  1. So far in my 8 years of IIT experience, I have come across most brands of laptops. Personally I have witnessed IBM/Lenovo take allot of abuse but still carry on working. The one IT company i worked for long ago had issued a IBM T22 to my then boss. Which he totally abused and dropped. the case was cracked, after he left I inherited his laptop and carried on using it, during my time there for the next 4 years. It never gave me any problems and when i left it was still working. Here are some of the points I have noticed with IBM laptops. They are designed with a very effective cooling system and stay cool, unlike some other laptops that overcompensated with huge noisy fans. 2 Types of mouse 1 on the keyboard and a touch pad (I really hate the touch pad mouse that most laptops have) Built in Keyboard light Very good driver support under linux for wireless / Sound Volume controls and Function keys Battery life is reasonable Hardware support is easily available.
  2. Hi, i looked at your logo, and I will say that i liked it quite a bit. I agree with saying it looks simple and not over the top. As for the logo on the side, the three blocks on top of the circle. It also kinda looks like a badge or shield, something that shows you are proud of DiG pc. That is the impression it gives... I also suspect that when you make business cards your logo will stand out a bit more thanks to the shield on the left, So do not remove the shield. It rocks! However, there is one thing about your entire logo i don't like. It is the shade of green you are using, It seems to make your logo look dull, perhaps a brighter more limy green would look better. Im no expert a graphic design so take my advice with a pinch of salt.
  3. @user681 : What version of ubuntu are you trying to install ? is it the latest version with more hardware support than a previous older version? uname -a You seem like you want answers to your problems now. The truth being Linux is originally designed for engineers in mind, people who love troubleshooting and have the patience to do so. If me/you either do not have the time or patience to battle with the problems a Linux distribution gives, Then do not use it. Your friend who convinced you to use Linux sounds like a idiot to say the least. If he is so high on selling Linux to other people at least he should help you install it and make sure everything works. For now I would recommend is try other distro, or make sure you are using the latest version of the distro. Or get your friend to come and fix your problems. If all that fails go back to windows and wait a while and try again in a year or so , by then their might be better support for your current hardware. A Tip for the future when you go buy new hardware, take the latest live cd with and test to see if it works on that set of hardware before you buy new hardware. Good hardware should have support in Linux already ensuring that everything works out of the box flawlessly.
  4. When i first saw the name I was also kinda suspicious, expecting it to be some kind of portal site to some spam site selling cheap porn or Viagra. So at some stage there was a 50/50 chance that i would have avoided Xisto based on just the name. Anyhow i landed up here and soon realized it is not as bad as the name sounds. Interestingly enough I did go through all the other trap1-16 domains to see what else is there. But non of them had a active decent working site. It Goes to show that the founders/founder of Xisto had to do allot of hard work to get where they are today. One upside i see from the name is that it is rather short and easy to remember. Sites that end up in my bookmarks cause their names are too long to remember, tend to usually get lost within the bookmarks or when the computer gets reloaded.
  5. Hi there, You should make sure that you are both sexually compatible, meaning you might not be into threesomes or w/e while he is. If he is asking you very sexual questions then that is a sure sign that he is very interested in you at least sexually. The fact that he called you while he was away in the army surely means he missed you at the time and probably cares about you. If there is one thing life has taught me , it is that life is too short to be afraid of getting hurt. I think you should seriously tell him what you want in plain English while looking him in the eyes. Wish you all the best ;-)
  6. I have used both Ubuntu Jaunty and the Kubuntu version on two diffrent laptops. My Laptop is an IBM T43 and the other laptop was a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo. With both laptop's the hardware was picked up automatically and everything seemed to work. But i have to admit that i was not happy with either of these distro's after using them each for about 4 months my opinion is that they are both slow, and crash far too often, at least on my hardware. The other day i tried a new version of PCLinux os and I was amazed at the snappiness of it. I also tried Knoppix and i have decided to stick to knoppix based on it's speed and stability. I decided to keep pclinuxos as a second boot option because it is just as good as knoppix. My question to previous and current ubuntu users, did you also experience some system freezing/crashing while using ubuntu?
  7. Hey web-designer, Thank you for the info i do find it pretty useful. Especially the part of your cheat sheet that contains all three: External Style sheet , Internal and Inline style. This is useful to know and in my experience most cheat sheets I have come across lacks this info. Perhaps in your part two, you can add something about the background properties and background position as i use them allot. If you can it would also be nice if you can mention what level of css ie css1 ,2 or 3 your cheat sheet is addressing. Keep up the good work ;-) I don't think you need to worry about people not liking your post. Because it is the end of year most people are spending time with family/friends and aren't so active on the forum now. It's just.... HAPPY NEW Year everyone!!!!!
