They are trying to minimize the menu stuff and the icon for quite some time. I mean i don't like chrome for the same reason. It needs single click to access multiple options and this is very painful. I know that compared to firefox they have a minimal set of features and interface too. But they annoy a lot because they present less options and single page looks more cluttered. As of now Firefox is in process of reaching version 11. I find it hard to maintain their useless release pattern. As I am using linux so ubuntu is saving me from the reelase cycle hell as base browser is firefox and there are hardly any updates for it. Maybe there is manual upgrade option but I am not going for it as of now. Just skipping it so far. I think with ubuntu 12/04 maybe i have to upgrade at the end of the day anyway. They have new version and lot of changes like HTML5 changes in new browser. Their javascript and html5 test console is good. It makes me want to use it on old version too but can't use it. Javascript support for the mozzila's product is quite good. I wonder why they're behind javascript compared to any other web based languages. Anyway looking forward to their apps service and mobile phone os with browser built in, on that point i'll open thread in future.

I Want To Know About Php Editors I want to know about php editors
mahesh2k replied to xhrist14n's topic in Programming
Those who are using the linux they have more choices compared to windows. Most important point about linux based editors is that they are all free and one doesn't have to pay for it. Kate, Kwrite, Gedit are free and usually come up with gnome and KDE distribution. You don't have to do anything in order to download them, they're most likely found in the system menu of the distro. In case of paid applications, I think sublime editor which is paid for windows, linux and mac is popping up for quite some time. I think in next few years it will be more popular due to it's features. The interesting feature about the program is that they show a screenshot in parts for the code view in sidebar. Say if you have 2-3 scrolling pages for the code, you can view it in thumbnail screenshot in sidebar and choose to navigate it with mouse.Sublime text as of now is actively developed for windows and Mac. I am sure there is linux version of it and if not then surely they are going to add similar features in say like geany or gedit. That text editor is worth to look into as there are some nice set of features in it. I am trying to run the php designer under WIne and see if it works. I have 7 version of php designer and it shows a bit lag so maybe i need to get my hands on old version to run it on linux. -
If you're using wordpress then there are quite some plugins that let you host the data. I have seen the rackspace and the jungledisk also has the wordpress plugin support. As they are quite popular so the hosting is easy with them. All you need to do is just supply the username and the password in the wordpress plugin and you get the backup on schedule. It is possible to do that in wordpress. So SQLite, mysql and any other type of database backup is possible with the CMS based tutorials. If you're doing the local data backup for your web server or say XAMPP or for the local drive then you can check some of the linux backup softwares. I think there are plenty to choose from. Just check with others what they're using on the particular distro and then you can go ahead and use it. Most people are using either debian or the red hat based distros, so it's possible to find softwares for these distros. Another thing about backup is that one can simply use the USB HDD and then take the backup. It is also cheap compared to the online backup. It just works in some cases. I think if you can safely keep the USB HDD then i don't think online database backup is necessary at all.

Welcome to the club. I have HP 2500Twith similar problem. I have blank screen with functional boot and OS, HD and i can hear the login screen or splash screen sound too. So just only the screen is screwed. The pavilion series is quite buggy and HP is not going to do anything about it. If you take it to the service center, they are going to charge very heavily. Try some of these if it works.1) Bend your lappy screen 120 deg and see if it shows the screen while boot up, if not then you have to fix inverter wire and supply to the screen.or2) You can remove the battery and directly connect the lappy to supply (just to test if battery side is short or not). If yes, then you got issue with connections related to battery to these other parts. If not, problem is something different.or3) Check if the charger plug is incompatible which sometimes cause such issues. I suggest checking with another pin if it works you know what is the problem. Not directly related to the screen but could lead to short of inverter wire.or4) Check motherboard and most likely here is the problem. You have to pay for some of the fixes which usually costs anywhere between 250-300$(not worth it considering you can buy new machine by adding few more dollars). So it is your choice, to either fix or buy new machine. I have machine dead for quite sometime. I suggest you to checkout the issue with service station because mot likely there is hardly anything you can do about it. There are some videos on youtube that shows some of the common fixes which never worked for me. But who knows it could work out for you. I suggest you to check them out and see if any of these work for you. Most likely minor issues or fixes could help to fix the black screen issue.

