  1. I do not wish to upset you humhaiking, but it doesn't sound to me like you relationship was meant to be.You must try and move on. Go out with friends, meet new people, take up a new hobby if you have to but forget about her. There is many more women in the world, and definetely a few of them will be a better match for you. Don't necessarily look for a new love. There is nothing wrong with a strong and solid friendship. It is very much possible to love again after heart-break. Although my circumstances were hugely differrent, I sai 'never again' once. And now I'm engaged and planning a wedding with my very lovely man and our three little monsters. You will find soneone new, just give it time...
  2. I happen to be a believer in God. But trust me when I say that to try and convert him is the worst thing you can do. I was force-fed Christianity as a child and I very quickly rebelled. The path to believing from then was a long and tortuous one.Be a friend, and help him through praying and being a listening ear. Don't preach to him, but support him .And if he is a true friend, he will be interested when his life starts sorting itself out with your help.My own prayers will join with yours whenever possible...
  3. XAMPP actually includes Apache, as well as MySQL, PHP and Perl. It is quite easy to install (after all I've done it, even if I probably don't use it to its full power). And yes it is a web server.Personally, I'm not a great blogger or blog user. But I think that posting once every other day should do it. As you said, not too often but often enough.I think it is always healthy to present every sides of an argument, so I would go ahead and invite skeptics as well. Just make sure that any posting rules clearly states that there should be no shouting and arguments should be well presented and supported by evidence or something like that. Hopefully, it will encourage everyone to think through their posts... And ultimately, you can always bar those that really can't be bothered to make their case properly.Hope this helps!
  4. I am just starting up when it comes to developping, but here is what I think I know. Xampp is if you want to build your website on your computer before you put it on the Internet. It will let you run php, mysql and more, and you will be able to see your site just as it would look on the net.Never heard of Aptana, but if you're looking for free tools to build a site, try KompoZer. It does both WYSIWYG and source code editing, like Dreamweaver.Back to the subject of this topic, I think that your idea with the picture would be a great way to get people back again and again on your site - as they come back to see if they were right, then probably go on to try again with the new pictures.I'm sure psychic phenomenon are real but I've never been bother to really study them. If you can find these people who are interested, there is no reason why you can't make money. Sign up for the Amazon affiliate program and recommend books on your site about psychic phenomenon and learning psychic powers. I'm sure there must be a few good ebooks around as well (I haven't go one yet, but if I decide to publish one, I'll let you know.) And if your site is 'sticky' enough, you might well be able to charge a subscription fee.Just a few ideas...
  5. I like anime. Don't really have the time to stay up to date anymore, but I can very well remember my favourite ones... Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cardcaptor Sakura, Saint Seiya, Oh my Goddess.I also grew up with Dragonball and Sailor Moon but I definitely prefer the mangas to the anime for these two, less repetition...But my favourite one was and still is Neon Genesis Evangelion. Definitely something I would not let my children watch until they are 15 or over, but the story is well crafted, the animation superb, and I heard (don't know if it's true) that the characters were used as examples in psychology classes in JapanAs for getting hooked, anime are not the only thing. My partner moans and moans every night if I even suggest missing Hollyoaks, Emmerdale, Coronation Street and/or Eastenders in favour of watching the news or a cartoon for the kid.You can't see the point in watching anime and getting hooked, Nameless_. Same here when it comes to soap operas. But then I guess everyone IS different
  6. I think that the future will come the day the scientists working on the stuff free their minds from the constraints of materialism. They have, and so have we, been taught that the world is made of matter, when quantum physics proved it is made up of energy. When that barrier is finally broken, I expect we will see many technological imporvements to our lives, maybe even to rival that of the past 50-100 last years. As to make the human race better, as in good, I think we can start now, by doing what the late Michael Jackson had been saying for decades:'I'm starting with the man in the mirror.'
  7. If you actually WANT to use the text into Word, then copy and paste is the simplest thing to do, although not quite legal when it comes to copyright...Otherwise try using pdf995 pdfedit995. They are free programs that let's you create and edit pdf files. I haven't had the chance of trying them out yet, but they come recommend by both my printers, Anthony Rowe and Printondemand-Worldwide, as tool enabling the creation of high quality, industry-standard pdf files.Hope this helps.