  8. Welcome to Xisto forums Logical, I can see you already signed up for your xisto account. Thus you will already be earning cents for quality posts. Short one line posts won't help much to earn cents. Try to post longer posts and then you'll see how easy the cents roll in. Once you have 100 cents it will get transfered to your xisto account where you can purchase stuff like domain names or hosting packages. The cheapest hosting package costs just under $2. It costs just under $10 for a domain name for 12 months. Avoid spamming and plagiarism, if you quote something put it in the proper quote boxes provided when you create a post. Remember, you can go into negative cents here in Xisto forums by breaking rules or being inactive. Also when you or a admin / mod edit your post it will be recalculated and cents will be added or deducted from your account. I suggest you edit your introduction post and tell us a bit more about your self, this should earn you more cents. Apparently choosing a proper topic name and description for your post also counts to how much you earn. I think "Rawr Boo [lol]" as a topic is awesome but i don't know if the point system here will agree with us.
  9. Currently, I use a Sony Ericsson k550 to connect to the Internet via a 3g network. I have tried it in recent versions of ubuntu , knoppix and PCLinux, every time it worked by just plugging it in. I didn't require to search and install any additional drivers at all. I would definitely recommend you get your hands on a sony Ericsson k550 because you don't need any drivers as they are already built into linux!. In my opinion Sony Ericsson makes decent phones that are fast , usable and stable. Unlike LG and Nokia phones which i have witnessed to be very annoying unstable and slow phones that crash often from just normal user operating the phone itself, never mind trying to share a Internet connection with one of those phones. I hope this helps you :-)
  10. Okay, now that i am on holiday and have a little bit of free time, i am searching for a nice game to play. But!!!! Wait... It's not so easy... I have some stringent requirements. Firstly, I use Linux on my laptop. Secondly, My laptop hardware has no 3d graphics support. So , that should narrow it down a lot. A bit about my gaming history... I used to love playing the xcom games from the first one UFO - enemy unknown and right up to xcom Apocalypse. In my opinion the xcom games where the best games i ever played. But unfortunately I have had trouble finding similar games since i finished playing through the xcom series. I am aware that there is a open source 'rebirth' of a xcom type game called ufo alien invasion . The game has been in development for a couple of years now and requires 3d hardware support to work. If anyone was a fan of the old xcom games I could recommend this as I have played it. One sad part is that the developers can't make terrain breakable with the current game engine they are using unless they get the right programmer to help them modify the game engine. So unlike the original xcom, if you blow up a house, it won't collapse and also you can create giant craters in the side of mountains with HE. Other games i have enjoyed playing was Dungeon keeper 1 and 2 and Dark Reign. Some Linux games i have tried recently: Freecraft - was fun for a little while, the whole medieval theme is not really what i am looking for. Glest - The game worked well on my laptop even without 3d support the game AI is also insanely difficult. but it is also medieval themed. Actually i think the AI is freaking impossible. So if you think know of a real time strategy game that matches my requirements I would really appreciate if anyone could help me out. Or if you are an old xcom fan, Please feel free to share with everyone what exactly it is about the xcom series that you the enjoyed most.
  11. I can recall happily playing dungeon keeper 1 and 2 back when i was still in school. It is truly a pity that, they never made a dungeon keeper 3. Recently, as in about a year ago i managed to find and download the game from abandon ware a day before they took it down again. I don't know if it's up there anymore but both of them are well worth playing if you haven't played them before, providing you can get your hands on a legal copy of course. Unfortunately the game is as old as dos and crashes sometimes so if you do play it, remember to save often.
  12. That right there is the lamest, most selfish excuse ever! To me it sounds like she is leading you on for a quick bit of fun but she really feels nothing for you, you are replaceable / have already by the next jock she meets at the next nightclub. If you really love someone you will make time for them even in your last year of university. Life is busy but it's too short for you to put up with someone who doesn't really care about you. Wish you all the best with that!
  13. I chose to switch to Linux in 2003 it has been a long road since then. Linux has become somewhat softer on newbies but the truth is you still need to be willing to sacrifice time to troubleshoot issues in Linux. Never give up it pays off in the end. I don't recommend Linux for everyone but there has been times i have installed it on a newbies laptop since he got tired of all the virus's and all he wanted to do is surf the Internet and edit office documents. It's also easier to install Linux since it automatically picks up drivers, whereas windows you have to go search/ download hardware drivers. So now it's just a matter of installing linux and then windows in vbox , skip the whole driver install process ;-)Linux is definitely growing especially since the Vista disaster and i am glad to see this poll shows that most people here are already use it.
  14. My job title is Technical Manager, Yet i do allot of similar things that you do this could include things like plumbing, changing light fittings , sound engineering, website maintenance, It administrator, desktop support to generator maintenance Basically anything that breaks or has todo with technology will come past me. At one of my previous jobs my title was 'Field Service Engineer' for a IT company , basically a computer/IT technician. I think the term engineer is very broad just like the term doctor is broad. One can study to become a doctor in fields like physics and hold the title doctor yet they aren't the same as your local doctor that you go visit in a hospital. If you have to 'engineer'/build solutions where you work , then you are busy engineering an solution. I think If you are engineering then your job title should include engineering in it. Weather you studied for it or not.
