  1. i have personally tried the gizmo project http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and have found it to be great! good quality, no drop outs, and very good prices! They also have free pc to phone calling to some locations. if your friend has gizmo too, you can chat, pc to phone for free! i suggest you give it a go! -jimmy
  2. I have just purchased a CCD barcode scanner from bitatek http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ < thats the product if you want to have a look. It came with a ps2 keybaord wedge interface and all i had to do was connect it to the computer and then the keyboard to the scanner. i have connected it and both the scanner and keyboard have power. the keyboard types and the scanner element glows red when i press the scan button. but when i try to scan something, anything it wont go through, the element lights up for a few seconds then goes off. the first time i connected it to the computer, i managed to get the scanner to beep and read a few barcodes from the book (the manual has configuration barcodes) now i cant get it to beep at all. when i connected it to a second computer i had the same problem, worked for a bit the first time, then wont work later! waiting for your help -jimmy89
  3. i have my barcoding program set up so that as soon as the text box text matches a listing from the database (all the database barcodes are listed in a lstbox) the form loads the information from the database.
  4. as a developer i like to have everything ordered, looking professional and simple to use and understand. No huge graphics, hard to read text etc etc. Its like a website, if its hard to read and annoying, people aren't going to use it are they?as a user, i prefer the professional looks. They can be easier to use and its means less time having to learn where everything is and more time actually using the program!
  5. yeah, i didn't use the 'new' part when declaring, now it works fine! thanks for your help -jimmy
  6. by the sound of that when the final version was built they (MS) has changed the way that they write to the files, thats why they are unreadable and to the older version seems like they are corrupted!the older formats work fine because there is nothing in the format that has changed between the final and the beta2. i think you will have to upgrade from beta2. anyway, i think that beta2 runs out around February so you might have to upgrade then!good luck, write back if you have any problems-jimmy89
  7. i have been researching barcode scanners because i am asctually thinking of buying one to make my job much easier! anyway, by the looks of the scanner you have, it has a keyboard wedge interface. in other words, it connects to the keyboard connector on the back of your computer (the PS/2 connector). This makes programming with the scanner easy! when the barcode scanner reads a barcode because it is connected via the keyboard input the computer reads this information from the barcode as if it was from the keyboard. so, technically if you have the cursor where you want it, say a textbox, then when you scan an item the information will be entered into the textbox! this is good, but if you have the cursor in the wrong spot you will find that the information is entered into the incorrect location! you should be able to use the usb connection to connect the scanner to the computer and be able to control the information before it gets to your program. This is much harder and will require different software, you can search on the internet for barcode software, or you can have a look at the wasp software demo site at http://www.waspbarcode.com/barcode-software/barcode-maker Good Luck, -jimmy
  8. Hi all, I have been trying to use the Clear Image COM in vb.net. for those who don't know what clear image is go to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ i downloaded their SDK and am trying to get it to work. all i am trying to do at the moment is find the text from a barcode, i have the barcode stored in an image file on my computer. I know the file works cause i used the demo that came with the SDK to test it out! I am using the following code.. Imports ClearImageImports SystemPublic Class Form1 Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click Dim file2 As String, data As String file2 = My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath + "\image.bmp" CiImage.Open(file2, 1) data = CiBarcode.Text End SubEnd Class but when i use both the CiImage.Openand the CiBarcode.Textthey both come up with a what does this mean and how can i use an object reference? Thanks -jimmy
  9. download any sound drivers that you can find for your sound device, then go the device manager in windows and look under the sound, video, and game controllers tree, find your sound countroller and uninstall it (right click and uninstall, or the button on the menu bar at the top) then scan your computer for new hardware and follow the prompts, windows should detect that the hardware is not installed and find drivers for it, if it asks point windows to any new drivers that you might have and install them. if everything goes well, you should see the device again the the device manager, no yellow exclamation mark and if you double click on it the status should be if windows asks to restart, you should and even if it doesn't ask, you should anyway! hopefully that should fix your problem!
  10. they're some very nice tips you've got there! just a warning to anyone thats attempting to use any of the registry tricks, be sure you know what you are doing. the registry is a dangerous place and can seriously harm your computer! thats said, its also great for tweaking windows. if your not sure how to get there, you probably shouldn't be there, but put simply, hit the windows key + R then type in regedit then hit enter! once your in there you can use the registry keys (that were given above) in the search feature to find them and then edit them!i must stress what out what you are doing in there, its not th place to be playing around!good luck-jimmy
  11. great post and great tutorial! very informative and explains how to do everything each step of the way! but i must disagree with disabling system restore. it is very useful when you install a program that play havoc on your system, system restore is an easy way to go back and undo what has happened to your computer!!it will not delete any of your documents or personal confrontation, it only changes anything that was installed or changed on the system. and the best thing, if it doesn't work or makes it worse, you can just undo the restoration you just completed!
