  1. I seem to have succeded by making those 2 simlinks for userdir.conf and userdir.load from mods-available to mods-enabled. The commented line of #UserDir public_html from apache2.conf seems to be of no use unless one wants apache to look in other default folder but public_html. I've found this interesting because even with the line commented with # apache2 would look into my /home/thor/public_html/ for my index.html -even if i write in the browser localhost/~thor/ . If i uncomment it and change public_html to let's say public_htm apache considers the line. Ok, now one question remains which i'd so much like answered, namely: when i start apache i get this line before it starts: apache2: Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName What should i do to get rid of it, or it's normal when i set up the server locally? Perhaps i should set somewhere a virtual domain name for apache to use when starts...but then, what if i have a few virtual domains i work at?
  2. I've made myself a little time to dirch the net for an answer and learned this was a bug in the apache2 as it fails to load userdir.conf and userdir.load modules from mods-available to modules-enabled, but i didn't tried yet to make some simlinks from mods-enabled to the module in mods-available because i don't know if it's the way to go as i've read on apache bugzilla it's not necessary or similar. I've read things about apache on the forum, in the xamp thread too but didn't seem to find anything helpful there. I really wouldn't like to rely on xamp because i am a little geek and i want to get my hands dirty a little bit with .confs and thus i can learn of how apache works. Thanks and perhaps now, that i've insulated the problem, someone could give a help.
  3. Hi guys, i'm not much of a programmer and try for 3-4 days to install on my KANOTIX Apache, MySql and PHP. At each of them i have issues and can't go further without some help. So please help me here. I'll take them in row. First i installed apache with apt-get and got installed the following apache2, apache2-common, apache2-mpm-prefork, apache2-utils, libapache2-mod-php5 and some other apache libraries(libxalan2-java, libxerces2-java, libssl0.9.8, libservlet2.3-java, libjaxp1.2-java)-guess these not being important, perhaps were here in Synaptic before installing apache2. I followed the tutorial here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and it seems that everything should work, but i have a few problems or misunderstandings: first when i tested apache if properly installed i wrote as root etc/init.d/apache2 start and got the following answer: Starting apache 2.0 web server...apache2: Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName. I suppose because i don't have a domain name but i don't need one as i only want to test CMS locally. Then when i write in a browser http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ i get the right page and if i write LOCALHOST/apache2-default/ i get the same. But i learned that the apache server looks also in users' dirs like /home/user/public_html/ if created. So i created one as root and pointed the browser to my user's index.html at LOCALHOST/home/thor/public_html/ but i get the error: The requested URL /home/thor/public_html/ was not found on this server. Should i load a module from mods-available to mods-enabled? cause i've seen in mod-available 2 modules called userdir.conf and userdir.load. And if so how can i do that? So how can i be 100% sure my apache2 install is right? Because i need to know everything is ok before installing php so potential errors there won't be suspected as apache's erors. The same with mysql.
  4. i have a blog on blogger and want to import it to a website here on Xisto, be it wordpress or any cms (joomla i'd like) what should i do, i'm not much of a web designer but i don't like blogger and i quite neglected updating it so i'd like it in a more customizable format.
  5. By the way, how can i manage to save that on my hdd? i didn't find any valuable info in the source-code...though there is player.swf but hadn't been able to track it down.
  6. I am trully amazed by this technology...trully amased...trully...I don't even know what to say, it's crazy. It would get multimedia and everything so far that actual mouses will be seen as antiquities. This would change everything a computer looks like...no mouse, no keyboard...no tablet(lol)...and the feeling is undescribable.Let me watch the movie once again
  7. one question came to my mind: why to restrict access to military bases as long as many satelites orbitting earth can take the same photos and thus any government can picture Area 51? But then, perhaps governments themselves are keeping secret their pictures for not getting in terrorists hands or so. But then, in many countries terrorists have close relationships with leaders and governments so if anyone want to harm USA they can do it without google earth (lol). So why hide or shade or blackened these? I'm very sure Area 51 lies underground most of it so there's nothing to look for as long as the satelite doesn't have some sort of ground prospecting tool (i've hured there are satelites searching for stuff undergrund, too laty to dig that now).
  8. I just hope it doesn't do to servers what the fasterfox extension for firefox does cause if it's so then it probably prefetches way too much pages for you to get them from cache if you ever hit the link. It can't have any algoritm for guessing what link you'll hit next so it prefetches perhaps all the pages linked from a visited page ripping practically the server's bandwitch. This won't be too bad if you're selfish (let them have more bandwitch available!) but there are apache modules under work to ban ips that request more than "x" pages in a given time so you can be banned and worse they could ban you permanently (i don't really know if this can be done if you have a dinamic ip adress, that's what i've read.) So i hope google makes this in a smarter way, healthier for the whole internet.
  9. yeah, i made myself a little research and found some nice extensions. Thanks for the link. I managed to make it resemble opera even with a theme and am pretty happy with it. Fasterfox extension got it a little faster approaching opera in terms of speed and one extension for saving and managing sessions and another one for handling tabs and that's it for nnow.i'll try not to get too many extensions as i guess they're slowing down the thing...Ups!, i've just read about Fasterfox ripping servers because it uses prefetch and thus every link in a page gets prefetched in cache, so i hope my fasterfox extension is the latest which has this option disabled by default. It's not fair for websites that get a lot of bandwitch used for nothing and thus in danger of shutting down.
