Well that sucks for me, mine came along with SP2...Linux rules man, but the thing's bloated. Don't get mewrong, but the only system I can probably think of withspeed in its name is Gentoo. That's it. And that's becauseit's a processor optimized system on the GCC. Plus, thereare 10000 device drivers and the kernel doubles in sizeevery few years. Ok, pretty soon the kernel might be2.7 GB Linux Kernel 7.0! ~Now how do I get that on my486? It's losing speed and what it originally came out for.Pretty soon the old systems will be running obselete linux.The thing needs to be tuned down a little. Another thing.The syntax. It kills me. Ever been to the console with makeand came back alive and sane? The gcc & make don't makea nice combination together, they spit off errors like a fountain.Not to mention gas doesn't help.Open source rules and forever shall! It's probably going to be faster than that because the whole system is tuned for it. About an xtra $750.-costs about $3500 if you get all the good stuff.So if you have the money, there's no better in thedesktop arena that's standard.

I don't think you're right Darth Vivi. Microsoft sells Visual C++and makes its OS mostly in C. But C is good in system programming,and C++ for your everyday programming since it gives everyonea bit more peace of mind. Personally I've seen C programs runfaster and smaller than C++ programs, but that's because C's moresystem oriented. Personally, I prefer C++. I'd use assembly ratherthan C nowadays.

Why not get a copy of a book from the author of C++ himself?Stroustrup. See The C++ Programming Language: Special Edition.It's 4 years old, but good reading. It serves as a tutorial andreference I think that should be good for your friend. You canget it at Amazon or Barnes and Nobles.

Unix is probably more stable but Linux has a lot more device drivers and the like. The command line is almost identical. But personally I like Linux better, Gentoo all the way.

Well, I admit that WINE can't emulate windows all that well, but there are still a bunch of games for linux. Just type it in at google, 'linux games'. I know you usually need to get 101 packages first, but I have a sourceforge project dedicated to that, it's called CDE, Code Dependency Eliminator. I seriously think you guys provided plenty of extra information without the other basics. Yes, gcc is the standard compiler for C/C++ on linux. G++ is the actual C++ compiler. Use make for your large projects and the simple text editors for creating your .cpp's -basically nano with Gentoo Linux This site should help you for gcc syntax: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ -that's information to do it old skool ~by the console. That's where I learned it to be honest ...and if you get sick of gcc [how?] you can always declare mutiny and use the Intel Non-Commercial Linux Compiler -and you can take your rebel self to http://www.thefreecountry.com/ to get a copy of that. Hope that helps.
