I've already had some fun time destroying old hardware Last time I toyed around a bit w/ and old DX4 mobo , you'll be surprised how tough the stuff is, you don't break it in 1, 2, 3 .Other than that, I already smashed some CD-player and some old PC cases (sometimes when you get angry, it's fun to have some stuff you can destroy ).My next victim is prolly going to be a dead (I hope so ) SCSI HDD.

I wouldn't excpect much upgrade posibilities. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Products/?app=manuals The fastest CPU seem to be an Intel PIII 600MHz (not much of an upgrade I'd say ). Just accept it, you don't get a free pc every day, and if you can't do a thing w/ it, just sell it afterwards ($50-$150 if you're lucky). I have a PII400 pc, it's enough to run win98 and win2k (though win2K is very limited in speed because of the very slow hard disk drive and the small amount of memory (=96Mb)).

Nice, I've discovered filelodge a while ago and it's okay too (500Mb storage, 50Mb/file max, hotlinking and no bandwith limit) . If I didn't have a filelodge account before, I'd really registered @ filefrontBut like all other 'unlimited bandwiths', there's probably a small catch, when you cause too much traffic, your file will be removed/disabled.

Yeah, but you have to be careful, because there is oil that conducts. You have to make sure that the oil doesn't contain water (quite logic, but most people prolly don't think about it). The biggest problem is that you'll have to run your hdd out of the oil box, that'll cause the pc not to be completely silent. You could seal the hdd in a bag or something, would be pretty cool. Only thing I realy doubt about it the PSU. Is it submergable too or does is have too high currents flowing through it or maybe to higj frequencies???

As far as I know, PCI slots are completely backward compatible. I never had problems puttting new cards on old motherboards and vice versa, so I wouldn't worry too much about it .

There's also another keyboard that I like. It's an old Compaq keyboard, with integrated metal plate, I can assure you, it's pretty heavy for a keyboard, but it does feel strong.Only one problem . One day, I got so mad at the computer it was attached to, that I hit the keyboard w/ the screwdriver I was holding in my hands, result, I broke the return key .And the keyboard I hate most is an arowana keyboard, it's flimsy, you can bend it and the keys feel horrible . Brrr, getting chills from the keyboard.And not to forget, el cheapo mic, man, you can do funny things w/ it (except hearing yourself singing, that just terrible here , I think even wors than some guys (or gals) at popidol )

I've had the same problem a while ago, tough all 3 services were running, M$ updates still complainded that they were not running . The problem was that automatic updates (maybe BITS too, but I can't realy remember) was set to manualy. Set those 3 services (BITS, automatic updates and system event log) to start automaticly. This should probably do it.

the LGA775 is the most futureproof socket intel has (not taking their freaking chipchangingpolicy in account ).Best thing is to get a motherboard that has a PCIe slot, so you could upgrade later to a newer (better) card.hint, hint, amd, hint, hint (I just couldn't resist )

I've had the same error a long time ago when I used Mercury (it's a Java based messenger). It helped when I updated to the newest driver, but sometimes it would still give the error, only after a format it resolved the problem What you might try is to uninstall your current ATI driver and then run this: https://www.drivercleaner.net/ This litlle program will remove any leftovers from older drivers. Then just install the latest ATI drivers. Btw, when does this happen? When you play games or just while browsing. Maybe it's just your card that's overheating???

it might have to do something with the transfer from a PII setup to a PIII setup.This might be succesfull, few days ago I transfer a hdd w/ win98 from a K6-II to a PII and back and back to the PII and it still works perfect.I suggest you to do this; back-up your data like you wanted to do and reinstall windows

it's an old trick, but if when your cpu is running that hot, try touching the heatsink.If it's realy hot, than there is something wrong with the heatsink (not capable, bad airflow, ...)If it's on the cold/warmer side, then there could be a bad contact between the heatsink base and the IHSoryou need a BIOS update because the current one is completely wrong.

I have a simple wired Logitech optical mouse and a wireless desktop deluxe keyboard (also logitech).Altough the keyboard already suffered some smashes, it still works good (many thanks to the superglue ). Even nicer fact is that this keyboard is like 4-5 years old and it still uses the same batteries !!!!! I just want a simple mouse, not those mices where your thumb is a bit embedded in the mouse, no, just a simple, plain mouse.

You can also get there by right clicking on my computer and then choose 'manage'.And then under storage (?) you can use the diskmanagement.Works pretty good, I've been using this for a long time (pretty handy if you have a PATA>SATA convertor, hotplugging old PATA disks )

I prefer Suse, it doesn't only look better because it uses KDE (standard) instead of GNOME.Plus, every RedHat I've tried was pretty slow, even FedoraC3 ran very slow . Suse on the other hand runs pretty smooth on my oldie PIII733.Ow, and Suse is (as stated in another topic), more for l33t users (as me )

well, I've tried ubuntu, but erm, I didn't work at all, it gave errors on all my computers (and no, there's nothing wrong with the cd).I think I'll stay with Suse9.3PE, it wors great for my, everything works so I'm happy (but I must say that it isn't more stable than windows (I've already had 1 severe crash and amaroK (I know, it's not a part of the os as-is) keeps crashing and sometimes I get artifacts in the bootscreen (no overheat since it's a matrox millenium card)

if you have 80 wire cables, I'd use them (imho, they look better ), but 40wires is fast enough (they are supposed the transfer up to 66Mbs, no dvd toy can get that fast ).One thing I want to clear up, SATA aren't faster than PATA drives, that's just some marketing-brainwash slogan. It's quite normal that a new SATA drive is faster than an 'older' PATA drive, that's just how it goes.SATA is useless for it's speed, since no hdd can go faster than 70Mb/s (that's a lot slower than the 300Mbs offered by SATA2), the only pros are NQC(SATA2 only btw), slimmer cables, cheap RAID and hotpluggable (it realy works, I do that all the time )

If you don't have the HDD yet, I'd suggest you to use the SATA ports on you motherboard (it probably have 2 or 4 ports at least since it's a new pc).One SATA can support 1 HDD. If you don't have enough SATA cards, you could also buy a SATA RAID PCI card (of even USB->SATA convertor, but that's going to be slow).P.s. about the ribbons, there are 2 kinds of them, an 80 and 40 wire. The 80 is for PATA100/133 (for you HDD mainly). It's the ribbons with the finer cables.The 40wire is for slower PATA standards, so it's perfect for a DVD.

Well, I have a simple onboard SoundStorm SPU, an Ozaki 5.1 surrounds set that has a lot of noise on the front speaker, and yes, I'm happy about it Nice buy tough, hope you'll enjoy (I guess your neigbours will enjoy it too )

Those stumps are the crsuh pads of your cpu, they are there to help support the heatsink and to prevent the heatsink from crushing the core (don't realy too much on them tough , you always must be careful).I'd say, remove the plastic and see if there is a thermal pad on it, if not, you should use the thermal goop.

I've just installed Suse9.3 again on my other computer. I realy start to like it more and more .I've also had Redhat and Mandrake before, I liked Mandrake more than Redhat (but that's mainly because I prefer KDE above GNOME).I'm also going to try uBuntu, it's already downloaded, just need to burn it on a cd and install it, downside of uBuntu is GNOME.I know switching between GNOME and KDE is possible, but I choose the most supported X-system.

Lol, we even have a 5,25" hdd, but it' already offers a few gb of data. Now, I do remember having an old 286 pc, the hdd is dead. I think it's also a 5,25" model (might be different, it's not even an ATA/IDE hdd) and has only few Mb space . Aah good old times (never been there tough), 8Mhz computer power
