  1. I am not much digging into this because i know that both the forums are silent and hardly anyone posting so any reason like mycent script runs slow etc. is not something i am going to believe as they're running it manually or not running at all. I can figure that it all coming down to manual post approval from mods and assigning mycents value to that. So that is why i'm only sticking with asking straight questions like "are mycents updated ?" and leaving it at that. I post when they're updated and don't post when they don't. Opaque said recently that he devalued the mycents in order to bring members back which turned me off so i'm not going to create any drama over here. Just going to post to see if they wish to give me mycent and post on that point else just skim and move on. I don't see points in asking questions like when mycents are going to update, why they're allocated less or why updates on this site are slow etc. I'm past all that.Coming to meebo toolbar point I guess you're not aware of Meebo for website - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Wibiya is yet another beast like that-both are annoying. Hope you learned something new today ;)Apple is too expensive and totally useless considering other phones with lots of featuers at lower costs. Nokia W7 is going to be great and windows will not be that bad. Do check akash tablet and reliance tablet if you're keeping tab on tablets :DWordpress, Joomla and Drupal based forum extensions are not good for large sites. For small groups they're okay but larger sites they not only eat CPU but often cause DB errors and are prone to same attacks like their parent core.
  2. Okay as asta seems to be quite let me post here the bug updates due to no presence from opaque. Mycents on Xisto are not working at all. I have tried with lenghty post approach from velma's suggestion. Two posts and more than two days and no update of mycents at all. I can definitely confirm this on my myncents stats over there. I hope notifying about bugs and broken things is okay ? or am i supposed to shut up ? Let me know either way because i don't want to end up in some drama.Nitin, Yes i remember that. It was meebo or wibya toolbar if i remember correctly. But it was taken down by opaque and things started working. I don't have iPad but yeah i do use asta and some other forums on other android based tablet and smartphones. Old IPB used to work fine and new is taking more time due to heavy ajax. As for bbpress and phpbb, they're totally complicated forums and it takes newbies a lot of time to figure stuff out. Bbpress is not at all suitable for bigger forums. Phpbb is the most ugly in management and for extensions too. So if i got money then choice is between ipb and vb. In case of VB they're simplifying things compared to VB and are much bettter for handling larger forums.
  3. I just checked the stackoverflow thread and found out that most of the advice you given is already there. So i guess i'm pretty much limited with the current choices. I have to see what others are using. Maybe Kdevelop or QT designer with php plugins can be one option to get php rolling on linux box. I am not sure of this option by the way.I did checked the Wine option but as computer is on low resource i don't think it is good for coding php or any other programming language. I will have to spend a lot of time waiting and debugging. I don't know about Komodo edit, because i can not pay for any IDE as of now. I do however can donate some funds but purchase is not an option for now. So if it's pro and free type of catch then i have to pass on the komodo edit for now.Coming on the point of IDE that allows connection with small web server, yes i mean that it allow debugging and compiling within itself like php designer. I know Eclipse and Netbeans can do that. So that is the type of program i am looking for except that i don't want eclipse and netbeans.
  4. I thought about Vim but decided not to use it because if there are already some of the softwares that make my work easy then there is no need to make it more difficult. I am not completely keyboard warrior, i use mouse often and for that reason i guess i need IDE. I do think about using those keyboard tools as they reduce my overall input time and mouse hovering time on computer and gets work done quickly. Other than that i also tried Geany and gPHPedit. I am impressed with both of these editors. But i always wanted to use something that is connected with the LAMPP or small webserver. I am quite addicted to softwares like phpdesigner. So therefore i think such softwares on linux a must. Though there arent any as far as my observation goes, so hope phpdesigner owners make linux version soon. (or maybe i'm missing similar softawre that works like that?) LAMPP (now XAMPP for linux) is the one i'm using it as of now. I did came across few issues with xampp. Like not able to be writing the files on htdocs folder or getting permissions for writing files on that folder etc. I followed xampp on ubuntu tutorial and so far it is fixed. I am going to use geany and xampp on linux for now till i get some good decent IDE.
