There Is A Problem With Astahost's Security Certificate.
Omkar™ replied to iGuest's topic in Security issues & Exploits
Well, I did a little study on your problem, Ganeshn11, and this is what I found - The certificate that you use to authenticate yourself into the Cpanel is issued to "xisto.com". But when you log in to your Cpanel, its something like "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/;, right? So, the browser thinks that someone else is using that certificate to intercept your connecctions. i.e. It thinks you should be visiting "xisto.com/*" when using that certificate. Basically, you do get the SSL security, but the certificate you are using is not in your name. Browsers think they're acting smart, but that's actually what you want to do! Even when I use Firefox for logging in to my Cpanel, I have settings to trust that certificate permanently, but still I get the warning about certificate/address mismatch every time, so that I have to click on OK to continue. Don't worry, not a security exploit, just a simple misconfiguration problem. (The above content was NOT put as a quote because I myself typed it in originally.) -
I don't get the point of 'Online OS'. Well, Google has already launched G-Drive which lets you store your files online. Now its trying to make you store your OS online! I mean, what does Google get by stealing our hard drives? Is it that Segate is Google's personal rival?!! Why store all our data on Google's Servers when we have a 120 GB HDD empty on localhost! Internet and all is fine, there will be just ONE copy of the Google OS in the world - on their servers, but is it worth all the bandwidth? There's no point in downloading the system drivers each time you need them! Next time Google has a brainwave, I think they'll steal everything, and we'll be left only with our Modem!

Good work, how did you do it? Suggestions hugely depend on the purpose for which you did this. Most likely, I see its a wallpaper. In that case, I would like to suggest a very practical thing - keep the image to the right, users have loads of icons to the left! Also, try to make the baby look up to something to the left, that way it would seem 'curious' and look more cute than ever! -Omkar Ekbote

Hey guys, I'd like to conclude this topic now.. It seems that none of you got fairly satisfactory results with profusion (well, actually, not even remotely satisfactory..) So, I was the only (lucky) one to reap the benefits of this SE. Anyways, you guys have a good time Googling and getting good enough results, while I stick to Profusion and search multiple SE(s) simultaneously. But even before I give up on this, I'd like to see why you guys are not getting it! I'm using this server from India and that quite far away from UK, I guess! What exactly could be the problem?! Well, everyone has his/her luck, and maybe there is someone who can share my luck. Keep trying, new ones... Thanks to Google for monopolizing the Search market and not giving others a chance (not even simultaneously!). Three cheers! (And one more from me) -Omkar Ekbote
-
Sorry Jeigh, cause this one didn't work out for you. Maybe you're getting routed to a (literally) remote (i.e.far away) server, hence timing out and getting slow results! But personally, Profusion works just fine for me. Its average search time (for me) is 3.42 sec. (Counted on Firefox timer). So, if you can get to it using its ns1 IP or something, try that out. Not compulsive though - I just want you to see that it DOES give more satisfactory results!!! -Omkar Ekbote
-
No, I'm talking about ALL the images in my site. None of then come up! Well, I've installed and re-installed the FrontPage Extensions TWICE. Nothing helps!
-
I know all of you are busy using (and enjoying) Google's SE as your favourite one, but you would "think again" after reading this post... The Meta-Search Technology Profusion.com is one of the free meta-search engines available on the internet. Basically, here's what it does - "Profusion.com searches multiple Search Engines (like Google, Yahoo, MSN etc.) simultaneously for the search query you enter. Then it compares all results from the various Search Engines and then sorts the results according to thier matches in MOST search engines." For Example - When you search for "games" on Profusion.com, IT searches for "games" on Yahoo!, Google, MSN (and many others) at the same time. Then it compares the results. The result that has matches on MOST search engines come up. i.e. If "Microsoft Games" was the first result on MSN,Yahoo and Google BUT "XYZ Games" was the first result in Yahoo! and MSN ONLY, and NOT on Google, then it drops DOWN the list. Hence, you get the 'genuine' results at the top and not those who PAID MSN or Yahoo or any other SE to show up their result first! I sincerely urge you to try this great Meta-SE out, and you'll be impressed (at the speed)!!! Really, its !!! -Omkar Ekbote

-------- I'd like to add another query please! No Images Seen Anywhere! I have installed phpBB 2 successfully on my server & I can properly access all its features. BUT, I cannot see ANY images ANYWHERE on my site. They simply don't come up! I desperately need help! Though my site is humorously under construction, you can take a look - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and the forum is at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (Sorry for not linking these) HELP ME!!! -Omkar Ekbote

