  1. Interesting idea....but I don't really like it all that much.It just looks bad in my opinion....also...digital? Why would you want a digital one? Wouldn't you want it to be a regular one...one that'll keep the picture forever...isn't the the idea of it?
  2. hmmm.... this is a really hard question.I would at first have to say, well i really like firefox...and I use it all the time...But then....i also use AIM all the time (and that is free as well, ad supported, but free)....So I don't think I can choose between those two...so i guess i'll have to make it my favorite pieces of free softwareI also really like open office, the gimp, inkscape, scribus, netbeans, and probably a lot more...but that is all i can think of at the moment.
  3. Yes, but if you look at the information. It looks like they are scalable...meaning that it doesn't have to be a teraflop processor...that is just what their development version was. (with 80 cores) They could instead drop that down to a number that is needed, as the technology allows them to do that depending on the needs. Also, wouldn't it be nice for the speed of the computer to be no obstacle in anything that is done?
  4. I use a UPS and it is a very nice thing to have. Especially since my power will frequently flicker....which causes it to just go out for a second or so, just long enough to cause the computer to restart....which is a pain....especially if you lose work...So I just have one of the ones where it can provide like 15-20 minutes of power (supposably)...However, I don't have anything for the monitor...so when the power goes out, my computer stays running, but my monitor goes off...but that is what the autoshutdown functionality is for, so that it shuts down either when there is x ammount of battery remaining or it has been running on the batter for x ammount of time.Anyhow, I do recommend that you get a UPS as they do a great job at protecting your computer. Just keep in mind that you'll probably have to replace the battery every 5 or so years (you can easily get along longer, it all depends)
  5. Full information can be found here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/research/intel-research.html But basically it is a new processor thing that intel is working on, where there are tons of cores that are all linked together. And I beleive it says that they are smaller than a fingernail for a 1 teraflop. It is interestign when you look at the table for speeds on the website. How they show that running at 3.16Ghz...the processor that they tested used only 62 watts of power and yet it had a performance of over 1 Teraflop. Hopefully they'll be getting these things out soon. Because it sounds so interesting how they have it so that they can easily be repeated over and over again, meaning a virtually limitless way to do this without having to redisgn the processor to meet the needs of different devices such as servers, handheld devices, and computers. Anybody else heard anything about this? Or what does everybody think?
  6. Alright, well the problem appears to be fine....I am guessing it was probably just a little glitch in the server or something for a few minutes. As I tried using both openDNS and my ISP's DNS addresses....Also, I forgot to mention that for a couple minutes I wasn't able to access Xisto.com either, and then that became available and working again. So not sure what was up there, if it was just my computer or connection or what, but it appears to be functioning fine for me now.
  7. Alright, well my website is http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I can access cpanel by going to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and entering my username and password. However, when i try and load my website....it says that it cannot find the server. Anybody else experiencing this?
  8. I have to say that I absolutely love the windows ftp client. As for Internet explorer 7 not supporting it...yes that is true...however..to fix this, you go to my computer...and in the address bar you type in your ftp address....this makes it work like before. As for permissions, I love being able to simply select my files, right click and then change the permissions by checking boxes. To me, the ftp client is so easy to use because of the fact that it is just like using windows...and doing files that way..almost as if you are not communicating with a remote computer. So I am waiting/searching for an ftp client that does this (particularly in linux) but until then, i'll continue to use the ftp capabilities microsoft provides.
  9. Well, hopefully they can fix it without it costing too much. But it really does sound like a battery issue. In which case a new battery might fix it.Otherwise it could easily be other things. Like a dead CMOS battery or something that is causing some funky things to happen. (usually a little coin cell battery, and when dead can cause things to occur, although then you should notice that the system time resets and other things like that)If it is only a year old, usually it is still covered under warranty...and the manufacturer might be able to fix it for you. Although I am not sure about how/if acer has warranties and such, but it would be worth looking into.
  10. I have gotten this on a couple websites before when using firefox. I think what happens is that sometimes firefox gets a little confused about a file type and/or what it is supposed to do with it, so it gets the encoding and such somehow wrong, and so it displays a ton of random stuff....Just think of what happens when you open up some image file in a text editor...you get random stuff. So it was probably just some little error where firefox missed some header of some sort, probably due to a momentary loss of communication between the server and your computer or corrupted data or whatever (an error is bound to happen once in a while especially the further data has to travel, and when it goes around the globe...your chances go up)
  11. Wow, this is a very nice tutorial that you have written, thanks for doing so.I do have one very important question though....what does this do to the quality of the movies that you have? It seems to me that shrinking them/compressing them or whatever would make it so that the quality is reduced.Just wondering if it is something that happens, or that you have noticed or whatever.
  12. So can somebody please elaborate on what this means?I get that this is some sort of standards thing, like the html, css, etc... but I am not sure what we are supposed to do with this, or what is supposed to be taken from this.