I agree but the thing about the restart and shutdown is that it is mostly unpredictable. I also noticed that if the HD is removed and only livecd or usb linux is run result is the same. So this must be mix of HD and the CPU heat issue. Not sure why it freezes with black screen and refuses to show anything. Is it related to something like say, motherboard issue? Like capacitors issue?I found that some of the Tom's hardware forum members had similar issue for their old P4 machines. So it is quite obvious that this is going to be common for many those who have such old machines. But still I have managed to hold the machine in condition for quite sometime and I wish to keep it that way for next year or atleast December this year.Puppy linux trick is that I want to keep OS on usb and want to use it for some emergency work like connecting to the internet, pay bills, contact urgently and few other tasks. I don't know if there are any disk utils in the puppy linux distro which can solve the bad sectors issue. If there are any such then I am going to use it for finding and fixing the bugs. Hope that will solve this issue.
-
I am in similar situation with bad sectors and finding all the way I can to remove them or atleast map them to separate from the working file. I have noticed that memtest is starting regularly by linux before startup to check the files and the hd health. So i guess disk is on it's way to going to trash but so far letting me type here and working on it.Most of the forums related to linux and hardware tells you that once they start to appear they rarely go away. If you have blackout or electricity issue then surely you'll catch the bad sectors in future. There is no way to skip them. Just have to use the backup for power and then allow the min 5 toshut down or atleast not shutdown due to electricity fail.I have seen some tools like fsck and other which are run from the command line but they rarely help to remove the bad sectors. If you have got them then i guess you should consider looking for another HD and that way you can simply switch to another hd. Use the bad sector one for testing and random stuff which is not serious work.

I just applied the thermal paste to the processor sink and now it is so far under control. Only thing is that the behavior of the freezing is not at all stopped. It takes some time to freeze but does get freeze after say 15 or so minutes. But atleast it is letting me restart and start over. And I guess unless i get some decent backup of another laptop or pc, this thing is staying this way.Another thing is that after checking the disk with gparted i have noticed some bad sectors. Actually errors related to some diagnostic test. But most of the time memtest and the startup tests are going okay. But i am sure this constant restarting after some time is going to develop the bad sectors one or the other way inside the disk. Not sure what to do with it as of now.I am currentyly in process to look for bad sector repair utlity in linux. No success so far. Also my puppy linux setup is not done yet so that is one more odd thing yet to work out. So if this is not the heat and CPU issue by the end, it could be hard disk issue along with minor heat issue. So have to fix the HD with bad sector repairs. Maybe i can use puppylinux on usb and then remove those bad sectors. Might work who knows.

Official hardware requirement for the Windows 8 is not out yet. Atleast not for the final release. I see some of the developer and consumer preview systems running on 512 mb and 1gb but sitl not sure how to think about this new slideshow metro crap. I guess disabling it will save a lot of time and increase the productivity of the users.I will not test firefox in such case. Because the base app itself it very high and takes a lot of amount of resources. So maybe something like chrome or opera are much light in comparison to firefox. Also the net should be no issue even under the Vmware. I think it takes vmware quite fine in my opinion. Just not sure why it lags even if you allot some decent ram.

I have this machine HP DV 2500T which was very noisy. No wonder it died due to overheat and the screen issue. I think that was the problem related to the hardware issue. I think such type of fauly laptops also make a lot of noise. In my case that laptop was the one to make too much noise. I know that most of the time it is not quite easy to see such laptops. This one was special, gifted and blessed. It showed all the signs of faulty hardware. I am sure that there are some weird laptops out there with some high end configuration. I can think of alienware in that category. I think those are also noisy laptops because of the made of games features. On board sound system is also good but noisy. If we compare on case basis with laptops then yes some of them can be less or more noisy than PC.

When I was running Windows XP on this machine. I allocated 512mb to ubuntu and remaining 1gb was given to host. I don't think windows needs 4g RAM for host. In fact old windows versions can run fine with small linux distros on 256 and host windows running on 512mb RAM. If you're running under linux then I guess it can even run for more RAM for guest. Most of the time if the linux is under xfce or other window manager then surely it won't take much RAM. In that case it is better to assign moreram. But I never run two vms at a time on linux for many reasons. One is i have never found the usefulness of running the VM side by side atleast for my work. I would like to see if there are any such situations where I have to do that. By the way, I am sure that this feature for L2 Cache will come soon on Virtualbox. I am using that on xubuntu as of now. It is simple and works great. I am sure it is not a replacement for the vmware but it is nice virtual machine software for linux users.

