I've been using Opera since version 6 ! It's an awesome browser and afaik, upgrading Opera doesn't pose any problems . It's packed with nice features and that doesn't seem to slow it down at all (ow, and I'm addicted to Opera mouse gestures !)I'm not a fan of Firefox tough, without plugins, it's a worthless browser because it isn't really fast or it doesn't have nice features, but as soon as you start adding plugins, your either stuck to a certain version or FF becomes slower and start crashing a lot. Chrome is good too, it's as fast as it's light (untill you start adding plugins ), but I don't like Google controlling everything I have . I try to avoid IE. I only use it at work to check my mail (Lotus) or visit the company websites, other than that, it just sits there because it's slow and leaky as hell. Then for Safari, well, lets just say that it should stick with MacOS because on Windows it just isn't as great as on Mac.//edit: ow, I'd also like to mention that I do use Opera Mini/Opera Mobile on my iPaq, Mio and Nokia 5130 .

okay man. Just a suggestion, google something like PHP tutorial . Install WAMP (webserver with PHP support and mysql database) and start coding

hey, why did you post this in security and exploits ? A bit more comment on why you prefer mozilla thunderbird would be nice I do not realy use an email client, I prefer webmail (gmail and live mail). I used Outlook, it's a great client, but it's not free . Thunderbird isn't bad, tough I don't like it for some reason. I do use Opera M2 for my only non-webmail adres, it's basic and I don't realy care that it's so simple because I hardly use that address .

Hey, I'd suggest to put the config file in quotes as it's a copy-paste (which is against the rules ).

Which Is The Cool Desktop? KDE Or Gnome?
wutske replied to arunkumarhg's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Being a ligthweight desktop environment, it's customization possibilities are of course limited and out of the box it's ugly, but it's indeed true that you can make it look better. -
Are There Any Sites Blocked In Your Country?
wutske replied to 16888's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Nope, not many sites are blocked in Belgium ... not only because we respect freedom of speech, but also because our government (which we don't have btw ) is a bit out-of-date . The only sites which are probably blocked in Belgium are those related to illegal activities (mostly childporn because it's easy to block, other sites are harder to get down because it's not always obvious if it's illegal or not). -
Which Is The Cool Desktop? KDE Or Gnome?
wutske replied to arunkumarhg's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I used to prefer Gnome because it was less kiddy looking than KDE. I liked the professional looks of it, tough lately I've switched to KDE and I just can't imaging anymore why I liked Gnome. KDE looks just way better and more up to date than Gnome, which is a bit old-fashioned imho. Now, of course, this is only based on looks. Functionallity wise, both desktop environments are okay, no real reason why not to choose one.Speed wise I guess Gnome is a bit better because it lacks the 'unneeded' extra fancy stuff (tough it just can't win from XCFE or Blackbox, which are bloody ugly but extremely lightweight). -
Actually, there will be many improvements when using a wired connection: First of all, no matter what, wireless connection have worse response times (ping) than wired networks. For gaming, a lower ping is always better because there's nothing as annoying as lagging in an fps. Second, you're now running an unsecured wireless network, this BAD, seriously ! Everybody now can freely abuse your wireless network. Even tough it's totaly insecure, consider using a WEP encryption, this makes a just a tad more difficult for everyday users to use your internet connection. Additionally, configure the MAC filter on your router. Tirth, it's funny, but 90% doesn't realy mean 90% of G-speed. In fact, when the signal gets weaker, the card automatically lowers the connection speed, sometimes down to 1Mbps and still show a relatively high signal quality. For example, I had to share my network connection from the second floor using a normal WiFi usb stick and 2 levels lower, my laptop had 3 blocks (signal quality in Windows ) ... but only at 1-2Mbps.