  5. I just noticed that change in mycents in my post. So thanks for that velma and shri. Another thing is that KS and AH breaks in stylesheet if the speed of internet is slow. Earlier forum wasn't like this. So i dont know what type of heavy update this time IPB made. I hope you pass message to opaque about not adding any extra library like dictionary.com widget or share widget, it'll make forum harder to access to us (Mobile users). I know we are in minirity but still. Anyway design of default theme looks clean and good compared to VB and all those free forum system but at the same time it is going slow too. I like IPB for various reasons, most of time i noticed that it is more accessible than VB and PhpBB.Anyway, i hope you guys can find good theme for this IPB version (which is going to be painful, i know ). My content thingy should be gone from the navigation or else most of us are going to get stuck in the forum like rat in maze.
  6. What is the status of mycents ? How much time it'll take for it to come back ?I just hope mycents come back and this time they're not low valued for members contribution. I have not noticed any errors so far, so don't know what opaque is fixing out there. I just noticed that making replies is much slower than previous IPB board. Also finding new threads and replies is lot harder. We have to click on "View new content" to find the new threads and replies from there we can find some options. Anyway good to see things changing here. Only if mycents are reasonably rewarded, more members will come to post in forums.
  7. A few months back or you can say years back i tried FreeDOS. This project of freedos was kept alive for BIOS owners and some other hardware manufacturers to test the hardware. I also found that they still have few members and their projects running on their site. They have working text editor for FreeDOS and few minor apps too. They are much improved version of MS DOS. I know MS DOS and most of the terminal based systems are now history but FreeDOS is still good project. I appreciate terminal inside linux and i would love to run FreeDOS inside windows. I don't know if they're going to keep this in their new project.
  8. I use XAMPP for php development on linux. I found that sometimes it is too heavy with the LAMP server. But it is okay for the starters. I was thinking about the low footprint lamp stack. I want it to consume less space and less clutter on my /usr/bin directory. I don't know if some of you agree with this. But in case of windows uniform server is much less headache than xampp. In case of xampp you have to manually fix few stuff like php.ini and other settings while dealing with the frameworks. In my opinion that is very tiresome work. I managed cakephp in few minutes on uniform server but in case of xampp it was throwing a lot of errors. I don't know how to fix this but anyway that's not the question for now. I think i would like to see similar lamp server for linux. Any ideas where we could find such alternative. So what do you prefer ? php under some huge IDE like eclipse or netbeans ?I can't use such heavy IDE's because of the speed and the system resources reason. So any other way to get lampp server on ubuntu ?
  9. Thanks yordan. But these libs are no longer working. They do install vodafone mobile connect scrip inside ubuntu. But somehow they can't get it to connect. I also tried to boot with USB connected but it is simply not showing the menu for connecting. I do get network icon on the top dashboard and from where i usually connect my mobile phone connection. But in case of USB it is not letting me connect. That USB is not in the menu. I think something is wrong with that package. I guess it is old compared to the installation that i have running on. So i decided to try other methods and found ubuntu vodafone page. It did shows the similar usb-modeswitch files. I find that method working hardly on my computer. I think that method is very confusing and it can't get the connection done somehow. Then i used the sakis3g method. It is working for now on my computer. I did struggled with APN and some other settings on my laptop but it is working for now. I dont know if this is exact solution because sakis3g seems to be independent of the libraries that i downloaded from betavine. It makes use of usb-modeswitch only. Anyway, for now it is working and those who are looking for 3G connect with vodafone should try saksi3g. It doesn't show network connect icon in dashboard panel but it does connect and get things moving. Anyway thanks a lot for the link of betavine, even though it is not helping but gave me some pointers for search.
  10. I was trying to connect my 3G data card from vodafone to linux system and found that it doesn't detect it as data card. It considers the drive as USB storage drive and mounts it and lets me open it. I don't know how to fix this now. I want it to be used as data card and connect to the internet. I did searched for the ways to find connectivity using 3g data cards. I am using vodafone huwei cards. I don't know if it in anyway allows to connect. Officially there is no linux support page on the vodafone site. So i have dropped hopes of getting help from the vodafone folks site in my country. I also tried asking some other ubuntu users using that type of datacard. But so far no one came across to answer the question.I have ubuntu 10.04 installation on my one of the old laptop. I guess it has all the usb-modeswitch libs and that lets me connect to the internet using my sony erricsson phone. I think it;s cool atleast that it lets me connect via phone. But somehow it is not letting me connect via datacard. Any ideas how to fix this ?
