I never checked this method on my own comptuer. This method just makes use of the DVD and all the drivers and files are loaded as per the DVDs content is copied into the USB. So there is nothing less or more in it in case of USB. I think only issue one can have is when there are bad USB drivers and if the BIOS is old then surely the booting is hard to manage. In case of existing OS, there is no chance that it will allow to boot onto the USB if there are corrupted USB driver. There are some recovery disks and usbs where one can use drivers that lets any usb boot into the system and BIOS never makes any objection against it.That's all I can say about this. Unless someone test this in old and new computers, It is really hard to figure out how to solve some of the issues that are going to be there with USB. I doubt if there are any such issues anymore. Mac is bootable via USB, So is Windows 7 and soon there is going to be Windows 8 bootable via USB. Old media like DVD and other discs are on the brink of expiration anyway. So USB boot makes sense.

I know that regex are language agnostic because of the wide areas where it can be used. I have used regeex in ruby on rails, python and now in php. I have found it very handy. I think like string operations they are also fast. Most of the string operations and regex are common. You just need regex in araes where string cant do the job. For example, in areas where yuo want to do the seach and replace operations, regex is very useful. I know that some think regex is very slow but I have seen no performance change with the regex. Maybe it could be for large programs or for server based operations. So far nothing observable from my end. I have tried the python regex at first because I found that using python first to experiment it as python requires less code. So I tried with that and then later on moved to php regex. I am going to use the stuff in some of my php based stuff. I don't know how much I have learned regex perfectly but if they are going to save me time then by all means i am going to use them in my programs. I also see the use of the regex in file maangement and some of the other stuff related to the i/o. I have not done much of that in php but would love to do that. Currently I am reading some of the posts from the google programmer R.cox about the regex. As his regex knowledge was used in the google code search. I see that his posts do make sense about the usage and speed of regex. I know that i am not going to use the regex for anything complex like that. I am just testing the waters of regex as of now. I will post more based on my observation with regex. I would love to know if anyone else is using regex in their works and have any good suggestions, books and posts to watch for.

I just finished playing strategy defense 3 game which is tower defense game. I know it is kinda too fast and it's hard to keep it up with the pace of this game. But it's okay if you like strategy games with some speed. I think this game has potential to be a good tower defense game but only if they make it more attractive adding story and some sort of incetive. As of now there seems to be nothing in the game that attracts and the speed is also fast unless you're tower defense player, you'll find it boring and too quick to finish or play. There is also one more game of which I tried playing the demo version. It is oil rush game. This is another tower defense kind of game and it is good at graphics. You'll defeinitely enjoy the game for it's graphics. Atleast I did and I am sure that others are going to enjoy for the same. Strategy and the speed is fine and it's quite addictive too. There are ofcourse some limitations in towers and difficulty in the game. But they have kept the rest for the paid version which is fair in my opinion. There is also linux and mac version of that game but not yet tried on linux and as per sources the game is not yet built properly for the linux. So skipping that version any way. One more game tested this week is "revenge of the titans". This is good game and i would love to review the game separately. As of now i have tested it on windows 7 and as per my observation vista and windows xp running is kinda difficult for this game. It is java based game and is slow as expected. But once loaded it runs smoothly. Graphics is cool and you'll get hooked to it. There are powerful monsters and even towers can't kill some of them. For rest of the other review I may opne another thread for the detailed review.