Euhm, you won't even notice the difference between the slowest Core Solo and the fastest Core i7 Quadcore in that situation. You don't need a lot of fast cores for doing ... nothing. To put it simple: Single core: great for office stuff Dual core: great for gaming and maybe some photoshop Quad core: great for video editing, rendering and some photoshop functions Six core and plus: great for video editing and rendering, only if the software is optimized for the number of cores

Fitting Pci-e X16 Card In A Pci-e X8 Slot Is it possible or worth doing?
wutske replied to Qrntz's topic in Hardware Workshop
Hmm, I wouldn't suggest you doing that. It requires some very fine soldering and the lines should be the right length since you'll be sending high frequency signals over the lines and an incorrect line length can result in a huge impedance, lowering the signal level. -
Are you kidding ? ClamAV is the worst I've ever tried . No offence, but ClamAV lacks the resources to have an up to date virus database and decent scanning engine. Personally, I prefer Avast Home edition. Imho it's the best free av solution available. First of all, it doesn't have annoying ads like Avira has and it's a lot faster than AVG. It may not have the best scanning engine, but it's fast, has a nice up to date gui and since I'm not using a lot of high risk applications or visit risky site it perfectly suits my needs. MSSE isn't bad either, it's faster than Avast but performs a bit worse in detection rates. I'm not considering buying or paying for a commercial av-solution as the free versions do exactly the same (especially not McAfee, man, it sucks bigtime).

Fitting Pci-e X16 Card In A Pci-e X8 Slot Is it possible or worth doing?
wutske replied to Qrntz's topic in Hardware Workshop
woops, you're indeed right -
Well, it's not 100% free =p . If you reload for âŹ15, you get 2Gb of free internet for 1 month on your phone. It's not free, but it's next to nothing . The ownly downside is that it's a virtual operator which uses the network of Base/KPN which is a bit older (almost full coverage with EDGE, but 3G coverage is very low). But EDGE works fine for checking mail and suring using Opera Mini (using Opera Turbo)

Fitting Pci-e X16 Card In A Pci-e X8 Slot Is it possible or worth doing?
wutske replied to Qrntz's topic in Hardware Workshop
It will work, tough it's not guaranteed. The amount of slow down depends on the card you'll use in the 8x slot, tough I doubt that even the fastest cards are using the 16x bandwidth completely (just for the record, some 16x slots are only provided with the amount of lanes for an 8x slot, especially older motherboards with a jumper for enabling crossfire). I wouldn't spend money on an extender, if your card is a bit bigger then you might have problems fitting it in the case. //edit: about not using the extender, you'll have to mess up your motherboard's warranty with a soldering iron http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/249291-30-card Also worth mentioning is that less lanes = less power, so you'll probably need a GPU with and extra power connector. -
What Are The Factors On Which The Speed Of A Computer Depends?
wutske replied to Ahsaniqbalkmc's topic in Software
Okay, seriously, there's a lot of crap in this thread . RAM The amount of RAM you have must be adapted to your needs. If you have sufficient RAM in your pc, it won't become faster because you add more. If you have less than needed, your computer will become slower because it has to swap more often. Softwares and applications There's a truth in this, however, most computer nowadays are fast enough that you won't even notice that there are a lot of background programs running, tough it can slow down your computer if it's a bit older. Processor 1) Okay, first of all, the highest clock in consumer CPU's is above 8Ghz . 2) your 12 core Mac is fast because it's a SERVER. It has disks running at 15.000rpm and forgive me to say, your MacBook Pro beat that server in single-core benches. You guys are totally missing the point when it comes to multi-core cpu's. They are slower in single-core applications because they usually run at a lower frequency than they single-core counterparts (that's why Intel introduced it's Turbo Boost to it's multi-core processors). 3) You're also forgetting the underlying architecture and the tasks it's going to do. A GPU for example has a few hundred, rather slow and simple processors, but they're completely optimized to handle multi-threading and stuff like that and that's what makes them much faster than the more complex CPU's which are sold nowadays. Accessory Hardware Well, that just depends on the device you use and the applications it installs (and launches a boot time), for example an HP multifunctional, it installs a lot of crap which launches a boot-time, which you don't even need at all. External temperature That's very personal imho. I've never had a CPU throttling before here in Belgium. It's btw not the outside temperature that matters, it's the inside temperature that matters . An Intel cooler for example is specified to keep your CPU at temperature as long as the temperature inside the computer is 38°C or lower (which wasn't true for the hot prescotts ). And just to add my 2c: you've forgotten to mention: - the GPU (not only for gaming, also for HD playback) - the HDD (there's a big difference between SSD and HDD) - technology and up to date-ness (12Gb of EDO-ram isn't exactly going to give you a fast pc) -
Yes I do . We have free mobile internet in Belgium and I'm using it a lot, especialy on places where I have to wait or where I don't have my laptop with me. I usually check my mail on my phone, send tweets and stuff. Internet everywhere rocks, except that it's a bit slow and is power hungry