  8. It sounds like a good beginning! One thing that niggles at me is that I don't think Shiori would fall asleep while fetching water for her brother. As tired as she is, she would make her way back to him before dropping. If you need her out of the way because something happens that changes her brother and some/all of the villagers - as it seems from her brother's actions when they find each other - then I suggest that some of the villagers, along with Shiori, are sent ahead to scout for a safe path out of the forest, where the demons are roaming I assume. As for what it should be about, it sounds good for a tale of conflict and how it affects people. The focus of the story will come out of the sub-genre. A drama will concentrate on Shiori and Kato, and how they cope. An adventure will focus on the fights they get into to survive. Of course, one doesn't exclude the other.I suppose a good way of writing on from here would be to discover that the demons actually work for someone - another bigger demon or more spookily a human - and Shiori decide to avenge her parents by taking them down. Since we are in the realm of fantasy, Shiori could have some as yet undiscovered magic. The bad guys could know about that or not. One way or the other, she could discover them, either because she is know a teenager and this is usually when powers start to manifest or because of a traumatic event freeing them, say Kato being kidnapped or the death of another person that is close to Shiori.Just a few ideas
  9. If you like science fiction, I will suggest Anne McCaffrey. She is a very good and prolific writer, with over 80 books to her name (some co-written with others). This would probably keep you occupied for a few months.I particularly reccomend the Dragonriders of Pern and the Tower and the Hive series. If you are looking for non-fiction that will open your mind to new possibilities, I can recommend Time Storms, by Jenny Randles, and the Atlantis Blueprint, by Rand Flem-Ath and Colin Wilson. The first discuss the reality of time storms and quantum physics, the second advances a few interesting theories about the origins of civilisation.Hope you like it all!
  10. I'm sure that there is life on other planets. Whether it is intelligent life, that's totally different. We humans are a result of sheer dumb luck. The odds were against us, and the survival rate of our species at this moment in time may not be so very high.So could the accident have happen twice? Maybe, but the odds are not very high that both our species will survive in our huge universe long enough to discover one another.
  11. Here are a few more: PDF creator: PrimoPDF PDF995 Graphic software: GIMP FTP Software: FileZilla Web design software: KompoZer And what's best, most of them can be found both in normal version for your computer, and in PortableApps version for your USB memory key...
  12. You might also be charged with murder, rayzoredge, if you actually managed it somehow!I agree with rob86 and Nameless_. There's a big difference between saying it, maybe in the heat of the moment, and actually planning to do it. And so there's should be!
  13. It depends what your invention/innovation is!I would say talk to high placed people who might be interested in licensing whatever it is you have created and let them do the selling for you.If you want to sell the thing yourself, marketing it would really depend on what the thing is, its target market (who's gonna buy it) and its price...
  14. I tend to think that Arya will be the new Rider. She already know pretty much everything she would need to know, preventing what could be a boring repetition of the training phase. Also, the new Rider may have to stand in alone against Galbatorix, and so will have to already know gramarye back to front, as well as knowing how to fight. Arya fits the profile perfectly... And dragons only hatch for those they are destined for, or not at all!And remember that, although some of us older folks like the books, it is still classified as children's literature, and therefore will probably finish with some kind of happy ending. Arya, Eragon, Saphira, and the new dragon flying off and living happily ever after fits the bill..
  15. My favourite authors are Anne McCaffrey, and now her son Todd, JRR Tolkien and JK Rowling. There are many more that I like: Terry Pratchett, Stephen King, David Eddings Raymond Feist, Chris Wood. But those above are the master of my home library.
  16. I guess I am lucky.I am on the 3 pay-as-you-go network and have a Skype phone. I get 150Mb of free Internet usage each time I top up, free Skype calls, and I think the charge for usage after those 150Mb is ?1 per Mb.I can't go on every websites, because of the limitations of my phone, but I think it's not too bad.
  17. I have just started my own publishing business.I have been a writer for nearly all of my life - started at 7 right after I got hooked on reading. After winning competitions and having a few articles published but without any luck for my books, I wantewd to self-publish but was very put off by the prices. Now I've decided to actually publish work, and not only my own...It is actually quite a lot tougher than I thought. I know how to write and edit- mostly - but all the work that goes on during pre-press, like cover designing and layouts, and all the marketing side of it, I had to learn and both are still quite strange and scary for me.But I wouldn't give it up, even if I'm not really making lots of money out of it. I love being my own boss!