WIndows XP was made for USB 2GB by one of the hacker group and hosted on old 9down site AFAIK. I don't know if those images still exist. Those were illegal hacks but are hacks that worked nonetheless. There is also barts boot cd which shows how to make window based live cds for win98/2k/. I am not sure if there are windows xp version of those boot cds. As the methods were illegal many people preferred to take down those files and tutorials. The reason apple and windows don't want to make USB or LIve cd for their OS is by doing that they are going to lose the business. Both windows and mac have secure boot feature which restricts emulation of installed OS on another drive. I am not sure how much microsoft plans to have cd/dvds anymore. If they allow network installation then surely cds/usb for installation will not be possible. There was a news for windows 8 usb or handy soft installation but not much coverage by many people due to rants around metro UI.

Thanks for the thermal paste suggestion. I think i am going to go with that option for now. I don't know If i can get the fan for the CPU but surely i have to find atleast one over ebay. I tried and didn't find any fan for P4. By the way isn't blowing the fan directly onto the CPU with going to create pressure issue for the heatsink fan? i mean two fan with wind in opposite direction could create pressure over board. I do think there should be some distance and could be used to throw the air on entire motherboard instead and that way it could help.

Elementary Os - Ubuntu Fork Only Less Annoying
mahesh2k replied to mahesh2k's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I am not surprised yordan. I have that windows logo key not working for me on this old machine. But ever since i switched to xubuntu i don't need that key. I do agree that too much gaming and typing usually kills the keyboard. lol @manuleka. I agree that tablet is not a good deal to me. What I found weird is that just because few consumers (take females and casual users who never interact with full screen displays and keyboard much) are using more tablets, whole windows and linux designer teams are assuming that touch display is the future. This is where i strongly disagree. The reason I disagree with tablet interface is that many DE's in linux are heavily moving to tablet. I mean except xfce, lxde, awesome and few other DE's made for BSD/UNIX/Linux, other DE's like KDE, GNome and mainstream DE's are gone into tablet hype already. Is that good especially if you;re productive over their old interface? No. Is xfce and other simple interface are productive and eye-candy? no. does that make you feel using windows 98? yup :DReading kindle book is casual usage, it's not work. Reading blogs and newspaper on tablet is not work, it's casual usage. Now just because more people are buying tablets for that type of use, does that mean power usage is lowered? no. Does that mean tablet interface should be priority over desktop? no but we can't convince managers. The reason design world is flawed is because mangers are trying to find balance of money and accessibility. I also agree with last sentence of yordan. From what i see in linux world, they are heavily replacing simplicity with so-called accessibility of tablet interface and this makes others who are not interested to use single itnerface for all tasks. So why we every DE is striving for tablet? it's too early to switch to tablet. We're not even in the decade where touch or hologram displays are cheap, so forcing it on consumers and workplace users is what i don't like. -
Yes. it is running on-board graphics. As this is old mahcine and graphic cards were expensive for me during that time so i never added anything to it and gone with the onboard setup. The thing is that any graphical activity and window pausing for few seconds is likely to cause CPU heating. What could be solution to this? 1. Replacement of fan?2. Using some cooler?3. Using additional fan near?I really want to save this machine beyond 10 years because right now. I have just one more laptop and don't have plans or funds to invest into new machine. So looking for a way to reduce CPU heating.

