  1. Hmm... the screenshot does look appealing. Downloading the trial now. I've been looking around for a shooter for quite some time now. Didn't find anything worth my time after Doom 3, HL2 and GTASA.
  2. Well, let's just take a hypothetical case then. Say there are two hypothetical brands of Jeans ... Lee and Levi. Let's say the telephone company has a new technology which let's them know which brand of clothing any subscriber is wearing whenever they make a phone call. Now, Lee enters into a deal with the telephone company (secretly of course!) telling them not to allow people wearing Levi make Long-distance phone calls for more than 5 minutes at a time whereas subscribers wearing Lee can make Long-distance phone calls for upto 10 minutes at a time. In exchange, Lee offers discounted Jeans to all the employees of the telephone company. Now ... when subscribers wearing Levi Jeans call up the phone company and ask them why they're being allowed only 5 minutes, the company tells them, "Sir, Lee Jeans are much superior to Levi when you are using the phone. I am afraid we cannot allow you to call long-distance for more than 5 min at a time for the safety of your <insert name of vital part of human anatomy here>" ... instead of just saying that they've entered into a deal with Lee and that is why subscribers wearing Lee Jeans get extra benefits. I would say Levi jeans is perfectly right to demand proof about the validity of their statement. That's exactly what AMD is doing here ... asking them to prove that AMD does not perform well with Skype. Joint marketing is fine ... but why not be open about it? You don't have to deal with brown envelopes. Intel and Skype could have had an open announcement saying that they've entered into a deal and Intel has asked Skype to grant extra features (10 people conferencing) for all users that use Intel. The normal features will be available to AMD users (5 people conferencing). Besides, it's a bloody chat service! Not a resource-hungry-cpu-cycle-eater! How bad can AMD fare with that?
  3. Where'd you get that idea? What makes you say that Microsoft thinks the Chinese are a threat? Obviously Microsoft does things only to it's advantage ... who doesn't?
  4. Hey, they're sending you a free USB drive. You have no right to ask them how much it is! For all you know, it might even be 10mb, but it still beats a floppy right?
  5. Wow! This is coming as a complete surprise to me. I didn't know that people considered the Old testament and New testaments as 2 different Gods. Of course, I'm not a Christian (I'm a Hindu), but I studied uptil my 10th grade in a Christian School with Good Friday and Christmas celebrations, but didn't really come across something like this.Could you tell us more about this? I find this a bit interesting.
  6. I totally disagree with you guys Jeigh and Cyborg. To me, this reeks of something similar to racial discrimination or apartheid. Let's just say Intel and AMD are 2 religions. And people have the freedom to choose whichever faith they wish to follow. Even though it's a very small thing (after how many people require 10 people conferencing?), it's a beginning. Skype had better be justified in saying that Intel is more 'capable' than AMD for their software, because ... I feel ... if they just prefer Intel because they don't like AMD's packaging or something, that stinks.
  7. Hehe ... Methinks someone's going to lose their usb drive as well and ask for another one from Microsoft. Oh yea ... wonder how I missed that. But you never can tell ... they might even send it .
  8. Hmm... where does it say that it's open only for US residents? I submitted mine (I'm from India) and it said that they're gonna send it in 6-8 weeks. The last time I registered for the free CD with SP2 they did send it to my home address.Anyways, thanks for the heads up on this .
  9. Are you kidding? I'm not taking any chances with my credits . Takes quiet some effort to keep them up as it is.
  10. final-design has a great website which he updates regularly .
  11. To be able to use PHP, you need to set up a web server on your computer first and then enable PHP, MySQL or whatever you need. The easiest way to do this would be to get WampServer (I'm assuming you are using Windows). Just download it from their site and install. Installation is as easy as double-clicking. Once installed, you just need to save all your .php files in: C:\wamp\www\anyfolder To see how your php script is working, start Wampserver (it'll start as a service and will be visible in the system tray), open any browser and type in: LOCALHOST/anyfolder/yourfilename.php assuming "yourfilename.php" is the php file you stored in the folder "anyfolder". This to set up a web server on your system. If you want to use the same script on some remote server, you will just have to upload it to the site, provided your host is giving you php access. Otherwise, the php files will appear as plain text files to anyone who visits them. Hope this helps you out. Post back if you have any more questions .
  12. A little off-topic but, do you mean C&C Generals? I've tried it in Cedega, got the latest version of it as well, but it just isn't working. It starts out fine and the game also starts without any problems. But in anywhere between 10-60sec, all my units and building blow up by themselves and I get a "You have been defeated". Any suggestions?
  13. You actually took such a massive print? Wouldn't it have been cheaper to have referred to it in another computer or maybe a laptop even? I sure hope so. This is turning out to be quite an interesting read. Hehe ... maybe you should call this "The Chronicles of aciminsk" .
