  1. please someone explain to me how can one send electric power through the ground and receive it on the other end in the same form...i mean without wires?...doesn't it dissipate like the residual electricity from grounding plugs and stuff...
  2. wow, i wish we had free GPRS here in Romania...there are better payed alternatives but free is free, even if it is slow. At least for mail and reading on the internet it could be best.
  3. wow, i can't stop thinking this was a joke,...never heard of blogger;it's like everywhere on the internet written about it. But wordpress is beter and it gets less and less easier. I dunno if google anyway favours it's bloging system to get better publicity, so if i wanted a successfull blog i'd try to answer that question because i'd like to have the best rank in google, and if it is worse ranked than blogger than i'd choose blogger as a bloging platform, perhaps their payed version. I now have a blogger account but soon i hope to port it to a wordpress one as it offers me a better customizing experience.
  4. They're forced now to comply to some extent that anyway make the AJAX platform viable even on IE7 so i guess nothing is gonna stop Google from what they want to do, perhaps only the fact that not everybody has broadband internet access to get quick responses and real-time complicated editing (??). But i'll be glad to see what comes next
  5. A little advice before comments...try a little harder to make posts than copying the first sentence from the article and throwing the link, it would make the post more appealing on discussions, perhaps your opinion...As about myself, i'm right now working on my university degree paperwork on renewable sources of energy focusing on geothermal heat pump systems and got freaked of how many things i've learned about global warming and those warming and green gas pollution statistics killed my flight...it's awfull what is happening with our planet and changes in politics are so slow because money count first, no one cares their children will see (or live) Katrina-like catastrophies increasingly often.
  6. hello alfredglenstein, seems that windows will only remain for games for you as almost everything seems to go online. Yes, there is a office suite very similar to MS Office called OpenOffice and the Sun guys bet much on it and together with the open-source community will get a better office suite than MS's in a few months i hope. There are still other suites like KOffice and if you're interested mostly in the writting and don't need a suite Abiword can do great. As about rss and html editors there are a few very good like Bluefish and QuantaPlus and NVU wants to be Macromedia Dreamweaver replacement- though it's so far away- and u can run dreamwaver through a program called Wine that emulates windows in linux. If u want to try some games there's Cedega, a software made by Codeweavers i guess that can get u playing some very popular windows games in linux, and i can remmember even a debate on how much faster Unreal Tournament (not very sure if this one was) played in linux comepared with windows. It's a payed product but the fee is pretty low.For me, the only real lack would be a really good CAD software. ...ah, and there are not versions of linux like in windows, there are many linux flavours (each one a complete OS with the same kernel), and each flavour has its versions. Like the other posters have said earlier Ubuntu is a good choice, also SimplyMepis, Suse, PCLinuxOS as really easy linux flavours. And the best is that u can even try them before installing, running them off a liveCD, and u can have a complete linux OS without installing it on HDD, so u can even do your browsing being inside linux with the cd in the device.
  7. quite right but anyway i was meaning IE5, IE6, and soon IE7. And i guess there are hacks for many things that IE doesn't implement the w3c way
  8. THE WORLD WOULD BE SO MUCH BETTER WITHOUT MICROSOFT OR PERHAPS WITHOUT THEIR GREED TO OWE EVERYTHING. It's not true that in linux you lack drivers, it's so not true that bugs are fixed in windows sooner than in linux(think about it, find a bug and fill a bug report and see when will microsoft patch it, may be months, many months because they have lots of beaurocracy and it's a long way for your mail or whatever application to get to the person that makes the decision...in linux i can remmember that one found a critical bug in ubuntu...and it got fixed in less than an hour!!!), it's not true that linux is CLI(when did u look the last time in linux world to see what tremendous work has been done lately- in the latest 4 years), just try to stick a usb flash in the computer and see that it recognises it, u can even boot your linux off a flash pen, and u don't have to pick up a little distro that has little forums, pick ubuntu and see that your question gets answered in hours at most. I'm not a linux religious, i have a dualboot with windows XP, the only really annoiances are the lack of some really important apps in linux -but not their fault adobe or autodesk or macromedia doesn't port their closed-source apps to linux, linuxists would do the work for them if they had the source-code and the fact that it's very difficult to create open-source drivers for devices that manufacturers don't offer specifications, also not linuxists' fault. Another annoyance especially there where DRM mania flourish is tha imposibility to play some multimedia formats. And there are of course bugs like windows has, but these are worked on and while windows releases a new version of their system in 5 years linux releases a couple per year. Look at Novell's efforts lately with XGL.PLEASE, don't speak if u don't know what u're talking about or if the data u rely on is outdated...i've hured just a few days back that some guy installed red hat on his computer and it was like hell, so linux sucks, he didn't even realized that that was like 4-5 years old version.I am not be a linux freack, i just for 6 months struggle to learn how much i can and so far i can do almost all i need on my linux, haven't open Xp for some months and i watch multimedia, do graphics, develop websites, play games with cedega or wine. Not Windows-friendly yat for sure but lately the advantages ocercome the disadvantagess and i can let my windows partition die slowly, especially i won't install vista ever.
