  1. I do a wide range of design work in digital, print and web including websites, stationary (envelopes, letterhead, business cards), some motion graphics, logos/branding, brochures, posters, advertisements, packaging, signage, etc. I work alot in Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Flash, AfterEffects, Dreamweaver, Corel Painter, etc. I don't do much actual web programming. I can code websites, but I mainly stick to xhtml, css, javascript and a small amount of php. Normally a programmer will do the web applications. I do quite a bit of work for some design firms and they have their own freelance programmers to do that, who would get the job done much faster than I could (more cost effective). I would like to work on learning some more about web programming. I just need to set aside some time and read through w3schools or something. I went to art/design school (Otis College of Art & Design) where I received a 4 year BFA degree.
  2. mmMmmMMmm I haven't been to Jason's Deli in years. I don't know if they are even out here in CA. I freelance at home doing graphic design, motion graphics, web design, etc. I enjoy it, but sometimes I wish I could work around other people and it isn't easy handling all the accounting etc that goes along with running your own business. I think I might go for a job at a design firm or something soon. In the past I worked at Mattel, Inc and also another small toy company called Sport Fun doing design work.
  3. This is actually quite easy. Open a new canvas and design whatever pattern that you would like to repeat. You only have to design one of what is going to repeated, but if you want to repeat it that is ok too. When that is done, use one of the selection tools to select what will be repeated. For example if it is a square design, you would select with the rectangular selection tool. Once you have selected what you want the repeating design to be, then go to Edit > Define Pattern. Photoshop will prompt you to give it a name so name it whatever you want. That's it! Now to use/test it you can just make a selection and go to Edit > Fill and select pattern. Your design should be at the bottom of the list of patterns. I hope that helps you.
  4. I use firefox the most, but I do also use Opera. I just wish that Opera would give in and allow extensions. The current widgets just don't do anything for me.I use firefox extensions every day when working. They make me more productive and just speed up my work flow. I feel deprived in a browser without them. Opera has some great features, but without those extensions it can't be my number one browser. Opera has a nicer interface and I just sort of which that I could use it more often.
  5. It is a fun site. I got through quite a few of the challenges, but I haven't been on the site in about a year. Maybe I should try it out again since I am a little more proficient in unix commands now (still not very). I learned quite a bit from the site. Like others have said hacking isn't band. It is a neutral activity in of itself. Just because there are malicious hackers out there doesn't mean that they are all malicious.
  6. Worked fine for me, but my connection speed is around 6mbps.
  7. I don't know of any light-weight ones. If all you need to do is convert a normal image to an swf of the same dimensions you can post it here and I would be happy to convert it for you. It only takes a minute.
  8. I didn't start receiving ads until I accessed this forum in linux. I use firefox on both OS's.
  9. Yes, I find it to be very interesting and I definitely don't mean to discount the amazing creatures that we are.Nature and life itself are mind-bending.
  10. Like I already said, just because part of a species evolves, that doesn't mean that there wouldn't still be some left how they are. If humans evolved from monkeys, that doesn't mean that the rest of the monkeys are going to evolve into humanoids. The species branches off from the other and they both continue to exist.
  11. Well, we could be a branch off from the development of monkeys, in which case the monkeys would have evolved (humans being the product of evolved monkeys). Just because part of a species evolves doesn't mean that the rest of the species will. Time alone does not change a species. There needs to be an environmental factor driving the change. A species could stay the same for extended periods of time if it is fit for it's environment. This is why we still have roaches and lampreys which haven't evolved much at all within the past hundred(s) million years. They don't have to evolve because they have no problem surviving as they are. I would say that a possible reason for our intelligence and accomplishments is that we eventually stopped wandering and learned to farm and live in a localized area. Since humans spent less time searching for food and hunting, they might have had time to use their brains more for things less related to survival. It seems that there were more arts, crafts, and other non-survival related activities being created once people started settling in one place for extended periods of time. Some of these activities involve more abstract thinking.
  12. The only crisp bills I ever get are 20s from the ATM. I think that most banks would probably have some crisp ones.
  13. You are welcome to interpret it anyway that you like. They are supposed to be growing out, but I wanted there to be a sort of duality where the flowers still had the quality of squirting out as blood might, which is why they are sort od messy and the stems aren't even complete in certain places. Also the splattered paint sort of adds to that impression. I actually do not have any recent web pages of my own, which is a bit ironic since I have spent time on so many other ones and none were for me personally. I do stay busy with work, but I would really like to eventually put up a professional online portfolio for myself. I do have a blog type thing on my Stumbleupon account, but it is mainly just images of other people's work and links to their sites; Although Occasionally I do post some of my own work there. If you want you could also just do a link to my email foolakadugie@gmail.com.
