  1. To be honest, if you don't know what your doing then don't do it. Overclocking is a lot more complex then just changing a few settings, a computer is complex machine and a lot of devices and busses are connected to eachother and they all depend on eachother. If yoo change one thing, than you also change a lot of other things. If things get unstable it's not always easy to find out what the problem is if you don't know what you are doing ...
  2. uTorrent can only share files if1) you have downloaded these files using a torrent2) you create a torrent for those files and you share this torrent.btw, p2p clients like limewire, azureus, ... can only share the files that you allow them to share. As long as you don't share folders with copyright protected material, nothing is wrong.
  3. Yet again, people think that torrent files are made for sharing illegal stuff. In the first place, torrents were made to share large (legal) files over the internet without having a large webserver with some overexpensive fiber optic connection. Sharing illegal software using torrents is just one of the unwanted applications of torrents. If you don't believe me, most linux distributions are available via torrents, so is openOffice, CDBurnerXP Pro, America's Army, some VMWare Images, ...
  4. Toghether with a friend of mine we have tried this cd and while it offers a huge amount of tools, it still need a lot of improvements. The first problem we've encountered was the fact that it was very unstable. Another problem was that it was very hard to use all those tools, backtrack is nothing more than a livecd filled with command line applications. I know CLI apps are more powerfull than the GUIs, but even a simple GUI could make hacking a nicer experience .ps. we are no real hackers, we only wanted to get WEPkey from another wireless network at school so we could access internet without the limits that our network admin has implemented (very limited set of open ports and only 20kbps download speed).
  5. A version of Ubuntu is the best to begin with because it. There are three flavour:Ubuntu: runs GnomeKubuntu: runs KDEXUbuntu; runs XCFESo now you are probably wondering what Gnome, KDE and XFCE are? These 'programs' are the desktop environments, they define the look and feel of linux and also offer you a set of applications (some applications only work on KDE while others only work on Gnome), tools, utilities, games, ... XFCE is a special one because it's a lightweight desktop environment, it's bit harder to begin with, but very usefull if your laptop is on the slow side.Installing a ubuntu version is very easy. You download the ISO file, burn it on a cd, boot your laptop from it and when Ubuntu has started, you simply click the 'install ubuntu' icon on the desktop and the installation wizard starts. Pretty straightforward .
  6. Linux is an OS, so you don't need an OS on your laptop. If you just want to try out linux then it's best to use a LiveCD, this way you can boot linux from a CD without installing it on your hdd (and without altering anything on your hdd). If you don't like it, then you simply throw away the liveCD and you can continue using windows without wasting time. If you like windows, you can usualy can install it from the liveCD, but that's another story .
  7. I realy like the second graphic, it's cool . The first one looks a bit blurred to me and the other two are a bit hard to read without focussing on it (you can't see what's written there at the blink of an eye)
  8. There is a quick way to find out if there is someting wrong with the DNS(-settings). If you can't access a website by entering it's name (eg. http://forums.xisto.com/) then you should try to connect to it using it's public IP adres (for Xisto that is 216.240.134.213/ ). You can find such adresses by ping'ing to the webserver (ping http://forums.xisto.com/).yahoo.com: 87.248.113.14 msn.com: 65.54.152.126 Note that sometimes these adresses aren't fixed (like your own public IP adress), so it's a good idea to recheck it before you test it. ps. if there is a problem with the DNS, then the ping command won't return an adress if it hasn't been cached by the DNS server.
  9. The disappointment is probably mainly due to the fact that many features and ideas that were once announced have found their way to the little recycle bin that is found on most desktops . I do not believe he sees Vista as an unfinished product, it would be absolutely stupid to say something like that, it's more likely that he thinks Vista doesn't have all the features it should be and that they are still working on getting the features in Vista. As a matter in fact, every program is a work in progress, if you build and release an application then you very likely keep working on the application to maintain, fix and further improve it.
  10. errm, we can't just tell you what to do because PS is a huge application with a huge amount of features and tools. The best way is to get a good photoshop for beginners book to learn the basics, then find some kind of photoshop magazine that tells you step by step how some photos are made (in Belgium that is Advanced Photoshop magazine if I'm not mistaking) and if that's not enough you could try to reproduce pictures (but that's hard if you don't know every filter and the outcome of those filters)
  11. Design Rating : 7/10 - Designwise, I give it a 7. It like the sleek, black look, especialy compared to the ugly blue Luna theme, but there are a few features I do not like about the Aero theme like the green stuff (lock-screen, the image on the left in explorer, ...) and the bulky-ness of the Aero interface (resources and inefficient use of desktop space, the Win2K look is slimmer).System Rating : 7/10 - System wise I give it a 7, it does a great job at multitasking and if you tweak it a lot then memory usage isn't much of a problem either. Software support (especialy games and not-the-latests-versions of more advanced programs like Solidworks, Xilinx Platform Studio and even Microsoft's own VirtualPC) is still a bit of a problem, altough for more daily applications the support is great. Driver wise it is still somewhat behind (eg. I can't find drivers on the nV website for my Mobile 7300). Speedwise there's still a lot to do when it comes to responsiveness and filesystem actions are also a bit on the slow side. Stability has improved a lot, but I still get BSsOD when I resume from hibernation or standby, but explorer crashes or BSsOD while working are very minimal.New Features : 4/10 - There are some new features in Vista like superfetch, readyboost, diagnostic services, sidebar, improved security rules, better firewall, windows defender, ... but (and a big but) those features are far from revolutionary nor worked out well enough to be special (to be honest, the only that I use from the features I just mentioned is the windows firewall because it does a great job at limiting access when using public networks).Overall Rating : 8,5/10 - Overall, I give it an 8,5/10, that is more than the average of my scores, but that's because I don't use Vista how it comes by default. Once you have configured Vista the way you like and by tweaking the settings a bit you actualy get a very good OS. It looses some point because you first have to spend a lot of time changing things, some annoying/useless features can't be disabled and performance is sometimes a bit behind XP.
