Boosting Your Computers Speed! Using msconfig

Recommended Posts

UPDATED VERSION:

I know there are other totorials about this, but they were lacking the key features that could be used with msconfig. In this tutorial I will show you how to manually boost your computers overall performance and boost-speed

NOTE: This could cause damage to your computer or failure to boot if done improperly so plz listen closely!

First off start at the destop of your computer. Click Start>Run.

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png

This should Bring up a bar where you can enter in commands to bring up the windows console. In this bar enter in "msconfig" (without quotes).

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png

Next you will see the System Configuration Window pop up. Now this is very important! Do not start clicking random things to boost your computers speed! We are not there YET! Failure to listen could cause serious damage.

Ok, time to boost your computers overall performance! As you know many programs run in the backround of your computer. In some cases these programs that you dont even know that you are running in the backround can be big system hogs. They use up uneccessary memory, witch decreases your computer's speed. Now, it might not be noticibal now. But just wait until your computer gets more and more and more software. This will, in the long run, slow your computer down. Just click the services tab and now we wil have to edit some of our choices here from the list of programs.

Next click hide all microsoft services. You dont really want to mess with microsoft's services becuase you really cant tell witch one is a good or bad program. I recomend leaving that alone, but if you want to you can make a restore point on your computer and mess around. But I really dont recomend that! :P.

Now we have a list of programs that arent microsoft related, if you know the programs you need simply leave them clicked, otherwise disable all the programs that you dont need! after you unclick the programs you dont need or feel that arent neccessary please click apply, but done exit yet we still got more to do! Refer to the image if you are unsure witch programs to disable/enable.

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png

Next open the startup window, here we will configure witch programs will load when window logs on.

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png

Now scroll to the bottom of the list and start clicking! Make shure again, that any microsoft programs you know of are NOT disabled (atleast microsoft programs of importance). Its hard to tell witch programs are important and arent important so if you dont know simply leave it enabled! ;)

Now scroll up, because there is quite a bit of programs on the list. I disabled programs such as quicktime, AOL, iTunes, and some creative programs, NOT the drivers!. You dont need those programs and they hog quite a bit of system resources.

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png

Next hit apply and click the close button! You are basically done now! YAY! :)

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png

Now Restart your computer and HAVE SOME FUN!

Also here are some more good tips that will help boost your computer:

1. always defrag ur hardisk after installing a new programs.

2. try to install the programs such as registry fix, ram cleaner and CCleaner.

3. change ur display setting by turning off ur desktop background and screen saver.

5. delete ur desktop icon.

6. tweak ur bios setting.

7. always scan for virus.

Now you have a healthyier computer! :D !!!!! I really hope this helped and if this isnt new information to you all, I apologize. I just wanted to give you guys/gals a more clear definition of what to do and what not to do with msconfig. Thanks, I really hoped this helped and cleared some things up.

Great. My computer's speed boosted too! I had lots of things I didn't even know about that boosted my speed.

But an easier way to do the same thing is to download and install a small utility called Startup Control Panel. It will reside in your Windows Control Panel and allow you control over programs that run on system start up. I also recommend Startup Monitorby the same author, which will alert you when a program attempts to give itself permission to run at startup.

Another thing you can do, while your PC is running, is hit CONTROL, ALT, DELETE to pull up the Task Manager. Take a look at both the Applications tab and the Processes tab. Make sure you don't have any odd programs running there. In the Processes tab, you can gohere
and look up each process you see running on your Task Manager for an explanation of what the process is. The web page is not all inclusive, of course, so you might find some processes in your Task Manager that aren't listed on the web page. The page is arranged alphabetically so just click the icon of the first letter of the process and see if it is in the list. Keep in mind that some viruses and spyware/adware try to trick you by using legitimate process names, so if you see a process running in your Task Manager, there may be more than one listing for it on the web page. But I just mentioned this as an add-on to his tutorial.

I have done this many times to stop un-wanted programs from starting up. It helps a lot. One other thing that msconfig is useful for is disabling viruses. If you have a virus on your computer, it's setup to automatically start with windows and the virus will be in the start-up program list or under services. Just like what savge17 said, you have to be careful and not disable things that need to be running otherwise bad things will happen. I have had issues with viruses before and this is one easy way to stop them.... and then let your anti-virus do its work :)xJedix

Yea the ctrl+alt+delete thing really doe shelp, on that one though you have to really know what you are doing. One wrong click and its over. Just be carefull and ull be fine ;) another thing, this is a super-duper mini tutorial within a tutorial thingy. Is cleaning your computer, run disk-cleaner disk-dfrag, clean your destop of unecessary files. And I like to always give my computer a break. I dont leave my computer on when unecessary shut shut her down and give her some rest, if you know what I mean :).

Very nice tutorial. I just used it myself because my laptop has been a bit slow lately and it seems to have helped. I figured as long as I was doing that I mine as well clean it up a bit. So I uninstalled some programs I don't need anymore and deleted old, and unimportant files to clean up some space. Now I just gotta defrag it later today and I'll be good to go. I have been annoyed with all the programs starting up when my computer started and now they are finally gone. Thanks a lot.

Defragging is awesome, REMEMBER though that any of those Defrag programs you see that proclaim to boost your comps speed... dont use them. I used to have http://www.condusiv.com/ but, my computer crashed and I had to re-format. So i tried it again with deskkeeper and it crashed a second time. So i had to re-format twice in a row. Now my third time I used the default de-fragger that came with windows, it hasnt crashed since........ so make a good choice, default is usually better. Learn from experiance :P
