  1. I think the WC3 "standard" is BS anyway. I always hear that Firefox is "compliant" and so is Opera and other browsers. What does this mean? It is SUPPOSED to mean that a webpage with coded "properly" will look the same in Opera and Firefox. Well, it DOESN'T. There are always differences depending on the browser you use. Especially if you are using fancy stuff. The browser you should "test" your site in is basically the browser that your visitors use. If 99% of them are on IE, why would you design using Opera?? It doesn't make sense. When I design pages, I make sure it is perfect in IE (90% of visitors) and I make sure it is 99% fine in Firefox (8% of visitors). For the other 2% of my visitors, I could care less what they see (example: MAC users). If you tried to design your site for 100% of the browsers out there, you would never finish your pages.
  2. you don't have to get to light speed in order to be affected by einstiens relativity theory. even if you are in a moving car time will pass slower for you compared to someone sitting still. The only thing is, even if you spent your whole life in a car moving at 60miles/hour you might gain 1 second on someone who was not in a car. You need to get to significant speeds before you will see any effect.for astronauts today, it is said that they have gained a couple seconds because as they orbit the earth they are travelling at around 40,000 km/h. But, don't quote me on this speed... it is the speed required to remain in orbit around the earth. At this speed, the effects are more noticeable. The article you read that says humans cannot travel at the speed of light is mostly true. As you approach the speed of light, your mass increases. When you hit the speed of light, your mass approaches infinity. This is why light particles can travel at the speed of light... light particles have no mass. There have been tests done on electrons where they are accelerated to approach light speed. They did not get to light speed but got very close. Electrons ALMOST have 0 mass so they were able to get close to light speed.Einstein's theory says this phenomenon happens because the speed of light is CONSTANT. To illustrate, you stand on the ground and throw a ball at 20mph. That ball is moving 20mph. You stand on a moving truck at 20mph and throw that same ball 20mph. The ball is now moving at 40mph.For light there is no "addition effect" (relativity). No matter how fast you are moving, light will always move at the same speed. For example, you are in your car and your headlights project forward. You can see what is in front of you because the light moves from your headlights faster than your car. The light is able to illuminate what is in front of you. If your car is moving at light speed, your headlights would not be seen at all. This is einstiens theory of relativity.
  3. I would just like to point out that we currently HAVE the technology to travel FORWARD in time. It is based on Einstein's theories.Einstien said that the faster one travels the slower time passes for that person. In essence, if you traveled fast enough (speed of light), time would stand still for you RELATIVE to someone who wasn't moving. It has already been proven that this theory is CORRECT. They have made electrons travel forward in time and they have shown that time passed slower for astronauts because they have been travelling so fast for extended periods of time.Basically, if we made a machine (say a ferris wheel), that could move the person in the machine at fast enough speeds, he could essentially travel forward in time. To the person in the machine, years could pass instantaneously...
  4. the most important thing in preventing carpal tunnel is having the correct position when using the computer/mouse/etc. For example, the angle and height of the monitor... the angle and height of the keyboard... the position of your arm relative to the mouse... seat position relative to the mouse... It all makes a difference. At work we got all these ergonomic chairs that position the arm so that the mouse becomes an extension of the hand... it works great.
  5. my page rank in google went from 0 up to 3 then back down to 0 and now it is at 4. I really don't get how page rank helps in the search results though. It really doesn't make much difference what the page rank is. My site didn't move in the search results no matter what the page rank was.
  6. Time travel is confusing and can create a paradox. For example, if you went back in time and killed your own mother before you were born (don't ask me why you would do that), then you would never have been born. If you were never born, then you could not go back in time to kill her. SO, if you could not go back to kill her... you would be born... and the cycle continues. Also, if time travel were at all possible... then it should already exist. If it were possible, then that means people from the future are already here. If they are already here, does that mean we are living in the past? Everything we are doing is history? Time travel is very confusing and makes for interesting movies. But, if it were possible in real life... then life would really have no meaning.
