FTP - File transfer protocalIt is a way of sending files from your computer to your website, it is one of the best methods, to use FTP you need a client, a free one is https://www.smartftp.com/ you just give it your login details and then drag and drop files and it will upload them to your site for you.

*Smirks (Here we go)Well in my opinion there is no better forum system than SMF, made by the same guys that made YaBBSE, it is just as powerful as vBulletin, as feature rich as IPB and then its as free as phpBB. It has an auto mod installer along with an auto theme installer. It can be used for large or big forums, it has proper support for things like child boards. It also has the world class new feature. It can be found at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ would class it as better than vBulletin, IPB and phpBB.Its that good (REALLY)

Its definately not build for an easy install anyway.

Sorry you must have some documentation, ive checked there site and cant fiond anythiong thats particurarly useful but as usual in trekkie101 fashion, I recomend the free php forum SMF. If you do have some docs, please post thew outlines of them, that may help me. I would probably say its most likely a upload, chmod, run install type package but then ive never used Jsp before.

I use Windows, I was brought up using it and it gets taught in schools and colleges and well nearly everywhere, also it currently dominates the desktop market and im not likely to make much money on fixing linux and linux only. Linux well I wouldnt bounce up and down for it, its well apparently stabler but well it kinda lacks anything that makes the common suer want to change, ive got SuSE but I still like windows better, it gives better support for most programs although that could change. For stability the stats maybe look in favor of linux but I havent had any major problems with windows, infact ive had next to none. I had it running for five days on end and it still managed and kept its speed up. Fair enough it may not be the best server but for a desktop it does pretty well for itself. I do hate Microsoft but Windows is fine for what I use it for. Ill continue to play with linux but it may be a few years before I think about seriously moving to linux for my computer and linux only.

Right ive gone to reply to this so many times but didnt but now im going to, moonwitch you already know my feelings on this so you dont have to listen to my rant. EH?!?!?!? it doesnt, all rbowsers need an address bar and some menus but it doesnt look like Internet Explorer, infact its radically different, why do all OS's look the same? A mac and windows, linux could all be compared but we know they dont actually look the same, similar yes but a Mac or KDEor Gnome dont look like windows, similar in appaerance and functionality but dont actually look the same, the same case is with firefox, yes similar interface but doesnt look like IE in any way. RSS takes a bit of coding to pull off and tabs is quite a major lot of code, I would hardly shrug it off as a simple thing. Also, bookmarks, history, control panel all are different are they not? View source, downloads etc? are all different. Gecko? you do know theres an entire engine thats a complete own coded thing that doesnt use any IE code. Thank you qwijibow you got it right. Sorry for the rant but a lot of people are finding as many way as possible to either bad mouth firefox or pretend its something else. Take the recent java exploit for example. Point: Firefox doesnt look like internet explorer.

SMF is THE forum system to rule all.MiniBB:Sorry too little features but its built that way for that reason.phpBB:Well phpBB although giving the impression its good, I find it pretty boring and well bad (Let me explain), the community there is quiet a nasty lot they really do tare new people and more confident users heads off. The mods mostly dont work, they all require manual code changes. The system has recently come under fire not their fault but it has fallen badly to a few holes recently. The themes are good and such.vBulletin:Wouldnt pay that much for anything you can get for freeIPB:Yeah right, move on, bloat, bloat, bloat, no simple way to do anything, it likes making a mockry of everything simple.SMF:Oh my god! This is the best, mods are added using the package manager which means no manual code changes, themes have an installer to upload even the zips it does the rest. Themes are so far mostly good and look great. The community are great bunch of guys and gals, you just cant beat them (not even with a 4*4) This siftwares admin panel is amazing and doesnt use the standard frame idea. I STRONGLY recomend it over all else. Its better than the paid forums and guess what it can take a whallop and a half of users, with no slow down, trust me on that!Trekkie Recommends:SMF - Nothing better

Other Browsers Besides Firefox? barebones
Trekkie101 replied to ignition's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Ah yes but your forgetting that forums are like this for a reason, conversations are suppsoed to wander, Ignition has got his answer and then the conversation must carry on until another point is made. Conversation will always move on and usually quite fast. Also browser wars are just starting like it or not its going to get quite a bit worse, you wont be able to sleep without dreaming of it. We are here to trade knowledge. I was improving on my point by giving an opinion and explanation, I will fight for Firefox till the bare end. -

Thats what you think, some IE exploits dont make themselfs known, give firefox time, you'll get used to it and its beauty. -

Actually maybe it would be good to have some pro's and consOpenOffice:FreeRelatively small download.Doesnt look the best (1.1.4, 2 looks much better)Presentations need improved, very bad creation toolsLots of support for millions of file typesPlatform IndependantOpen SourceNot too many templates.MS:VERY EXPENSIVE!okay lookVERY EXPENSIVEGood clipartUsed more commonlyGood support for prsentationsI suppose OpenOffice is good for Spreadsheets, Word Proccessing and such but its a nightmare for presentations, its just not as good. Theres a lot to be desired, like for example it took me 15 minutes to fugure to change the background colour.

Setting Up A Web Server Computer At Home
Trekkie101 replied to e-kiene's topic in Websites and Web Designing
To further the above, I tottaly agree, Ive been using XAMPP for about three months now and love the program, perefct web server and FTP if needed, 1 click setup, just grab the instllaer from https://www.apachefriends.org/index.html -
Ive been here from the start and loved every day, this host is as stable as they get, on my forums I actually comment on why I would rather not move to a paid host because of Asta and its greatness.
-
It doesnt really do anything bulletin boardy, its kinda like static HTML, but good luck, maybe it will become big one day.

