Pluto's Two New Moons They have a name
abhiram replied to sonoftheclayr's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Good one . But Nix and Hydra sound like goofy names to me as well. Isn't Hydra a microscopic organism that has some wierd ways of locomotion? And Nix also means 'Nothing' in some language, I'm not sure which one. -
Rubik's Cube, How Many Faces Do You Do ?
abhiram replied to mustra's topic in Science and Technology
Hey ... I'm into speedcubing. I can do the whole cube averaging anywhere from 2.5 - 3 minutes. If anyone is interested, I would recommend the following site for beginners: http://jeays.net/rubiks.htm Very clear explanations and easy to follow. That's the one I used and I'm still using the same algorithms explained there. -

What Do You Think Of My New Laptop (Sager 5720) Sager 5720
abhiram replied to GoranCro's topic in Hardware Workshop
OMG! So many games on one small powerhouse?!! Unfair! You shouldn't post such things here ... you make so many people (like myself) jealous! :(Now, I'm seriously considering a laptop to buy with my first salary . A portable gaming machine would be awesome. -
Haven't heard about that, but this is still new technology. It needs time to sink in. Of course, we can still play high end games with excellent Framerate and resolution with a good graphics card, but with the increasing demand of more and more realistic games, I believe the only way out is to have a PPU which will perform these things much more efficiently than a regular processor.

You mean the Ageia processor with PhysX? Check out the demo videos they look too good to be true. Just like what amitbhandari says, huge amounts of debris and shrapnel flying about all over the place, but the processor manages it seamlessly. But the problem obviously arises when you actually have to write games so that they make use of the PPU. Just like the dual core technology, if the program isn't designed to use 2 processors simultaneously, then we'll have one processor doing all the work and the other one sitting idle all the time while the program is running. Check out the videos at: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/physx

Internet Access On Airplanes. a good thing or a bad thing?
abhiram replied to iGuest's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Oh boy! I'm terribly out of place in this conversation. The minute I saw this thread's name, I was like (in my typical South Indian attitude ) "Can't people live without internet for even a couple of hours?"The first time I've ever been on a flight was in January in this year only because the company I'm gonna join in August wanted all the new recruits from all over India to come over and take a look at the office in Mumbai. Of course it was only an hour's flight, and I got the seat next to the window .... it was pretty cool . Otherwise, been in travelling in trains all my life. Now coming back to the topic of internet, we've already got wifi in the airports and movies and songs in the flight. Is internet even necessary? In my opinion, even cell phones aren't really that necessary on a plane. From what I know, planes have had telephones for emergency purposes (at exorbitant prices of course) for quite some time now. Can't you stay out of touch with your loved ones for a few hours? Ok, maybe this is from the perspective of one who thinks flying is a big deal, but frequent flyers, people who fly 4-5 times a week can probably think of better ways to pass the time than internet and constant business calls. Look ... it's an excuse to have some time off from the crazy cell phone and non-stop emails from your colleagues. After all that's what you do all the time you're not on a flight ... "I'm in a plane, I'll get back to you in 3 hours" . That's the time you get to yourself ... maybe read a book, or watch some TV or listen to some music and just relax. I'm sure the Business Class is better than the Economy Class. A few hours without intenet and cellphones isn't going to kill all those CEOs!No offense to anyone . -

Well, I play a lot of games myself and prefer Linux over windows. Now, games which are made for Linux work seamlessly. But there are only so many games that run natively on Linux. The native Linux games that I've played are:1. Quake 3 Arena2. Unreal Tournament 20043. Neverwinter NightsWell, I do like to listen to some music in the background when playing the game. Q3A and UT2004 had some sound issues if I played amaroK in the background, in the sense that there would be no more sound coming from the game, just from the music player. But this didn't affect gameplay and I wasn't bothered. Neverwinter Nights is by far the best native Linux game. The sound works perfectly, I can listen to background music from amarok AND the graphics are terrific. I played the whole of first and second levels and there was no problem at all. Now, thanks to Cedega, some Windows games can also be made to work in Linux. The Windows games that worked for me (without any hassles) are:1. Spiderman 2 PC2. Sonic Adventure DX Director's CutSonic didn't work all that well since it's sound depends on the WMA9 codec and I didn't have it installed. Nevertheless, the game worked seamlessly if only silently!Cedega offers ready, out-of-the-box support for a large number of Windows games. You could check it out.You can always expect problems if you're playing a Windows game on Linux. I'm usually always on Linux, but use windows only to play games and nothing else.