  7. I have successfully installed Linspire, mandrake, suse, slack, and gentoo on VirtualPC. It ran fine and I had no problems installing. Just my two cents. If you are gonna install on your "real" PC, I wouldn't want to run linux as my primary operating system though. Linux just doesn't have the programs I need. It's ok to play around but I find it really isn't useful for me. From your first post, I think you are only trying linux so you can play around with it. This is why I recommend not installing it as your primary operating system, it is ideal if you can get it into Virtual PC. If not, you should do a dual boot setup.
  8. I never had any problems but the most expensive thing I bought using this account was like $50. Basically don't link your bank account to Paypal because then they can go directly to your bank account and get money. Just put a low credit limit credit card on the account. Paypal cannot directly get money off the credit card (but they can get it from a bank account).I currently have a $500 limit credit card on that account. If something happens, it is only $500 and in most cases, the credit card company will not make me pay for fraud. In my opinion, you should not be buying stuff that cost more than $500 off ebay anyway. It is a huge risk.
  9. The main concern for me is that they offer TRANSPARENT customer interaction. I want to know exactly who is clicking, when they click, and also the cost. Google is basically hiding all this information so no one can compare notes. They use their "smart pricing" to discount earnings of publishers but we really don't know when it is applied and why... I would give Yahoo a try for sure. I have signed up for their notification and so far they are offering the Yahoo ads but you won't get paid for it.
  10. What's popular in industry depends on what you plan on doing. For websites/servers in a corporate setting, the .net stuff is very popular. And part of the .net stuff you have c# or even visual basic. There are many other languages for different types of work as well. Let's say you are going to be doing programming for financial modelling... Visual Basic is the industry standard. Let's say you want to work with databases and reporting. In that case, SQL is pretty much the standard there.I would recommend NOT specializing. The best is to know ALL the popular ones. For example, IF you can learn .net and CGI/Perl/PHP, then it won't matter what system your employer/customer uses. You will be able to work with like 99% of all web servers/web sites. As a programmer, select an industry you want to be in and become an expert in at least the top 2 languages for that industry. That way you will be in high demand and can get good paying jobs.
  11. You can try Lindows (or Linspire). It is a windows like interface. But, personally I think that distro is very slow and has too much junk in it. The good thing about it is that you just pop in the CD and pretty much hit install and everything is done for you.
  12. Someone copying a post is annoying but it is so easy to detect that I find it is not so bad. I think it is worse when people cut and paste an article from somewhere and it goes on for pages and pages. I hate it when they do that when they could easily have just put up a link. Some people are just lazy. Also, I do tend to agree that the hosting credits decrease at a quick rate. You tend to have to post about 4-5 times a week in order to keep them at a static level. Obviously it depends on the size of the post. If I post 2-3 messages a week, I generally lose about 3 days of hosting credits.
  13. I would definately confront the person. This way, you everything will be out in the open. If you can't work things out, the next step is to cut this person out. If you have mutual friends this may be difficult. In life, you will lose some friends. It WILL happen for many different reasons. This is one of them. Having a fall out with one of your friends is not an uncommon thing. Again, try to work it out. If you try and it doesn't work, you will need to move on.
  14. anyone who quits school when they are TEN years old has some serious problems. I doubt anyone on this forum will be able to help someone in this case. Probably the best advice is to talk to some responsible adults who can provide some guidance.

    College Finals

Speaking of ditching classes, I used to go to the strip joint instead of class. We sometimes skipped the afternoon classes... In the afternoons, the strip joints are empty and you get all the chicks to yourself. Nobody really shows up until after 5pm. It was cool cause we got attention even though the chicks KNEW we were poor students... they were bored too...

university isn't that tough at all. You can coast through it very easily, but you might not learn as much. I don't know why the original poster is complaining about exams... probably just can't handle stress too well. Exams are pretty easy if you did the work up front. You asked the point of all the other assignments? It's to help you learn and make you practice and remember the concepts. The exam test to see if you remember them or not.
  17. i got a job but i still use adsense. Adsense has made me a pretty nice bonus every month. I wouldn't want to give up that money even though I have a job. Why would anyone turn away money?