  10. Ok, hey guys first, i use linux and i have opera, konqueror and firefox installed and i didn't managed to get sound in flash websites in the first 2. So i could swich to firefox but i badly need autosave sessions on close, and mouse gestures -how can one live without them. Any other good extension for firefox that u know and it's of great use? And how does extensions install?
  11. As far as i know it's a great tecjnology used more and more and seems to get as much popularity as Apache server has because it's made up of free technologies. I read somewhere Macromedia has smth similar but proprietary of course. As long as it will do its job it's gonna gain popularity. OpenLaszlo, the open-source platform for making flash rich web applications (like web 2.0) it's using it now together with their technology. I guess they both rock and can't wait to finally finish university this year and to have more time sudying.
  12. Thanks for the information keysmaker. Pretty interesting, as i don't even consider plasmas i didn't know of the burn-in effect but i knew about kuilcky loosing contrast due to the gas inside and thus colours get diluated so no more real black and i've hured they have overheating problems and suck a lot of energy. So they're not for me.But aren't TFTs more technologically advanced than LCDs? Why wouldn't i prefer a TFT over both ?
  13. So if i had a website and thus a domain i could sign up and have a lot more than those 2,6 or so gb? How many of the gmail users don't have a website?
  14. Funny just yesterday i've read here about this google feature and now i'm drilling web for some GeoExchange technical and general documentation for my degree paperwork. Perhaps i should try google books afterall, but for now i'm just starting so general info is provided by www.
  15. These are really well thought businesses and it's not over night setting it up and making it work. It takes a lot of knowledge and business skills to get such a good business. I can't stop appreciating them. But it's not going to happen to any blog out there. This must be a whole bunch of blogs made by people who know what they're talking about and they should talk about thaings that are searched and get people interested in.
  16. It's very useful if u can't find some info right away and don't find a free book on the subject. If i was very interested in smth i would find a way to get it offline (lol, there are the temp dirs where the web pages are stored and so on), i would even printscreen it and have it OCRed. My sister does this for some time and she isn't interested at all in computers. I've seen those links to google books through searches but was never interested enough to click. Good thing to know for everyone that can't afford a book. Thanks man.
  17. this is a really peculiar question, i would read anyone's blog if i was interested in the subject and have some confidence in the writter. As long as it shows up in the search-engine's first pages it's ok as it means at least he's good at SEO(lol) but usually it means that page is linked on many other sites and it's read by many.
  18. hahahaha, what a good laugh; but whether is really like that or not it makes great publicity to macs indeed. Ever heard of 'even bad publicity is also publicity' and when he sais at the end he edited that on his Mac he makes a lot of it. I don't have a mac but i guess it's partially true as i've hured things like that on forums. Of course the PCs are not better look at Windows( ). That's why the OSes code should be visible for all couse more eyes on it the better. It's a pitty Linux isn't well supported by hardware manufacturers...it would rock.
  19. Why don't u just some debian based distros since they're famous for not getting u onto dependancy hell?try SymplyMepis or Kanotix and why not Ubuntu/Kubuntu? I myself like the first 2 cause they are closer to debian but ubuntu forums simply rocks.Ah, of course SimplyMepis and Kanotix are also LiveCDs so you can boot right from the cd and give it a try.Hope this helped anything:)
  20. yeah i googled all day today and tried different things but no way of getting it done. I even downloaded some drivers from asus site but when trying to install them my windows sais that the destination folder does not contain any information about my system and thus no success. And it is also reccomended that one installs from a floppy disk the drivers but nowhere an explicit disk content is available as far as i learned. So i am a bit dissapointed but anyway my linux recognises it so anyway that's going to be my working OS but i wanted to have some shared partitions. Perhaps someone owning a sata could share some knowledge.
  21. ok, got it, thank you, but for an institution isn't it little 2gb? Perhaps another dumb question:P
  22. Hy folks, i've got a 250GB SATA Seagate Baracuda and pluged it in my box. It appears after boot and the raid prompt but when getting into windows XP it doesn't find new hardware so i don't know how to install it. I don't have any floppy with the drivers, i'm copying them right now from the internet but how to install a driver for a non-existent device?I appreciate any help, oh my box is an Cheers!
  23. i don't exactly understand, this means that if someone is mailing to board@university.com the mails are being forwarded to a gmail account corresponding to that group, right? I didn't read the links as i don't really have the time right now but maybe you can answer, that applies for every email adress the university has? And, the storage for each account is still 2.*** gb unchanged, is it?
  24. this is exciting news it's a pitty one has to pay to find out the rest of the article. I bet it's very interesting and some photos would be great. I wonder how different are the species from what we know, i guess not much but being not afraid of humans as far as i know has to do with non existing threats for them(as predators and so). I've seen on tv that there's a island in great britain where because of non-existing predators animals and birds do not fear man.
  25. I've read a little bit about this process called "REAMSTERING" and one advantage that comes in my mind would be the possibility to create a livecd that has all applications you currently use might those be office, graphics or even games so that you could run it from any computer and not worry for some app you usually use and can't find on the livecd you have. In linu, everybody has it's preffered applications for doing different tasks and those you can have on your distro by remastering.
