  1. Okay, first of all you're completely wrong about a lot of points. 1) The "private profiles" you're talking about are actually Google profiles, it's a thing that already exists for quite a while and has nothing to do with Google+ (in fact, it's not because you use Google services that you need a profile, so if you don't want your Google Profile in public, just delete it (if possible).2) Facebook officially doesn't support pseudonames or nicknames either, it's impossible to create a profile with some weird character in it, or multiple capitals in one word. What Google is deleting right now are company profiles because Google is developing special Google+ profiles for companies3) Wrong: completely wrong, there will be an option to get excluded from the search results which is in fact much better than what Facebook offers right now (on Facebook you can only exclude yourself from the facebook search, but not from Google search). However, don't be fooled, your **** is all over the internet and other search engines are like the flies that are attracted to this ****: you can't be erased from the internet, you can't hide yourself, you can only do your best to protect your privacy.4) I don't realy see the problem here, if you're already using Blogger and Picasa, then you want people to read an see your 'creations', why not share it a bit more with your relatives ? If you're using Blogger and Picasa then you're already using Google services so I don't see the problem with it being integrated in Google+ (no matter what, you can still hide it from certain circles, but as said in 3, you can't hide yourself). If you're not happy with the integration, you can use Wordpress, Microsoft Live Writer, Flickr, ... as alternative5) You're kidding me, Google offers a lot of money if someone detects a weak point and besides, if it gets as popular as Facebook then they'll have to get their security walls up. Orkut is for Google just another failed project and it's no surprise they don't support it that well anymore (it's not correct, but nobody notices it because nobody uses Orkut anyway). So ... I'm sorry to say, but your 5 reason are worthless, you should investigate a bit more before copying rumours from the internet. The only valid reason I can think of right now is that it's yet another Google service and that they are already controling your life too much and have too much information about you and no mather what, you don't want it to get worse than it already is.//edit: and yes, in case you're wondering, that's why I don't want a Google+ profile nor a Facebook profile, let's keep things cluttered over the internet and give the flies some work instead of serving them **** on a plate.
  2. One and a half year later The computer for my master thesis now has become my game pc The multi purpose server is still up and running A have a new computer, an Athlon XP 1800 with openSuse on it, I switch between this and my game pc from time to time My Dell laptop is catching a lot of dust lately The SVN server laptop is down, it's still were I left is but I don't need it anymore The RDS server laptop is also were I left it The 0,5 computer is also were I left it, just like all the other junk My mother her pc is the same, my father now has a Macbook besides it's two pcs, mac and netbook. The old pcs to be repaired are repaired and my sister left the house. But, I got a laptop from work which is catching a lot of dust lately (I have a desktop at work which is like ... 100x faster). So the grand total is: 14 @Yordan: his desktop is probably just older than his laptop, I mean, my Pentium III and Ahtlon XP1800 desktops are a lot slower than the i5 laptop I got from work (maybe even with the full disk encryption)
  3. Hey Asta guys (and girls). Just found a tiny bug in the astahosts forum. Nothing special, but when you click the "overal top 20 posters", you get the "today's top 20 posters".
  4. Funny you say, some Mozilla guy lately said he hated Thunderbird because it's the most ugly client ever . I only use webmail now, I have too many computers to have email clients installed on them, it's just too annoying to setup, configure, manage, etc ... and it uses useless resources which I like to dedicate to other stuff like gaming (plus, it's snailmail, people just have to wait for me to check my mail).
  5. I have used Mint for a while and I must say that it works pretty well, I was even surprised that it's actualy quite popular (it you look at distrowatch). Then I switched back to Windows for a while (I have several computers, so Mint was installed on another one) and forgot about Mint.Lately I wanted to revive the old machine and decided to test some linux distributions, one of them being the latests Ubuntu. I must say I was disappointed like hell. It was the worst linux experience I ever had, it was impossible to install a decent nVidia driver (v96) on Ubuntu, instead it kept pushing the crappy nouveau drivers.Anyway, I installed openSuse now and I'm happilly using linux again
  6. Guys, the topic dates from 2004, why was it revived ? Btw, Notepad++ does a great job tough Dreamwaver's FTP synchronization is quite handy too (and it's site manager and stuff) and it works in text-only mode too.
