I Hate Smokers 2nd hand smoke

Recommended Posts

Well what an interesting thread, especially considering how the smoking debate has pretty much been hashed out a thousand times. I am not a smoker, I have never been a smoker, I do not hate smokers. I live in Ontario (that's in Canada btw), and here they are talking about banning smoking in public places across the country, guess what I support that idea. I think if you want to smoke in your own home or on your own property so be it, if you want to smoke in my home though, you had better go outside, and if you want to smoke in a restaurant, same thing. One poster implied that any limitations on smoking was an infringement on the rights of smokers. I say that is nonsense, I would agree however that if you outright banned it everywhere including in a person's own home then yes it is an infringment of rights and there is no way I would support that. But I hasten to add that smoking is not a right, it is something people do that destroys thier own bodies, and as such the anti smoking push should continue to urge people NOT to smoke. In my province there is a law forcing all cigaratte producers to place warning labels on the packages that cover a good portion of the packaging, and the lables are not simple "Smoking is hazardous to your health" but graphic images showing what can happen due to smoking. I think that the labels are a great idea, and they do help prevent people from picking up the habbit, although it is questionable as to the effect it has on smokers. The poster who was so livid about smokers rights posed a question which compared smoking to eating at McDonalds, I say we should be telling people not to eat at McDonalds, again don't ban it, but force fast food chains to put warning labels on anything with over x% fat with graphic pictures showing what can happen to morbidly obese people. This would serve a dual purpose, stop people from eating too much fat content, and force fast food chains to produce food with lower fat content so that they don't have to place labels on thier food packaging.

FACT: Smoking is bad for your health, whether you are the smoker or someone vaguely near them.

Both of my parents used to smoke. OK, not a huge amount a day, but they did smoke, and it was always near me and my brother and sister, especially when we were eating. I think it is in Canada (correct me if I'm wrong) that cigarette packets have images of what happens to you when you smoke, e.g lung cancer. After 14 and a half years of living in a smoke filled environment and trying to speak to my parents I gave up. I downloaded some of those images, got them blown up to A3 size and stuck them round the house. Finally my Dad has quit smoking. I feel better, my brother and sister feel better, but most of all, he feels better. My Mum, on the other hand, still hasn't given up smoking. Even telling her blatently...

"Look, you are killing your kids. Are you really that uncaring, that, after years of bringing us up, you are willing to kill us by making us breathe your smoke? How are you going to feel if we all die of lung cancer at 25?"

...she still won't give up. It isn't that she can't give up, she just refuses to read any of the books or websites or phone any of the helplines.

I hate people smoking in public places. You want to kill yourself? Fine, just don't murder everyone else in this restaurant while you're at it. It may seem horrible, but its true. Its even worse when smokers say, "Oh you're X feet away, you're fine.", oblivious to the fact that they have a filter to take out the harmful things. If it is really necessary I will wear a gas mask when going out to avoid a premature death.

I agree that it can be difficult

Gentle persuasion has failed to get most people to give up, so the government should at least try shock tactics. Any why wont the government do this, or enforce a ban? They get billions in taxes every year from cigarettes and tobacco which they don't want to give up.

Yes, it's true. Alot of smokers think they can't do it, so they don't even try. Smoking is usually cause by people in pressure. Kids should learn about smoking in school or something.

Well, in Houston, our mayor has banned smoking in restaurants, so I think they're trying.

Natural drugs, should also not be legalized, unless given out by doctors. Drugs does harm to people. It could harm someone who is innocent. Someone taking drugs would go high and would harm an innocent man.

Then you probably support making Alcohol illegal too, right?

I dont hate them as far as they behave properly. Everyone need to understand that most of the time smokers wanted to stop, but they just cant. It is also the same as to drug addict who realize he is living like a trash, but there's not much they can do. They need help.It is crystal clear that smoking is bad for you and for everyone else. Maybe not now, but someday smokers will regret their habbit in the past. The best policy is that to stay away from doing so.

I personally don't like smokers though I know people that do. Smoke smells so bad and is really bad for the smoker and the people around him that breathe. I think its fine if poeple want to kill themselfs by smoking but they shouldn't indanger other peoples health/lifes by smoking. Its kind of funny though. Im from Minnesota and in my city they have a smoking ban in public restaurants. So people that smoke have to go outside to smoke which is perfectly fine with me. It keeps the restaurants and bars cleaner and then when I go there, I don't come home smelling of crap. I think its awsome that the government did this. Though most smokers hate the government now but oh well. :P

I honestly don't like smokers. Both my parents smoke and I'm forced to breathe it. Because of that, my sense of smell is not as great as it should be. I'm sure that most of you can agree with me that if someone decides to smoke, they shouldn't do it to where it harms us nonsmokers. As much as I believe they have the right to ruin their own lives, they don't have the right to ruin mine!

Alcohol does distort judgment and if you were to ban it I'm sure you'd see a direct correlation between it and a lack of deaths from drunk driving and possibly crimes of a violent nature as well. That is however that a ban could be successful in preventing the sale and distribution of alcohol. I'd certainly like to see such a ban.

However, I don't think it's entirely in the same boat as smoking since with smoking you automatically endanger all in the immediate vicinity whereas alcohol depends on actions you can take after being under the influence of it. Kind of direct vs. indirect, smoking directly attacks all those in the area while alcohol might hurt people indirectly but you're not absolutely exposed to danger unless another event occurs.

true that 1 cig doesn't kill you but if you doing it to the point where 5-10 packs a day it will kill you and the people around you, you be surprised whats in the cigs, also the other problem is that its the biggest money maker in the world, thus many countries rely on people smoking to run the government, look at the ads during 60's, 70's, and 80's and tc shows and movies, smoking is never going to die out as long as people keep on making them.

Recently I read the above article on Yahoo news about how babies are swimming in vats of pollutants before ever being born. A lot of women were utterly shocked to see what was within them, chemicals like PCB's that were banned decades ago, flame retardant chemicals, exhaust fumes, etc... I don't think people truly realize just what is going into their bodies...

I don't hate smokers, only those who smoke to fit in or because they think it's cool.

I think I actually need a cigarette right now. I don't smoke smoke but I feel like ruining my life and since they say a stick of cigarette takes off 3 days of your life then I really need one. :P

leiaah, the whole topic was started not over cigarettes as far as health risks to the users, I think most people would agree that's their business. It's those who smoke in public areas and make it other people's business by endangering those around them that people seem to have a problem with.

Ruining your life is one thing but endangering the lives of unwilling people around you is an entirely different thing. If you do smoke hopefully you do so away from where people can breathe it in.

Well, all I can say that smoking is really bad for health, your organism is getting lot of poison, noto to mention your skin looks unhealthy. Second hand smoking is something that non-smokers shouldn't get. But it is not wise to say that all of smokers are not respecting rules here. SOme of them are really true fanatics as some non-smokers are.Ok, it would be nice to get some true law that will draw lines what is permitted and what is not. But looking to what we do to nature, all of poison that is in the air all the time, electromagnettic poluttion, poisons that are used for agrocultur, it is all coming back to us thru the air, water... . So smoker are just 1% of all poisons that are around us, alot of them are invisible and we are unaware all of dangerous things.
