  1. Umm...I am not exactly sure what you are referring to here...Are you saying you want to make a game like you would in powerpoint but with html? In that case, the stuff you can do with html is so much more powerful than powerpoint, so it wouldn't be too hard....just have links that do certain things....But as for a tic-tac-toe game....it would probably be best to use php for a back end there....simply because then you don't have to have an html page for every possible possibility...
  2. There are a couple major issues I have had with laptops in the past. One of the largest, and most widespread I have seen has been with power adapters....the socket that they plug into stops working. And so you either have to go in there and re-attach something because it wiggled itself loose on the inside, or pry the contacts out because they lost their springyness that holds the plug securely in place. Now I think that apple has figured out this issue really well, maybe I am wrong, but what I have seen with the magnetic power cords seems like an extremely good idea...as from my first look at them it seems as if they are designed to withstand a lot of abuse...A second issue I have seen is with the hard drives....it seems as if they start to fail a lot quicker than ones in desktop computers....Now I am not sure if that is because of heat, or if it is from people moving the computers when they are on...I guess since I am currently using the first laptop I have ever owned....i may find out. (I hope that I can get a good 4-5 years out of it without having to replace any parts, or anything like that, but with some of the stories I have heard about dell laptops...we'll see about that). But then despite those downfalls, laptops are really nice in that you can have your computer with you wherever...it provides so much portability...once my school loaned me a ibook last year (not the clamshell ones, but the G3's after that)....I was hooked...it was so nice to be able to work wherever I wanted...so as of right now I prefer laptop computers....although for certain situations a desktop computer is better (where portability isn't needed), just because it is a lot easier to upgrade/repair a desktop computer than a laptop (something about having to take out over 200 screws, and have a screen over there, mouse pieces over here, keyboard there, and so on...isn't the most ideal of situations)
  3. Do not disable your antivirus program if you have one....yes they do use a lot of resources, and slow your system down....but a virus or trojan horse can cause you lots more issues....how would you like to spend 20 hours re-installing windows, and trying to recover all the files you can because you got a virus, or even worse trying to fix identity theft issues you have because you got a trojan horse on your computer that went and stole some personal information that you put on your compter....Delete your temporary files....this is something that will greatly help you if you have a lot of those, the system seems to run slower....also if you have McAffee privacy service...I would recommend getting rid of it...because it doesn't offer all that much protection...and seems to slow computers down to a halt....
  4. I have searched around and haven't had much luck finding anything so far....but maybe I am not searching for the correct things...I am not sure how I would go about asking either microsoft of openafs about the issue...
  5. I often times actually don't set a font...and just let the computer use its default...because user will be more likely to be used to whatever font that is, and so the website will be easier to read. A second thing is that all the standard fonts look fairly similar (unless the user has something strange set)...I find that no matter what I set a font to...there are going to be enough people that don't have it where it doesn't matter too much, so setting a particular font isn't something i generally do...
  6. I never thought of that....but why would that be the case that I could only remove the adapter when I had OpenAFS installed? Doesn't make the most sense to me.....but oh well...Well, I tired it...and that did not solve my problem....Disabling the adapter seems to fix the issue with speed of my system...so maybe i'll just sit with it disabled....
  7. Well, although more and more people are getting monitors with higher and higher resolutions....many monitors still use 800x600 (some still smaller)....and so you should gear your site to be viewable by the most people...Another thing though, that was pointed out by some people here is that 800x600 does not mean you can make your website 800 pixels wide, 750 or so would be a better target...because if you don't have your window maximized all the way, or there are scrollbars, etc.... (and also lots of people have their favorites or something open on the side, which decreases the size noticeably).Still, one of the best things you can do is make it so that your website is scalable....make it so that if you have a bigger resolution it gets bigger, but yet you can still view the site on computers with lower resolutions perfectly fine....
