  1. There's a GTX as well? What's the difference? Why does nvidia give these silly extensions to their cards? Which one is the best? If I'm going to buy a card, it better be a good one right?
  2. I'm sure they're dam expensive, but it's not just that ... the quadro series all use PCI-E and not AGP. The whole idea behind buying a card is not just to run Maya, but also to be able to use the same system for another couple of years atleast. I'm not a high-end Maya user, just trying to learn something because I've got time on my hands. It actually works okay with my onboard geforce4mx, but once the polygon count increases too much, that's when I have problems. Went to the shops today to kinda ask around about which cards are available ... all of them are stocked up with the silly 5200 card which apparently is the cheapest. One guy actually had a 6600 and said he could get a 6600 GT as well if I wanted it. I'm considering that card right now.
  3. Well, my motherboard is 2 years old and it probably entered the market 3-4 years ago (in India atleast). Will any 8x graphics card work with it ... say the latest AGP card that nvidia or ATI came out with? I'm not sure if I can get the 7600 or higher within my budget. But if you say it's that good, then I'll just postpone the purchase to the end of next month when I'll get my first salary. How are the ATI cards performance in comparison with nvidia? I'm kinda prejudiced towards nvidia, but if ATI is really good, then I won't mind going for that either.Edit: Looks like the AGP models for nvidia end with the geforce 6600 series. I guess I should go and check out if this model is even available at my place. What is the difference between the GT, LE and regular models?
  4. I'm going to buy a new graphics card for my ASUS A7N8X-VM 400 Motherboard. It has an integrated nVidia GeForce 4mx GPU, but I've decided it's time to upgrade cause I'm learning Maya these days (also, all the new games need pixel shader support). What I'm worried about is which graphics card is supported on my Motherboard. My motherboard supports 8x graphics 1.5V. Here are some pics from the motherboard manual: Photos Gallery - PicTiger Does this mean ABSOLUTELY ANY 8x graphics card will work with my motherboard? Does that include 2.0 and 3.0? I have no idea which one is supported by my motherboard. I'd like to take an nVidia card (coz it's recommended for GTASA ) with pixel shaders and 256MB atleast. Can anyone share any info on the GeForce 5200 and GeForce 6200 cards and whether they'll work on my system? I'd really appreciate it. I'd also like to know what other cards are available. I'm not looking in the very high price range, but something that'll work fairly well with all the new games coming out these days. I've already got 512MB RAM, so, I just need a good graphics card. Thanks .
  5. Heh, that's funny. Dude, anything windows does isn't surprising. I've see so many wierd things happen with windows, nothing would surprise me now.
  6. It sure is a good thing that it's being offered for free. This isn't something that Micrsoft is used to . But does it allow to install only Windows operating systems or Linux as well. Because I've used VMWare and it does a bang-up job in both Windows and Linux. How good is this compared to VMWare?
  7. AListApart is one awesome site for CSS. That's one of the sites which every CSS guru recommends for lots of stuff. Here's a layout that I made using the 'Suckerfish Dropdown menus' from AListApart: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/mystyle.css http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/iefix.js The IE fix should be copied into a separate file called (as in your case) drop_down.js. What this fix does is, it simulates the :hover attribute for list elements for IE. IE doesn't support :hover for any element other than hyperlink (i.e. a:hover). The fix is then included in your header using a <script> tag. Then to make the appearance the same in both firefox and IE, the code: /* Fix IE. Hide from IE Mac \*/* html ul li { float: left; }* html ul li a { height: 1%; }/* End */ should be placed at the beginning of the CSS file menustyle.css (as in your case). CSS menus take a little time to get used to, but they're not that difficult. I was as confused as you are when I started out with it, but just hang in there .
  8. The tracker is the one which tells me how many seeders, peers and leechers are available for a particular torrent right? It seems to be working ok, in the sense that it's connecting and retrieving the IP addresses. Yea, I guess that's what I'll do. I think my system needs a break anyways . Well, the file has reached 57% and there are quite a number of people who have more than that. But I think the problem is with the number of leechers which seems to have increased enormously. Now there are almost thrice the number of leechers than there were when I started. I think the best thing to do right now would be to just forget about it for a while and then try it out in a few days. Thanks for your help guys .
  9. My connection is approx 40kbps, which means a max download speed of 5kBps. I've been trying to download a particular file from torrents and it was going ok till last night when all of a sudden the speed fell down drastically. Now, it's giving me 0.0 - 1.0 kBps at any point of time !I haven't done anything different nor installed anything new that's eating up the bandwidth. I've used both BitComet and uTorrent and it's still working terribly. Of course the file I'm downloading is very healthy, with 13 seeds and more than 50 peers. Also regular download speeds haven't changed in firefox ... I'm still getting 5kBps in that. Any idea why this is happening? I was getting 4-5 kBps speed initially and now, it's just ridiculous.
  10. Hmmm ... seems fair enough. Didn't know there was an UNBOOTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error as well. Doesn't Microsoft have a helpline or something for stuff like this? You'd think they'd have some well documented page for help with BSODs.
