  1. People always think things are getting worse and generally they tend to get better. It is too bad that we don?t have good measures of the quality of education to see if things are getting better or worse.
  2. I have always felt Google is the best but never really researched the issue. That said there is a lot of room for improvement as more advanced techniques are used to index the data. For instance data mining techniques heavily based on artificial intelligence. For Google to stay on top it will have to adapt with future technology and if it fails to stay on the leading edge it will fall just like any other high tech company that fails to stay on top.
  3. You can use the quote tag so you don?t look like you are trying to cheat the hosting credit system. If you blame the audience for bombing you probably will never make much of a comic.
  4. I think it more of a fashion thing then a technology thing. It is interesting question though as to the extent technology will influence the fashion of the future. I don?t think that lights will have a place in tomorrows fashion as they are not that impressive in bright light and they could ruin any type of atmosphere set by dimmer lighting. However, for some night activities such as say skiing though the woods cloths that produce light might catch on with a few people.
  5. I?m not asking if you would pay millions of dollars for the Mona Lisa. I asked how much would you pay. Make it hypothetical and say you can buy it but not sell it. For starters I?d atleast pay a few 100 for a Mona Lisa as you would pay that much for a reasonable sized painting from a talented local artist. I suppose a large part of what you will pay will depend on your disposable income. So maybe we should phrase it in terms of percentage of disposable income. A weeks worth of disposable income for the Mona Lisa would seem like a no brainier for me. However, I might rather a Van Gough.
  6. I might by it in the future and put it my future study. In my opinion it is art. How much would you pay for the Mona Lisa?
  7. Yeah, I would say he should of put it in quotes. As I don't think a number is worth hosting credits. Let me figure out how to deduct him hosting credits.
  8. I replaced the poem with a link to your other post as there is no need to post the same poem twice even though you arent rewarded hosting credits for posting in the vent anyway. Anyway, did the kiss really suck or just the fact that you felt let down afterwards. As for saying he is only thinking of himself, well what should he be thinking of serving you? Okay, maybe Im being slightly rude but of course he was thinking of you in some way if it was nothing more then, I bet it would be really nice to kiss her.
  9. Sad? Not really it is natural to enjoy a kiss. Also peoples first experiences can seem so significant even if they are not. Besides that, there is not really much to say as I know nothing else about the situation and you didn?t ask for any advice. Anyway, I hope the next time you kiss someone it will be even better (not sure how much you kissed before).
  10. You get paid 100 grand an hour? In that case can I borrow 100 grand? I think with that much money I'll stay and do my PHD. I am just finishing my masters now and starting to get tired of being in debt. One hours of your wage and I am out of debt and will be able to live cheaply (20 k per year) for about 5 years.
  11. It is not only to keep the air circulating it is also to keep dust out of it. I use to use it on my lap or on a blanket and it wasn?t long before it would start overheating and shutting down regardless of where it was. Later I found out that if you use can use a can of air to blow out any dust that is around the heat sink. Since then it has been working much better.
  12. I keep a book under my laptop so that it breaths better.
  13. If I recall correctly the amount of prime numbers up to a number n is approximately a logarithmic function. So there are always larger and larger prime numbers they just get exponential further apart. There were some comments in other posts about the usefulness of computing the largest prime number. Can I ask, ?Is it useful to win a foot race?? The likely answer is no. However, the conditioning needed to win the race is important. In the same sense what is important is not so much the computation of the largest prime but the techniques used to find it.
  14. I?m surprised no one said fridge. And to get some mileage on it make it a pimped up fridge with a TV screen that doubles as a computerm picture phone, a water purification unit, game system and sound system, an electric lighter and packed with food. As for Buffallo?s earlier comment that he didn?t know there could be a desert island. Well, perhaps he is right but it seems to be a common expression. Anyway just because there is water near by doesn?t mean there is a lot of rain. For instance what about an island in the middle of the Nile river?
  15. How does the speed of firewire compare with USB2. If I recall correctly USB2 is 50 times as fast as the original USB. Also a lot more people have USB ports then firewire ports.
  16. And you've only spent 1/5 yh of it. I wouldnt build several houses. I would have a home, a ski shallot and a cottage. I proably wouldnt spend more then half a mill on each one. I suppose I could get second home in florida or something but I am not really that in to golf. As for homes other places I see nothing wrong with hotels. I dont think because you have the money you need to waste it. That is just my opinion. Although if I was to waste it I could live a cruise boat. lol
  17. Conspiracy? More like an aptitude test. They figure people smart in the game will be smart soldiers and have good hand to eye coordination. They can recruit you all you want but they can?t make you sign.