This is one GOD-Awesome game. I've got to get me one of these. I'm gonna start working soon and I hope I can get a full system upgrade by the time this gets released. The graphics are just terrific and it's a completely new type of game combining so many different genres of gameplay. But the guy the video says something about multiplayer. I hope there's single player functionality as well. If we're gonna have to play multiplayer all the time, I don't think it'll be that easy for me.

Alright, I'm glad to hear it . But you might have considered putting it in another forum ... coz this one's about "Help with Social Life" ?

Hey I've seen videos of the new Super Mario Bros. I'm half-tempted to go out and buy a DS myself. I wonder if it's available in India. I was crazy about Mario when I was a kid .

You really do? Or are you just quoting from the video?

You know ... it actually looks nice. Nice to see that they've actually introduced a new concept for the menus. But, I'm just wondering how it performs. More resource hungry I suppose. I'll definitely get a hold of it sooner or later, but till then as Wutske said ... I'm quite happy with 2K3 and OO2.

I do quite a bit to make my Linux desktop look cool. But with windows, there's no way I'm installing an app which sits in the background all the time eating away CPU cycles and Memory space making my cycle as slow as possible. Already with 512MB RAM, my installation chokes if I start running DC++. I can only guess that if I install this little thingy, my system will hang up for a while with the bloody hourglass cursor whenever I press Alt+Tab!

I Don't Want Norton To Delete My Viruses And Hacktools!
abhiram replied to tansqrx's topic in Security issues & Exploits
Believe it or not, I've had the same problem once. It's quite easy to overcome, you just tell Norton which folders not to scan and also set the virus detection mode to 'Always ask me what to do'.I'm using Norton 2005 which I've installed with GooglePack, but I think it should work in Norton 2004 and 2003 also. Click Options in Norton Antivirus and then click on 'Auto-Protect' on the left. The Auto-Protect option will expand. Click on 'Exclusions' below it and then set the folder you want to be excluded on the right. Do the same thing for 'Manual Scan'.If you're not sure where the hacktool or virus is, you can set Auto-Protect ->'How to respond when a virus is found'->'Deny Access to the infected file' and also set 'Manual Scan'->'How to respond when a virus is found'->'Ask me what to do'This worked for me. Hope it helps you out. -
MP3 Player Of Choice? I Need Suggestions!
abhiram replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Hardware Workshop
Hey hey! I've seen an IPod Video Color (5G) with 30GB with a friend of mine. I must say the black skin looks awesome. I'm gonna get one as soon as I start working. The controls are really easy to use, picture quality is great, and the sound is just beautiful. Besides, with 30GB you just have to load songs once and that's it. -
I'm crazy about computers. I'd learn anything that is new to me and I find interesting. I first came in contact with *nix systems when I joined college and had to work on SunOS systems for a course. I really liked it since it was completely different and learnt a few shell commands. After the course also, I still kept using the same systems for personal work like browsing the net. But my real foray into Linux came with Mandrake 2 years ago when I bought my own computer in my dorm. Later on I switched to Slackware for a while, loved it (still do) and then shifted to Gentoo and have been using Gentoo ever since. Now, even while using Slackware, Windows was my main OS, because there were so many things I needed in windows and installing similar applications with their dependencies and libraries was a bit of a pain in Linux. But, enter Gentoo ... and there have been times when I haven't booted into Windows for weeks. I'll just state why I prefer Linux over windows .... No Antivirus needed, no firewall, no anti-spyware, no slowdown and system instantly accessible from anywhere in the campus via SSH, even from Windows systems. Also, sharing resources on the campus LAN is not a problem at all, since in Linux, firefox (once opened) doesn't slow down even if someone is copying stuff from your comp. It works just as it does normally. I still use Windows for my project work (can't get F90 compiler in Linux) and for games. But to give credit where credit's due, Windows XP really has a lot of things in the right place. I mean, other than terrible security and poor performance, it has been designed with the utmost care to be as user-friendly as possible, maybe overdoing it a bit .
