  1. It's true that it messes things up, but this way new CSS properties are introduced. A lot of things we can do with CSS nowadays were probably not possible if nobody added new properties to their browsers. Also, nobody forces you to use this browser-specific properties, simply follow the CSS guidelines and use properties that every browser understands and everything should be okay. The only problem you might have is that some browsers interpret properties in a different way ... then you have to create a small script that loads those properties differently for that browser. It sucks, but there's nothing we can do about it
  2. Nice script, but I think there are thousands of other programs that do the same (and I personaly prefer to remove these folders manualy, IF I remove them ).
  3. I don't want to spoil the fun, but that virtual keyboard is already very old (maybe 6-8 years), but it's still cool . I personly wouldn't want to have it, if I type I want to have a good feedback from the keys (I want to feel it that I pushed a button and I also want to hear it), that's why I don't like the keyboard on a MacBook, they are too soft and hardly responsive.

    3d And Php

PHP is a server-side language so if you want to change something via php then the whole page has to be re-rendered by the server. What you need is a client-side language like Javascript. With Javascript you can have the html code altered on the fly. However, you're creating a text-based game so you'll probably be using a database to store the data and I guess you're doing that everytime a player attacks or makes a move, not ? So basicaly it's easier to reload a page with the animation you want (correct me if I'm wrong ).
  5. I'd go for Avira Antivir, it's free and it works realy great.I use to have a link to a pdf with a very detailed report on how effective the different anti-virus products are, but I can't find it anymore .
  6. Strange, I've used regular expressions in notepad++ before and it does work. Quickly write a simple html page in Notepad++ : <html> <head> <title>Hello dude</title> </head> <body> <h1>This is a very rudimentary webpage</h1> <p>Some custom content</p> </body></html> And use the following regular expression to find all html tags (without attributes that is). <[A-Za-z][A-Za-z0-9]*>
  7. Like it , maybe a bit too high to use on forums, but that's personal flavor .
  8. How often you use it depends on what you usualy do . I personally think that knowing how to use regular expressions is a good thing, they can realy save a lot of time when you are looking for something (eg. when searching a mysql database). Some programs (like Notepad++) allow you to use regular expressions when searching something in a file, very handy
  9. I see using linux as a challenge, it's not as easy as windows but when you spend some time with it, it realy works well. I've been using openSuse 11 on my laptop for a few months now and I realy like it (it had Vista on it). It just feels more responsive most of the time, but I wouldn't say that it's faster everytime. Stability isn't as perfect as most people say, gnome sometimes completely hangs so I have to kill it (ctrl-alt-return), but at least it only has to restart gnome instead of completely rebooting (okay, I can't go to standby after gnome crashing ).You also don't have to miss all the great applications you use on windows, wine is a great emulator and if that doesn't work you can still use Virtualbox OSE. Virtualbox is something like Vmware of virtualpc, but has a great seamless mode that hides the guest's windows desktop and makes it click-through so you have your virtualised applications on your linux desktop as if they where running in linux (instead virtualised in windows).
  10. of course it will run slower. It's as in real life:Someone (a user) asks you (the server) to get a purple shirt (data) out of your closet (database). The words he sais when asking you and the purple shirt is what is being sent over the internet, nothing big actualy. Between the asking and returning the shirt, you go to your closet, open it, search between all your shirts, eventualy find the purple shirt and take the purple shirt, that is actualy what a database does, these are very basic tasks and usualy don't require a lot of time, you'll hardly notice that the site is slower (except if the database is realy huge, a lot of users are using the database and the script is poorly designed). Don't be afraid to loose a few miliseconds, you won't notice it.For your second question you might consider using cron jobs if your server is running linux.
  11. I actualy use nothing but freeware , especialy since I've switched to linux, but here is a short listImaging:The GIMP (image editing)Fastone MaxView (image viewing)RawTherapee (raw conversion)MusicBanshee (linux) or windows media player (windows, duh!)Audacity (basic editing)dbpoweramp (converting)MP3Tag (tagging)Office/text/...openOfficeNotepad++SecuritySygate Personal Firewall / commodo personal firewall pro 3Spybot S&DInternetOpera 9.5Mercury MessengerFilezilla... and there are a lot of other program
  12. I started programming using C++, nothing but object oriented command line stuff. It's actualy the best to start making programs without a GUI because you can focus on the basis of programming. I'd also suggest that if you learn a programmling language, to choose one that is object oriented because most common used languages are (you'll also find most information about these languages). If you like some challenge, try Java, I realy like the language, it's not that simple to learn, but very advanced and you can also use it to create programs for your mobile phone . Another language I suggest is C#, I've seen friends creating nice programs with it .
  13. Indeed, preventing access with ntfs permissions is more secure than a batch script with a password that everybody can read. I used to have a nifty tool that locked folders by chmodding the folder and hding the security tab in the folder properties, very simple, but it did work .
  14. If I have to choose between Norton and McAfee, then I'd definately go for McAffee, Norton still slows down your system too much and it's just too big.If I can choose another one, I'd go for Avast, been using it for a long time and I'm happy about it .
  15. Can you please supply us with some more information please ? Like the output you get from the terminal when you enter this command. Also, next time would you please use a more descriptive title instead of 'what's wrong?"
  16. It looks good, but the GUI looks so unstructured and messy . I've quit looking for a freeware PIM for a while now, Outlook seemed to offer the best (and most complete) compatiblity with my PDA so I decided to stick with it. Using Freemycall I can export my calendar to iCalendar format and then import it in Evolution on my laptop ... it's not the nicest solution, but it works
  17. I don't trust this either. I realy don't see any reason why they would pay you to use a search engine, where is the advantage for homepagefriends ? I don't think Yahoo is going to pay them parts of their advertisments income because they refer people to yahoo .I also don't thinks it's worth the hassle, just to earn a few dollars ... it's hardly enough to buy beer
  18. 15% is a lot, when did they tell you this ? Afaik, nowadays the dead pixel warranties are less strict
  19. For absolute beginners I'd also recommend Ubuntu, lots and lots of noobishly explained info available on the net, altough I do prefer openSuse 11.0 because it feels more mature and advanced compared to the kiddy Ubuntu distro.
  20. The only one I know is Apocalyptica and I like their songs . So I'm realy going to check out the other bands. Thanks for the info
  21. You mean like rebuilding Vista like you rebuild a linux kernel ? You can forget that, Vista is absolutely not open-source thus recreating and recompiling it is impossible. About the OEMs, they do modify Vista buy branding it (This Computer>Properties, there you'll see the manufacturer's logo), pre-installing the drivers and integrating other software. Btw. you can customize Vista in many ways, stripping it with vLite, changing the feeling (themes, sounds, mouse cursor and other completely useless stuff), installing some nifty programs like quick launchers ...
  22. Looks like the red and green component of that pixel is dead. Unfortunately, you probably won't be able to get a new screen for that single damaged pixel (most manufactures claim they offer you a new screen, but you'll need dead and or stuck pixels before they do that).
  23. They are not paying AMD for a proprietary graphics engine. AMD Crossfire capability means you can insert two AMD graphics cards and couple them so them works together, it's the same thing as nVidia's SLI technology. It would be kinda stupid if Intel wouldn't support Crosffire or SLI on their high end chipsets because these two technologies are what the market wants.
  24. What do you mean by 'creating a vista' ? Do you mean customizing a Vista installation like OEMs do ? Microsoft supplies tools for doing this and vlite is great for stripping and creating unattended installs of vista.