  7. First things first: don't let the nerve get infected. Once it does it starts to hurt, in the beginning it's not much, but once you've reached a certain point you'd wish you'd die instead of coping with the pain. I've been there and the dentist had a hard time anestesizing the teeth before pulling out the completely rotten nerve (btw, a bad filling was the cause of the infection). So, if I were you, I'd get a part time job and go to a dentist. The price to safe yourself from the horrible pain of an infected nerve is definately worth it (ps, don't think that dafalgan or aspirine is going to help, even 2,5mg of paracetamol doesn't help).
  8. What is the best car, what is the best restaurant, what is the best grocery store ... it's personal and a pretty useless discussion. It's even more useless because the many different operating systems that are around also differ a lot on what is called 'normal use'.
  9. It's true and I dont' understing why Mozilla is pusing a minor release as a major release even Google surprses me that they managed to get from v5 to v12 in only a year or so. The problem however with Firefox is that a major release causes addons to fail, only because they've changed a 4 into a 5, they should have looked at Microsoft better. When they release Windows 7, they did not change the version number of the kernel from 6 to 7, instead they kept it at 6 because many applications were doing incorrect compatibility checks (like, if kernel.version != 6 then fail()); Anyway, I'm staying with Opera, at least a major release is a major release (same goes for Internet Explorer btw).
  10. I'm sorry to say, but I think you're completely wrong here. Microsoft did not create MSE in order to track user with invalid licenses, that's completely *BLEEP*. MSE was created because Microsoft realised that even nowadays many users do not have an antivirus soltion and that is the reason why so many (Windows) computers get infected. MSE, is a completely free, relatively simple to use and even lightweight anti-virus solution. If it is not available to users without a valid license of Microsoft windows, then you might consider that MSE is something that is included in Windows when you BUY Windows, it's a free extra you get. I'm very sorry for those users who are using illegal, cracked and hacked version of Windows, but I don't think they have the right to have MSE installed on their computers. Then you're comparing MSE to MalwareBytes anti-malware and AVG. You do know you're comparing apples with lemons here. MSE is an anti-malware tool. It detects not only viruses, but it also detects critical malware applications (those which spread fast and are dangerous). Malwarebytes anti-malware is NOT an anti-virus tool, it's an anti-malware tool, it does not detect virusses, it does not offer on-access protection for free. Last but not least, AVG is a monster of an application, it's like a colemine factory compared to MSE, but it's purpose is the same as MSE, so comparing MSE and AVG might be correct. Last but not least, I totaly don't understand your gibberish about AVG and Avast getting into malware, that's like telling the police is robbing jewerly stores.... it makes no sense. Please explain yourself here a bit more (with proof please)
  11. Does it have to be in VBA ? I once worked with a tool called Pentaho Kettle/Spoon. It's an open source ETL tool which let you build a complete chain of actions using blocks (it's like programming, but with blocks). Now, don't be mistaken, it sounds easy, but there are some tricks you have to know in order to get it working (eg, if you want to group data, you have to apply a sort on the columns you'll use for sorting). I'm sure it can read excel files, I'm 65% sure you can rename files with it, so it sounds like a good solution to your problem. However, I don't realy see the use of renaming word files based on an Excel sheet rather than giving it a name based on the file its content. //edit: btw, Pentaho is writen in Java so it'll run on most operating systems
  12. Great guide, but I'd like to add a few limitations to it:1) this will not work when the administrator has blocked the Your Freedom servers on an IP level (or when they simply blocked the DNS name)2) this also won't work when you're behind a corporate firewall which blocks (unknown) VPN connections3) if you're not allowed to bypass the proxy then you shouldn't use this guide. If you're allowed to bypass the proxy then you don't need this guide .
