  1. As most of the members around here suggested, the @googlemail.com domain would sound a bit ackward! And no wonder Gmail is such a sweet brand, someone must've thought of copyrighting it before! But I didn't get the point of localizing it to UK! I mean Google has got one common domain for all its mail users - @gmail.com Unlike other services like Yahoo!, it doesn't use localized domains like co.uk (or atleast I didn't come across any such domain) So if Google lost rights to the @gmail.com domain in UK, then it must be in effect world-wide! So now, either Google has to sort out its users and hand them their localized domains all over, or use localized domains for the UK users (@googlemail.com) and keep the rest in peace! I surely won't like pronouncing my email ID on the @googlemail.com domain... Lets just say the Google Networks got one more problem in their hoards already to tackle with, and fast! They're not going to remain BETA forever, are they?!
  2. Can an Admin around here kindly explain how exactly the registration process works out? I know its not connected with the form we post in the forums - some Admin has to do it manually. And then, when we visit the /process page, all options can be seen - its upto our choice . Is it that the Admins first create the shell account on the server and then we go in and activate the account? Because, anyone can visit the /process page without posting a request here and click on the options. The database would return a negative result , of course - but that shows the Forum and the Process aren't integrated! So what exactly is happening when someone posts a new request for a hosting account in the forums?!
  3. Honestly speaking, Winamp isn't exactly the best player for videos around! The way its video pane comes down (in the Modern Skin, let alone the Ol' one where there's a new skinned window!) Maybe you could get your favorite DSP Plug-in working with it, but the system seriously drops on resources for that one. I'd suggest Windows Media Player® 10 or higher for video playback. In fact Windows Media Player® 11 is even better! You have all those 'enhancements' which work with most uncompressed videos. It supports most external DVD/DivX/XviD codecs for playback. Its fullscreen modes are quick(er) and more sensible (Have you ever wondered how harshly Winamp uses fullscreen?! ) Its a clean equation : Winamp for audio, Windows Media Player® for video!
  4. Kewl Design! But the LCD doesn't really fit into it, does it? Maybe it should have a projector that would display things on a nearby (rusty) wall! Its Japanese anyway, and I don't think of seeing it in a market nearby! Only the Japanese can design all its worth!
  5. Firstly, this isn't exactly the forum to post in - it better fits into http://forums.xisto.com/topic/20-forum/ Anyways, the site is pretty good, but for one thing : your copyright seems to have expired! Its ©2006! You should update that soon! Besides, is that search button at the top supposed to get on a new line?!
  6. Well, I was never dependant on Microsoft software for my Internet needs, I use FreshFTP for my FTP needs. Actually, if you're too used to using the Windows Explorer and its folder-pane interface, then maybe its fine to use it for minor FTP transactions. But if you really want to use FTP to synchronize between your server and PC, then I'd surely recommend using an FTP client meant to do that! Basically, windows just ports the ability to perform FTP transactions, its not really meant to be used solely for it. An FTP client gives you: Advanced preferences, like using passive (PASV) or active mode. Multiple connections to speed up transfers. It basically optimizes the process, which Windows doesn't. A console to see what exactly are the commands sent to the server (You can pretty much learn from it!) Synchronization of offline and online folders. In fact, no matter how much you praise the Windows GUI (I agree its good ) - its not exactly a Pro UI for TP browsing, and you'd need one if you use it pretty often!
  7. Oh my! There must be atleast a dozen such topics that I've seen revealing names of various Antivirus software (again!) Anywayz, as alwayz - I'll stick to my ever-so-good recommendation - Avast! Antivirus (Yeah, the ! is in the name itself). It can be downloaded for free at https://www.avast.com/de-de/index There are several versions of the program, you choose which one's the best for you- Home Edition : Best for home/isolated PCs. Use this if you're not over a LAN or similar network. Server Edition : If you're the administrator of a LAN or similar network, you can use this edition to protect all computers connected on the network. Must be installed on a server. Professional Edition : Even with the above free versions, you can make a little donation to Alwil Software and purchase the Pro version, which gets you a handful of extra features (not that you can't live without 'em!) The best thing about Avast! is its effective on-access protection! It has several modules which can be used selectively. Overall, comparing it with other free Antivirus software, I think is better off on features, as well as GUI! Of course, it integrates into the explorer shell and scans zipped archives, like all you'd expect from a decent antivirus software! And trust me, its far better than Norton - at all grounds!
  8. Its been a while since we've upgraded Xisto forums to IPB v2.2.1 and there still seem to be some bugs that call for attention. I'd like to bring forward one such occurence I came across - When I access my Control Panel, and see the topics I've subscribed to, I get the following peice of code on top of the page: The normal page is seen following these lines, and there seems to be no apparent fault in the page as such. I urge Admin to look into this!
