is most probably it's place. Regards Yordan
  3. Hi, You first posted this topic in the "tutorial" section. Unfortunately, you forgot the first rule for our tutorials, see here : http://forums.xisto.com/topic/6-forum/ Your topic is far shorter than this 500 words threshold, that's why I moved it here.
  4. Nice info, OpaQue, thanks. Said simply, explained clearly. They even tell you if it's worth doing that depending from the expected number of customers you will have.
  5. Nice reference list.I would not state this being a tutorial, because you did not write this with your own words, that's why I moved your topic here. However, it's really a useful set of info, thanks a lot.Yordan
  6. There are already several topics on this subject, you could have a look at them first.Linux is open-source, that means that the sources are available. But each version of Linux is not free. For example you have to pay for RedHat server Linux, whereas there are free versions from the same version of Linux. The true way of choosing depends from what you want to do, which material you have and how much effort you want to give to it.My personnal choice is Mandriva, the free version of Mandrake Linux. Unfortunately the free versions detects correctly my wifi adapter, but says that the drivers are available only in the commercial version. Of course, standard Ethernet connection is available in the free version and works perfectly. Also, if you don't want to change too much from MS-Windows to Linux, I would also recommend Mandriva. And of course, as usual in the open-source playground, a lot of people will have a completely different opinion.RegardsYordan
  7. Maybe there is an alternative way to do that. How many domain names do you need to register each day ? Probably one per week, or less. So, if it's for your friends or for one of your customers, there is a simple way. Let's say you want to register the name brishisharma.net First of all you have a look to see if this name is available. Then, you pay the first year fees to any provider (Xisto can sell you domain names). And then you ask the money back to your friend or customer. A domain name is not so expensive, simple remember that you have to renew the subscription every year.
  8. The same question has been asked here : http://forums.xisto.com/topic/96125-topic/?findpost=1064394096 Maybe you could initialize a common action with Meigan ? Yordan
  9. If you don't like passwords, I would like to suggest you to use a very funny option in VNC.With vnc you can control if users have to give passwords or not. And you can allow some computers to connect, and refuse connections from some other ones. So, what I suggest is the following : deny connection from every computer. Then, allow connection from your own computer. And then allow your computer to connect without giving password.
  10. I see one funny way : put your script in a folder, and password-protect this folder. Use the cpanel option for that, and create a user and a password. Only this user will be able to run this script. The system will be able to run your cronjob task, but a guy who does not have the folder username and password will not.
  11. Hi, nunocordeiro, You probably noticed that I moved your topic off the tutorial section. Maybe you did not notice the first rule for writing tutorials, as expressed here : http://forums.xisto.com/topic/6-forum/ Now comes my question. Please tell us a little bit more. How does this solution compare to the other available solutions ? For instance I would like to know how it compares to Windows Terminal Server client, or to VNC.

    Hello

    Hi, Nohair, welcome aboard.
  13. I knew deviantart as being mostly graphics-oriented. Am I wrong ? Is there also a "pure text" department there ?
  14. I also had trouble with httrack, seems that some webmasters found a way for protecting themselves agains full site download. Maybe, for the site you want to downlaod, if you have a legit reason for doing that, you could ask the site owner to send you a backup copy of his site ?
  15. That's ritht. With Filezilla, you should not forget to first go to the www folder, which is the root for the hosted website.First go to www, then create a folder.
  16. I have to rename large sets of files because of one of my digital photo camera. On sophisticated cameras, the picture names are continuous, that means after picture12.jpg, the next one is renamed picture13.jpg.If you move all your files to disks, the directory is empty, but the next picture will be named picture14.jpgOn low-cost cameras, when the folder is empty, the first picture is named picture1.jpg.If you want to move it on the hard disk of your PC, the answer is "picture1.jpg already exists, do you want to replace it ?"And if you click "yes", you replace you girlfriend picture by your dog picture, which was not what you wanted. That's why we need a fast way for renaming all the files in a folder, before moving them to another disk or before sending them to somebody.
  17. I guess the correct way would be to close that very old topics. However, this has to be done by a moderator, and our mods here are rather busy with a lot of other things.