Elementary Os - Ubuntu Fork Only Less Annoying
mahesh2k posted a topic in Websites and Web Designing
I am currently in search of some good distros based on debian. I tried linux mint but not much interesting in that. It is just ubuntu with cinamon shell. I know there are some who are finding it easy to use and would stick to it due to the HUD. But i was looking for some graphically rich and well supported community distro like ubuntu. I came across elementary OS this year after spending a lot of time with MATE desktop distros. You can check out the elementary OS here. I don't know how many are picking up this new OS but it seems it offers all the fun in ubuntu plus it has some nice GUI. The current version is called jupiter which is based on gnome 2 and is much easy to navigate. I think gnome 3 based UI is going to make it yet antoher unity like distro. But it seems they are paying attention to the HIG which is human interface guidelines. There are some test projects which I checked where they are improving the ubuntu which canonical is leaving due to their interest in netbooks and tablets. You can see the jupiter intro and the looks here. I think they are going to release the Luna version after ubuntu release. So that makes their release in april. So anyway I am waiting for their release and going to see how it looks and works compared to ubuntu. If they improve where canonical forgot about the ubuntu desktop then surely this distro is going to be more popular compared to ubuntu. Do check out the screenshots and the videos some of the users have posted on youtube. I have seen the boot and the application loading video on youtube but there are even more better videos. So check it out in youtube too. -
Okay I had to create this thread in order to avoid the thread tangent posts for mate desktop. If you're tired of unity interface in ubuntu or using gnome 3 out of frustration then cheer up and use mate desktop. It is not official as of now and there are some random betas out there but as this is based on gnome 2 you get to use the desktop wihtout any issues. I have found that they're planning to retain the top nav bar with options of applications, places and system common in their future release. I don't know how much they did progress with the gnome 3 porting but it looks like they are planning for the next update very soon. As of now you can look at their official site here. They have some nice screenshot i gues mix of mint and some other desktops. You can also checkout more screenshots on their wiki page. They have about 5 images of the desktop and it seems they are looking good. You may notice that theyre keeping a lot of things from gnome without change. Only difference is that they';re adding more GTK3 code with some minor graphics updates. Forum isn't active yet but it seems most of the maintainers or developers are reading the comments passed to the threads. How I see this desktop environement? I think this is good opportunity to use the gnome code and replace the top nav bar with something they had in version 2. Not all laptops and desktops are going to be touch screen in next 3 years. So there is no point in using the slingshot over menu interface. I do think that slingshot is good for the touchscreen and that's all. I am looking forward to some of the good changes in the mate desktop. I hope it replaces the worst side of the gnome soon.Till then I am sure like me there are many other users waiting for the software to mature and be more usable just like gnome.