  14. That is an interesting question. I never really thought about the logistic of building web pages with text going in thew opposite direction. I don't know if you have read this but I just found this link that seems to have some interesting suggestions regarding this subject: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  15. nice study. It is interesting to see it in vector. Adding the green color to the stems really sort of turns the heart into a vase whereas in mine the flowers/vines sort of seem to be spurting out form the heart as blood would. It really adds a different feel to the image. It would be interesting to do a sort of community art peice, where everyone sort of adds on to the same project and to see how it would evolve and change.
  16. I think Stumbleupon is doing something interesting by using their stumblers to help rate their sites. People enjoy using the plug-in and community and at the same time are contributing to their search engine.
  17. How do you know that other animals do not have emotions and feelings? Can you prove that? How exactly do you define a "soul"? There has to be extremes to any spectrum. Humans were not traveling to the moon and building cars and phones until very recently (relatively). Even humans were hunting and gathering nomads at one time. They probably started out using tools much like tools that monkeys have been found to use. Our technology builds upon other technology. We would have never gone to the moon until we discovered how to start fire. Even certain birds have been known to use tools. The human brain has become larger over the time that our species has survived. Who is to say that that couldn't happen to monkeys or any other species in another few million years?
  18. I am now connected to the internet in kubuntu. I would like to thank both of you for your help. It seems kubuntu has a weird bug in recognizing an internet connection. It will tell you that it is enabled when it is not. I unplugged the ethernet cable, rebooted, disabled the eth0, plugged the ethernet cable back in, then re-enabled eth0,
  19. It is possible that is is difficult to learn. It also seemed that much of the time he wasn't starting off with enough forward thrust. Weight could have something to do with it too.
  20. Well in windows under LAN properties it gives me an IP for the DHCP Server. Does this carry over to Linux? Oh and if it matters, I am not behind a router. I will boot into linux and if I can do what you suggested.
  21. I am new to linux and just installed Kubuntu. I have windows XP on my master primary hard drive and Kubuntu is installed on my slave drive. Everything seems to work great except that I cannot connect to the internet when I boot into Kubuntu (I also tried Ubuntu). I am thinking maybe it has something to do with ethernet adapter driver. I can connect just fine in windows, so I know that the actual hardware isn't messed up. Windows uses the driver for Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Ethernet NIC. I looked through google and help forum threads and it seems others have had this problem with similar adapters and many of them never came to a resolution and others got it working and were not quite sure what got it working. Kubuntu is supposed to install the hardware automatically and I really don't know how to install linux drivers. Does this sound like a driver issue? I would really like to get this resolved, because I really can't enjoy an OS without an internet connection. When I open the web browser and attempt a google search I get something like this: "An error occurred while loading https://www.google.com/search?q=linux&i8&oe=UTF-8: Unknown host https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=BwkjVKfAD8uH8QfckIGgCQ&gws_rd=ssl; I tried reinstalling kubuntu to see if that helped and then after booting back into linux I checked the system log and these were the only entries: 02/07/2007 02:32:33 PM computername anacron[4478] Job `cron.daily' terminated 02/07/2007 02:32:33 PM computername syslogd 1.4.1#18ubuntu6 restart. I tried opening network places and get this alert: error - konqueror The Zeroconf daemon (mdnsd) is not running I followed some steps from different posts in other forums and I don't really know if they apply to me or not but I will post the results I got to maybe assist in diagnosing the problem: I guess this is my kernel version uname -r 2.6.17-10-generic contents of /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp auto eth1 iface eth1 inet dhcp auto eth2 iface eth2 inet dhcp auto ath0 iface ath0 inet dhcp auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:4C:CD:D9:28 inet6 addr: fe80::2e0:4cff:fecd:d928/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:5519 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:23 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:388500 (379.3 KiB) TX bytes:6282 (6.1 KiB) Interrupt:209 Base address:0xe000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:112 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:112 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:8592 (8.3 KiB) TX bytes:8592 (8.3 KiB) sudo ifdown eth0 There is already a pid file /var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid with pid 4778 killed old client process, removed PID file Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.0.4 Copyright 2004-2006 Internet Systems Consortium. Any help would be very appreciated.
  22. I love this game. I have a book of really difficult ones. They sure pass the time on plain flights.
  23. thanks Just practice and maybe try looking at other art. Look at what you are drawing as the shapes that it is composed of rather than what it is. That always helped me. Well I was just thinking of symbols of love and growth, etc and just sort of fused them together.I think I had been awake for about 48 hours and sleep deprivation always seems to put me in a creative mode. If you only plan on doing it for your own personal enjoyment/practice/learning, then go right ahead, but if you plan on posting/displaying it somewhere, would it be ok to give me some credit for the concept? Maybe just mention that it was based on an illustration/concept of mine (My name is Randy Hutchins). If you do, I would really like to see what you could do to make it your own work/interpretation. See what you can do to bring in your own composition, personality and style to it (because that is what art is all about, right? ).