  18. Two different problems. 1) For activating your account, you started correctly, on Xisto.com/manage. Then, in the domain name, in the box after the http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. type khalilov.astahost.com (this will make that your site main page will be reached at the url http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) Of course if you prefer anothername.astahost.com, choose the other name. Simply type the name you gave when you filled the free hosting application form. Then, in the username field, type the administrator username. This will probably be khalilov, that's the name of the guy who will connect for administrating your site. Then enter your password. And that's all for the website creation. Then your cpanel will be the name you have chosen for your site, followed by /cpanel (for instance khalilov.astahost.com/cpanel) 2) For the second point, the standard way of earning credits is posting on the forum. Each time you post in Xisto forum, you earn credits. Sustaining your site will cost you one credit per day, and the credits you earn depends from what you are writing (is it a tutorial, is it written with correct English sentences, etc...). Of course, rich people could imagine give money in order to have hosting credits, but I don't find this interesting : if you have money, simply buy paid hosting plans at Xisto instead of free plans. That's probably the reason why you reach the "404 not found" page when you try to purchase credits, this system is not so used today, people around here prefer posting in the forum in order to get free credits. Hope this helped. Yordan
  19. Now it's approved. So, welcome aboard, and enjoy your hosting at Xisto. Yordan
  20. I'm slightly confused concerning this tutorial. I'm not completely sure that I should accept it. First of all, it's not completely compliant with the "Tutorial Specifications", mainly the first specification. Your post is far below this thereshold.Secondly, you should read very carefully our forum rules, see here : http://forums.xisto.com/topic/77393-welcome-to-xisto-open-discussion-free-web-hosting/ What you express here could be seen as a hacking method, because a lot of newbies could not guess how to perform this, although looking for the words "Office" in windows Registry could lead to the goal. So, please, next time, avoid posting such tutorials if you don't want them to be simply removed. And a last remark, avoid things like what you said : Only post tips you have found by your own experience. "This thing should work" is not enough, we could also imagine that 2007 could be more protected than 2003, and the registry keys you gave are not enough.Last but not least, you forgot giving the security advice : "do not forget to backup your registry before modifying it", some wrong click-delete could lead to a non-functional PC.
  21. You will probably be able to do it by yourself using the "cronjobs" menu in your Xisto control pannel. However, maybe you will have to tell us a little bit more, not all cron jobs are granted in the free hosting plans.
  22. Cisco is the name of a device (namely a manufacturer who sells networking devices like gateways, switches, and other things).Wireless is a way of interconnecting devices : with wires or without wires. For instance, inside your home, you ask an Internet provider to give you Internet access. You give this provider some money, and he gives you access to the world wide web, also named The Internet. In order to do that, he puts inside your home a physical device, which connects your home to the Internet network, through the telephone cables. This device changes the keystokes you type on your PC to signals that can be understood out of your house through the network device. The easiest way to connect your PC to this device is through an Ethernet cable. Ethernet is a protocol as well as an electrical cabling standard. This standard is implemented on each Microsoft computer, so it's the easiest way to interconnect your PC with this device, which is named a router. Putting a cable between your PC and the router is not always easy, especially if they are not in the same room and if your mother does not want you to put a big piece of cable between her office and your room. That's why wireless connections are interesting. This is a way of allowing your computer to communicate with the router, using radio waves. This is frequently named "wireless connection". So, Cisco is a company, wireless is a way of connecting. Wireless connection uses communication protocols, maybe you want to learn these protocols ? Cisco routers are the most expensive routers on the market, that's why big companies trust them so much, probably. Cisco routers use the different communication protocols (Ethernet, TCP/IP, for instance) and have their own programming languages. Maybe you are talking about learning how to program the Cisco switches and routers, in order to configure ports, configure Virtual Private Networks, configure firewalls, and so on ? You see, this field is very vast, and your words "cisco or wireless" are not sufficient, you should tell us a little bit more what you want exactly, and which price you want to pay for this (four years at school ? some minutes goggling ?) See you Yordan -------------- P.S. You probably noticed that I moved your topic and put it here, where is most probably it's place.
  23. Sorry, but here we accept only original articles. Xisto must be the first place where you post your tutorial. If you are the author, you cannot post your tutorial a second time as being an original one. You can only mention please read my paper at http://www.mmowned.com/forums/general-chatring-world.html this paper has been published on mmowned.com at 09-08-2007, you cannot publish it again at Xisto at 09-23-2008 saying it's a new topic. Even if have accounts on several forums you have to quote yourself when you post a text that has been already published somewhere else.
  24. Yes, it takes sometime long. But it's worth the waiting time.