  13. If yordan's answer isn't helping, could define "my computer identify that the hard drive is there, it just doesn't let me access it" more clearely ? This could actually mean a lot of things:1) during startup you see the computer recognises the disk, but it doesnt' show up in windows2) windows recognized the disk (showed a yellow balloon that it's installing drivers and stuff), but it doesn't show up in windows3) windows recognized the disk, it's visible in explorer, but you can't open the disk4) same as 3, but you can open only certain folders on the disk (what yordan said)5) windows recognized the disk, you can open it, but it appears to be emptyand for each of the options there are probably a dozen of reasons why
  14. If I had to choose one of the two you suggest I would definately go for Fedora since it's roots are Red Hat which is a good server operating system. Ubuntu's roots are debian, which is also a very good linux distribution, but the goal of Canonical was the make an easy as possible desktop operating system which inevitably makes it less suited as a server. However, if you're not familiar with linux then maybe Ubuntu isn't a bad option. If you're more experienced I'd suggest you to install Debian on it, configure SSH and make it a headless server
  15. okay, this is actually a very handy tool, it's at least more easy than having to write down the STOP code or looking it up in the log files. It's also a handy tool to show your system administrator that there is something wrong with your laptop and that it's BSOD'ing twice a day .
  16. In fact, there are a few more causes for slow downloads. To begin with, you neve know where the file comes from, but it's obvious that downloading a file from a server 100km away is going to be way faster than when it comes from the other side of the world. You have to realise that between you and a server, there are many different devices (switches, backbones, other servers, ...) which allow you to connect to all the servers. These devices do have their limitations and mainly a limited bandwith will slow you down (if the device can transfer 1Gbps and 1000 users are downloading through this device, any use will get only 1Mbps).Now, the further away a file is, the more devices it has to pass and the more risk there is that a device is limiting your connection speed (the weakest link in the chain). Another limitation is more local, since nowadays, this the worst part of the connection: old coper cable. It's not a problem to transfer large amounts of data over a coper cable (a high quality twister pair cable can transfer a few Gbps, but only over 10-100meter. Over 4km, this speed drops because the signal weakens a lot due to the resistance and impedance of the coper cable. These are all limitations which are impossible to overcome with a simple software solution, the only way to get things faster is by hardware replacements. It's sad that companies are promising things which are impossible. They should clearely state that download accelerators only work when the connection speed is limited softwarematically (thus software vs software).
  17. The tar format is a compression-less format , the only reason it exists is for storing multiple files into a single file because some compression formats (.gz2/.bz) don't support compressing multiple files). Ow, and I just checked wikipedia, apparently it was designed for storing files onto tape devices, so it's pretty old school .
  18. Okay, just a bit of internet theory:Let us assume you're host A and the server you're downloading from is host B. B is in a datacenter and has a nice fiber-optic connection with a maximum throuhgput of 1Gbps. You on the other hand are limited to 10Mbps since you're using a simple ADSL over copper connection.1) Host B doesn't restrict your speed: you'll be able to use you're complete (available) throuhgput of 10Mbps and there's no way of getting it any faster, Download Accelerators won't help in this case.2) Host B limits the bandwith per user (let's say: 1Mbps): in this case, a download accelerator which creates 10 connections will help you to use your maximum bandwith.3) Host B limits the bandwith per IP (let's say: 1Mbps and this is how many file hosters do it nowadays): in this case, you can try to create as many connections as you want, you won't get over that speed limit of 1Mbps.4) Other situation: host B is reaching it's capacity and there's only 1Mbps left for you (setting up more connections is more or less impossible): in this case it might be handy to use a download accelerator IF you know a mirror site which you can use to setup multiple connections. However, be aware that it's not that easy to find mirrors (except for large, opensource stuff like linux distributions for which there's probably also a P2P download available). So, in short: there's only one case (1) where it's fruitfull to use a download accelerator to speed up things, in 2 cases (1 and 3) it's completely useless and in one case (3) it might be usefull if you have extra mirrors (btw, if you have a good mirror, you might as well download it directly from the mirror which will put you right back into case 1).For the handy stuff like pauzing downloads (which must be supported by the server, a limitation which is also required for speeding up the download by setting up multiple connections) you're better off with an application which was designed for doing just that, they have a smaller footprint, are more easy to use and there're are probably more free alternatives because afaik, DAP is full of crappy ads).Just my 2c about my experiences with download accelerators (which I don't use anymore because they suck).