I was just approved an Xisto account with the starter package. I explored the Cpanel a bit and have got the following problems : 1.Frontpage Extensions The Cpanel states that the Frontpage Extensions have been installed. But when I uploaded my site on frontpage at "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; it stated an error that Fronpage Extensions are not installed on this server! When I opened my site online, I can see the page, but I cannot see any graphics/images! Also, my forms and other stuff isn't working either. Please help me out and let me know whether I'm publishing to the right destination. 2.Mysql and phpBB I have created a user-defined mySql database. I put up a miniBB Board on my site and succefully created tables etc. in that database. But when I try to open the Bulletin Board, neither "index.php" nor the Admin page shows up. I keep getting a 404 Not Found error, while I HAVE successfully uploaded all required files via a FTP client (Other than FP) and I can see them in the File manager in Cpanel. Here are other details :- > MySql DB at : myloginname_miniBB > miniBB (Bullletin Board) files at : "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; >index.php at : "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; (Note:Its not in the root folder or local_html folder, it does not work there either) -*-*-*-*- So, basically please let me know the following things:1. Destination to publish site on frontpage 2. Good config for phpBB (miniBB) and MySql DB All help is formerly acknowledged. -Omkar Ekbote

This tutorial will help you getting started with using your new PC, which came with a Windows Operating System. After you succesfully install Windows (that's much of an achievement itself!), do not think that you are ready to use your PC. Actually, you're far away from 'ready' to use anything more complex than Notepad!!! ---- Section 1 : Things to install, depending on how you use your PC ---- Office Applications: Microsoft Windows DOES NOT ship with Microsoft Office. You have to purchace it separately. If you have done so, then be sure to install Microsoft Office so that you can start working on it! If you have not ourchased Microsoft Office, you can get office applications for free at openoffice.org - It is an open-source Office Suite, that is built on the Java Platform that has a GUI similar to that of Microsoft Office. Gaming Needs: Everybody knows that most latest games require DirectX, so you should consider dowloading the latest version from Microsoft's website at https://www.microsoft.com/de-de. Music & Songs: I agree that Windows Media Player is a pretty good media player with a Media Library, CD ripping features etc. But if you're bugged by its crash records, then I suggest that you download Winamp from http://www.winamp.com/. Another need is Real Player, which plays files in the RealMedia format, and is the only player that does so. You can download the player for free at C|Net's Download.com. This would give you an universal music playback compaitibility on your new PC! Internet Browsing: The first thing that comes to any Windows User's mind when browsing the Internet is Internet Explorer. But with Windows XP Service Pack 2, a browsing experience with Internet Explorer 6 can be quite nagging. I recommend using Mozilla Firefox, which gives you a tabbed interface and loads of extensions. It is free and can be downloaded at https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ (formerly mozilla.org). ---- Section 2 : Security & Privacy ---- Personal Firewall: The integrated Windows firewall in Windows XP is considered good by some people. But let me tell you that you'd need a better firewall if you're going to surf the internet real good. I recommend Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm with its Triple Dense Firewall, which is free and can be downloaded at http://www.zonealarm.com/. You may also try ZoneAlarm Pro at the same site and consider buying it. Adware/Spyware: The Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta though good, is under Beta develpment phase. Even Microsodt Windows Defender would do its job quite well. As for Adware, I thoroughly recommend Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal, which is free and can be downloaded at http://www.lavasoft.com/. As mentioned earlier, ZoneAlarm Pro includes an Anti-Spyware sub-system that works in combination with the firewall to give good results. Anti-virus Software: ESSENTIAL! Nobody can think of using their computer without an anti-virus software when using Windows OS! For a good start, you may have purchased Norton Antivirus or McAfee Antivirus. If you need a free anti-virus software, I would recommend avast! Antivirus, which is free and comes with many advanced features. A free version is available at https://www.avast.com/de-de/index, or you may purchase the Professional Edition on the same site. ---- Section 3 : Miscellaneous Software ---- Compression/Archiving: In your computing experience, you would often come across a compressed Archive, which you will have to decompress in order to use it. In such circumstances, you should keep Winzip handy. It can be downloaded at http://www.winzip.de/. An alternative is WinRAR which has a novice interface, and can be downloaded for free at http://winrarindia.in/. -------- I hope that this guide will actually guide you in setting up an optimal working/playing environment for your PC with the Microsoft Windows OS... -------- Disclaimer: I have used some links which point to the main page of the websites of respective organisations. If such (in)direct linking is prohibitted by Xisto TOS, I sincerely apologize. All products to be downloaded/tried by users at their own risk. Though there are least chances, I will not be responsible for any damage caused by using the products recommended by me. Since this post was posted on 29 May, 2006, some referrences may be invalid after considerable time, in which case the readers are expected to consider those links as broken. -------- I hope that the disclaimer has not discouraged you from following my recommendations! But I'm sure that such a combination would prove to be a good starting point for any New PC user with Windows OS. -Omkar Ekbote

