  1. Hello, I got an evaluation copy of Windows Server 2003 and I'm already having problems. I'm just trying to expand my knowledge using my home network. Ok, I have a network domain (moonburst1.gotdns.org) and I *think* I setup my server correctly. However, when I try to connect my laptop to the domain, I get the following: After I read that, here is what I pretty much looked like: I have a DNS server running so I'm not sure of what the problem is... anyone here a Windows network administrator or know a little bit more than I do about what I'm doing?? I'm assuming you can do this on a home network because in some of the Wizards, it even mentions "small networks" and "small home networks" Thanks for any help! I'd like to get this working! [N]F EDIT: Oh, and if a mod thinks this should go in OS > Windows, please feel free to put it there. I put it here because it mainly deals with networking.
  2. I am really quite impressed! I've tried to play other text based games and this is MY FAVORITE!!! I'm hooked! I wish I could make something like this!! It is just awesomely cool!!! I'm going to show some other people I know your site and see if they might like it... I don't know if they're text gamers, but this is REALLY addicting I love it! :(Thanks for sharing the site![N]F
  3. I don't have the adblock extension and I didn't get any pop-ups... maybe you guys should check for adware or run a scan if you haven't in a while. Yeah, the site is like REALLY REALLY REALLY slow! What is that server hooked up to? A 28K dial-up connection? Seems to me like a VERY overloaded server. Start posting and move to Xisto!! Anything than what you're currently on! I gave up when the site hit 27% because it was going so slow!! [N]F
  4. so, uh, m^e... you want to stuff my account with a few extra credits for "emergency use"?? lol, J/K!! Anyway, that is a strange bug. But I've been in the 3X to 4X credits for the longest time, mostly because I have my company website hosted here on Xisto and I'd look REALLY bad if it ever went down but before that, I'd let my credits slip to negitive and find my site showing the "account suspended" page. It could also be a cPanel bug assuming the credits script interacts with WHM... I don't think Apache has been touched so it has to be either the script or cPanel... who knows. But since I don't work for Xisto Corp. or even an admin of Xisto, I couldn't really tell... but it is just a hint from what I know about the industry. [N]F
  5. Actually, I saw a video online about making an engine run on water. It is VERY possible and of course the by-product of water is... water! So essentially, it is possible for that. But that is another topic! Anywho, mini-robots running around in my mouth?? No thank you. I'll stick to brushing my teeth daily. lol [N]F
  6. Hey! My local RadioShack store is closing and stuff is 40-70% off so I took a look around. I purchased this $80 wireless keyboard and mouse set for $47 and I think it is great. A friend of mine also has this exact same keyboard. I'm using it right now with my laptop and I love it! I can type almost 20 feet away from my computer, lol. Well, when I get my new computer, it is going to be used for that. The mouse is really uncomfortable (to me) though so I'll probably end up just buying a better mouse (probably not wireless, but something MUCH more comfortable). The keyboard is from Logitech so it is really good and comfortable. I couldn't have asked for a better keyboard! Here's the link to the product on Logitech's site: http://www.logitech.com/en-ca I also picked up 100' of network cable and a retractable 4' flat ethernet for my travels... but I'm really digging the keyboard! I just have to mess around and see if I can get it to work on Linux. Probably won't, but it's worth a try! [N]F
  7. Sounds like I must download!!! Hehe.... I've used the older versions when it first came out. It was pretty cool... time to try this version out!! hehe... I love google[N]F
  8. <sarcasm>Uhoh!!! REALLY? I had NO idea that search engines could *gulp* SEE WHAT YOU SEARCHED!!!!! OMG!!!</sarcasm> Wow, you actually think that's big news?? EVERY search engine (big and even to the tinyest) will log searches. I have a local search engine that logs the search query, date and time of the query, time it took for the search, and how many results popped up. Also, Google couldn't POSSIBLY keep everything from day one without deleting. Honestly, eventually hard disks go bad and fail, old back-ups get destroyed or over-written, servers go down, etc. The only way Google could keep that much data was if they had a super data center with room for several HUNDRED TERABYTES! If not, several THOUSAND. Well, I have a question for you: what about Yahoo? They have MORE services than Google, they FIRST offered free webmail, they have a ton of content. Maybe it's Yahoo we should worry about, not Google... sheesh... everyone always has to pick on the big company... [N]F
  9. Alright, member intervention!!! :(Ok, lets run through this list (even if you think you've already done these, do them again)-Check that none of your posts were edited or deleted-Check that you didn't "accidently" spam or take content and not give proper credit-Check that you didn't request any services that cost hosting creditsThat's about all I can think of that would cause a huge drop in credits. m^e might be able to assist in this issue.[N]F
  10. Wow, that's very interesting! Like most others on here, I've been looking for something like this!! I'm going to have some fun now! lol[N]F
  11. Yep: Login > Account Settings > Very bottom you can enter: -IP -Name Server 1 -Name Server 2 (they just added support for a secondary name server not to long ago) -IPv6 -Mail Server -Canonical Name They used to have all of that available when you signed up, but now they've sorta "hidden" it away. But I use a CJB.net domain here on my Xisto hosting account and it works just as well as a .com. Of course, it's blocked at school because it's a cjb.net domain, but it is still great! [N]F
  12. Best of luck to you! MS is usually very nice when it comes to "accidently" using a non-genuine version and you didn't know. I'd imagine they'd send you a new license which would be valid. I don't think they would need to send you a CD though. You can easily change the license for the machine. [N]F
  13. Yep! Hey, since it is MY server, I can use all the disk space and bandwidth in the world!! Actually an easier way is setting document root to /home/nightfox except then I can't really have multiple sites... Yep, I figured that... mmmm... DNS.... Thanks m^e! That would be great!! [N]F