  8. Well it really could be a number of things....What I would do, is go to the control panel...and then to power options, and see if you can find anything relating to a battery there, and the current state of it. It is possible that the battery is dead...although usually you would notice the life get shorter and shorter and shorter....Another thing, if you haven't already, remove the battery and put it back in....maybe the connection is just messed up somehow....Otherwise, contacting HP for support is going to be one of your best options (they should provide free e-mail support for you, if not more)
  9. I personally like ubuntu the best....it offers the easiest to install...and supports so much in the terms of hardware right out of the box, especially with the new version. With ubuntu you won't have so many of the hardware issues....it is much more like windows in detecting the hardware you have, and automatically installing drivers. And if you have a restricted driver (such as for an nVidia or ATI graphics card), it simply has a little icon saying that some are available, and you click a couple buttons and away you go with the installation. As for your second machine are you wanting that to be command line free as well? (because usually servers are just command line, in order to not have to use as many resources on running the computer)
  10. Ok, I am currently using Windows Vista ultimate, and for a while I was using OpenAFS. Well the problem happened that it added an adapter to my list of network adapters that is called 'AFS' Now this would be ok, but I would like to remove it to speed up my system a little, as I am no longer using OpenAFS, and have since removed it...However, when I go to network connections, and i try and delete it. It asks if I would like to delete it, and I click ok, and then i get 'error deleting connection, the selected connection cannot be deleted'Now this connection causes me an extra 20 or so seconds when my computer boots up to start up, as it searches for who knows what...so I would like to find a way to somehow remove it.Thanks for the help,Brian
  11. Another great program for making animated gif images is the gimp. All you do is make a layer for each of your frames (and then you can optimize it through one of the menus there is an optimize for animation thing)....and you save it as a gif, and set the option to do it an animation with one frame per layer...A great way to make some animated gif images....with a great program. There is also another program I have used....free one, although I can't remember it off the top of my head (it is command line, but great for editing existing animated images)...i'll look it up and get back with that one....
  12. Well my programs that I use tend to be some smaller no name products (not adobe, and Microsoft isn't very high on the list either)...and yes there are always the games that I play...But maybe i'll see what is happening the next time I am looking at getting a computer, and go for it....What kinds of stuff are you mainly using your macbook for? (as in what are some of the more common programs you use?)
  13. I also have to agree here, that you probably aren't going to get very far with creating a 3D game by yourself, work at trying to find a team of people that can help you. Otherwise it'll take years and years (actually it does even with a team of people), and by the time you are finished, the game will not be as good as other 3D games that were created in a shorter period of time.
  14. I too feel that this is still hotlinking... Also beyond that...sites which just copy content from other sites and that is all in my opinion are simply steeling content, which is not right....now if they linked to the content, as opposed to stealing it (more like a digg type site), that is fine...but when I see all these blogs that copy my whole article constantly one right after another...i get a little mad at them...and not only that but they use a lot of my bandwidth because they hotlink all the images (just like this script hotlinks)... I am currently in the process of writing a script that won't allow you to hotlink images from my site (and so far it seems to be working fairly well, just need to make sure it is secure). Because honestly....all these sites that steal content from others sites, as their content...drive me nuts...
  15. It shouldn't be too hard to do...I would think that you could simply modify a lot of the settings in the about:config before burning it to the cd (try a portable version of firefox maybe to see if that works)....I am not sure if everything you need is going to be in the about:config area, but a lot should be...although disabling things such as internet access might be somewhat of a challenge...Somebody who knows firefox really well, including the code, should be able to give you some more specific instructions... you may even be able to get somebody to make the modifications for you for free if you ask nicely on some forums. As for an edubuntu livecd that somebody suggested...i don't know how much that would help as it is a full linux distribution and so I think you would have a lot of extra stuff that isn't needed...
  16. I have not liked HP computers....simply because whenever I have gotten them or dealt with them they load them up with tons of junk...i mean I would like a new computer that doesn't come with a ton of adware if possible...I don't need offers to be scrolling across my screen constantly...or hp updates or satisfaction questionaires...Would you recommend dual booting a macbook with windows and mac os x? Or just having os X on the macbook?