Elementary Os - Ubuntu Fork Only Less Annoying

That's the point. We don't type gently on laptop pad or keyboard and still they manage to stay with us for longer than 8 years. My current keyboard on old mahcine is working fine for 9 years and this august it will 10th year. So is that possibility exist for tablet or touch screen? No. Because I have seen samsung mobiles touch display going down after heavy usage of about 9-10 months. We can't restrict usage and just use these devices for watching and occasional clicking, isn't it?Thing with iphone display is that it is expensive and the amount of research and the lifespan guarantee offered is high compared to phones that are made on cheap cost. We cant expect linux on device which has heavy usage lifespan of 6-10 months. Occasional youtube watching, comment typing and stuff will hardly break the display but usage where you have to do a lot of writing stuff like you do with laptop will surely break it's lifespan. Answer to your question is: yes. I am looking for heavy usage because most of my work is heavy and i rarely do some small tasks. The topic we are getting into is the direction that linux community is taking by assuming tablets future. So that's why i am comparing touch devices with current one on heavy usage scale. -
I have this problem with old my PC which is seldom use for linux work. My old PC configuration is Pentium 4 2.0GHZ, 1.2GB DDR1 RAM. It has xubuntu installed on it. It rarely hangs but when i do something graphical work the screen freezes or restarts or hangs the mahcine. I do noticed some bad sectors on disk and that makes it more problematic but still that is not the real issue. If i remove the hard disk and run the pen drive linux (puppy linux) on 1gb drive and work on it, same stuff happens. CPU gets heated during graphical work and restarts. I know it is old computer and could have issues with modern graphic libs but even small low graphic version linux or windows xp experienced the same issue. Even running live linux cd and then using some graphical outputlike screensaver also freezes or hangs the system.I think this could be because of the CPU fan speed reduction which increases heat but i am not sure about it. I also don't know if i can get fan for this brand of processor. I am searching in ebay so hoping to find it. What do you think could be the issue?

Elementary Os - Ubuntu Fork Only Less Annoying

I don't 1% of the people are into programming or manipulating stuff on computer. That amount is high, people into workforce are more into big displays and higher power comptuer. We don't see tablets replacing desktops in stockmarket workplace or publishing house. isn't it? I think that is the thing which is important here. We're assuming that people are not doing office work or manipulating images and hence we think 99% are into consumer mode that is simply not true.I mean if we go to shopping mall and see the computer of accountant then surely that is less likely to be tablet because of the power of processing. Tablet falls short and also risks the point of portability. Some of the machines are meant to remain the workplace and are not supposed to be moved away from the desk. In case of salesman they benefit from tablet because they can show catalog and prices and stuff. So there are some places where tablet will replace laptop or desktop but there are many areas where tablets are less likely to even enter as usable product. I think the day tablets become more powerful with processing and have enough display lifespan to stand for the keystrokes then surely it will change. That is one more thing where we need to see how linux is going to adapt. -
Gmail Inbox Highlighting Unread Messages
mahesh2k replied to manuleka's topic in Websites and Web Designing
In case of IE the interface is similar to opera and chrome. I guess you have to use the tab unread. I think that is what it says. Once you click on that then it will open unread message even if they are old. I think there is also one tab for the really important messages which are also unread and what google thinks as urgent or important. Can you upload the screenshot of inbox by hiding the messages and email id details? Just show the tabs that are available to you via new interface. If that is kind of troubling you on IE then i have another method. You can use m.gmail.com interface. This interface is minimal and lets you browse read and unread and starred messages more quickly. If nothing works use that mobile interface. It opens just fine on desktop or laptop browser and it will show you the unread messages in your inbox. Hope this helps you solve the issue. -

You mean using those docks and attaching the keyboard and mouse? Hmm, how many people at workplace can do that? This applies to some managers and higher profile people where they talk more and work less on machine. Can a programmer use that comfortably? no. the reason is because of the screen and the arm processor strength for processing programming tools and compilation. Same case applies to CAD and office use. Only a small portion of work can be done with the tablet and not the workplace machine. That means people who *actually* work typing for hours and editing images all day where even minute pixel needs attention. So for that tablet isn't productive, in fact it is more of a burden. Here typography and the display size is equally important. Arm processors are not yet powerful to handle photoshop or GIMP for operating on 100MB+ image for hours. When your work becomes on the go, then that is not a work and the device falls into consumer device and not work device. Kindle tablet, ipad all are consumer devices. They are not the computers that we use for programming, office work and other important stuff. Tablets do the minor job of social networking and mail checking, formal typing stuff and thats all. -

If we look at the ipad and the samsung tablet and compare our current working then you'll get the idea. Try typing my first post in this thread on ipad or other tablet and see your fingers and also look at the tablet. If you do that for 4 months, tablet will then stop responding because of it's lifespan will be over. You know we have to look at it as consuming device. The thing is that many people are assuming that soon it will replace keyboard and mouse. That is not true.Consuming devices like tablets are good with power but they have some limitations due to their low lifespan. We are yet to reach the age where the tablet screens are cheap and also effective enough to replace keyboard and mouse. I don't think this is going to be the case in next 2 years. That is the reason i don't subscribe to tablet as future theory. In case of elementary they're assuming one task at a time is being more productive. That is also not true. You have given some good multitasking jobs examples in earlier post. So looking at all those things surely tablets as a future is horrible theory atleast for the power computer users and those who do the work on computer all day. Elementary developers have made many assumptions in this case. -