  12. I too don't think that linux will ever become the more dominant OS, at least not the first 25 years . Microsoft has a huge marketshare and for most people, windows is already hard enough to work with. The windows-just-click-with-your-mouse way of working is the most easy way of working, linux still won't work without using the command line and that's too complex for most users. The linux user base will probably keep growing, but not in such way that it'll get bigger as the windows user base. Also, don't forget most computer systems you buy in the shops come with windows pre-installed, linux doesn't stand a chance against this marketing trick.
  13. That's a fact, but they don't have charts for every piece of harware (like fan controllers, cases, sata controllers, ...).
  14. I wouldn't use a tweaking tool, mostly because the tweaks don't offer any improvement and sometimes even downgrade performance. A few tips: Disable the windows themes, go for the lightweight win2k look Disable unused services Uninstall unsed programs Update the drivers and maybe even flash the BIOS (altough finding a newer BIOS for an older laptop will be difficult). If it doesn't have enough RAM, see if you can add an extra module Hopes this helps
  15. Some terms have multiple definitions, like ISO. While it's not a computer-only term, ISO also stands for Internation Organization for Standarization, it's an organizations that creates, tests and maintains standards that are used in a lot of devices and tools.Beta: an early release of program for beta-testers who can look for errors and problems that have to be fixed before the final release of a program.
  16. Joomla is a web application, this means that you'll need a webserver that can process the files. If you want to host it on your own pc, then you can install xammp, this will install a webserver, php support and a database (all are needed to run joomla). Then some more steps are required to make it available to the outside (like opening a port, linking your public ip to a domain name).
  17. I'm a true Opera fan . I've been using this browser for a few years (I even used it when it still had advertisements in it) and I'm very happy about it. I've never like the plug-in system that firefox uses, plugins never offer the same level of stability and speed as a built-in functionality. Opera also supports most websites and I honestly can't remember a website that didn't work like it supposed to do. I aslo use most functions Opera offer, mails, rss and sometimes I use a widget for quickly translating texts or doing some measurements .
  18. Now you mention it, if it's a default windows dll-file, then you can copy it from the disc, but you'll have to use to command prompt for this. For example, if btsendto.dll is missing, then you have to enter the following rule: expand d:\i386\btsendto.dl_ c:\windows\system32\btsendto.dllif d: is your cd-rom drive that contains the xp installation cd
  19. which ones are missing ? Googleing for these dll's usualy brings you to a website where you can download them. Also, check out this dll library to make sure that missing dll's aren't virus/malware related: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/dlllibrary/
  20. First of all, don't confugse the database with the language; MySQL is a freely available database application that you can access using the Structured Query Language (SQL). Working with SQL-databases can be very easy, it goes from: select * from booksto select count(*) AS 'aantal', author.name, publisher.name from books inner join author on author.ID = book.authorID, inner join publisher on publisher.ID = books.publisherID group by author.name, publisher.name where books.publisherID = (select publishers.ID from publishers where publishers.name = 'Van In') having count(*) >= 10and more complex stuff that I don't know (yet) . But in fact it's rather easy, just install a database application, learn how to create tables, fill them with data and try some codes, everytime a bit more complex, one step at a time .
  21. Joomla is indeed a very good content mananagement system, I've already helped creating two websites (and templates) using Joomla and I'm very happy with it, at least it's a lot less complex as drupal and more relaxed (I couldn't find the right word, but I just mean that you can use joomla for websites that don't look so boring and serious like a company's website) than postnuke.
  22. That's true, but not completely. At the Leuven University they do use Linux (Kubuntu), but at the Antwerp Hogeschool, we still use WindowsXP as main OS (altough we folowed linux courses during one semester and we still have to use linux during the networking courses). The main problem is that some of the applications at school don't work on linux (like Matchad, Multisim, Visual Studio, ...) and that setting up an active directory for both windows and linux is too much of a hassle...
  23. Also, make sure you don't install 4 double sided memory modules, 9 chances out of 10 that it won't work.
  24. Dual channel or not, different banks or not, all your memory modules have to run at the same speed because DDR-SDRAM is a synchronous system (Double Data Rate - Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory). What you could try is to overclock the 667s to 800, tough I doubt it'll reach 800mhz without adding a lot of voltage to your memory. The best thing is to get the 800s and run them at 667, the difference in speed is hardly noticable.