  17. Well I am so addicted to gmail at the moment....I go back to ordinary e-mail and I feel lost...I just love the feeling of gmail...the way conversations are grouped together...it makes it feel more like forums feel, where the conversation flows....rather than all these RE: such and such, where sometimes the copy of previous stuff...and even though everybody else has tons of space these days (even unlimited), gmail was the first...so I gotta hand them that.Plus my e-mail address at gmail, is nice and short, and easy to remember.
  18. Yep I am the same with dual booting windows and linus (running windows more due to software such as games that I want to play)Also, going back to the question about if I was talking about desktops or laptops, I was talking about a desktop in that case, as I haven't really had much experience with notebooks...I just bought a laptop computer a couple months ago and so I am on my first one...so we'll see how well it lasts, and how durable it is... (its a Dell Latitude)
  19. I have to admit that I haven't tried KDE in a while, but I didn't like it as well as Gnome....When I initially tried it, I liked it a lot, because it seemed to resemble windows a lot more than Gnome did on many distributions, and was easy to configure and change how it looked so that I liked it.But when I switched to using ubuntu, i started using gnome, and found it to perform better on my computer...It just seemed like it ran smoother and faster than KDE did...does anybody else notice any speed differences between the two (in either direction?)?But not too many days to go here for the official release!
  20. I have had to do that before (drag the computer closer to the router for an internet connection)....Anyway, I downloaded the liveCD beta, and it seemed to work really well on my new laptop, which is a plus (I haven't tried linux on it yet), but it did a really good job with it, so I may just wait for the official release, and then go right away and download it...although i'll have to be careful to install grub to the correct place, as I want to keep my windows bootloader at the moment... (as I have vista, and don't feel like trying to deal with issues with having grub)...
  21. Well ubuntu 7.10 is coming out soon (the final one, a beta is currently out and available for download right now if you would like, and you can check it out at https://www.ubuntu.com/ ) But I was wondering what everybody has heard about it, or if anybody has tried it? I have liked the previous releases, but should I bother with upgrading to this one, or should I just stick with the older release until the support is gone? It looks like they have done a lot of improvements in the way of eye candy for this release with 3D effects and such enabled by default. And the restricted drivers manager seems like a nice feature to have. And with me having a laptop, and sometimes hooking it up to another screen, the fact that there is a graphical screen manager thing is also a plus. So for me it seems like there are a lot of improvements in terms of features for usability and such. I so far think it is a move towards and even more usable linux distribution that has the potential to become even more mainstream than it already is. I just am continually amazed by how well ubuntu seems to be at getting things right, although I have not tried this release yet, from the description of the features it sound like it is going to be a good one. Has anybody tried the beta of it?
  22. This looks like an excellent script so far!!There are a couple things that would be nice... It would be nice if it supported double clicking on files themselves...but it is a great script at the moment...Maybe even better if it supported dealing with some types of files (such as pdf, and image files) in certain ways without having to actually download them to your computer somewhere and then view them... (like embeded file viewers of some sort)
  23. Well I don't have too many problems with PC's...really the only component I have had trouble with them failing in a PC so far is the hard drive....but I have a PC that is 14 years old and still running strong...I would still have the issue with a macbook and the software that I would like to use...
  24. Well if it weren't for the steep prices on apples I would probably go out and buy one right away....My one issue is that I have so much software that runs only on windows that switching would not be very easy for me at the moment....other than that I would probably go right out and switch....
  25. I believe that windows xp has a files and settings transfer wizard of some sort, have you looked into that? I haven't ever used it so I am not sure exactly how it works, or if it works well, etc, but it is at least worth looking into it i would think....Usually what I do, is simply transfer all my files, and then worry about getting the settings set up, and re-install any software on the new computer....so that takes a lot of time, but it is an incentive to get your documents all cleaned up so that you can easily transfer them.
