What's The Difference Between Linux And Unix?!?
abhiram replied to liquidsparxx's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I'm yet to see my first Unix operated comp. I've seen GNU/Linux, Solaris and BSD, but not a single system running plain old-fashioned Unix in my univ. Great discussion going on here. Lots of things that I didn't know . -
I've played the demo. It seems pretty neat. I'm thinking of buying (Yes! Buying for a change ) the full version of the game. It's got 6 playable characters and this seems to be the only Sonic game available for the PC. I'm a big fan of Sonic. Has anyone played this game? Here's the link: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It's times like these that I wish I owned the Gamecube. Does anyone find it surprising that Sega's official mascot came out for the Nintendo console? From what I've read on the net, Sonic was created as a rival to Nintendo's Mario.

Got a popup window from firefox for the second one saying 'There is a script in this Flash file which is causing your computer to become unresponsive. Disable it?'Maybe you should just check up the script again.

Well, I don't think we'll have the time to learn Sanskrit until we're quite old and ready to retire . We should have started when we were younger, but now might be a bit difficult. Yup, I got the link. Thanks. I did read a few pages online but then came to the part about Wilhelm Reich and then started Googling about him. It's a rather interesting book, and I'll see if I can get my hands on a copy. Hehe, too bad about the incident in your village. But who knows how many such items are still lying buried under the surface?

Sounds interesting. And looks rather different from the VirtualPet thingy where you'd have to keep feeding your pet and making it happy or it'll die. I like the part where your pet can leave your desktop and go and live on someone else's desktop like an ambassador. Too bad I'm mostly on Linux and can't use it. Maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

Hehe ... that's a very wierd problem. You mean to say you've tried the keyboard on 4 different systems and all of them shut down whenever you press the Caps Lock key? Then, I guess you're better off trying to sell it on ebay. If it were happening only on that system, then I would have said it was probably a virus, but since it's the same on 4 different PCs, it's probably a short circuit or something. Pressing Caps Lock probably sends a shutdown message to the processor. Notice from vizskywalker: Changed Ctrl to Caps Lock in accordance with apparent change made in thread starter

This actually makes sense. I never looked at it that way. With all the people shouting their throats off on Casteism being bad, it's just possible that the Indian Society was able to reach it's height of civilization thanks to the effective division of work in the community. But it would be interesting to find out on what basis did the initial caste system arise. How were people alloted the caste initially? Was it on lots or voluntarily joining a particular caste? When exactly did the Caste system come into being?

Hehe ... yea, I know how you feel. Remember the 'Low disk space' nuisance in the system tray. Every 10 minutes or so, out pops a balloon telling you that you've got low disk space in blah blah drive. I mean, if it tells you once it's fine. But constantly reminding you even after you close the balloon is very annoying.

Hmm ... yea, I guess that's a good point. As it's mentioned in your link of World Aviation, you'd need a person well versed in Sanskrit as well as proficient in Mathematics, Aeronautics and Physics to a certain level of competence to be able to comprehend what it actually means. My bad . But I don't think HC Verma intended for the book to be used solely for IIT Preparation! Oh right. You did mention that. And at the end of the Dwapara Yuga, the Bramhastra destroyed all existence and life started again. But still, aren't most records of Scientific literature and temples and stuff which date back to the time of Mahabharata and the Indus Valley Civilization found only in the Indian sub-continent? Why isn't there even a trace of such a civilization in any place other than India? Also, how does this theory fit in with the other ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia? They don't have any similarities with the ancient Indians. Yea, I think you may be right about that. It's a shame really. I guess we can only theorize what happened. You're right about the German thing though. I remember reading somewhere about the Germans claiming to be a true Aryan race or something, but don't remember where. @Opethian If Indians started making movies solely on Hinduism and ancient Indian history, how many Indians do you think will watch those movies. Movies are mostly meant for recreation and that's what people expect them to be. Of course, in the dawn of Indian Cinema, many movies were made about the epics Mahabharat and Ramayana (in Black and White of course) but then slowly, as cinema progressed, times changed. Hinduism is an ancient religion. As CaptainRon mentioned, the principles of Hinduism today were in effect even before it came to be known specifically as 'Hinduism'. Hinduism isn't as popular as Christianity because it isn't organised like the Catholic Church is. Nor do Hindus go about saying 'In Hinduism lies salvation'. The only large organisation is the ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) but you don't have to be a Hindu to be a part of it. The ISKCON is more about global human values and the teachings of the Gita which are applicable to anyone as a human being.