  12. if you are running on a novell network, or have novell client installed on your computer, locking the computer so really easy! all you have to do is press CTRL + ALT + DEL then when the dialog comes up, press ENTER! i think this is the same as what xboxrulz said cause you can do the same thing on windows 2k and xp
  13. as 04dsmith86 said one of the hardest parts of putting a computer is the processor! your right! it can be hard but if its done properly, its no problem, you just have to be very, very careful about what your doing! double check everything and make sure that the fan is down securely and it works! you dont want to be buying a new pc (or building a new pc) to find that it dies in a few hours from you overheating it!i have built every computer that I have every owned and its very rewarding, and it is so much cheaper! if you can get yourself down to a computer fair and purchase some parts, you could have the whole thing done in a weekend!if you are planning to build your own pc and it is your first time i would suggest getting some books that can help you through it! when i first put a computer together the books were an invaluable resource! get ones that can explain how parts work, as well as how much they should be, and of cause, how to put it together!happy computer building/modding-jimmy
  14. thats a great idea! if people want to watch it they can, and if they dont - well dont download it! they could make money on it by selling access to the podcasts, but they would be leaked somehow - everything else is!
  15. lol, well i only just reinstalled windows the other day and i'm in the process of reinstalling programs, so when i get to last.fm and itunes ill see how it goes!
  16. i have to agree! there is going to be only a handful of users that are going to do this, so really is not much of a problem. that said, whenever someone hears security flaw theres always something to be said - and a microsoft patch to go with it!
  17. I installed last fm onto my computer and ever since i did itunes has been unexpectedly closing! does anyone know whats happening, im assuming its last fm cause as soon as i turned it off, the problem stopped!
  18. i have to agree with 04dsmith86, wrong topic and need to use quotes and acknowledge your source!thats still some pretty interesting information about the first computer! does anyone know the system specs on the first system build. i doubt it would be like anything we know today, i dont even know if it would fit onto any scale of measurement we use (did it even have a 1mb of memory? did it have a sound or graphic card?)
  19. myspace only lets you play music that is hosted by myspace music! thats if you are using their flash music player. if you are using another embeded music player you can go from anywhere that can host music files. just remember copyright laws and you should be fine!-jimmy89
  20. do you have any type of requirements for joining. i know many clans want to have people at certain levels and skills before they are allowed in!what does this clan do exactly. fight people, walk around in a ground, complete quests?
  21. i am now the happy owner of a nfs carbon game! and i have to say its great!! it is similar to the nfs underground version but it is also very different!the crews and regions that you have to take control of area are great additions! for those who havent played..as you win races you take over territory on the map and as you take over more, you get mroe races, more cars and more people to play against. when you own almost a complete region the person who is currently in charge challenges you -if you win, you get the territory!! great idea! the modding of cars has also undergone some changes, and i have to say great again!the autosculpt mode is great. Autosculpt lets you chnage the size width length etc etc of all of the aftermarket parts on your car! the paint also has some new additions including candy and matte paint!as always you have to race in the carrear to play the game. the game is played at night and has a great feel to it.also going with the territories there are 'heat zones'. these 'zones' are a indicator of how much cop trouble there is in the region, if the heat is high (like 4 or 5) you have a better chance of being chased by the police, whereas if it was lower (1 or 2) you wont get chased as often!the pursuit mode has also changed!as you are being chased you have a chase meter which sits in the top right of your screen. if the cops get close to you, the goes to the red and to the 'busted side' once you get away from them its goes the opposite way! when the bar goes all green you go into cooldown mode. in cooldown you cannot be seen by the police or they will chase you, stay way and you win the pursuit gaining bounty!out of career mode, there is the challenge series! these are a series of races and events that you can complete to finish the game. the challenges range from outrunning the cops in a dump truck to getting from one side of the town to another.the drift mode has been revamped too! you now need to have speed to drift and you get more points depending on how fast you are going! the drifts are fast and can go out of control anytime! one of the best drifts is the downhill drift which you must race on a number of occasions. while you are going downhill at over 150kmph you must drift around corners, not touching the edges as to loose your points. overall, nfs carbon is a great game and i recommend it to anyone!
  22. people have said that using a mac filter on your router works! but i have read in other forums on this board that you can crack this mac filter, is that possible!also, what is the best encryption method and does encryption slow down your internet access and data bandwidth?
  23. any type of computer based network chat or online messenger client would work (assuming that you have computers and an internet connection).i know of some kit intercom projects that you can build yourself (they are pretty easy) and all you need to hook them together is two copper wires! a very easy and cheap solution for your causegood luck-jimmy
  24. i have used this shortcut with windows xp professional sp2 and it works like a charm. windows xp home may not work though!
  25. nice tutorial! it has some good advice on what parts to buy and expected costs. though it doesn't seem to have much on the actual building and assembling of a pc!kepp you the good work-jimmy