  9. I used to use foxit reader but while it's pretty good at showing text it doesn't do a that good work with tons of graphics. I used to do a lot of corel draw stuff saved in pdf formats for portability and there were errors, sometimes big ones in foxit. Otherwise for one that is space constrained it could be good. But anyway, my files are bigger than 2 MB, what the heck, i have tenths of files and it's funny to look at the size of the software while many files are bigger than that. And, by the way, i've got almost half a terrabyte hdd storage , 35 MB?...fetch a magnifying glass overhere
  10. Yeah, that would me my advice, use linux, there are now many linux oses that do 99%of what windows does and if u learn a few things u should d0 perhaps 100%. Try ubuntu or suse and do some reading on the internet, i'm sure 2 weeks of reading will cost less than a new windows xp I'm also a convert from windows(aren't we all?) and didn't boot into xp for months, only that the freedom of choice and money brings some learning to do...wich eventually makes u smarter and u'll be glad that u really can drive your computer and don't get enslaved by the os (pretty harsh word but after u read the microsoft licence u realize that u pay money to not be able to use the software as u should- and u've just seen the results).Hope now for a better world without microsoft or with a frendlier microsoft. Anyway guess that won't happen.Cheers.
  11. You in vane have the best ranking if people just after one visit get dissapointed in your content and never come back...you should have decent and well mantained content for people to vosit regularly your site so that u get popular and linked from others for the good content u provide. I guess many trics are there which is a good thing but none beats good content, regularly updated and that get people interested in it, and u should mantain a good policy of relations with other sites. the tricks u speak of make the difference between top 30 let's say but it doesn't matter if you rank in google at position 12499 due to your lack of content. And u should perfect your techniques of writting, u should learn how to write, it's not easy, one should put a lot of work in his site and even if this is hard it keeps the internet viable as a good source of information and get people coming again and again. It lets the best content win, the rest shouldn't even be there. Competition is the best thing. And one should really be able to compete to survive and perhaps be the winner.
  12. Indeed a very fascinating subject, i can't not say my opinion. So i think the radio waves and microwaves are already a threat to our bodies (carciogenic). But i guess energy can be transmitted through air (i don't know if it's economically feasable as the air isn't as good transmitter as copper say or aluminium ) but i've read once that space solar plants could transmitt back the energy to earth by microwaves( perhaps some very high density beams) to a receiver at some height that it wouldn't affect organic life. Then again it would loose very much energy through air ionisation and heat dissipation. I still think the most advanced way of transmitting energy will be nano-particles-based, i dunno how but air transmitting isn't that good as i see things. We're already surrounded by too many radiowaves and magnetic fields and static electricity and so on. This can't be good for the cells inside us.
