  1. Thanks. I have thought about whether I should have put more detail in the flowers and I haven't completely made a decision on it yet. I suppose I could always add it in digitally. The heart does look kind of separate from the flowers I guess due to the difference in detail. Their are a few reasons why I did do it how I did though. First, I wanted it to have a sort of messy splattery quality like the paint and was hesitant in making it too busy with the splatters and details. The other reason was that it was a last minute project that I made ON valentines day and was in sort of a rush. I like combining different styles together and using mixed media/materials so the difference in styles is sort of part of my aesthetic tastes thanks for the comments and critiques!
  2. With valentines day approaching, I decided to post this. It is an illustration I made for a valentine last year. Although most of it was done by hand there was some compositing that I did in photoshop. The splattered paint splotches behind the flowers were painted on a separate paper and were then composited into the illustration. The only other thing I did digitally was change the background color to that creamy off-white shade instead of the broght white paper that it was made on. The illustration was done on two sheets of paper that were taped together, because it was a quick afternoon project that I made on a whim and had no other larger paper to do it on at the time. I decided to keep the overlapping paper edge and tape because I liked them
  3. Another great illustration! I like the angular style and you did a nice job with the lighting on the guys body. I really love the gradient in the sky. Great contrast and use of figure-ground. The only thing that I find a little odd is the brown shape above the fire. Is that smoke or tepees in the background? i think it is a little ambiguous.
  4. Yes, as Vyoma mentioned, it is a little hard to give you ideas without knowing what specifically this team does. A logo should communicate something about the organization that it represents, so it is important to think about what this team does.
  5. I would say that they are "incredibly underground". I would say that they are quite well-known in the electronic/metal community and they have quite a large cult-like following. That is not to say that their music is mainstream though, because as you specified, they are very unique and tend to fuse genres together. They are a great band.
  6. I have used it and it does work, but there seem to be some bugs. When you log in to your gmail account normally the files show up as attachments on emails. I don't use it anymore since there are other better ways of transferring files and it's not like i need extra storage space.
  7. Yeah the only free one that I know of is the Stuffit expander for windows. That is what I use. I have to use it quite often and it works fine.Brian, yes I would suggest that you use zip for anything you you are offering on your site to the public, since that is the most cross-compatible. I don't really think that there is much difference in the compression either between the two.
  8. I also use opera sometimes; however, there are many thing I do prefer in firefox. I have to say that Opera does much better interface design and the built-in torrent client is also nice. Many things that opera does can be achieved with extensions in firefox. I use firefox more because there are many extensions that I use for my work all the time and I am very accustomed to the key commands in FF.
  9. When I made this thread I was having some other problems that I didn't quite realize at the time. The other day I solved it. My downloads.rdf file was corrupt and even a reinstall wouldn't fix it. It was causing all kinds of problems, but it is all fixed now and alt + click works again.WOO YAY!
  10. Photo manipulation is generally just a term to describe altering a photograph. Usually this is done in applications like Photoshop or GIMP or other photo editors. I suppose it could ALSO mean manipulating the photos in the developing/printing process in the darkroom but for the most part manipulation these days is much more common on the computer. If you link to the image I might be able to give you some ideas on how they might have done what they did, but without a example, I can't really tell you the process.
  11. When searching for a solution I found a site about the alt click being a security issue, since javascript could potentially save a file to a users hard drive without any prompt, so maybe that is why it was removed. As far as the https issue goes, have you tried going to Tools > Clear Private Data (ctrl + shift + del) before using the secured site? I personally haven't had any problems with https sites so far.