  9. I've personally used phpBB on my site, and I found it widely customizable! Just browse through the (unending) list of phpBB MODs and you'll see there's one for almost everything! I've been using the CashMOD which allows users to earn cash for the posts they make (Somewhat similar to the way we earn credits in here, just a bit less complicated!) - which they can later use to buy item from the ShopMOD! Similarly, you can setup MODs on your phpBB forum to make it more interactive to your users. Every board has a theme, and yours is gaming, so you can seek Gaming MODs in the phpBB community and load it up to your forum! Besides, its damn easy to setup phpBB on your site! You can download phpBB free of cost at https://www.phpbb.com/ . You can browse through the MODs and themes to suit your style and requirements at https://www.phpbb.com/community/ There's a tutorial on how to install phpBB on your site here on Xisto, which can be found here.
  10. Well, now that you've applied to, and have been approved the Starter Package, which requires 10 hosting credits, you must be seeing your hosting credits in the form of days remaining on the index page. Its quite right that you'd need 30 credits in order to opt for the Standard Hosting Package. I'd suggest that you stock up around 35~40 credits before you apply for the same. This is 'cause- As you must've noticed, it takes a while for the Admins to approve your request. Now that yopu're already hosted, the credits go on decresing by one each day - and you don't wanna run out of 'em when they actually do approe it, do you?! Secondly, once your request gets approved, your hosting credits get reset to 5 and the ones you've overtopped are lost! So you'd be keeping it around 40 and start earning more once you're hosted! Besides, I'd also like to suggest you see the New Standard Package, they've made significants improvements in the ackage lately, which you can see here.
  11. That tutorial was excellent, Niru! You really deserve a hats off for that! I had installed phpBB 2.0.20 on my site here a couple of months ago - and it took me ages to figure out how exactly the thing works! I had a lil' problem with the authentication too - but thanks to the user-friendliness of phpBB, I was successfully through in a few hours. From my experience, I'd like to suggest the following to your tutorial: I'd like to comment that Xisto servers support SSH/Telnet remote access to your account. So you can login to your account using any SSH client on port 22 to get remote access over a UNIX server. There, you can remotely download the above phpBB installation tar.gz file and extract it server-side! That way, you save half your bandwidth for first downloading it to your HDD and again uploading it to the server! Another note - the CHMOD commands should be done very carefully, duly referring to the phpBB installation manual! CHMOD the wrong or entire set of directories, and you'd be compromising your site with security issues! It seems a piece of cake CHMOD'ing directories when you're the Admin, but its not very secure for visitors! Also, three cheers to phpBB - their installation page (install.php) auto-detects most of your configuration, so you don't need to do much about anything, just verify whether the details are correct. phpBB was wise enough to make it mandatory to do the necessary deletions/CHMODs after installation due to security issues, so you won't be left with loop holes there! Besides everything, my best of luck to you installing phpBB on your site!
  12. My favorite font is, proudly, Trebuchet MS - I use it everywhere (every-where customization is possible!) - in my mails, posts (as in here too!), chats, IMs, documents etc. Its a True-Type smooth-edged font. Its included in the Wincows® Default fonts, so I don't have to embed it in my documents, making them smaller! It looks really good, compact, and different from everything else!
  13. Thanks, livingston - that was really helpful. Now I know why this happens, but I need a solution! coming to the bottom-line, we can always blame Microsoft for it ! In the meanwhile, I'm glad to use the Bloodshed Dev-C++ IDE which works really good as an editor, but the Mingw compiler doesn't support most of the Borland Library Functions! So, I'm doing a juggling between Dev-C++ Editing, and Turbo C++ Compilation! Another reason for cursing Microsoft would be - now that I already have Windows® XP Professional with Service Pack 2 installed on my first partition, I can't dual-boo ton Windows 98 SE anymore! In either case, is there any way I can get the Borland Turbo C++ IDE to work good?
  14. I've been looking back into ol' days lately, and doing some (primitive) coding in C++, using some of those famous Borland Library Functions. So, I hooked up that blue editor (they call it the IDE ) And it wasn't a nice ride in Windows XP environment... Whenever I run that DOS-Based Turbo C++ IDE (tc.exe), my processor usage jumps to a 100% constant, and the IDE runs real slow (Nice way to prove my typin' speed is kewl! ) - I'm currently using: Windows® XP Professional with Service Pack 2 Intel® Pentium 4, 1.7 GHz Processor 256k L2 cache 256MB RAM ~768MB VM Earlier, the same IDE used to run great on - Windows® 98 SE Intel® Celeron 700 MHz Processor 128k L2 cache 128MB RAM ~512MB VM Of course, you'd expect DOS-Based programs to run real good on Windows® 98 rather than NT, but there's got to be a solution! I've tried almost everything - experimented with MS-DOS Program settings, advanced memory settings, compatibility mode for Windows® 95/98 SE, run in windowed/full-screen mode, everything I thought would remotely be responsible. And this is hard luck! I mean all nifty programs run smoothly on my Windows® XP configuration, and I'm messed up with a damn age-old Turbo C++ IDE! So much for those Borland Library Functions, but I'd still like to have a solution! Please help me out if you can, since I only got until February end to wind-up my work in there!
  15. Loads of people around here suggesting AVG, I see! But I'd recommend you to go for Alwil Software's Avast! Antivirus (Yeah, that ! is in the Registered name! ) Take a look at https://www.avast.com/de-de/index and see for yourself! Once you've seen all the awards its got, you'll be amazed at how efficient and 'updated' it can be - now that we're talking of updates here! I think the Server Edition would be the best match for your environment. I've been using the Home Edition for ages now, and with great results too. Especially, this software shows what its up to, and doesn't eat up RAM like Norton! P.S.:I LOVE posting to Xisto Forums in this new UI!