  18. I agree with CrazyRob: word of mouth is best. But in order for this to work, you must put your name out there.Leaflets are good. They can be created cheaply enough and still look good. Sure they often get straight to the bin, but many people still read it before they throw it away and so know of your name...If you are web designing, why not create yourself a web portfolio. A place on the net for your potential customers to see what you can do.Many local business directories are coming up, both online and offline. And some do not charge to get listed with them. Don't forget to claim your free standard entry in the yellow pages either. This is still used by those who can't access a computer and they also have a website for those who are connected. If you do decide to target small businesses, I would say that your best bet is to contact your local Business Link and ask them of networking events in your area. Print some business cards and distribute them there. This way many business people will know of you and what you do.Otherwise try eLance. They always have lots of people looking for web designer. However, competition can be quite fierce and definitely drive the prices down. Google Adwords is good, but many big companies use it, and consequently prices can go up very quickly. However, it does put your name out there as well. So my advice is use with caution.Hope this all helps
  19. I will probably make myself impopular with this post, but these are my opinions. Feel free to disagree.I believe that monitoring these families that have known and important problems with violence, alcohol and drugs may be a good idea. The system as it is - with overworked and some plain stupid social workers - is clearly not working. If it was, Baby Peter would not have been tortured to death by his mother's new boyfriend. And children learn by experience. Then go on to repeat this during their adult lives. This is how cycles of violence and drug abuses keep on spinning. Waiting until they are in turn charged with the same offences their parents committed in not a good idea! There must be a better way than 24-7 CCTV surveillance. But if it helps saving children from a life of crime, violence and/or drugs, I say do it.I love the human rights. I am all for it. But in France, we have a saying:Your own personal rights stop where that of others begin. If people with these problems are putting others at risks through their behaviours, if they are limiting the rights of others to feel safe and to actually be safe, then something should be done to prevent them from doing so, even if it means restricting their own rights. We live in societies, and whether our societies are based on capitalism, socialism or religions, the rights of the many should prevails on that of individuals.
  20. I cannot remember when exactly, but a couple of years ago I have read an article in a UK science magazine saying that light waves can be at two places at once, and so teleport from one place to another. It obviously doesn't happen naturally but it can be forced in a lab. At the smallest point known to us, the universe is actually made of of waves. These waves all together form particles (the smallest unit of matter), which in turn form atoms, which form the desk and computers in front of us.But energy waves do not only form matter. They are also present in light for example. Some also beliveve - as I do - that consciousness is an energy wave, the one that is the basis of everything around us, reality as a whole. So Faster Than Light travel for humans would involve finding a way to 'reduce' us to our basic energy wave self, transfport the waves to their destination and then reconstruct us, preferably in the right order Seems improbable I know, but then again...
  21. Time is relative because we make it so. Like kleong pointed out, time will seem to go much faster when you enjoy yourself than when you're bored. Even 'atomic time' is related to our perception of it, to our need to measure time as accurately as possible without taking into account any other factors that might slow it down or speed it up (relatively speaking). But ultimately time is only an invention of our mind, to fix our consciousness in the here and now... Read Time Storms, by Jenny Randles. I think she makes a pretty good case of it, amongst other things.
  22. I have been looking for a free host for quite some time now. Byet and Trap 17 made it to the top 10. I actually tried signing up with Byet today, but couldn't do it because I'm using Internet Explorer.I know it may not be the best browser, but I like it and I'm no about to change it just to get free hosting. So I came here instead!I do like posting in forums so I think it's just as well!
  23. Hello all! My name is Astrid and I live in England. I'm French, though, so please forgive the odd grammar mistake or bad sentence turn. I like computers, although some of them do not seem to return the favour. I am also a great fan of RPG games, whether online, by email or live. I love reading, in particular science fiction and fantasy. Best writer of all times? Anne McCaffrey in my humble opinion. Although JRR Tolkien and JK Rowling come close seconds. I am just starting my own e-publishing business. You are more than welcome to visit my very first website, http://www.workforyourself.co.cc/, but please bear in mind that it is still under construction at this time. Any helpful comment will be greatly apprecieated.