  18. the USA isn't exactly known for being knowledgeable about the world outside their own borders. The best way to determine this is to look at some rankings (produced by american sources) of world universities and see if your desired university has even made the list. chances are, most of those universities on the list will be from the USA. When I looked at MBA universities, The top 50 schools did not include any italian universities. Considering this, I would suspect that for undergraduate programs, italian universities will not be well known. I did a quick google search... check this link http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ - only 1 itialian university in the top 100 (ranked 93rd) - but this ranking is from a chinese university and not american this link http://www.thetimes.co.uk/ - UK listing of top 50 universities in the world... none are italian
  19. yay! TWO posts that are exactly the same and both of which are copied straight from google.com! Amazing... The thread creator has a link to the same content...back to the web accelerator, I really believe this is not google having their finger in too many cakes. In terms of their business, they are the masters at collecting and organizing data. This is another way to collect usage stats from people. They will know what pages are popular (accessed many times) and then they will probably incorporate this into their ranking system. PLUS, they will have surfing habits which they can use for marketing or they can sell the information. They will track similarities in web surfing habits across thousands of people to develop profiles. For example, 90% of those who go to car websites also go to computer websites. That would be valuable information for comptuer sellers. They know they can reach their customers by advertising on car related things.
  20. I don't hate it so much when someone askes me my religion. What I really hate is when people try to CONVERT me to their religion. I don't really want to be a christian, and I don't care about being a Jehovah's Witness. Leave me alone. If I wanted to join your religion, I would go to your church, or whatever place of worship you attend. Don't come to my house, don't bother me on the bus, don't ask me at the mall... leave me alone. ESPECIALLY when I say I am not interested... you should shut up.
  21. Religion is the root of many evils. How many wars in history have been started over religious beliefs? Look at the "war" between muslims and christians going on right now. Many christians, although they would not admit this publicly, probably would be happy if muslims were all converted.Religion has a place in society but in this day and age, it should not run our lives. The people that are religious fanatics are the ones who cause problems. And the problem is that many people ARE religious fanatics. Religion, in this day and age, should be viewed as a guide for life and not a moral guage for what is right and wrong.
  22. although there is no fee, you must submit social security number if you are in the US. Besides this, there really isn't a problem with the signup process for google adsense (there is no need for credit card either). Also, it can't be said enough, DO NOT CLICK YOUR OWN ADS. And don't tell your friends to either.
  23. If you read what I wrote a bit more carefully, I didn't say "a group of black guys waving guns around in plain sight". I said, if you saw a group of mean looking black guys in a bad neighborhood, you ASSUME they are carrying guns. Even if that group of mean looking black guys are in a GOOD neighborhood most people will probably assume they are packing. I don't think you understand how stereotypes and generalizations work. There are always EXCEPTIONS but STATISTICALLY you will see a higher proportion of non-blacks in those professions you listed. The REASONS are not being argued. Whether the "generalization" is correct or not is the main point. But, let me give you an example. I did my engineering degree and there were TWO black people in my class out of 130. I also did my masters in business. There were THREE black people in my class of 100. In terms of statistics, those black people are outside 3 standard deviations which means they are anomolies. Finally, that last part "more of them [would be docters, etc.] if the racist professors and teachers didn't fudge the grades" is a very racists or stereotypical comment. How can you say you hate generalizations/stereotypes/racism and say something like that?
  24. i have resigned from 3 jobs. I don't know where you are from but based on your english, I am guessing it is not North America. In North America, the employers MUST accept your resignation without explanation. What you have to provide is an acceptable amount of time (notice) so that the employer can minimize the impact of your absense.I resigned from one job specifically to go back to school and I just told them I was going back to school. They can't say anything about that. They tried to offer me money but from my perspective, once you tell them you are leaving you can't change your mind. Now, if you have signed a specific contract stating you will complete X amount of months, then breaking the contract CAN be a problem. This is only if you are a CONTRACTOR. If you are on salary with no "end date" in your contract, you can quit any time. If you are a contractor, you must negotiate with the employer to get an earlier release date. It may not be possible if they need to get the work done. If you get an agreement... GET IT IN WRITING.
  25. i don't see what the big deal is. There are "hobbits" all over the place right now. They are called midgets... they are adults who are really short. What makes them unique? Why would they be considered another type of human? I don't really understand why they aren't just midgets.