    7zip

infotornix: just a small notice: there are strickt anti-spam rules here on the forum. I'm not saying you're spamming, but it seems like you've created a lot of small topics where you've just said 'I like this program: download it now'. It would be appreciated by many people if you'd just start a single post where you list all your favorite applications with a little bit of an explanation why it is so great (btw, there are already a lot of topics where you can just reply).

    Driverbackup

If I get it right, you first checked if the driver cd was still working before formatting your disk ? You're a genious . I usually find that out after formatting the complete disk.I do want to warn you that this is a great application if you don't switch from Windows version, but it will fail miserably if you're upgrading.
  21. There was probably a fuzz about it because you said it was free . The poll nor the topic started mentioned it should be a free app you like. Anyway, I definately prefer 7-zip. Sometimes it does compress even beter than Winrar and for handling zip files it's so much better than the windows implementation (it's so much faster for handling zip with +1000 small files) and the application is absolutely lightweight. It even gets better because it's free and there is no annoying popup box telling you to buy it (like Winzip or Winrar) which in the end is a pain in the *bottom* and a serious waste of time. The only downside of 7z is the lack of support for it's format... (zip still rules the windows/mac world, rar is probably second and in the linux world it's probably .gz and .bz2 which rule the compression world). I did try peazip before, it's not spectacular enough to keep. Zipzinus, never heard of it before.
  22. You're kidding, Fireworks is like the most crappy photo editing software I've every used before. Plus you can't compare the Gimp with Fireworks since it's not fair comparison. The GIMP is a (free) Photoshop alternative, trying to offer the most interesting things from Photoshop, but at no cost. Fireworks is more like the basic image editing program of which there are 13 in a dozen (and it's a crappy one too). Besides that, I do like the GIMP for doing some more 'advanced' stuff like playing with layers, brushes, effects, ... but it's definately not suited for doing simple 1...2...3... edit because it does take a while to start the application. For that there are much better applications with a much smaller footprint (like for example, Paint.Net, which also offers layer and some nice filters, is a lot faster, but imho isn't as handy to work with because I'm not used to it ).
  23. I noticed that a few people are using the wrong terminology here. A water powered car would be like a CO2 powered card, you're referring to the resulting component. Running a car on water would be kinda stupid because the energy you need to transform 2H2O into 4H + O2 is equal to the energy you get when 4H + O2 forms 2H2O (pure theoretically in an ideal world, with losses and barriers, it'll be more efficient to just use batteries). Anyway, using hydrogen to power cars is all nice and well, but it's just not ready for the masses. Don't forget they use hydrogen for bombs. It's realy, realy tricky to make this system safe, it'll take another few years of research to make the storage of hydrogen safe to withstand an accident. Anyway, the stories of the oil maffia is nice, but have you ever heard of the Shell Eco-marathon ? Doesn't realy sound like oil-guzzling-maffia-stuff.
  24. Btw, the Dell download site doesn't work to well outside Internet Explorer, so it might be a good idea to use IE
  25. If you leave out Vista I could say that I totaly agree . Tough sometimes I'm still happy to use XP because it's actually quite simple compared to 7 and thus less prone to errors (and of course, 10 years of bugfixing did help in that process).