  13. Yes, it appears to be working fine for me. One thing is if you are running windows XP, you may need to flush your DNS cache. To do so simply go to start -> run. And then type in 'cmd' (without the quotes). And then hit enter. Then type in the following: ipconfig /flushdns Then clear your cache, and everything and try viewing your website again. If you aren't running windows xp, let me know and i'll get you instructions for that version of windows. Hope this helps, Brian
  14. Well i'm not sure about this host, and would like to know what the catch is....what do I have to do in order to get an account and keep it? What are the restrictions here? (file type restrictions etc.) Well this is off topic and such, but basically how Xisto works is that for every post on the forum you make you get a certain number of points. When you have a hosting account your number of points goes down by about one point per day. So basically you can remain innactive for however many days you want, depending on how many points you have. If you have 30 points, that means that you can be innactive for about a month. Due note however that the points are approximate number of days, so don't automatically assume because you have 100 points that you can remain innactive for 100 days, or else your account could get suspended. And the nice thing about Xisto is that if you do happen to let your points fall below 0, your account simply gets suspended, until you get to -10 points (i think), at which point it is terminated. To unsuspend your account you simply get your points to about 3-4 points and then within an hour or two it'll become unsuspended. So you don't have to worry about remaining active too much around here.
  15. Well I absolutely love the service that Xisto provides, so I was wondering what kinds of banners and images that there are that I could use.I am looking for something that is like 100-190px or so long, and like 30-50px high that says like "hosted by..." or "powered by" or something like that...Also, I am open to putting it up their for either Xisto or Xisto - Web Hosting, whichever you guys would prefer. So thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction.
  16. Ok, well I have a relatively new CD-ROM drive in it (actually a DVD+-R/RW dual layer drive), so I don't think speed with that drive will be an issue with anything. And no it does not have any USB ports. (should I add some?)I have tried a number of different distros now, and it seems as if many have a lot of issues where they will not boot for some reason or another.
  17. I would not recommend this!Windows does a good job at managing your internet connection in order to make sure that it can be used by multiple applications at once, without allowing one to hog everything (kind of like multitasking, only with your bandwidth)....By doing this, you are getting rid of this capability (disabling it), and so then a program can use all of your bandwidth, while another which is just trying to do something simple can't, or is really laggy. For example, say you are downloading some huge file. And talking on AIM.With this left at the default, windows will allow you to do both without noticing a difference in your chatting on AIM (even though you are downloading a huge file)With it changed, your huge file download can easily consume all of your connection, and cause it so that when you are chatting you get large delays in your messages sent and received (just think of how annoying that is)So I would recommend that you leave it at what it is, and don't change it unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing, because with the wrong modifications you might end up making it worse, rather than better.
  18. Well it isn't happening with my account so I am guessing that it is probably some configuration error with your account, or that the problem has already been solved. What I would suggest, first try accessing it again, see if the same thing happens, if it doesn't, then the problem has been solved and you don't have to do anything. If it is still occurring, then send a support e-mail to: support @ Xisto.com Just be sure to include: a description of your problem your forum profile link, which is: http://forums.xisto.com/user/22288-fmay/ Your website Your cpanel username Your cpanel password They have always responded to my support questions in a very timely manner, so best of luck to you.
  19. Ok, well I have an old computer...it is a Pentium 166Mhz computer with 128MB of ram, a 20GB hard drive, and a 2MB video card.I want to put a new operating system on it (i was thinking maybe something in the linux line of things), and was wondering what people would recommend that would work on the computer, and not be unbelievably slow.I really want a GUI interface, but i also don't want to have to wait 10 minutes for everything that you click on.Any recommendations would be great.(not sure if this is exactly the category to post this in)Also any recommendations for cheap hardware upgrades would be great as well...
  20. I have been using notepad++ for quite some time now, and absolutely love it.It is great because it isn't as bulky as an IDE, yet it has many of the features...I used to use just a regular text editor for all of my editing stuff, but notepad++ takes it to a new level.
  21. Actually, I have to disagree with a lot of what is said here....I really never did know that the tab key worked both directions with the shift key (may have learned it at one point and forgotten), and I have been using computers for a long time now.....So thanks for the advice, even if it is supposed to be "common Knowledge" as many others appear to think it is.
  22. I have to say that many of these are excellent considerations to take into account when designing a website...Although about background sound....99% of the time background sound/music is a bad idea, however there are certain cases where it makes sense. For example, if you have a website for a band or some music group, background music might be appropriate...About having 'dynamic' things on the page....make sure that you don't put too much of that....honestly, i would prefer a page that has nothing moving on it most of the time...Websites with tons of scrolling text can be very distracting at times.
  23. I honestly have to say that the best ftp client I have found is the one built into Windows explorer/internet explorer....That one is so easy to use because it integrates seamlessly with windows....unlike other ftp clients which are not as user friendly.
  24. Well I was wondering, this is a nice way to get around it being blocked, but is there a way to block some of these techniques as well?Because when you block the command prompt for security reasons or whatever, it would be nice if it was actually blocked in all ways. So if somebody knows how to block these attempts I think it would be good for all to know. Also, just as a side note, doesn't this belong more in the security & exploits area?
  25. ok, well i tried connecting my TV to my computer via the svideo port on my video card and I ran into trouble. For one, it doesn't appear as though my computer is recognizing that the TV is there....it simply doesn't seem to have any options for it....It lists my card has Nvidia Gforce 2 MX 400 w/ TV Outso I am not sure what I am doing wrong here....Can anybody lead me on the right path?