Ubuntu Unity Hud (Head-Up Display)
mahesh2k replied to mahesh2k's topic in Websites and Web Designing
There is a heated discussion going on over at ubuntu forums. You can find that discussion in this thread. If you check it from the start of the thread, I think ubuntu users are way too cool compared to windows and apple folks. I have seen windows and apple folks literally going for name calling over some issues. But in case of ubuntu, I guess they have a lot more tolerance for broken things. If this is how they think then surely ubuntu and linux is coming from a long standing history of tolerance and hard work. I was just scrolling all these pages on forums and came to that conclusion. I know that many are moving away from ubuntu for some reasons - be it mint or any other debian fork. But it goes to show that there is some vision. Like it or not, I realized that I am low on funds and using the old hardware. I have one computer at home which is shipped during 2003 and only motherboard of that computer was replaced and last month mouse was replaced. Which I consider minor. So overall I have a lot to catchup atleast for my home computer. I have asked ubuntu community for the feedback on hardware specs which is low but it seems that without graphics card I can still run compiz without any issues. I may not get the 3D Bit but surely there seems to be issue with the 2D. Coming back to HUD, I think in future more and more interface are going to be like HUD. As the code is in GPL, soon there are going to be some copycats and some are going to be more efficient. I can think of apple and microsoft moving in this field. They are already coming up with the tiles interface. I don't know if it is good but old types of GUIs are going to be replaced. I hope it is going for the good, touchscreens are going to change the way we live and do work. So it is going to be possible that HUD and their future implementations are here to stay? -
Ubuntu Unity Hud (Head-Up Display)
mahesh2k replied to mahesh2k's topic in Websites and Web Designing
As I said earlier MATE desktop seems to be the good alternative for the gnome and unity. You can see from their current release that MATE retains the top bar with menus. I think that is what many users are missing. If they get this back with the help of MATE then I don't think there is any problem. What I find confusing is the rewrite of the code. I mean rewriting mate desktop from scratch. I am looking forward to the MATE release in future. I just hope that they use the existing gnome 3.x code and just add the menus in the top navigation. That way many of us will get back what we lost in earlier ubuntu release due to the unity interface. I have tolerated enough of unity desktop and i don't have any plans of tolerating more keyboard stroke dependent UI -HUD. I think XFCE and xubuntu are two good options for those who are fed up of all the ubuntu and unity stuff. I guess I am going to test my productivity on each of these. I just dont like it when corporation force it on us in the name of profit and then free software groups force it on us in the name of free. It's just frustrating that none of the developers in the top hierarchy understand the common users issues. -
Facebook - Please Stop Being Greedy For Information!
mahesh2k replied to H.O.D's topic in General Discussion
I did few changes in the timeline and it seems to be working fine for me. I made category of restricted list and the family. Whenever I share something it gets sorted as per that category and it is quite safe as the sharing restriction applies. In case of restricted list they can only see what i want them to see. I find this type of restriction fair. I have also removed the "find user from search" feature. I have disabled it in order to avoid the members from searching me. I only search members based on their URLs if they notify me via email or friend of a friend. I don't think facebook is after personal information of users like google. They have a limited internet presence and are restricted to their own domain. I am scared of google which is after every keystroke and personal information. Their recent move to connect all the services to fetch more personal information is dangerous as they're not only social network but leading ad agency and share the data using google keyword tool. Google's connecting multiple profiles and friends using this feature is so annoying that I get results favored by friends which doesn't match my taste. For example, I get result of jazz and rock music where my music taste is trance. So you see google is literally digging my friends taste, my ip, my searches and other stuff which i don't want to share as i don't want salesman slapping ads on my internet experience all the time. Google or facebook both seems to be something that are scary. It's just that interaction with facebook ends if you delete the account but interaction with google remains even if you delete the account, as they use search crawlers to stalk behavior of people. Google seems to be lot greedy about information than facebook for sure. That's the reason many users are not moving to google+ as of now. Not just these two companies but other companies are also after personal information of people and asking lots of vague things in forms to understand customers more. -
Ubuntu Unity Hud (Head-Up Display)
mahesh2k replied to mahesh2k's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I thought it was just me. There is huge shift going on in between UI world. In case of windows there is already tiles interface which is more annoying than what HUD is offering to the users. I have seen that flipping the tiles waste your time. Most of the UI stuff is overrated in case of windows 8. I never thought it would someday come to the linux desktop. I was wrong with this as mark shuttleworth seems to like such ideas.I agree that it is good for the tablets but think about the desktop and laptops. I don't see a good use of this. I mean while using the word processor how you're going to figure out what is spellcheck or where is tools or tables menu. No one is going to remember that stuff just to enter in the command line. I guess this is where it goes too much. Atleast for me. I would love to know what other forum members think about this type of UI. -
I don't know if i am the only person out there hating the HUD or head up display? It is made for the typist or should I say tablet users. But it is forced onto the desktop and laptop users as well. i found that by forcing it on other users theyre trying to prove some usability point. But i dont; think there is any good benefit of using the HUD UI change. Atleast not for quick usage. Also it is like mixture of GUI and CLI forced on users who prefer point and click interface. Not sure how many windows or mac migratnts aer going to love this, personally i found it useless and not worthy for laptop or desktop usage. I do see it's importance for the tablet interface thought. You can check out the views of mark shuttleworth on this new HUD on his official blog entry. I think it is fored on multiple distros in future. Something like Xubuntu or kubuntu next in pipeline? If that happens then I guess most fo the users will migrate from the ubuntu and will move to mint or elementary OS. Some of the users of ubuntu are already suggesting others to move to elementary which is frugal and simple with their interface. You can check the video here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. Though this may impress some of you. If you're using the laptop and desktop, you can imagine how difficult it is to use the desktop while working with gnumeric, libre office and some of the other tasks where you can choose the menus with mouse and manage the combo boxes or checkboxes. I don't know if the aim is to replace all this. In any case i am not happy with HUD. What do you think about HUD?