This is a rather interesting site. I'm gonna read up more on this tonight. Now, coming to the earlier topic of discussion about Dwaraka ... see, at the end of every yuga, (from what I remember), Bramha starts the dissolution of everything. Supposedly the earth will be submerged under water and all the creatures will perish. That's when he creates 'Manu' or the first man and his progeny will continue to populate the earth. Please correct me if I'm wrong, this is what I remember from childhood. I'm not sure if this includes the destruction of the earth too, because the earth is considered to have a spirit and is known as 'Mother' Earth (remeber Varaha Avatar where Lord Vishnu saves the Earth from a Rakshasa). Or maybe it's possible that the Dwaraka that was found might not even be Krishna's Dwaraka, but some another city that got submerged later. I haven't read about them. I haven't even HEARD about them. Forgive me, I'm a bit dense on stuff like this, but I'm trying to learn and understand . How come we don't even hear about this stuff. It's not just me, but there are many people who have no idea about these scientific Sanskrit records. Are these still in existence or have they been destroyed? Are there any English translations of them (I have absolutely no knowledge of Sanskrit)? Why are these stuff hidden away from us? If they've been found, there are quite a large number of Sanskrit scholars in India and abroad also who can decipher the stuff. If advanced technologies like anti-gravity are mentioned in these documents, why aren't people working on them? If you read H.C. Verma's 'Concepts of Physics', there is a particular chapter in which he describes that the speed of light has been accurately defined in terms of 'Yojanas' which when converted to light years, comes very close to the present day accepted value of 3e8 m/s. Fine ... where's the rest of the stuff? If it's in publication, I'd definitely want to read it. In fact, I'd like to tell people about it. People take the Western Technology to be a forerunner without even giving a thought to the ancient genius that was prevelant in the Indian Sub-continent when the West was still living in caves and hunting with rocks and stones. Which is the lie? The Aryan-Dravidian thing or the fact that that's what I was taught to believe in my 6th standard? From what I remember, back in the early 1900s, there was a British explorer who discovered the Harappan ruins and the Indus Valley Civilization (with a 'z' and not 's' ) and then and there postulated the Aryan-Dravidian thing that Dravidians were the original settlers and Aryans were the invaders who pushed them down South. This was a largely accepted fact till recently when further research was done to prove that this was all bull-s***.

You know ... this is a very interesting post. I haven't been this interested in a post since a long time and I've actually read the whole thing from top to bottom .So, in essence, you mean to say that there existed a very advanced technology and society back in the dwapara yuga. But, there is just one thing that's always confused me. How long IS a yuga? Does the Kali yuga extend all the way back to the dinosaurs? Or did it start at sometime near Asoka's rule? The haziest thing about the Yugas (I mean the part I don't understand) is that, each Yuga is supposedly one day in the life of Bramha (the god of creation) and at the end of his day, he destroys everything .... i mean EVERYTHING .... the earth, the people, the animals! Lord Vishnu (The god who sustains) selects a few people to carry on the knowledge from one yuga to the next and thus protects them (Sakula Avatar ... from the 'Ten Incarnations of Lord Vishnu' where he protects a king and the seven sages). So, if Kali Yuga actually dates back to the dinosaurs, and that Dwapara Yuga had a completely different evolution pattern, then it's very much probable that there was a very developed society back in the time of the Mahabharat. But, it does depend on how a Yuga is. If a Yuga extends only a few thousand years, then we've just got to wonder ... 'What happened to all that technology? Why arent' there any written records of them?'Hehe ... in school, we were lead to believe in the 'Aryan-Dravidian' theory. That all the dark complexioned South Indians were actually Dravidians and that the 'fair' North Indians are Aryans. It wasn't till I read it in a magazine couple of years ago, that this theory was taken for granted and no one even bothered to follow up on it until very recently.