Managing Boards - Part 2 :DSo you've got your forum set up but thats not enough, you need to make the boards to talk in, you need to split up the conversations and get everything organised so now what you do is open your forum using your URL.Log In -> Click "Admin", enter your forum usernames password to get into the admin panel. Whoa, thats a lot to take in at first, no dont scrap it, I assure you its one of the easiest to use for anything. On the side there is a menu that says "Forum Controls" look inside that box for "Manage Boards" and click it.First lets kill the stuff thats already there, click on "Modify" which is next to General Category and in the page it loads, click "Delete Category" and on the next page, click confirm. Now your back at the Manage Boards screen, click new category, in the full name box, call it whatever you want, and if you want users to be able to hide that category tick the box. Once it returns you back, click new category again, where it says Order, select where you want the second category "In First" or "After X" and then again click "Create Category". Repeat as many times as you want, but remember we've still to add boards to this forum. In your first category click Add Board, you can change its category when creating it if you feel its neccessary, name the board and then give it a description. In allowed groups, tick who you want to be able to see it. In moderators if you have more members put in someones name and then they can, edit/modify/delete posts in that board. Dont put yourself as a moderator as admins can do this anyway. The count posts box can be ticked or unticked and if you want this board to have its own theme, select one. Finnaly click "Add Board"Now a child board, as you are in the mange boards option, click add board again, this time where it says order, select "child of" and then select which board will be the parent, flll in the rest as above and then click add board. Now if you click home you will see a forum that has a category, a board and in the description it says child boards and lists them, click on the parent board and inside the child boards are listed at the top. Click home again now theres an arrow at the side of the category name click it. Then click the arrow next to the home button and then it minimises the clutter on your screen and makes it easier to use, click the arrows again to undo. That is basically the process of adding boards. Private boards arent created by boards but rather by membergroup, more on that soon.Part 2 -
Y'know I would still convert this place to SMF, I still feel it would be much better, obviously the mods would need converted but it would be great. But then although you can convert posts etc, it would maybe be too much trouble.

Apache is just a HTTPd its responsible for taking requests and then sending the data, its like the bar is the OS and the bar tender is the Apache, he serves the data fromt he bar, Xisto to my knowledge are running Linux.

I learned through practice, just grabbed notepad and had W3Schools open, everytime I wanted something I looked it up and remembered it next time, it was a life saver really. Through practice comes my best work. Im now concentraiting on updating my school's HTML learning course to XHTML to make sure the future is compliant.

You did -
So your not too happy with your current Bulletin Board System or are just wanting one, well this guide has insructions on setting up SMF in a very Xisto way. First you need to actually find and learn about SMF, you can see there forum at http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php youll see its working blindingly fast. It can handle a lot more and that has be proven, for instance a Liverpool FC fan club, look at the stats at the bottom next what about a brimmingly full forum http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ again look at the stats. Themes? (SMF has its own Theme Engine) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Also a link worth checking: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ it has all 83! Themes for looking at! Smileys? http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Integration? http://www.simplemachines.org/community/ssi_examples.php <- For your own site Mambo Integration Available MKportal Integration Available Coppermine Gallery Mods? (Heres the most popular) Global Forum Annoucement - http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=78 Download Center - http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=72 Shop Mod - http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=65 Banner Manager - http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=61 Custom BBcode - http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=48 ARCADE - http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=36 Experience bar - http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=34 Price: FREE! Well considering the lead developer said he would leave if they dared to charge for it Anyway lets install Get the package from http://download.simplemachines.org/ get the bz2 Now go into cPanel, open the file manager option then click the folder icon next to public_html then click the button that says "Create new folder" at the top and then name it whatever you wish, then click the folder icon next to it. You should be in a new screen, click the upload files text, then click the browse button and select your SMF download (The Bz2) or other compressions if you chose any other. Then click upload (It will take about a minute) and it will upload your file in a compressed archive rather than extracted which is making upload faster and upload all at once, doesnt need to be FTP which upload 1 file at a time. You will see that it has uploaded the file, now click on the files name, a side menu will load and at this menu click the "Extract file contents" option and it will pop open another window that lists the extracted files. Now click delete file on the archive and then click the trash can. Now close the file manager window, and click on mysql option and scroll to "Create MySQL database" in the box type in a new database name. and then close that window too. Now goto your forums address, http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and you will see the SMF installer, because we didnt FTP some of the chmod settings are wrong so SMf will fix them for us. PROCEED! Change the RED with your info Server: localhost Port:21 Username: yourastacpanelusername Password: yourastacpanelpassword Install Path: should be right: /public_html/smfdirectory Forum Name: My Community Forum URL: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/.you.astahost.com/smfdirectory And then tick the two boxes below, it would be stupid not to! MySQL Server Name: localhost Username: cpanelusername Password: cPanelpassword Database name: (The database we created remember?) you_dbname Prefix: smf PROCEED! Your Username: YourAdminName Password: Makeapassword Password: enetersameasabove Email Address: you@gmail.com MySQL Password: cPanelpassword PROCEED! Then click "Click here to see your new forum" and its there, now to get rid of that horriblered box, log into FTP and delete the file in the SMF directory "install.php" And now you have a forum Part 1: Installing Part 2: Managing boards Part 3: Some settings that are best Part 4: Themes, Smileys, and mods Part 4: Memebers, Member Ranks/Groups/Permissions Any questions? Please ask Support for SMF: http://www.simplemachines.org/

New Virus Alert! Especially for those MSN messenger users
Trekkie101 replied to Xevian's topic in Security issues & Exploits
Run proper protection, I could say i will download a virus and would be confident it wouldnt harm me, and if it did, I wouldnt loose much data, if you take care and keep a record metally of what should and shouldnt be there along with not following links that you are told to goto that have obvious extentionsI would for example never link someone directly to a .exe .pif .cmd etc I would give them the site.