Hey mediafork, the frst thing I realised when I read your post was - you use Microsoft Windows, and you keep loyalty to thw Windows OS and its components! Microsoft Windows Media Player was upgraded from version 1 to version 10 till now. And they're still working on version 11 Beta. Doesn't this give you a clue? What does Windows Media Player do? It has got a Media library, it manages playlists awfully, it has got nasty visualizations, it can rip CDs and play VCDs and DVDs. Very good, three cheers for Microsoft! But there's Winamp. It does everything that I mentioned above, more efficiently and has loads of other features too. Even RealPlayer (What you're using) is not bad. It can do the same things, properly! What's the point of downloading a stuffed up Microsoft's Media Player when you got loads of others that are better than that one? Another reason for not downloading it is that it is currently in Beta development Stage. Thus, its known to have errors. If the existing so-called stable versions of Windows Media Player crash every now & then, think how well the Beta version would crash! Trust me, mediafork, Windows Media Player 11 Beta is not worth your bandwidth of 20 MB, really. You can try Winamp instead - just 5 MB. -Omkar Ekbote (regrets for criticising)

Great question, dude! And I'll be much too glad to answer it.. What is an Operating System? An operating system is basically a program itself, which 'controls' the computer. You can say that it is a 'group of programs' that help you to interact with your computer. You see, the computer understands the binary language (0's and 1's). An OS does the job of a translator, just as a translator would translate English to Japenese when you talk to the people there in Japan, the OS translates your commands into Binary language so that the computer understands them and obeys your commands. Interacting with hardware is a complex process, for which I will write a post only after a little research myself! How were OS built and what were the languages used? The very first personal computer, as you know, was just a Pentium 100MHz processor, which couldn't do much really! The very first OS developed for the personal computer was the Disk Operating System (DOS), more commonly known as Microsoft's MS-DOS (although there were other DOS(s) like FreeDOS etc.). I really have no idea how Mr.Gates developed that awful OS. But then came 'Unix', which was written entirely in C/C++. But later on, when GUI was introduced publicly by Microsoft, its first OS with a GUI, i.e.Windows 3.1 was realased, after which the Windows family monopolised the software market. Where do things go when we delete them? When you delete a perticular file(s) manually from your OS, then it appears to be erased from the hard disk (When you see it in recycle bin (Windows only), it is not deleted, when you empty the recycle bin, it appears to be so). But you have heard right, it still remains in the hard disk. But ONLY till that space occupied by the 'deleted' file is not requested by another file. In order to delete a file permanently from your hard disk, the process is called 'shredding', which physically erases the file from the hard disk. This can be a benifit, if we wish to recover an accidentally deleted file, or a nuisance, if we care about privacy. I would like to thank you for revising my computer history and fundamentals, which I wuold have forgotton if I wouldn't have written this post! Kindly excuse me if some part of the information mentioned above is unauthentical, because I do not hold a PhD. in computer history!! -Omkar Ekbote

