  1. Thats why I asked about the DNA test. A DNA test could be used to tell if it is a different species. I thought you could do DNA tests on bones or fossils. Wasnt that the premise behind Jurassic Park? BTW can you have a different species of humans? Were Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal different species or different races. I no you can have defferent species of primates. Any biology people here? How about a different species of hominid. Would that be correct?
  2. After consulting other places, someone said the lazy way to set this stuff up is to download indigo perl. I went to the site and found that they already have a bunch of stuff put together. You download perl mod_perl, apache and php and my sql as one. I then tried running the test files and noticed that the first line in printenv.pl was: #!c:/Perl/bin/Perl.exe While the first line in helloschi.pl was: #!perl I changed the first line in printenv.pl to #!perl and found it worked. The php test worked after uncommenting the dll in the configure file that they suggested. However mysql.pl didnt work. Oh, well at least I got something working now. I wonder if I my previous instillation was correct and all I had to do is change the first line. I assume the first line says what prompt command to use to call perl.
  3. Shouldn?t they be able to tell if it is a new species with a DNA test?
  4. Okay, thanks for all the help so far. I still am not successful. I tried typing http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ This is the demo perl script that comes with apache. It said I wasnt configured properly. I downloaded PXperl, because I thought I might need a version of perl on my computer. It still didnt work. I also downloaded mod_perl-1.29 because I thought you might need this to run perl on apache. I tried installing it by going to its director in the command prompt and typing: perl makefile.pl I get some errors like: Cant open perl script \lib/ExtUtils/xsuppp: No such file or directory. (You get this message, because MakeMaker could not find \lib\CORE\perl.h) I am not sure what the second error means but I know \lib/ExtUtilsxsupp exists in PXperl. Is it no included in the search path properly of all perl scripts. How might I included it? Remember I am using windows XP if that helps.
  5. Even as moderators I hope we are still learning about what is the best for the form. I am a new moderator and I think I only have been a member since the seventh of December. I thank you for you suggestion. I did do a search for apache and found nothing . I must of spelled it wrong. I think this topic is still relevant because it is good to know of more then one source of information. Snlidldude topic testing scripts using the command prompt. I might prefer the graphical user interface. Also it is centered around php but I am going to try Perl first since I have a book on Perl and not php. That said snlidudes tutorial looks good and I will have to read it. Thank you very much. This seems like the most important information to start. I tried this and found that apache came with a fair bit of documentation. For some reason I couldnt find this documentation from the help menu. Perhaps they need to work on there help menu.
  6. I have just downloaded Appache because I wanted to test some multi-user web based games, lean some perl and php. Unfortunately I have no idea where to start. I don?t even know how to do the most basic thing like access a webpage though internet explorer on my own computer using Appache as an intermediately. What am I suppose to configure, where am I suppose to put the files, what I am suppose to type in the browser. Once I get that under control I would like to try some PHP and perl. I saw a tutorial for cgi so maybe once I get buy stage one I will be alright on my own.
  7. Well, kids watch television to so by that logic it is sic that they are on television. Playboy shows nothing more then nudity. Should we be ashamed of our bodies. Should we think it is sic if we are excited by an attractive body. I would be more concerned by myself if it didn?t have any effect on me. I find it very strange the notion that porn is somehow going to pervert our mind and turn us all into sexual deviants. Studies have shown the beneficial aspects of porn. Were do we equate the fact that if someone sees the image of something sexual that it is going to make the viewer go out and have lots of sex. I bet if you did a study you would find that people that watch porn are less sexually promiscuous. Why? Because if people wanted to do something they would go out and do it instead of watch it. There is a difference between fantasy and reality. The second a fantasy becomes reality it loses its appeal. And just because people watch something doesn?t even mean they are fantasizing about it. It could be curiosity, visual appeal, hummer etc. If kids don?t get playboy, they will look at the sports illustrated swimsuit addition, the victory secrete catalog or the sears catalog. They will set the timer on there VCR and download sex seans from movies. Kids going though puberty get aroused easy and it is a time in there life when they are discovering themselves. Kids younger then that aren?t going to understand the pictures anyway. They will look at it and say so what. Or grouse. I picture of bodies in a car crash I am sure would have much more of an effect on a kid then naked pictures ever will. That all said just because porn does not have any serious effect on the viewer we don?t need to plaster it everywhere. I support Xisto effort to control the content of this site so that it appeals to a wider audience. I respect others right to teach there kids the porn is evil. Because not everyone shares the same views as me, I think it is good that Xisto does not allow pornography or profanity. This makes the site appeal to a much wider audience and prevents it from being blocked from services like net nanny. Also I sometimes think that porn is a very cheap form of marketing. I find the way Britney Spears music is marked to twelve year olds much sicker then playboy will every be. At least playboy is honest about what it is and is not trying to be a role model for 12 year olds. PS, I have a kid that was watching porn who was under 13, I would tell them not to do it. If they did it a lot I would wonder way. I might be concerned I don?t know. Maybe I would take them to consoling or something to see if they are normal. The shrink would probably just tell me it was healthy curiosity I guess?.And just to keep track of what they watch or what games they play. So I guess a big part of it is the parents responsibility. Some day, hopefully I will have kids and understand what it is like to be a parent.