  18. Well, I don?t know if I would need a billion dollars. I figure 20 million is good enough to live off. So at 20 million that would go 50 ways. I have 5 people in my immediate family, 6 kids on my dads side and 5 kids on my moms side. So, that gets 20 million to about 14 people. I would never have more then 6 kids (I probably would only have 2 or 3) but I will keep enough to give 6 kids their own 20 million. Thus I have gotten to 20 of the 50 ways I would plan to divide the 50 billion. I would donate a large amount to both the electrical and mechanical departments of engineering at the university of new Brunsick. Why not give each department 20 million. There is a mountain near my where my parents are from 20 million should be more then enough to develop it an awesome ski resort. I would also donate 20 million to the mars society. So that takes care of 23 ways of the 50 ways I would divide the 20 billion. So let me give 20 billion to the lung society, 20 to heart and stroke, 20 to cancer research and 20 million to aids research. I am now up to 27/50 of the 1 billion dollars. I am not sure what I would do with the rest. A billion dollars is really much more money then I could ever imagine spending or even giving away for that matter.
  19. The technology might not be as revolutionary as you think. Optical switches may be faster but they tend to be bigger and consume more power. You future PC will likely not be built by all optical components. However, optical components allow faster linking between components of you computer and this could create very interesting multiprocessing capabilities inside your PC.
  20. I believe it was Leonardo Da Vinci that said technology is an extension of the hand (At least that is what he said on the Startreck holadec lol). So by that logic we have been part technology since man first started using tools.
  21. Seems to me that you aren?t very far ahead without a clean method to produce the hydrogen. The method of the future will be nuclear fusion and fission in the more near term. Wind, solar and hydro will help some although hydro isn?t really that clean it is just cheap solar is too expensive now and wind isn?t that reliable.
  22. People talk about how this could discourage people from exercise. However, with cybernetics that are advanced enough you could work on a computer just by thinking about it, you could do work while say running on a tread mill, going for a bike ride or doing the dishes. Anything that could make me as an individual more productive I say is a big plus. If I could get my school work done say while going on a hike though nature that would be awesome. and it would make school a much more enjoyable experience.
  23. Russia would be a good example of this right . Anyway as another example take a country like the united states and compare property values with crime rates.
  24. One last thing I have to talk about is a irresponsible statement in this threadExcuse me? You mean if I am in poverty than I'm not responsible for my actions? Poverty is never the reason for a crime. People making choices are reasons crime happens. That has to be one of the most socially irresponsible suggestions I have seen in a while. 1064327739[/snapback] It is called desperation. Desperate people do desperate things. If someone can’t pay the bills they can’t feed themselves are they suppose to go hungry? I agree that many poor people will hold there moral principles high no matter how much they suffer but not everyone is that strong. The easier life is for people the less likely they will look for an and easy way out. Some people think there situation is so bad that they would rather be in prison then on the streets. At least in prison you get shelter and 3 square meals a day. If you don’t believe me then check the statistics. Look at the employment rate vs the crime rate. See if there is any correlation.
  25. The key to dramatically lowering the cost to deliver mass to LEO is either a reusable rocket or a space elevator. It would take a significant amount of development and add considerable risk to the VSE. Also a reusable rocket will probably not be able to deliver the necessary mass to LEO for mission to the moon or mars. NASA makes up less the 1% the budget of the united states. It is a small portion of the budget but an important portion to send. If America falls behind in investing in science and engineering then other nations will take the lead and America will be left behind. The economy of the united states is as large the economy of Europe. And the nations of Europe do not match NASA in investment per capita in there space agencies. It is possible that Russia, china or Europe may beat the united states in the return to the moon but they do not have the same resources at their disposal. Also although international cooperation can lower costs it can also create problems as we have seen in the case of the international space station. Some issues included incompatibility of hardware, one nation holding the entire program hostage because they are responsible for a key part of it, loss of national pride and having to share the gains in prosperity and technology with the other countries participating. So in short the US could cooperate with other nations in the return to the moon but it may not help the success of the program and yield the maximum benefits form the initiative to the people of the united states.