  16. Patience, guyz - all that you need! Just around 6 hrs. on the move, I guess - Xisto was upgrading to IPB v2.2.1, and in the meanwhile - we've got loads to blame! A Boo-hoo to the Admins - C'mon, you have to notify the members of the ongoing (or upcoming ) upgradation processes! At least a new topic in the "Announcements' (The way you rejoiced Ad-Free forums! ) They've been trying to put up all that was there before (and a lot more features too!) - and that would take some time, wouldn't it?! Anyway, I'm done with the criticism, getting to the real part, IPB v2.2.1 Rocks! And I especially love it on Xisto Forums! Its fun to post with an improved UI (and BluGraphix too!) Praises for a successful upgrade, and thanks for keeping up the existing features!
  17. Oh, well.. I thought this problem was related with Software! And its funny to put your headset the other way round - think of what would happen to the mic! And it isn't that bad (I'm living with it) just that its human tendancy to get what the rest of the world has : a correct stereo output!
  18. ginginca, Yes, of course - I did swap my speakers now that I have this problem (in about 3 seconds too ) - But what about the times when I use my headphones? I certainly can't wear them the other way round, can I? (I've got the mic on it!) xboxrulz, I just have 3 jacks on my motherboard (yeah, you guessed it) - BLUE - Line IN GREEN - Audio OUT RED - Microphone And my speaker system doesn't have a sub-woofer, so one of its (right) speakers has an amplifier in it. The AC IN and (ONE) Audio Cord come out of it. As for the headphones, it just has 2 cords out of it - you-know-which!
  19. I recently changed my motherboard (don't ask why - its a horrid story! ) Now, it has the audio jack(s) right onto it, with no connecting wires. I've connected standard desktop stereo speakers (2.0) to the Audio-OUT Jack (green). But, I happen to find out that my speakers are swapped! When the balance is 100% right, I hear from the left speaker! Now, besides just interchanging the physical position of my speakers , can anyone suggest me a software solution to this? There's no use working with the hardware part, since I've been through the motherboard, and there's no internal connecting wires to interchange! For your information, I'm using Microsoft Windows® XP Professional with Service Pack 2. I have installed a C-Media Audio Codec for AC'97 Audio. Of course, there's no option to swap speakers in its console either...
  20. Praises to Google, yet again! Nice to read this forum, with Hotmail n Yahoo! getting off everyone's list! I'd salute to the free POP3 and forwarding service, I virtually live off it! So I seldom see the webmail interface. But I don't like the way it caches up all its interface in webmail - I mean we're not gonna use all of it each time anyway, are we? Takes up bandwidth, and makes some of the dial-up people stare at the loading... (thankfully I'm not one o' them) At least its better than the fancy Yahoo! and Hotmail logins! Duh - and Gmail sign-in is Secure! I love this SSL stuff! Besides, it supports Digitally Signing messages, another live-off! What do you think? Is the cache all worth for the interface we get (it sure is good, i agree)???
  21. That was insane : That was at 3.57 pm (IST:GMT+5.30) on 26th Dec., 2006. I mean, what's up?
  22. I applied for membership here, at Xisto, few months ago (as you may see alongside). Soon, I bucked up credits and was a proud owner of a Standard Hosting Account. But due to unavoidable circumstances, I was neither able to administer my site, not visit Xisto forums for a long time. As the rules say, my account was priorly suspended and later deleted when my credits went way down to -30. As of today, the fact remains that I occupy myself in other activities to the extent of not being able to administer a website. But I have had an experience of posting at Xisto forums for quite sometime, and I undeniably loved it! So here I am, returning to Xisto (glad to know I can still log in with my username) - just for the forums! I have no intension of having a hosting account as of now, but I'd surely like to post in here! Boosting a level of intellect, and nurturing a spirit of social influence, and freedom of opinions - Xisto has lured me back to its forums (not the mention the loved-by-all shoutbox!)... P.S.:I am aware that I might be setting an excellent example of what not to post in here, but I'd owe up to this in the great forum waiting outside!
  23. For all this time, I've been active at the Xisto Forums. But recently, I went to take a look at the Xisto.com forums too, just out of curiosity. And boy, Even though many forums are common, I liked the feel of Xisto much more! Anyway, what was the topic title? Ah! Yes, On the forums, its the same IBP 2.0, so I saw the 'last online' field as in the last time I was online on Xisto Forums! I mean are the two boards connected? I'd like to know if I can use my same Xisto Login ID to log in to Xisto.com Forums too? Well, I could've just tried that But then I had some more doubts... If I can use the same Login ID, then it means that I can have another hosting account at Xisto too! That eventually means that I have a cummulative disk space of 150+150=300MB!!! Of course, I'm contented with my current account, but I was just thinking about the possibilities... P.S.:Xisto.com has more 'No Post Count' forums than Xisto does! How good is that without the 'intelligent' thing at Xisto?