  11. Coda seems to be the best choice for almost any programming language file on the Mac OS. Coda is not an IDE but it is similar to notepadd++ and pspad. If you can get these editors then that will be also fine. I found netbeans and eclipse IDE for mac os. Why not try them ? On windows i know php designer 7 or 8 could be a good deal. You can ask if they have mac versions. If not then your choices are restricted to eclipse and netbeans for now. I think you can go with coda or other similar editor. Hope that helps you to get started.
  12. I visit too many website and have plenty of signal vs noise chaos going on inside my mind. My daily first to visit site is facebook. I check daily news on local site and on yahoo news. Then forums in no particular order - ars technica, Xisto, ubuntuforums, suggestafix and many others. I also spend some time on stack exchange sites but after some time it gets tiring. Stack exchange sites are boring as well because they don't allow off topic or tangent posts in their site. So these are the places where i spend most of the time for my technology related stuff. For off topic, i have one irc channel with friends where i spend atleast few minutes of the day. This whole stuff takes no more than 2-3 hours per day and that too in slots and not in one shot. I do want to spend some time on sites related to history, biology and psychology. But just not sure where and how to go about that.
  13. That's true that there better mobile makers which are not from china. But the reason chinese mobiles are more in the market is because of their market penetration. Take example ICE cream sandwich release of android OS. Many big guns are yet to update their old models or even recent to this operating system. In case of chinese mobile companies, they take the risk of bad hardware and glitches becasue their products are cheap and less usable already. So they bring new products in the market with these new features. I remember few chinese phones launching their new product within 4 days of Ice cream sandwich release. So that is the reason they're more in market. These products are much more glossy too and that is why many newcomers in mobile buying fall for these products.Take case of Yuhua which is very popular chinese android mobile company. They're into other mobile and carrier stuff too. Most of the time their phones turn into good shiny paperweights after usage. I'm sure you know many other companies which sound similar to big guns in mobile industry. Like ELGI or Uwakia etc, these type of companies are fly by night and they rarely have internet presence too.
  14. Not all are chinese. Processors are from taiwan, korea, japan and china. So not all hardware is from china. Most of the cheap hardware that we see today is from china. Take case of nokia which is finnish company, apple us based company and microsoft which is again us based company. They use native hardware for the mobiles. Samsung, LG, GE and few other companies on the other hand make use of both native and chinese or other hardware from the market. Chinese cheap hardware prices are very low(thats why cheap). Take case of ipad clone of chinese maker, the cost is below 100$. They don't give warranty for such tablets and phones. If it's gone then ahem it's gone.
  15. I think samsung and some other small mobile and tablet companies don't restrict users to install any other OS on their phones. Only apple and microsoft has such limitations. I have not yet tested any third party os on android based mobile so not sure about android. But nokia n8 and n9 are the one which you can use for installing the third party OS. There are folks who have install small linux distros on these phones. You can find tutorial on such installation posted way back year in knowledgfestura on linux and python installation on such phones. Ubuntu is another OS that is coming soon on tablet and phones. I am interested in that OS as ofnow. But only if they come up with some essential music and other support that nokia and apple phones already have like file formats and some small settings like browsing the disk etc. That will make things better. As for mozzila's OS, who knows they might change the world like they did with browser. I am tired of android based phones because of chinese hardwares. Let's see what mozilla brings next year.
  16. This offer seems to be from hostgator and google india adwords division. So that is why this is regional specific. Also Asian countries are doing fine in the market as of now. There is not much of euro recession stuff going on over here. So i guess google is bringing the money out of indian market with adwords ads and other stuff. My thinking is that they want more members or customers for the hostgator and the adwords ads. That way both hostgator and google is going to benefit. In control panel for hostgator there seems to be voucher of 100$ google adwords, 50$ bing and 25$ Yahoo ads voucher. So definitely they're into this for some ads and money. Otherwise one year of hosting costs a lot if there are more numbers in the hosting for shared customers. In case of small business they have more static sites so only bandwidth is used and not space, so hostgator can afford it. I think similar offer was running in canada, uk earlier, so it is obvious they're now thinking about other countries. Not sure if you have hostgator around your place. If they're there then surely they'll throw some offer from which you can use adwords ads for free for your site.