Gmail issue with the firefox and other browsers is because of the google and not firefox. Google is forcing users to use gmail. I have noticed that experience of javascript loading is much slower in FF compared to chrome. I can compare that with other browser and see the same result. I guess it is because of the chrome. Not only that it is also taking add-on trouble like FF had. I think there are many bad things going last 2-3 versions of the FF. I can put them one by one.In any case I don't like the rapid release cycle. I mean what is the point of the release if it is slow and buggy. FF has yet to resolve the issue. It is good to see that flash is going out this year but still i would love to see HTML5 progress or else the slowness of the plugins will make ff almost unusable. Another thing is some rapid releases that makes major version changes like 3-5 and 9 are forced. I used to get the dialog box earlier but now a days it is forced upgrade and ff becomes slow in the background to force the upgrade. Not happy with at all. I used Ironbrowser these days along with opera and only issue is with ad tracker and blocker. If i get that in opera or any other browser then I am free to move to another browser.

I don't think Ubuntu is that bad. It's just that they are tampering with gnome shell more than necessary. I mean gnome 2 shell is perfect and there is no need to strip it out and replace to something like slingshot. I think gnome 3 shell is really not good at all and it just eats the memory, not worthy of user interface simplicity. If they come out with something like Mate desktop which I guess is modified in Mint linux or in it's own shell based on gnome2 then I don't mind. The very idea of replacing the interface of gnome to make it more user friendly for touch screen users, ignoring desktop and laptop users is what I find irritating. Windows 8 is going to be similar like gnome3 so it's turn off anyway. That aside, why would anyone wants to use their TV services? Are they offering something that our satellite subscription based service is not offering at all. I would love to see the comparison before opting for apple or ubuntu based tv services. I don't plan to use because I spend more time with computer instead of TV.

If you're using XAMPP or Cherecoo then you have to get dynamic IP if i am not wrong. Your VM configuration needs to be changed as well. As noted by WUTSKE above, NAT doesn't work for the local IP sharing. You have to use the bridged interface in order to test the virtual machine website on host. As for firewall, I never had issue that way, so not sure if that has to be done. Port 80 and 443 was accessible for me when I did that. So you can follow his instruction in that case if anything goes wrong. By the way you can use ampps.com or Xampp on windows for much better performance. Using virtual machine for this type of work is painfully slow, atleast it was slow for me. just my 2 cents contrib.

I am not a fan of unity and new gnome 3.4. I want the menu bar with applications, places and systems back. I can only get that with either mint or Mate desktop. I can see that they're pushing this tablet based interface on users and increasing the amount of time it gets to search for apps and other stuff. I know that google is coming in tv market along with apple and other brands. So on that front i would rather see ubuntu survive than apple or google. But usability wise i hate unity or gnome's new interface. I hope it was customizable with the menu bar options at top which is not as of now. I can't predict about the market so no idea how much this concept is going to take in future. We can only see the reaction of people online and it is not right time to release because sept to dec is the purchase spree and this may not bring much sales.