  8. Now that army system started taking up to much of the processing power on the server I am going to have to rethink about how to mitigate that problem. If I ever start play around with an army system, here are some solutions I might try: Use more client side procession (might be possible with the use of some encryption scheme or error checking). Limiting the number of users (Perhaps an invite system?) . Add computer players (This would add to the server side processing but reduce the communication bandwidth). I was thinking perhaps the computer players could be optimized via a genetic algorithm. The more successful the computer player the less likely it will be reset. The best computer players will be archived and used as parents for future computer players.
  9. Sounds good GM . You are way ahead of me on the curve on this one. I too would like to play around with the army system code to see how I could modify it. Of course stage one is to run the army system and to do that I have to first download apache. Do you enojoy doing this buy your self or would you like to develop it as a team. Maybe if I ever get going we could share code and graphics and stuff.
  10. It is almost hard to believe it is a real picture. I can?t believe how much that snake can stretch.
  11. Becca how old are you? Wasnt it 14? I would be surprised if there were many people younger then 14 that are supper experts at the computer. They might know how to use it as a tool, but they probably dont know much about how it works and the theory behind languages and various pieces of software. I dont know if I would recommend computers to people as a career or not. I am not sure how good the job market or pay is. A person has to make a living but the must also like what they do. There are many trade jobs that might be a better investment then university at least in the short term. However, by going that route a person misses out on the intellectual development a university may provide. The nice thing about a computer related job is that in theory you can do it anywhere, wherever you bring your laptop. Be it a car a plain a lawn chair or perhaps even at the beach. Personally I hope some day they have a brain computer interface and then I will no longer have to stare at this stupid screen. I dont think you will ever get away from competition unless you sell your self short. The world is such that basically everyone is replaceable and redundant. It makes society a powerful fault tolerant machine that will grow learn and develop to an even more powerful machine.
  12. For the races how about some combination bonuses like mistif (spy and attack), force (attack, defense), covert (spy and sentry), protection (sentry and defense), passivism (sentry, defense and casualties). On issue wouldn?t the somewhere in the gamming (perhaps the army system) or programming (perhaps game programming) form be a more appropriate place for this topic?
  13. Notice that the time difference is equal to the current time multiplied by the unit time$time2 = $time.$time_unit;If the current time is the numbers of hours the game has been running and the unit time is increased then the time would be proportionally increased. This would cause the game to jump ahead in time. So the question remains as to whether changing the unit time will change the variable time accordingly or leave it unchanged.
  14. Okay, I dont know php, put looking at the code so far it looks like the main functions in the game are in the file army.php. Near the first the class army is defined army. Each member in the game I assume when they play has an instance of the class army. It has the properties, $page_title, $nav, $output, $currency, $max, $html, $member, $inv, $all_inv, $sql_class. I am not sure what any of these things do. Darn lack of comments. There is a strange bit of code that is commented out: // Maximum values // siege = max['maxsiege'] // fort = max['maxfort'] // unit production = max['maxprod'] // spy level = max['maxspy']There is a method called auto_run(), which must intiate some kind of thread that runs while you are playing. Is there threads in php. Okay, that is enough for now.