  17. Gmail does't have self hosted program and the data remains on the google harddisk. So it's not hosting service from google. But for business users they offer postini service which is paid and requires seperate registration and all that stuff. Google offers blog hosting with blogger and also allows domain registration and mapping to their system. Also they have technical support for blogger blogs and they're quite active too. I think sites is another division of google for the static sites. Most likely they've domain plans too for the service. I guess by allowing app users to use google sites, they may offer similar service. As for the current offer which is listed on this page. I can only think of some benefits of this offers. Like limited period domain and hosting. Also there is adwords which you can use for the early traffic. I don't know how it is going to benefit there after. But for starters this offer does sound good.
  18. Just found out about the new offer that hostgator and google is putting out for the small business owners. I don't know what is their intention behind this offer. But it seems to me that they're interested in getting small business in india to the world wide web with this offer. They're offering free domain name, hosting and free adwords voucher to the users of hostgator. I don't know how long this offer is going to last but if you're small business owner or employee then try to see if you can get your business under this offer. It won't be free forever with both domain and hosting. Sooner or later you are going to pay for the service. But till then you can get more exposure for your service. I found out that it is good offer despite their intentions. So what's the offer ? They have a target of 500,000 small business hosting and domain name and adwords voucher distribution. They're offering .in domain name for the customers for free during their free period. Mind you, .in domain name is costly and when you renew it's going to cost you more than .com or .net domains. Either way renewals are going to cost you for sure. Small business owners are also going to get google apps for small business for free for first year. If they have less users in the system then the offer remains pretty much free even after the period for google apps. Adwords voucher of about 2500RS is also going in the giveaway. Though there are hardly any benefits anymore for adwords, but you can still drive some traffic using adwords. This looks like a good offer for those who want to use Google adwords and the apps for their business. As indian small business percentages are above 8 Million, i don't know how many are going to pick this offer. Anyway, hope this helps to all those who want to try adwords for their website.
  19. Man technology is moving too fast these days. I wouldn't be surprised if they come up with paper displays in the shape of ipad. I mean that is one possibility too. I don't know the quality of the display in that case but it could get close to kindle atleast. As for now they still have the support of other hardware components for the holding and the connection purpose. I think i should wait till they make paper display so cool, that they're indeed like paper. Just saw the launch of nokia luma and asha on youtube. These are some cool phones and are surely going to put competition against android and iphone. I didnt felt the UI of mango cool but atleast it is attractive due to tiles and the easy accessibility of the windows. This current prototype in the gsm arena looks good to me, i hope they bring public display soon so that we get some videos for this. Thanks for the share, made me interested in phones again.
  20. Google buzz was used to be part of google mail and there anyone can comment just like google plus. So it was basically like share and forward, comment type of stuff. The same stuff that is today going on with the google plus. As they're more interested in google plus, i thought they are going to close orkut and buzz sooner or later. Because they are having issues with profit and by making multiple less profitable services they're losing money. So it was obvious that they were thinking about closing the buzz in near time. I guess they finally made the decision and now going to end this at the start of next year. So all those shared data and the button stuff is going to be destroyed soon. Google +1 button is also the same, other than their own social networking people hardly click on that button. I doubt if they'll respond to google buzz in any different way than they're responding to it as of now. Because google plus is boring and has much open and pubic profiles that makes social communication uncomfortable for many folks. In next few months, i'm sure that they're going to kill few more services like this. Google labs was shutdown this year. So surely they're going to remove few more services in near future. Google operating system blog is very accurate on the happenings in the google world. They pushed this news early and from there i found out about the closure of google buzz. Anyway, sad for those who used to share the gmail stuff from the buzz. I guess they have to manually send the stuff to each other from now on.
  21. If i'm not wrong then chrome and the safari are using the same rendering kit called webkit. So as far as speed is concerned for rendering both should be same. Unless either of them is using any other way to increase the speed. I know that google chrome for one uses google page speed service for their browser users. This is similar to that of opera turbo and is faster like that on the slow speed connections. I don't know if apple safari offers any such service.Somehow their browser and the chrome looks same to me. Only difference is that safari on windows doesn't come up with as many add-ons like firefox or chrome. Both of these other browsers (chrome and safri) are good at browsing and looks but compared to firefox and opera i doubt if they have dedicated add-ons at numbers like firefox. As for looks of the safari, it takes modification of native look. I mean slightly looks like apple os window border but stil takes same buttons and the location of close button for windows app. That aside i have not seen much of the improvements in the look of safari browser. I think that's okay, i dont want much eye candy from browsers. But i guess chrome smoothness and the speed is making many other browser developers change their designs. I am not going to be surprised if firefox changes the look to somewhat like chrome or safari in future.