Renaming/adding File Extenstions In Windows [Solved]
mahesh2k replied to manuleka's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I don't remember if this utility works or has linux based port but on windows it works fine. I have used it to change the extension of some of my files. I think that should work. I usually prefer linux command line as it gets work done quickly compared to GUI based tools and maybe it could be just me getting comfortable with the CLI. I checked your software from the brothersoft site. I think that will also do job in case of mass batch renames and extension changing. There used to be one small utlity written in autohotkey which used to set things up for the file names, I guess it is no longer hosted so no idea about that file. Anyway, your problem seems to be solved so there is no point in finding it otherwise I could have searched it and posted the link here. I'll find and keep it in delicious thought, just in case. -
I see that they have now started working on new version. You can check out their forums for the final vesion and everything is coming out of alpha and beta. It seems that this year they might start some serious development. I know there was a lot of drama going on smf forums due to management and license issue. They have now much simple license compared to previous one. THey have also fired few folks off the forums and management and working for better terms. I guess "amcythe" user who used to manage all the SMF is out of the management and now they are purely relying on the strength of team members for the release. In any case it is too late and other forum softwares are getting stronger compared to SMF. They have lot to catch up. They did updated the forums last october 2011 but i guess from then there are no fixes and updates. It's waste to rely on SMF for corporate sites so no wonder IPB and VB are still cprefered choice of many for their site.

I am using downthemall extension for firefox and it is working fine for me. I am not using any other software system-wide for download. Most of my downloads are firefox dependent and i am fine with them. I have for long time not downloaded any service pack or anything above 300mb from the download manager. I now only use torrent for such huge files and in case of linux most of the stuff is taken care of by synaptic or adept so there is no need for the system wide download manager. As for windows I have not upgraded the system with updates from windows system updates and hotfix for quite some time. I don't think my old system is going to stand for more than 1 year so there is no point for collecting the system updates for the XP anymore and if needed there are some windows xp update packs available from third party sites which we can download. That aside, I am in search of download manager for chrome. I am using Ironbrowser on windows and linux and I need download manager to preserve the downloads. I wash the settings for browser after loging out and for the same reason I need the download manager like downthemall. Is there any download manager like that on chrome or Ironbrowser? If you know then let me know as I need that badly for some stuff which is big and it takes some time for chrome to manage.

New interface looks like apple's stolen frugal design. I mean i see a lot of stripped options in this look. I don't know why google is suddenly making frugal interface out of everything they're providing. Take case of blogger interface which is very confusing compared to old interface. Also these interface are hard to access with slow internet connection. I would love to see older interface retaining option but considering the history of enforcing the new interface this will not last for long. Soon they're going to add the interface which are boring and are hard to navigate.By the way ad blocking makes it easy to view interface if you're getting the issues with ad loading at the top. I use ghostery and add-block plus to cut down those random ads at the top of email.

Happy new year and hope everyone have a safe and prosperous new year. I enjoyed new year eve and my mind is still shaking with all the music and food. And no, i don't drink because I am the one who is driving all the time. lol I didn't played with fireworks got to rush home early due to some robbery issues that are going on in my society these days. I hope to get home secured this year, so we'll see.
-
I see that 'view new content' seems to have some issues with the loading. I am on mobile internet and using firefox 8.0 and it seems it is not ready to load. I don't know it is because of connection or something else because I tried using other ways to check the option of new content. I got all the ways to same white blank page. So I guess we need to wait for sometime before getting used to all this. I hope this gets fixed, rest of the interface looks fine to me.I see now that why most of the others are not ready to upgrade to this version as of yet. It'll be very difficult for some other forums to make navigation easier. Vb forums are the only easy to navigate as per their new design, IPB is getting more complex.

I just hope so they don't get lost. As per my observation all these years it's the opposite. As of now in case of KS it is running manually by mods. I dont know what plans opaque has for Xisto. Running mycents manual or running them like they used to be. In either case I don't expect anything positive. Yordan knows that how many times I have lost a large portion of mycent and only after with his help I have managed to recover few mycents when i talked about it in chatrooms. I just hope this doesn't happen again only to me. It's like giving ME the signals - ' go off and we are not interested in your contribution and allocating mycents'. All i'm getting these days are these type of vibes. More power to me for finding the alternatives next year.

