Photoshop Tutorial: Bloody Text
wutske replied to soleimanian's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
The blood effect is a bit far fetched, the idea however is very nice, I managed to create this one for my blog: -image dead- -
Making Xubuntu Look Like Windows Vista
wutske replied to dserban's topic in Websites and Web Designing
omg, that's awsome , I didn't know xfce was that powerfull, I always tought it couldn't do more than a win98 look-a-like . Anyway, I'm not going to try it, I have vista installed and almost immediatly disabled the aero interface because the looks don't add any value to the functionality. -
The best way to tweak windows is to do it yourself, I've messed up several windows installations using some stupid tweaking tools. Just look around for some windows registry tweaks, it's more complex but you have more control and you know what you change and how to easily revert it. Defragging once in 2 months should help improving performance a bit (prior to defragging you could also run ccleaner to delete useless files).

okay, that's just plain stupid . If they would have gone to a professional tatooist he would have had enough with the image of a gun.I honestly wouldn't want to have a gun-looking tatoo on my body only to let people think I'm carrying a gun, that's just sad. I'd rather take a nice looking dragon or something like that on my arms or something, that's cool

The Best Free Alternatives To Nero Cd/dvd Burner
wutske replied to dserban's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I used to use nero a looooong time ago, I can't say it was a spectacular program, it just did what it had to do, burning cd's and dvd's. I must admit I've never payed for it (I started with the version that came with my dvd-burner, but when it got outdated I got myself a cracked version ) and I'm glad I didn't because I don't think it was worth it. Nowadays I use CDBurnerXP Pro, it's free and it does everything Nero does (the burning part of Nero of course), I don't need all those extra tools and applications, I'm happy if I can put my data on a disc without having to search 20 minutes for the right program. -
I've had a dot matrix printer too, man, I miss the sound of it . As for laser printers, I have an old HP Laserjet 4L (this things is like +10years old ) and it still works great. It's utterly slow, paper gets jammed quite often but I've been using the same toner for 2 years in a row. Getting a new one might set me back €50 (but I did a quick search and refilling should only cost like €15, altough I now prefer to replace the toner since I haven't been very nice to it ). One day I'll probably buy myself a color laserprinter, but I'm willing to pay a bit more for it because low priced color laserprinters usualy come with expensive toners and are bad at printing photos.

That one looks very interesting, I've never heard of it before but I'm definatly going to try it out . Another one to try is VirtualDub, it quite powerfull, but lacks support for quicktime and wmv vids (due to copyrights and that kind of stuff)

Windows UAC is the most crappy security system that exists. After a while (and I'm talking in hours, not days or weeks) you simple click it the UAC messages away without even reading them. Also, I can't accept the fact that it blocks my computer and isn't able to get focus ... Sorry to say this, but if you know what you're doing then it's useless, if you don't know what you're doing then it's just scaring people because they don't know what's happening. Anyway, I've never been fond about the windows security systems, that why I'm still running XP SP1 (I know what I do and I don't need to confirm everything I do, not in realy life, not on my pc).

Changes In Packet Loss Throughout The Day 0.0% to 8.0%?
wutske replied to Mordent's topic in Computer Networks
I doubt that the router is the problem since it's a time based problem (unless you power off the router every evening, then it might be the router that is getting unstable due to "overheating").My best guess is that the line you use is overloaded, if a switch (street cabinet, one at the ISP, ...) receives more data than it can buffer it'll simply drop this data untill it can buffer it again. I'd contact your ISP if it happens again, 8% data loss is unacceptable. Also, if this happens again (packet loss), try running a ping in the background (eg. "ping https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=BwkjVKfAD8uH8QfckIGgCQ&gws_rd=ssl -t" ). It'll ping to the google server untill you hit ctrl+c and then it'll give you an overview of how much packets didn't arrive or weren't responded. The reason why you should do this is because the server you're gaming on is overloaded and drops packets because it can't handle all of them. -
It realy depends on what you want, need, already have or want to get. First of all, what you already have and want to get. I am refering mostly to software because this is what uses your cores. It's nice to have 4 cores, but if your software is only capable of using 2 cores then it's rather useless (unless you can run multiple instances of the software ).Four cores allow you to do some heavy multitasking tough, but think about this: how often have you multitasked this much that you realy needed 2(3) additional cores ? I already have had such situation, but not that much that it's worth buying 2 or 3 extra cores .So imho, quad cores processors aren't important at the moment for the average (and above average) user. Quad core processors are only interesting for people that realy need it and this group of people is rather limited and tends to be a group of professional users.

You might want to check out drupal, I only have very limited experience with it and the only thing I can say about it is that it's complex compared to joomla. However, one of the bigger community sites (it's in fact nubmer one) here in Belgium is running drupal and it has proven to be very stable and powerfull. You might want to give it a try . About the wrapper thing, it uses iframes because it's the most compatible solution, other tricks might break (badly coded or very complex) websites.

I've tried joomla 1.5 a few days ago and it did like it. However, like Sten said, the lack of components and modules that work. The new API seems more powerfull, but also more complex (for creating templates).

Didn't know any of these sites before, thanks for sharing . I've switched from payware to freeware a few years ago and I must say I haven't had any problems since. Of course you've got to get used to the new software, but once you know them you sometimes don't want to switch back to the payed alternatives (mostly because the payed alternative don't offer anything more than the freeware).

Microsoft To Buy Yahoo! Yay or Nay?
wutske replied to xboxrulz1405241485's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I wouldn't like it if Microsoft would buy Yahoo. The main reason why I switched from Google (as search engine) to Yahoo is because they don't have such a big monopoly. Everything I did was google, google and yet again ... google, it almost felt like they were taking over the web -
again, the term hacking doesn't always have to mean doing something illegal. I mean, Top 10 Food&Drink hacks ?

bitTorrent isn't only use for illegal purposes. A lot of linux distributions are downloadable using torrents, so is a lot of other freeware (openoffice, cdburnerxp pro, ...). It's a fact that legal torrent use is marginal compared to the illegal use, but we must remember that the torrent network wasn't made for illegal purpose (so are other filesharing networks, none of them was initialy made for sharing music, videos, warez, ...)

I've recently read something in the newspaper about a new way to generate energy to make hydrogen. They would use the temperature difference between the ocean's water surface and a few meters below (the temperature difference can be up to 20°) to 'move' gasses that would drive some generators. Too bad it ain't free either, building a complete 100MW power station (including H20 -> H2 + O2 convertor) would costs about 500-600 milion .

Do You Remember Your Previous Web Hosts? A lot of sites disappearing?
wutske replied to yordan's topic in General Discussion
I only remember one free webhost that went down and that was only because they stopped providing free hosting (payed hosting was still available). It was a real shame actualy that they stopped, it had everything Xisto provided even without credits . Can't remember the name tough . -
added to my to-do list .btw, lol @ changelog, it's 6Mb in size .

I used to like RealPlayer, but it became slower and Windows Media Player only got better and better so I don't use it anymore. Using the right codec packs WMP can also play almost every file and if it doesn't I can still fall back on Media Player Classic (I use this as the default for QT en RM movies) and if MPC can't play it then mplayer does (and if mplayer doesn't then the file is corrupt )).