  11. Really nice pics. I don't know what it is about the Sepia, but it gives the pics a real nice feel. I like the first pic the best. It's got that special "I don't know where this path leads me" kind of feel to it .
  12. This is a pretty nifty tool. Thanks . But it would have been better if it automatically resized the image captured to the exact size of the website. The best thing is it outputs the entire page into a single file.
  13. My friend gets the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error once in every 2 months or so and he kept getting it even after his first hard disk crashed and he got himself a new hard disk. Everytime it happens I tell him to go into the recovery console and run the CHKDSK /P /R command for every drive. It worked for him everytime. In fact, it worked quite well for others also to whom I suggested this method. My guess is that UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME comes up because some partition gets corrupted. By running CHKDSK /P /R it forces a check and automatically repairs all errors detected. The next time it happens, try it out, it's always worked for me before.
  14. You know, I like the layout. It's neat and orderly and the colors also look good. Of course, it's a little hard to believe that the logo is a book , no offense, but it resembles a welding mask. But although there are ads all over the site, it doesn't look cluttered and is rather neatly arranged.I don't think you need to change the size nor font as far as the logo is concerned, it looks good.
  15. I know what you mean ... not uncommon at all! Usually whenever something like this happens (continous reboots), the first thing I do is backup MyDocuments, C Drive and any saved files in PrgoramFiles and do a format and reinstall. That's easier than cleaning any dam virus or problem in the system and takes much less to do. Of course this has never been a problem because there's only one user account. That usually is a hardware problem, and not unfrequently the RAM. But in this case, since the RAM is fine, I'm inclined to think it's the Hard disk. Try this: 1. Go into the recovery console using the Windows XP CD. 2. Select the Partition in which windows is installed. 3. Type 'chkdsk /p /r c:' assuming windows is installed in C drive, else substitute with another letter. 4. Better to do it for all the partitions, just in case. Then try starting windows. My friend had a problem like this and this kinda fixed it. Of course his system kept giving a 'UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME' BSOD.
  16. I learnt COBOL in an institute about 8 years ago when I was in the 9th standard . Back then I was pretty good at it, but now I hardly remember anything about it at all. But, is there any application for COBOL now? I mean this generation of programming languages are obsolete now. You can code more easily and efficiently in C or C++. Besides, the formatting for COBOL is so rigid that it takes quite a while to debug big programs.
  17. I don't think there's any need to use antivirus for Linux. It just DOESN'T get infected . But, if I remember correctly, you can use clamAV, here's the link: http://www.clamav.net/ But mind you, it's a linux antivirus to detect Viruses in Windows partitions. There seems to be a version available for windows as well, but never tried it out. If you need a good firewall, you can try learning to use IPtables. There are some firewall packages out there, but all they do is configure the IPtables with a nice GUI. Hope that helps .
  18. I think it's explained in the second part: This looks like a pretty neat thing. But I'm using HEdit and offset 0x412b6 doesn't have start, it has some silly characters. Does it differ for sp2?
  19. A little off-topic, but I've never been in the AC compartment. It's a little too expensive over the sleeper class. Of course, you could have also been in the general compartment, but I was just assuming that it's impossible to sleep in there. Also, I would least expect a guy with a camera (digicam in this case) to travel in general. Maybe you're right ... but don't take what I say at face value. I'm no expert. Maybe we can get m^e into this discussion and ask him wht's his take on the pics. He's a photography buff.
  20. I don't get it ... how will an email forwarding service help you over come spam? Besides, isn't there an option in yahoo and hotmail which enables you to specify mail from a particular address as not spam?
  21. Easiest thing in the world .... use Meebo . That's what I use most of the time to keep my bandwidth from getting bogged down by yahoo messenger.
  22. Glad to hear it . Always good to see another person make the shift from IE to firefox.
  23. I like XP. In fact, I would say that Microsoft did a really good job with XP when compared to the other versions. Of course it still crashes, BSODs and has hell of a lot of security holes, but IMO the program handling, ease of use and multi-tasking are miles ahead of 98. My brother keeps saying 98 is better, but I attribute that to his having less experience with XP. Besides, 98 is outdated. NTFS is definitely more efficient than fat and 98 has no support at all for it. One of the most irritating things about 98 is having to reboot for every small thing .... change the IP address? Reboot! Installed Office? Reboot! Of course, XP also asks for reboot, but that's only in the case of older programs which will run even without a reboot and Anti-virus programs which is expected. I agree .
  24. Thanks ... but for someone who travels from Hyderabad to Chennai 8-10 times a year, it's not too difficult to notice. The pics are nice, the resolution is really good especially if you consider the fact that they've been taken from a moving train. But it's what I see all the time, can't really appreciate palm trees and lakes.
  25. Usually there's a link to email address of the designer of the template on the site ... you could try checking that out. But otherwise, I'd have to agree with Alegis ... it's near impossible to track down a particular font.