  14. Well, a few years ago I never even knew what "Linux" was, let alone how powerful it is. It all started on a forum (well, a PHP-Nuke site I found) and this one user was helping me with something. He sent me the file as a .tar.gz file and I was like, wtf is that??!?! how do I open it?!? and then he repiled with "oops... I forgot that everyone doesn't use linux". After that, I googled Linux (this was also back when I was new to computers and was learning their full power... at this time I couldn't tell a graphics card from a NIC) and found out that it was a free and open source operating system. If my computer wasn't junk at the time and if I would have had broadband, I would have downloaded and installed it. It wasn't until I got signed up for a Novell/IBM Linux conference. That's when I got my first distro, SuSE Standard/Enterprise Server 8. When I installed it, I was impressed! Of course, the install didn't even last a week. But then later on (like a few years) I got broadband and my computer knowledge has GREATLY improved. I like SuSE but for some reason it won't install properly on the machine I have. But Fedora Core 5 works wonderfully! Last summer I was working with Fedora Core 4 for a "intranet" project for my school... you know, getting the whole server working and such. But I've tried everything from Fedora Core to Red Hat 9... But I'm stuck with Fedora Core 5. Now, if my laptop would install Linux, I'd have it on there too, but it doesn't so it runs MS Windoze... :(But ever since I moved to Linux, I've found the environment to be very adapting... if there is software you need, just open a terminal > yum install SOFTWARE-NAME > Enter > Downloads & Installs! No need to scavenge the web, download, run the installer, then have it ready for use... Plus, the way Microsoft has been getting lately, it's another reason to slap them in the face and move to Linux. There are no "upgrade fees" to upgrade your OS, there are no viruses, spyware or adware... It's a great world.[N]F
  15. Ok, for testing my knowledge, I got a free domain "floppydrives.cjb.net" and free DNS service at ZoneEdit.com. However, when you visit "floppydrives.cjb.net" you're taken to the document root of "/var/www/html" instead of where I'd like it to go: "/home/user/public_html"I think this is more of a web issue/server issue, so I apologize if you feel that this is in the wrong forum. If it is, could a mod move it to where they feel it should go? Thanks![N]F
  16. lol, yeah... well, now there's no reason to forget a semicolon anymore! Now sticking (well taped on) is a post-it (hot pink so it'll get my attention) that says "PHP: SEMICOLON!!"hehe... I'm just that good.[N]F
  17. I agree... it isn't one of those Linux OSes that you get all confused in. It's really quite simple. Though I don't like the default colour theme (too much brown). I wish I would have found Ubuntu back when I was getting new to Linux. [N]F
  18. Let me try to clear this up... I have my own network domain and the server is accessible from the Internet (duh). However, my user account on my server can only be accessed via http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (my network domain) ~username (which is my username on the server obviously). However, I'd like to be able to access my personal account on the server via it's own domain (free). I think there is some sort of DNS involved but I'm not sure... [N]F
  19. Yeah I wrote it... hence the missing semicolons! Looks like I need to bring back Mr. Post-It with the large giant semicolon drawn on it. Well, actually since I do a lot of programming on my laptop, I'll just use one of the smaller versions and tape it to the top of the screen. I don't know why, but I ALWAYS seem to forget the stupid semicolons. I guess it is the Visual Basic programming getting to me. Thanks for the help of a stupid semicolon!! [N]F
  20. In therory, my home server is setup just like a web hosting server. My user account has a web directory and yadda yadda. The only way to access it is http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ How do I get my user account to work with a domain (and it is going to be a cjb.net domain because I'm cheap like that, ) Thanks! [N]F
  21. I didn't even realize my browser updated until I checked the about box to see that it did! lol. That's EXACTLY what I like... updates and you don't even have to think about them! [N]F
  22. Update on the problem: Ok, I was checking the Linksys website to see if my router had a new firmware version. Yep it did! The last firmware, 1.00.6 was released in January if I remember correctly and the latest version, 1.00.9, was released May 16. I was browsing the change log like I normally do, just to see what (if anything) has been added and what has been fixed. The second to last thing at the bottom of the change log: - Resolves issue with slow internal loopback, i.e., accessing a local server through the WAN IP address So apparently this wasn't a host file issue, but rather a router issue. I've upgraded & tested. Works PERFECTLY and appears just as fast as if I was getting to it from 100 miles away! [N]F
  23. All web hosts usually have this problem. Sometimes it is more than defacing but a hacker gets into the server and just creates or deletes some accounts. Yep, you can't change your server username. The only way to change it is to delete your account and create it again. Usernames need to be 6 characters. So you can still use a brute force tool to associate a username with a password. There really isn't anything that can be done to prevent a hacking attempt. Just save your data. btw, I'm probably going after a degree in network security. I've read the books. [N]F
  24. I've been coding my own forum software and I'm almost finished to release a public preview BUT there's just one problem: My connect.php file! Every script that refrences it gives this error: Here's my connect.php file: <?php/*+| Codename: Summer Breeze Alpha 1| ========================================| | (c) 2006 Moonburst Technologies| http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/| ========================================| License Info: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/+| THIS SOFTWARE IS AN INTERNAL COPY AND IS NOT | LICENSED FOR USE. Can anyone else tell? I even modified the variable from $sqluser to $user but it didn't help. Thanks for any help! [N]F
  25. Thanks!! I'll look into all of that. It does look like what I'm after. I use MySQL, not Oracle. But thanks again!! [N]F