How To Put Front Image On Background CSS
wutske replied to imjjss's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Or, if you want to make your site compatible with older browsers there are two options:1) you merge the four images into a single image. The it's easy to have 1 HTML components to have single background image. This is probably the most fool (read: IE6) proof method.2) You might obtain the same effect using floating div's with a different Z/depth-value (so you have 4 div's with the background image and the same Z-value and another div with a different Z-value. This however is far from fool proof and might cause some cross-browser incompatibilities. -
How To Retrieved Permanently Erased Data On Hdd?
wutske replied to animecluster's topic in Hardware Workshop
1) DON'T USE YOUR COMPUTER ! The data is still there but there's just nothing referring to it and it's still recoverable. If it gets overwritten then it's lost (ps. this is only true for magnetic disks, if you have an SSD then you're screwed as soon as the trimming process is started). 2) There are plenty tools available on the internet, a simple one to use is http://www.piriform.com/recuva (ps. don't install it on your pc, you'll probably overwrite the important file ). I think it has a portable mode for installing it on a usb disk or something, just try it on another pc . -
Google Adsense Alternatives A collection of Adsense alternatives
wutske replied to imjjss's topic in Online Advertising
Well, before spending time (and money) while looking for alternatives for adsense, you must consider whether it's profitable to use and whether you're willing to show advertisements to your visitors. If you think you'll only gain a few dollars per months, then I guess it's better to not show ads. Also, not every visit to your site will be profitable because most popular browser have a nice ad-blocking plug-in (Firefox, opera, Internet Explorer). Ps. a quick google/yahoo/bing would have given you a nice list of google adsense alternatives which pay you using Paypal . -
Different Display In Firefox And Internet Explorer
wutske replied to Ahsaniqbalkmc's topic in Programming
I usually do not use the position/left/right/top/bottom elements of css, instead I fool around with margins and paddings . Now, I did notice one thing which might cause the problem: "auto". As already said, IE and FF (and other browsers) use different rendering engines, but also different default values and different algorithms for the value auto. You must understand that there are a lot of different properties which define the size of an object in html: padding (space between the objects border and the objects inside) defined dimensions (width/height) border-size margin (space around the object which is always empty and defines the actual size of the object) So, my suggestion is to set the dimensions to a fixed value and the margin and the padding to 0px (only when dealing with visual elements (including the title of your website), if you're working with blocks of text (content of your site), it's advised to have a padding and/or margin set) -
Actually, that is not so hard to do if you don't have a website yet. What you need is a CMS (Content Management System) like Joomla, e107, Drupal or Wordpress. A little explanation: what you see on David's blog is rather straightforward to do: ---------------------------------------- {header}---------------------------------------- {links}---------------------------------------- | | {content} | {right_menu} | ---------------------------------------- What you see between the code tags is some kind of pseude code for the page layout, usually defined in a php page. The lines represent the actual layout, made with div's or a table of something. The {tags} tell the CMS what is supposed to be placed inside those divs/cells. The {content} tag is probably most important as the CMS will put all your blogposts (usually called newsitems in a CMS) there. The Bio, photos, videos pages from David's blog are either static pages (just pure html) or plugins which are available for the CMS. Hope this explains a little bit about creating such a site. Just remember, you'll need to know something about html, php and css because if you want to make a site with a custom layout and a custom theme (tough there are many themes/templates which you can download and use, how you put the content in the theme is completely up to you as it's usually pretty straightforward to do with a CMS).

You think ? It has no resemblance at all . The disk is magnetic (instead of plastic and grooved), the head is hovering over the surface (there's no needle touching the disk), the data on the disk is binary (instead of analog data) and most of all, the stack of disks is rotating at something between 4300rpm and 15000rpm (whereas record players only reached 66rpm (?) ) .
