  1. Yeah I agree that as long as it stays at a reasonable temperature, that it should be ok. So, if you give it enough ventilation and it doesn't get clogged with dust, then it should continue to work.I don't know if it would really effect the lifespan as long as you take care of it. If it stays dry and cool and clean then there isn't much that is going to effect it's life span.
  2. Yes, a webmaster should make the page load as speedy as possible. And that is one reason why seeing little bits of the sits load (instead of waiting for one huge image), might keep those 56k people around during the load time. I think it is important to keep load time in mind during the design process and the slicing/coding process. For example, having text going across a large photo (in the design stage) would look weird if it was sliced across the text, but would yield a large image if it wasn't sliced.
  3. I have a LaCie external drive (160gb) and I am very happy with it. It is maybe 3 or 4 years old. It has a SUPER thick, strong, protective metal shell and stands upright to conserve space. It has a cool blue power light (the power button) and supports firewire and usb. The one possible downside is that it comes formatted for OS X so I had to format and partition the drive to FAT32 so that I could use it on mac and pc (I work between the two frequently). They make good products and they seem to last longer than many other external drives, because they are better protected. I have had other brand fail on me before and this one is still going strong after carrying it around town in my backpack all the time. this is the one that I have: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  4. Well in some instances using slices help, because different forms of imagery can be compressed separately in different ways for maximum compression. For instance, with flat, non-gradated colors, you could use GIFs optimized with pallets limited to only a few colors; whereas, with more photographic/rendered/gradated images a JPEG compression would be more fitting. So if you split the flat colored-shapes from the photos, then you would have a faster loads page then if you didn't slice. Also, some people use slices so that the viewers don't have to wait for one big image to load. When see little parts filling in and loading, they might be more likely to stick around and wait for the page to finish loading. It is the same idea as with interlaced/progressive images. They load in layers of quality so that the viewer can see that something is happening, even if they are a little larger in files size than the non-interlaced images.

  6. flashkit.com is a great site as well.
  7. Thanks. Yeah the domain is pointed to the hosting IP (unless the IP has changed). Maybe I will call them, but I will have to get the account number and pin and everything from the client.
  8. That actually sort of reminds me of the movie Pi when he finds ants in his computer. Well first maybe take it outside and spray out the dust (and maybe some roaches) with canned air.I suppose you could set one of those roach poison things down at the bottom of the tower. If you have any pets, that may not be a good idea. You may be able to just remove some of the parts and dump the roaches off.
  9. When I go to http://venicemediadistrict.org/ I am getting the following error message: Bad Request (Invalid Hostname) Does this mean that the hosting IP address has changed? Last summer I built a website for a non-profit organization. The hosting and domain accounts are owned by different people. I am awaiting an email with the login info for the hosting (I already have the domain info), so I can't investigate any further yet. I was just wondering if anyone has encountered this or knows what might be the cause of the problem. It is hosted on a Godaddy account.
  10. Did you check the processes tab in the task manager and look for any suspicious programs running in the background? That might give you some clues as to which virus it could be.
  11. I guess that that would depend on what you are recording. Some video editors are capable of increasing/decreasing the speed of the video, but depending on the video, this could make the video choppy. It is best to record at a high frame rate so that when you slow it down there is enough information to yield a smooth slow motion video. I use Adobe AfterEffects for time remapping and speed changes, but it can also be done on Premiere and Final Cut Pro. I don't know much about freeware video editors, but you might be able to find one that has that feature.Slow motion shots of very high-speed objects like a bullet hitting an apple, need to be shot with very high-speed cameras (probably expensive).
  12. The image is loading fine on my computer. Maybe if you clear your cache and then reload the page, it might work on your side.
  13. I was thinking the same thing as TavoxPeru. That command looks very similar to BASIC syntax. If you want to run Basic programs in windows, you might be able to do it with a DOS emulator like DosBox.Unless you have a really old version of Windows that is still based on DOS, I don't think that it will run natively.
  14. I don't own a PS2 but I believe that they play DVD movies. Am I correct on this (unless my friend's is just modded)? You could use a DVD authoring program to make a dvd with the music divided into chapters for songs or artists. There are some freeware dvd authoring programs out there to use. This might be more hassle than it is worth, though. What type of work are producing the offending sounds with your freelance work? Are they coming from a web browseror application? Maybe there is a way to block or suppress those sounds.
  15. Well I don't seem to remember any games like that, but maybe you might be able to search for it at Home of the Underdogs. The site has a huge database of old games. I have found many games there that I played as a kid. There is an education section on that site with even more specific categories.
  16. Someone said that jpeg compression is more efficient than gif, but this is not completely true. Gif images are great for flat color. You can optimize a gif image to let's say 8 colors and it may not look any different than the original and be smaller. I do agree that jpegs are much better for photos or images with gradients. Another thing that I have found to get png transparency to work in IE is if you set the image to be the background of a div or table, the transparency should work.It has worked for me when doing this in the past.
  17. That is correct. I totally forgot.
  18. Happy Pi Day everyone! Have a good one. My friends have a little tradition of going to a diner and eating pie on pi day and this year we have the biggest group of people going ever. I am excited! Here is a pi pie that my friend made a few years ago for pi day. 19. I think whats made older games so great was that they couldn't rely on graphics to sell the game. They HAD to have great game-play or people wouldn't play them. I find that many of todays games are boring because they try so hard to be realistic. I actually prefer the games that stray from realism.
  20. I use KDE on Kubuntu. I like it. Once I moved things around and customized things I felt very comfortable in it.
  21. Yeah I will play with it soon and I would be interested in seeing anyone else's results with it. The same old fonts really can get old after a while and it seems like it would definitely make things easier with fancy headers. This kind of technology really could bring a new look and more freedom to web design. I know it says that it is mainly for smaller blacks of text. Do you think the reason for that is that body type may take too long to render? I suppose that if this method is used, it would be best to use a typeface with similar proportions to that of a web-safe font so that if it does revert back to the web-safe font, their won't be any serious typographic changes that would mess with the layout. Edit: I found the answer to one of my questions: from http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  22. sIFR 2.0 an open source solution to rich typography for the web I plan on trying this soon and just wanted to see if anyone else has had any experience with it. It looks like it could really come in handy. I was going to try it out and experiment on a past job, but the coding of the website ended up being passed on to a web programmer. Apparently it uses a combination of flash, javascript and CSS to embed non web-safe fonts into a web page while still making it appear like a normal html page. What I mean is that the user should still be able to highlight and copy text etc. If the user does not have the flash plugin or has java disabled it will just revert to the CSS styles using a web-safe font. Go here to see sIFR in action: https://mikeindustries.com/blog/files/sifr/2.0/ (thanks .:Brian:.) You can read more about it at: https://mikeindustries.com/sifr and http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Here is a description from https://mikeindustries.com/sifr Here is some more info from http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  23. You can also use Resource Hacker to do the job. It let's you swap out many of the images used anywhere in windows. You can also use it to edit the CSS of the login screen. http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/
  24. Well I use Kubuntu (KDE version of Ubuntu) and all that I need to do is go to the system settings and somwhere in there you can install new fonts. I don't know if the Gnome version is set up in a similar way though. The Kubuntu distro seems to support Truetype and even Opentype!
  25. Very cool! A while back I stumbled on this: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Although it is still pricey, it is relatively inexpensive compared to the industrial prototype fabricators. It is good to see that they are getting closer to a product that could be used at home. I would be interested in seeing what people could do at home with these machines. I would love to be able to pop out action figure prototypes and other creative projects.