  12. In previous versions of Firefox there was a feature that I used very often. When a link was clicked while holding the alt key, it would automatically download the linked file to my hard disk. It seems that this hasn't worked since installing the the newest release. Is this feature still available, maybe with a different key command? Maybe one of my extensions is causing a bug. Does it work for anyone else? If not does anyone know of an extension/about:config edit/hack that could restore this functionality? I always found it to be very intuitive and helpful. Ctrl + click (open link in new tab) still works, so I am confused as to why alt + click doesn't. I know that I can still use the right click context menu to do the same but this can be cumbersome, especially if you are downloading a whole list of links. Also, the alt + click command would skip the open with/save to disk/etc prompts and just download it to my default directory (desktop).
  13. Maybe you need to reinstall the drivers for you soundcard. Normally if you go to the website of the company who made your soundcard they will have a section to download the latest drivers.
  14. I suppose it might be approached similarly to the process of making a physical art book. I think it might also depend on who is being featured and wether all the artists agree to the same term or if the copyrights/royalties/etc need to be dealt with on an individual basis. Some lesser known artists may just like the exposure and not require compensation. I suppose people would buy it if the art interested them. People buy other ebooks, so I don't see why they wouldn't buy an e-artbook, as long as they KNOW about it and see some samples or listing of the art/artists included. I receive a free subscription to a PDF magazine regarding design and video production, etc (Creative Cow). Sometimes they also mail me a physical magazine too. I think they make their money, or at least break even, with their advertising. The magazine hasn't been around for long, but the website has been quite established for a long time. Even so, the magazine seems to be getting a decent number of readers.
  15. What specific font are you trying to use? Does that particular font have those characters included? You can always check in the character map in windows (in the acessories folder of the start menu) or the keycaps (under utilities I think) on a mac.
  16. Well, in a sense there are many online galleries that could be described as a sort of digital art book. Are you thinking of one that actually has turning pages and such? There are some flash sites out there doing that and I think even some free tutorials about building them. I am guessing though that you are maybe trying to figure out other forms in which this digital art book could manifest itself in the online world.
  17. I actually stumbled over a website about a week ago explaining the process of making your own synth drum like that, but I don't remember the address.
  18. I know that the newest version of itunes has been crashing alot for me, but only since the recent update. I already had las.fm installed though so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Did you also recently update to the latest itunes? Actually now that I think about it I went a long time without itunes until just recently. I don't normally use it, except for syncing my mp3 player.
  19. Yeah, the more wraps around the stronger it should be. Try wrapping them tight and neatly and as you wrap the wire push the loops down against each other, so that the metal doesn't show in between. In order to get a good result you are going to need to do quite a few wraps around and the the higher the voltage you use the better is should be. As a kid, my friends and I would make them with car batteries and u-shaped metal pieces. 4 grown men couldn't pull them apart (unless they twisted them off each other).
  20. Agreed 100% rambling or not, it is the truth
  21. Sure, we may create our own purpose and motivations in life, but it is up to the individual to determine what that is. There are many people who dedicate their lives to different purposes, but we as a species don't seem to be predisposed to having any particular purpose other than basic living, eating, breeding etc. That is not to say that other animals don't do anything but eat and breed. There are other animals that play and do things that don't directly pertain to their survival.

  23. I am glad you like it! Just remember that is all your art (just a quick tweak on my part )! Just think about colors opposite each other on the color wheel. I used a blue with a little green in it and for the wings a brown with some orange/red hues. Orange red compliments blue green because they are 180 degrees from each other on the color wheel. Color really can make a big difference. Recently I designed a few different variations for a website design. I felt so stuck after 3 different designs and I really hated one of them. I ended up taking my least favorite and giving it completely different colors and it just instantly transformed into something that worked. The client ended up choosing that design. It amazed me that when I took that boring ugly design and gave it some new colors it just immediately WORKED. If you want to learn more about color you could research triad and tetrad color harmonies. For some quick color inspiration the following site can help with making some neat color combinations: http://colorblender.com/
  24. Very nice! Good clean illustration. As for color scheme I think it could be tweaked a little too. I think a more muted blue would be easier on the eyes. The sky right now seems to be a little over powering. Maybe a color scheme like this?