  15. Hello mangaa, Welcome to Xisto forum You earn mycent for posting quality posts that contributes to the forum, i earned my first dollar from posting 5 decent posts. (about the same length as this one) In order to start earning my cents you need to sign up at Xisto - Support.com/billing/ with the same email address that you used to sign up at Xisto forums. After a couple of hours your accounts will be linked automatically and your mycents earned will appear under your avatar. The cheapest hosting package works out to about 2 dollars a month. For every 100 cents you earn , 1 dollar gets credited to your Xisto account. As far as i understand you cannot lose dollars that have been transfered to your xisto account however you can go into negative mycents here in the Xisto forums by being inactive, spamming or being guilty of plagiarism.
  16. Greetings Wayne, Thank you for telling us a bit about yourself, I'm sure you'll fit right in here.I only joined recently myself , but as far as i can tell earning my cents seems fairly easy.. it's worth going through all the documentation and rules. But you can also ask questions everyone here is friendly and helpful. So, Welcome to Xisto forums!
  17. I still recall when i was younger and in school I had this crush on a really sweet girl, whom i think also liked me. The kind of crush where i had butterflys in my stomache when we made eye contact or touched. But i never had the guts to ask her out and after a few months i left that school and i never saw her again. For several years since then i had regretted not acting on my feelings towards her and kept on wondering what could have been, if only i had asked her out and she said yes. Today im over it but i had learn t a valuable lesson out of this, The lesson is life is too short to be scared of getting hurt/rejected, you might not get another chance again and regret living with 'not knowing' for a very long painful time... I do think this is a unusual situation to be in, and it could be real love. If your friend don't play this right he might regret not trying this for the rest of his life. Rather try and fail than not try and wonder forever, cause that just hurts more.
  18. Welcome to the forums shippingint Tell us a bit more about yourself , such as your skills and hobbies etc. Also what brought you to Xisto ? Myself i joined recently, i was interested in getting hosted which would hopefully happen as soon as i earned enough mycents by contributing to the forums with long detailed posts. If you want to earn mycents make sure you register at https://support.xisto.com/ with the same email address that you used to register at this forum and after a few hours your accounts will be linked so that you can start earning mycents.
  19. I still have a free.co.nr domain that draws the content from freewebs , i must have created the account in 2003 and it is still there!Ja , it's true they have no sql support and they stick a few small adverts at the bottom of your page. But at least their servers are reasonable in speed most of the time. It's great for a static html page.
  20. Someone mentioned clamwin, and I would just like to add my experience with clamwin, Clamwin is a very slow but thorough scanner. But there is a major problem with it , it doesn't have a built in real-time scanner, There maybe some ad-don program somewhere on the Internet for clamwin to turn it into a real time scanner.Personally I would only use clamav on a linux server to scan emails and samba shares. If im into any kind of serious business i would purchase either nod32 or kaspersky. Nod32 having smaller definitions and use the least amount of resources. I rarely use windows but when i do use windows I run it in sun virtual box, therefore if i suspect an infection i can always revert to a good snapshot. ;-)Good day to you!
  21. Unlike most chat clients, Gmail makes use of the jabber protocol that is open source and free. Almost all the other chat clients that i can think of use of their own in house protocol and forces you to install their chat software to enable one to use their network. Also google docs has made my life allot easier at times when i had no access to office but only the Internet. Or when i wanted to share edit a document/spreadsheet over the Internet.
  22. I am beginning to wonder why there are so many old threads here. Many a times i read something thinking it was posted recently but then only notice that it has been like over a year ago sometimes five or six years!!. I can only imagine that it would become annoying for the original poster , posting this a year ago and today being married to this guy or an other guy and still having this post coming up. Please tell me if i am wrong or if anyone doesn't agree with me but i think some kind of archiving should be in place.
  23. Greetings and welcome to Xisto I'm new here too, i only joined very recently but I was able to make one us dollar with only five posts. The forum is quite large and finding sub forums that consists of your particular interests, to post in, should be fairly easy. You mention that you are going for paid hosting after trying Xisto, from my point of view trap 17 is already paid hosting because you pay with your time by participating in the Xisto forums. And at the end of the day time is money! Good day to you!
  24. Welcome to the forum, I also joined recently , so far i can say i only had made five posts so far and already earned $1 us dollar for it. Hopefully it stays this easy to earn cents. A big plus is that the forum is already very large and it seems that there must be at least a couple of sub forums that any one person could post to. So even all the other free hosts you tested you could use to your gain and post reviews about them to earn some cents Good day to you!
  25. I used to play Eternal Lands about three years ago. It is an awesome game,The only reason I stopped playing was because it was too addictive and time consuming. For me It worked in windows xp and Suse Linux for at the time I played it. At the moment the game is about 50 mb in size to download. If i recall correctly the game was mostly made by 1 guy and his wife and then put on line and since then it has grown to what it is today. It is free and well worth checking out. http://www.eternal-lands.com/