  15. I just download the army system code because I was curious if it would be better to modify the existing code or rewrite a new game. The code can be download at: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I started a discussion about creating a new game at: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/20398-a-home-grown-army-system/ I created this discussion to help dissect the code and understand what it works. From what the army system does it looks needles complicated. But perhaps there is a lot of extra stuff there for administrator options. The discussion is created to try understand how the army system works. Not knowing php, this will be a formidable task for me I would appreciate any help.
  16. It looks good, but I find the text hard to read against the background.
  17. It seems that people are starting new topics for there own poems. So here is one I wrote today well wasting time starting at the army system lol. :blink:On A Mountain LedgeHours, tick awayThe sand sinks grain by grainTime is like waterRunning though my fingersI stare and ponderWaiting watchingUntil my time has come. What this hour could have beenWhat this second never wasLife is for the wastingOf opportunities which could of begunThe hum of the computer fanThe persistent noise of tvThe silience of nothingMark the empty day.Mindless drivel on the internetGosop of others livesWhat substance we whish to avoidBrings silence to our mindsPast scars that never healMissed turns on the road of lifeDriving with our eyes closedHopping to get it rightNever getting youngerAlways running low on gasWhen will realize The effort we have lacked10 books in a month10 miles ran per day200 lines of code And not without partyOr playThe full life is never easyHalf of it we lostHalf that still could comeIf we get off our bumMost of us are far from perfectTasks which we learned by wroughtRoutines we follow day to dayCan be thoughtless, effortless slumpsTo be modest and no it is easy for no oneTo no what is easier for us is harder for othersSacrifice one skill for anotherexhaustion for great achievement. If we don?t try we?ve failed If we don?t start todayThen it will be harder tomorrowIf we try to fly we land on our headThere is always one more ledgeAnd the mountain never endsThe views will get betterIf we are persistent in the endThe darkness comes early when we rest to longOur muscles atrophy and our mind goes numbAre brains wither away in, stress, pills or depressionMarking the return to the child from which we had comeTo climb until the end, To fight for every dayTo no its for the climbAnd to be healthy for our time.
  18. Speaking of Google adds has anyone looked at the beta version of the Google groups. The adds take up way to much space. This could be pad for displaying programming that have a lot of nested structures. The word wrapping this could cause could make it difficult to read.
  19. Anyone ever look at visual logic before. It looks pretty neat and should make it easy to understand a paragraph that contains complicated logic. It can also be used to easily identify contradictions. Apparently as an alternative to logical programming you can program visually using visual logic. It looks pretty neat. Check it out: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Me myself. This I just found out about it. I will probably do some more reading on it sometime later. Anywone know any good links?
  20. I think there is a serious issue of how to power it. Clearly if you have a big gas engine you could provide enough power for the thing but how big would the board have to be. Perhaps there are higher energy fuels per volume then but there may be public safety issues. For instance you obviously arent going to be able to use a mini nuclear reactor if they could be built that small. Perhaps high powered capacitors are the best hope. Or a plasma torrid? Maybe?
  21. I?ve played the piano for many years and am fairly good at it. Now that I am away at university the only interment I have to fool around with is my electric guitar. I leave the am off all the time because I like it quite. The guitar is much easier to improvise on and play buy ear but I really can?t play many songs on it. All I can really play is stair way to heaven. Well, pieces of other stuff like Minuet in G by Bach or something
  22. Has anyone every looked at logical programming yet? I am interested in all sorts of programming paradigms. Logical programming looks kind of neat. Apparently it can be used to generate you own language parson. I found a fairly gentle introduction to prolog at: It gives some simple code to some neat problems http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ You can also download a free compiler at: http://www.freeprogrammingresources.com/lispcompiler.html
  23. What you do it take down grass hills, and you will really fly because there will be very little air resistance. I bet most people here couldn?t stay on it. If I had money to waste why not buy one but for now I will stick to my roller blades. As far as dangerous hopefully any moving parts are covered.