Well, it's no biggie. I mean, you have firefox extensions for the same as well. But I am curious about the widgets. Will these widgets be like Yahoo's Konfabulator or will these things close once the browser window is closed? I'm not particularly fond of Opera. I've tried it out, but then came back to firefox because I missed all the extensions .

Head Transfer What do u think about the head transfer?
abhiram replied to doctor's topic in Science and Technology
It's a 'head' transplant. There's no question of memories here. You're taking the whole shoot off the neck and planting it on another body. Only problem might be that you'll never know what your body's been upto before the transplant . -
Well the latest knoppix and gentoo live CDs both come with firefox. But it's weird that there still are distros which are only giving mozilla. Is mozilla being developed at all now? I thought firefox was mozilla and netscape's offspring with much better useability and features builtin. As far as IE aping firefox's features, I must say "A wise man is one who realises his mistake and tries to correct himself" It's not a bad thing that they're trying to improve IE. It definitely needs a LOT of improvement. But trying to push it onto people saying it's the 'leet' browser just doesn't cut ice.

Peanut Butter Into A Diamond?!? What a interesting fact.
abhiram replied to kgd2006's topic in Science and Technology
Why peanut better at all? If you could sustain that much pressure and temperature, any organic matter might turn into diamond. After all, the original diamonds were obtained from coal which is a form of carbon. -
Head Transfer What do u think about the head transfer?

Well, I've got to agree with illini319. There's no way that you can reconnect the spinal cord back to the brain. That would involve regeneration or reproduction of nerve cells which, if were possible, would have helped paralytics a lot! -
Seagate To Laungh 750GB Drive !!
abhiram replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I don't know. I've been using my 160gb for a year and half now without any problems. Take it with me everywhere i go ... home, friend's college, train journeys ... even to my relative's to fix their comps and install software ... no problems yet. That's the reason I bought the 200gb, so I can take all the mp3s floating on the campus LAN with me before I pass out in another month or so. Maybe even the videos and movies too. Hard to get stuff in my area . Btw, both are IDE drives ... 160b - samsung and 200gb - seagate. -

Curses! Foiled again! I've only got a piddling 512MB. But don't worry ... gonna start working in July. I'm gonna build myself a comp to end all comps -
Seagate To Laungh 750GB Drive !!
abhiram replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Hehe ... eat your hearts out! I got myself a new 200gb HDD. Now, with my 160GB, that's 360GB baby . But, yea, if the 750GB thing comes out, that'll be great. Let's face it, we need more and more space. So, I guess hard disks will just keep getting more and more massive, while becoming cheaper and smaller. Wonder if the 750GB harddisk works properly with Windows. -
As WeaponX mentioned, the credit system was solely developed for this board by OpaQue. I don't think he'll sell it or be willing to give you the source code. Because, then you might be able to find some loop holes in the code and break the credits system to get infinite credits. But, you could try and ask him about how to go about developing the code. I'm sure he'll help you out if you need to make something similar.

I've got a similar system. My guess would be the drivers. That's probably why even the direct3d tests aren't working. Try getting fresh updated drivers from Nvidia or if you already have, then try to get patched up drivers from Guru3d. I had a problem on my system too with continuous restarts whenever I played GTA San Andreas or any graphics intensive game. I found out that there was a fault with the drivers I downloaded from Nvidia and after installing the drivers from Guru3d, everything worked just fine.

Well, it surely wouldn't hurt if you could explain a bit about the game. Also, why are you using a referral link? When you're showing people something like this, you should give them the option of either using your reference or going directly to the site. Here's the actual address: http://www.themafiaboss.com/ There are already many browser based games. What's so special about this one? Can't expect people to even take note of your post if you don't mention what's so good about this game.