Corel Draw and Illustrator, both but it depends on the situation. I do sketching on regular basis and for some of the sketches i need to use illustrator more than corel draw. But for logos and banner designs i found that corel draw is much better. In case of illustration, corel has it's own package called essentials. I got the free version of the essentials when i got the CD with bamboo tablet. In that essential version almost everything was there and you can almost any illustration possible that you used to do with adobe illustrator. For Linux users there is Calligra package with Krita software. It's like corel essentials but with less features as of now. They do have few identical features and is easy to use. But that is for the illustration and for those sketching purpose i have noticed with the krita. I don't know how many are here using Linux. If it's for banner and logo design then i guess corel draw is much better with cliparts and those brush and easy to use. In case of illustrator, it has lots of brushes and the stuff to do things quickly for sketches and the artistic illustration. I don't know if it is worthy to use it for the banner and the logo design. But who know with what people are comfortable with and it is pretty subjective as most of the formats are pretty much portable between these programs.

Mac has similar IDE options like windows. So most of the IDE's should work. Take case of Eclipse, it works on mac and as macs have enough RAMs with their box, i don't think you'll face any issue with the resources in case of it. Eclipse requires PDT plugin that lets you edit the php files on it. You have to download that plugin on your own from the eclipse repository in order to compile your program. By default eclipse has support for only java and additional languages require their own plugins, so it is obvious that eclipse will need plugin in order to run.Aptana is new range of IDE's which are made on top of the eclipse. They're reducing the necessary part of the eclipse and making simple IDE to run the essentials. They also support java, ruby and php in their IDE. So for sure aptana will work for you. Note - aptana has paid and free versions so look if you can do witht he free version of the IDE.Komodo a commercial IDE that lets you run python, php and perl easily. They do have a free version called edit but i don't know how much useful is that. You just have to see if it is that you need on mac. Netbeans is another free IDE that i can recommend to you but it's upto you if you're comfortable with IDE's like eclipse and netbeans for php.At the end all i can say is that if you can afford mac then it is better to buy an IDE so that you can get your work done quickly instead of hopping from one feature to another. It just saves time and lets you focus on work instead of manaing free software in its alpha behavior. Hope this helps.

How To Enable Rss Feeds RSS on a non-CMS website
mahesh2k replied to mrdee's topic in Computer Networks
In case of content management system you get to use RSS without any issues at all. You just have to either check the feed on feedburner so that you can get the address. I have done this plenty of times and found two rss feed address - one is atom and another xml feed this way. As for the static sites or the custom cms sites where you have to configure the RSS on your own. I think html2rss is one of the site that lets you use the option for the RSS. If you don't know how to create feeds then this is the way to add individual pages or entire sitemap and then making rss feed out of it.There are some tutorials on google that lets you find the rss feed for any website. As google is broken due to panda update i couldn't come up with any good tutorial. As for now i can only suggest HTML2RSS site for you. Do check feedburner by the way, it will let you find the address of the cms if you have one, if not then manually create one. -
I don't care about what software organizations and people who run bloated php code or anything about their workstations. So please excuse me, i don't want to make tangent post by replying on your post that has nothing to do with first post. I am talking about memory footprint of eclipse and netbeans which creates problem on my desktop and laptop. It is slowing down my system and i can't use them for the same reasons. Instead i am looking for PHPdesigner type of IDE which me and Q discussed earlier. I have not raised anything or any point related to bloated code and enterprise code at all. I am running this stuff from home and i am in need of IDE that solves my problem. In case of linux, i have a limited options for php development. I don't want to use IDE like eclipse and netbeans because i am low on RAM. I say it again and again, i don't want to run netbeans and eclipse. This thread is about alternative to those IDE. Another point, i can't rely on text editors with syntax highlighting because they often lack in auto completion which is needed as i want to save time in compiling. So let's get back on thread shall we ? Let me know if there is any IDE which can replace Eclipse and Netbeans and does the job of compiling PHP code and also has autocompletion.