  13. It's a pity flash sites can't be efficiently indexed because they really can get multimedia sites in front of people, not like simple xhtml sites, even enriched with php and other stuff. Anf i don't think flash sites can't be enough text-rich to offer the information a html site would offer. And i'm so sick of the differences browsers disply css and that u need another hacks for every new browser out there...and here it comes the new InternetExplorer!!! bleah
  14. Guess google tries too hard to be everything for everybody but my guess is that in this matter if the office suite will be free we'll have another gogle product winner...they're hard to get beaten...we'll see.
  15. Don't agree that this deed makes him a good hacker but the american government really overreact and try to show everybody they're tough (scared ) ) And they shouldn't do that but i guess it's just the cover story perhaps they'll gat him in the NASA labs to do some job for some pseudo-liberty, they can't just let such a brain escape. Perhaps seen too many movies , hehe, but it's my opinion on the subject. Cheers!
  16. how are the search engines handling the flash sites? It's been any evolution? Can Google read through them ? -cause the .swf format is available for some years now-...
  17. regular users shouldn't really care if they speed up their browsing cause it's pretty safe but website and server admins have real trouble with these NOSed browsers as they open and often preload tons of stuff that won't even be viewed and eat bandwitch so there've appeared solutions to ban or not allow you to browse certain sites. I don't know very well the admin part but i guess i've read there's even an apache module to deal with this problem. I used to use fasterfox untill i've read about this thing. Now i turned off the turbocharged option and i use it without risking to get banned temporarly or permanently and of course i don't want my sites to get their bandwitch sucked for no advantage(most of preloaded pages won't even be seen as they are preloaded just in case), so i'm the ones to prevent this...Anyway...how would u feel if your sites' bandwitch would be consumed by only a few folks that have prefetch enabled and other tricky options? You'd be forced to buy extra bandwitch for no real gain.Just my 2 cents...think of it. Cheers!
  18. I can't wait for such a device with linux inside, so that one could afford one...cause if u pay for <crappy> windows, it would double it's price (and also breakdowns )-very interested in the VIA solutions, would certainly like one.
  19. tottaly unpractical if u ask me, it's nice to see in a shop window but not at home with other purpose than some curio or office glamour. Of course it would still be cool if it had some attached pad for setting it up so that u don't need to touch it.and u can hit the pad in the morning to get it silenced . I could design some useful features.
  20. Is it legal to name a doamain to include in it some trademarked name?Let's say 'honda-drive-test.com' or 'why-Xisto-rocks.com' ?
  21. Yeah, it's the best thing for Windows and i wouldn't use anything else fro internet browsing, but i use linux for more than 6 months already and the issue that made me swich to firefox is the difficulty Opera works with plug-ins especially the flash plug-in because i could never get it to play sound in flash while let's say music was playing. It was just a pain and i hope Opera 9 solves this issues and make loads of linux users swich back to it. It's speed is amazing.Mouse gestures work way better than in firefox with mouse -gestures extensions, looks very pretty also, saves sessions, is more secure and i also love the bar that appears when u hoover the adress-bar and which is very useful to me. So, waiting for opera 9 for Linux.
  22. Very useful and good to be reminded from time to time. Even a good designer tends to do things the same way if they are successfull and neglects the fact that he might loose some skills by not being different. Hope i was coherent with this post...
  23. aha, i get it now...didn't know that but seemed easier to me this way.So, if i want to have 2 virtual hosts in a certain folder where i keep my websites i could write smth similar, like:<VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /home/thor/www1/ ServerName thor1</VirtualHost><VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /home/thor/www1/ ServerName thor2</VirtualHost> ?Would this work?[i'm again at work and here no linux around]I remmember i did smth similar though but it gave some errors concerning the '*' character conflicting with smth...i can't remmember right now but i'll try at home and let u know so that maybe u can help. Thanks for the answer.
  24. Ok, forum must be slow but not getting any answer i did it myself. Don't really have enough time for these things but now i set my mind into getting this done. The solution vas very simple indeed, and i needed only to write in my httpd.conf the following line: ServerName thor:80 , thor beeing the name i write in browser and 80 the port apache listens to.
  25. Sorry if i was not so clear about my question, i was asking about setting a virtual domain would help get rid of that message or it is caused by other missconfigurations?