I don't think this is direction of entire open source or linux. It's just bunch of window managers like gnome and OS forks like elementary that are interested into this. You will some weird productivity related argument on elementaries website. I don't know how come these people are even building OS with one thing at a time. I just found out that it is totally weird.I don't see XFCE, lxde and other window managers in that directions. Other people are aware of this thing but they are optimistic towards the future of tablets or touch screen based displays. I don't know how touch screen are going to be more productive. I see them being more slow and low life span device. I mean with current keyboard and mouse have more lifespan but that is not the case with touchscreen.Elementary is assuming that "save state" and touch based displays are the future and they are beating down the productivity stuff on users. I don't know how many users are really going to stick with them after these changes. Those with functional computers and lot of time are less likely to stay with them. I just hope gnome gets back to 2.32 and OS like elementary becomes better in design. -
I see that there are rare updates to the mycents and unless asked by the members, the updates are not made. Sometimes updates are made after 1 or 2 weeks and possibly even more time than that. If we don't ask for it then I guess there is no way we can get updates. That is the plain truth. So I made this thread in the hope that this will bring mycent issue to admins. Why this thread? As updates are manual and given by some super moderators/mods/admins(even though denied by admins on this fact, if it were automated it is not going to take 2 weeks to calculate mycent which was only 2-4 hours few years back), there is no way to get update unless manually initiated or unless if the script is fixed for automatic mycent update. Creating new ticket asking for mycent update is not a good idea in this case, and while browsing forums from mobile, it's hard to even create ticket in support section. I am only making this thread to bring it to attention of admins, that mycents update is pending. My intention is to help others and myself get mycents when there are no updates (not even manual updates) posted on forums. So when there are no mycent updates, I hope other members will bump this thread and will request (or beg, whichever applies these days) mycents from the admins. So this week's mycents are pending, I am going to bump this thread once again, to beg for mycents, hope admins listen to that and do the mycents update.Thank you.

No. They are trying to make use of "save state" concept. For example when it comes to mobile devices we use one app or one task at a time. That way multi-tasking is removed from the focus of arm processor. Other than audio in the background and some random diagnostic apps, we don't run important apps as per their assumption. That is how bizzare this concept is, it's like going back in medieval ages in computers. The save state concept makes use of launcher for launching (maximizing) apps one at a time. Closing to the launcher (close for us) and saving state. That is how they are trying to work on it. Already the minimize button is removed in many of the Gnome GTK apps. I think more are likely to follow in next update. I don't know why everyone is so obsessed with apple type of one button and one app thingy, but this is what is coming our way.You can read about this change in elementary as they're hacking gnome for their own usage. There are many changes to the new version, also known as Luna. I am not going to revert back to them. I know for one, I like customization and this type of restriction, one app at a time is surely not for me. So I am going to skip this one but still keeping tab on their site to see what they're upto. Linux world is interesting, sometimes odd changes but interesting in any case. -

Can we have another thread for requesting mycent updates for this forum? I am asking this because every week or so, when most of us post we have to wait a lot for the mycent update. Surely they are now manual on both KS and Asta considering the slowest update. I don't know how tiresome it is to ask for update via support ticket every time. Why not just have another official thread from mod "Request mycent update" as title. So when mycents are stalled for week or for more than that, just post on that thread begging for mycent, and maybe we members might get few here and there if there is anyone listening at top. -

Yes. They wanted to mimic the Mac OS and failed miserably in it. I know why that happened. I think they assumed a lot about the OS and made changes unnecesarily. Just because gnome is removing the close and minimize button they are also taking things seriously and trying to force one app at a time rule on entire OS. I guess that is very bad decision from the elementary team.Another thing about the XFCE, yeah I tried that and I do agree that in terms of performance they are good. I know mint is also keeping LXDE version for the same reason. They are much faster compared to the gnome and the untiy version of the gnome. But I guess both high speed and low speed type of desktops should be there. So i don't have much against unity anymore, there will be some people using that. It's just elementary that is bugging me. I wanted to install it for some friends and considering the amount of pain that is causing, i am taking my actions back. I have no plans on installing that OS anymore on friends desktop, let alone ever on my own desktop. But i do look forward to xfce being better in terms of looks.