  14. After trying unsuccessfully (and hopelessly) to make a good looking layout for my website, I finally opted to use a template and then customise it to my needs. I also realised that instead of developing my own code, it was easier to just use some CMS and customise that as well. Right now, I'm using Wordpress on my site. It's neat, quick and works seamlessly. That's something that will take me months to code on my own in PHP and it still wouldn't look as good or professional. The same with the template. You get custom templates for wordpress. Just install and use. But, of course, it's always good to have a go at designing a layout on your own. That'll help you in customising templates to suit your needs if you decide to use them.
  15. I guess that should be just fine. Since you'll be marking only one hard disk as bootable in BIOS, I guess it makes sense to just make changes to the grub loader on your main disk.
  16. I always use ext3 only. That's because it's the tried and tested file system for linux. I wouldn't mind reiserfs if it weren't for the fact that it causes some fragmentation problems and that it is not accessible in windows through explore2fs or any other program. I haven't had any problems so far with ext3 on my 17GB partition for Linux.
  17. Hmm ... does look a bit interesting. Especially the part about not having to spend more than 10 minutes a day with the game to do well . I think I'll try it out.
  18. That's very wierd. Don't the diplomatic relations come into play here? How can an Australian or British citizen be arrested in another country? Of course, freedom of speech is just an idea, but not meant to be taken too literally. For example, in India, freedom of speech is a fundamental right for all the citizens. But that doesn't mean you can go about yelling on the streets that you think so and so politician is a drinking, no-good, SOB. Chances are that you'll be in so much trouble that it'll be difficult to get out of. It's the same with newspapers. Occasionally they publish something that some section of the public doesn't like. The editor doesn't get arrested because of this, but it can lead to pickets and shouting slogans right in front of the newspaper's office.Besides, why do these guys worry about the Jewish Holocaust? There's nothing to disprove it nor to prove it. Maybe the killing of 3 million Jews by Hitler was a fable to begin with, but we can't deny the fact that he persecuted Jews viciously. Why not just give them the benefit of doubt and get on with our lives now instead of worrying about something that happened 50 years ago?
  19. Ah ... now that would be nice wouldn't it. Space tourism ... hmm .... "4 days and 5 nights package lunar visit! Holiday season bonus, special visit to the dark side of the moon for no extra cost!"Of course, I don't think we'll have moon trips in a hurry yet, but people sure are trying hard to make space available to the common people. Maybe in another 100 years or so, life on earth will resemble Star Wars.
  20. Six primary editions?!! Wow ... that's quite a bit. And one without Media Player? How dumb! I mean, if you don't want Media Player, just remove it after installation. That's what Add/Remove programs is for .
  21. This gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "Having your friends home for dinner" .There must be some benefit to cannibalism. I mean, it's not the question of eating human beings, but rather about whether there is any use in eating human flesh. Earlier, some tribes used to practice cannibalism not for the pleasure of eating, but because they felt they inherited the talents and skills of the person whom they were eating. For example, if a person were clever or intelligent, they would eat him so as to become clever or intelligent. But this was done only after the person died ... atleast that's what I remember reading in a book. Sometimes they even ate their parents to "absorb" their wisdom. While we're on the topic of human flesh, a friend of mine told me that some people eat human embryos <shudder> ... in some country .... is this true? I've heard that it's served as a regular item on the menu in the restaurant <shudder> <shudder>. Any truth in this?
  22. And Windows users have to pay (in more ways than one) to get updates to their software. In Linux, everything is free and you are allowed to make changes to the program code as and how you want. This kind of freedom is the most important thing IMO. I agree with xboxrulz that Linux is for everyone. Just because everyone is used to Windows, Linux shouldn't be treated as a difficult thing. Rather it should be treated as something new and you can't learn a new thing without some amount of effort.
  23. Actually, you can stop at any time and pick it up again the next day since you'll be working with a Gentoo LiveCD in any case. But everytime you stop in the middle, the next time you restart your computer, you have to remember the following steps: 1. Setup the network 2. Mount the required partitions 3. Chroot into the partition you're working on 4. Update environment 5. Pick it up again where you left it the last time But, what I would suggest is this: 1. First Day: Configure it upto the part where you have to chroot into the environment. 2. Second Day: Configure it upto the part where you are asked to exit from the chrooted environment and reboot into your new installation. 3. Third Day: Boot into your system and start setting up stuff from the Desktop Documentation Resources (X, ALSA, KDE) and you don't have to switch it off anymore. The time you take for each one depends on how you do the installation. Since I've read the handbook umpteen number of times (I still can't do a thing without referring to it all the time ), I can complete the first 2 steps in 5-6 hours. The time taken in the third step depends on your internet connection speed, your processor and your RAM. Maybe it'll be best if you start on it on a Friday evening (Geeks don't get dates ... duh) so that you can set it up to install KDE in the night and you'll have the system up and running in the morning . That's what I would do. Hope this helps you out. Have fun with Gentoo .