  22. Adobe reader is buggy and it takes a lot of resources on windows machine. Also the update runs no matter what settings is set on the preferences. I have disabled the updated in the settings but somehow the updater runs on it' own. Adobe reader also has issues with the firefox machine and it becomes extremely slow when we load the pdf from the browser.I don't know how pdf documents less than 1 mB takes more resources on chrome and firefox for windows. I guess adobe is all for making the buggy apps, no matter which ever the version or the platform they have running. For this reason i have disabled the adobe reader on my machine. I have installed foxit and one more freeware adobe pdf reader. On ubuntu i dont know which pdf reader is running and how it supports chrome. But that is what running on my laptop that has ubuntu. I think foxit is much light on the system and eats less resource compared to adobe pdf reader. My usage is going to with foxit from now on atleast until adobe fixes their buggy software, makes it more small in footprint.
  23. Bill gates is active in charity these days. He visited my city 2 years back. I think he was doing some AIDS awareness and the child labor campaign. So most likely he's giving back to the society just like warren buffet. If we compare steve jobs and bill gates. I must say that steve's work because microsoft reached more people than apple. Still windows is more accessible compared to apple. Apple is hellua costly and most of the people can't afford it. In fact apple wants to keep this way and they want the difference so that they can create rich people stuff. it's no different than the benz and other jet type of stuff reserved for the folks. Steve also never did the charity work which i have stress here as we are comparing him with bill gates. It is his choice though whether to give money or not. But when he's getting so much money out of pocket from the rich folks, it does helps when he gives back to the charity. I know it's not good to talk against someone on his death thread. But i guess charity does have it's angle and i expected steve to have that much gratitude. I mean he was adopted son afterall so he must have that side to change the lives of people.
  24. Remember those flipbooks in 90's ? or earlier than that ? I remember playing with them for some of the sport related action flips. Some cricketer playing square drive or bowler hitting the wickets. I once thought if it was possible to have similar flipbooks these days. Randomly came across one site where such software was featured. I gave it a try and found that this software can be a good option for those who wants to print flipbooks at home. Though the current version seems to be only for personal use and it flashes this message for those who wish to use it for commercial purpose. That aside you can use it for your simple flipbooks, like cartoons or some webcam funny activity. There are plenty of uses of this flipbook if you have enough idea. I am thinking of making it as Christmas present. You can download the flipbook from official flipbook printer suite site. So far from what i have managed to play with this software, you can use the jpg images, video files and the other formats from which you can create small still that are going to be printed in flipbook. You can delete or add custom message into the pages aswell. Also you can use the software for the removal of excessive un-necessary frames. It'll let you test the flipbook virtually on your computer before you print it out on paper. You can change and make your own flipbooks of size of your choice. Result of the software is something like this : Perfect for those who want to use it as gift this thanksgiving or christmas holidays. You can however use it on any other occasions as well. But it is free for personal use. You can use it with some restrictions, which i have not understood so far. Have to check for more restrictions and the possibilities. Hope someone else find it useful.
  25. That gives me the hint for the portability, yordan. I thought about it but i rarely do some link saving activity on other computers. Oh yes, i do use netcafe from time to time but it is quite rare compared to the usage on my mobile. So most likely my usage is on my laptop or the computer. I have tried to find out ways for the portability. There are few ways to get around it. For example, using the portable browser with linkman extension. Take case of firefox or chrome or opera and then install the add-on on these browsers and move anywhere you want with the USB drive. This is one of the easiest ways i can think of. Then there is another alternative of using the linkman in portable mode is to simply copy and paste the folder content to the USB drive. As the data in file is dependent on the sql db or their flat file, i don't think they're setting or registry dependent anymore. I guess their Lite version can be made portable this way. Not sure about the professional or paid version. But i think either this method or simply using the paid portable version can do the portability job. I would like to see if any other portable alternative is there if outreach doesn't allow us to use portable version for the free software. Anyway, they have this handy tool so portable will be sure hit for them.