The best (and most) recommended antivirus program is undisputably avast! Antivirus. Its the best of all free (and paid) antivirus programs around, and here's why: It has got Incremental Updates, which means that the virus database is updated by appending new entries. Hence, you download ONLY the incremental part, thus saving time and bandwidth. Other antivirus programs like Norton (especially) downloads a huge chink of 5-6 MB each time it is update, re-downloading the same entries over and over again! That's one advantage... t has a fairly Simple Interface which uses minimal resources. Norton anitivirus eats up half the computer's resources, thus slowing everythig down! But avast! runs in the background, just doing its part when its required to. The Virus Recovery Database (VRDB) is one of the key features of avast! antivirus, which enables you to recover infected file(s) from its database. Now that's something you don't get out of all antivirus programs. I think that was enough persuaded to use avast! antivirus!! (Actually, Alwil Corporation sould endorse me for that!) You can download the FREE edition of avast! antivirus from https://www.avast.com/de-de/index (I'm not linking it here, please use your browser to get there). You can also buy the Professional version of avast! which gives you advanced 'Script Blocking' and several other 'extra' features! There's just one thing to avast!, its limited to the Windows Operating System. Although MacOS X and Linux seldom (never) get a virus, if you're keen to have an antivirus program on your MacOS X PC, then you can't get through avast!, look for MacOS X antivirus programs elsewhere. But honestly, you really don't need one on MacOS X, believe me... (Same applies for Linux, Unix too, I hope!) -Omkar Ekbote

Is It Worth It To Get Gmail ? Is Gmail Good?
Omkar™ replied to wazzupster0204's topic in Search Engines
I was shocked at the question itself! But I decide to reply it in an orderly manner... The very first mail that you get when you sign-up for a new Gmail Account says that "Gmail is different!". That one sentence is enough for anybody to vouch for Gmail! The main concept of Gmail was that its users need not have to delete ANY of their mail & be able to search through the pile of mails easily & quickly. Besides that, they group conversations together and filter 89% of the spam. That's some of the features of Gmail's Webmail console. Gmail offers free forwarding and POP3 & SMTP access. This means that you can receive your mails in a POP3 client and view them offline. You never have to view webmail again! The age-old and world-wide standard services like Yahoo! and MSN are so congested that they fail to be innovative. There are innumerable spammers on their list. But Gmail does not give its account to any spammer! Its an 'invitaion only' service. So its secure too. Its main login page is secured by an SSL certificate, ensuring provacy. Its POP3 & SMTP services use SSL & TSL services for privacy. You can trust Gmail for you privacy for sure. After all, I would suggest that you give it a TRY! In just about a week, you'll not be using Yahoo! or MSN, but writing in mail & chatting in Google Talk!! -Omkar Ekbote -
Firstly, I would like to congratulate the author of this article for an ashtonishingly great article! He/She does it safely - doesn't curse Microsoft openly & just comments on the facts cleverly. I like his/her style!. Well, its right - you have to congratulate Microsoft for one thing and then curse it for the same thing! Maybe the intensions of Microsoft weren't that bad, but it just happened (it was obvious though, as human mentality goes). It is true that you can protect a Windows PC and run it for a lifetime without ever getting infected by any virus or malware. That's exactly why anti-virus companies and firewall makes are surviving! But the point is that the USERS are to blame. They're intelligent enough to mess up Linux or MacOS the same way by not knowing anything about it! I have a solution below - All OS distributors should sell PCs with a program installed at-the-factory and configured to run just once, as soon as the user first starts his PC. It should be a tutorial on the world of Computers and internet, depending on the OS that they're going to install. It should make them aware of all aspects of the Computer. It should be done just as though people are being notified of a deadly disease and about its vaccination. It would be then, when users will know that the very first span they get is fake and they wouldn't spread it on. Its no use blaming Microsoft - their only mistake was that they started it!! If Linux would have got pre-dominance, then maybe the PC wouln't have spread to the masses so fast & users would have to get educated first in order to operate on PCs. But that is the correct way, isn't it??? -Omkar Ekbote

Firstly, no one can compete with Microsoft with their OS. Its hyper troublesomeness and unlimited bugs have unmatched competition by none other than themselves! I have seen Google integrate with many things lately. They've integrated with MS IE & Mozilla Firefox. They've got Google Desktop for Windows & MacOS. I think they deserve an OS to themselves. If Google decides to build an OS, then I'm sure it will be packed with integration. If they can do so much with Others' OS, imagine what they'll do with their own! Google's innovativeness is unmatched by anybody on the Internet. If it does come, I think Google's OS would ROCK ! Apart from the praises, I don't think Google would have any time to think about anything else for now - they're neck-deep in working on Gmail, Orkut and Google Talk. It'll be a long time for them to think of an OS and be innovative at the same time. As far as compaitibility is concerned, software developers around the world would be much too happy to switch over from Windows to Google's OS since they're fed up with Windows and its bugs & problems! Not even a month after release, and Google's OS would be the world's standard in no time! I bet Google would never hesitate to contract with MacOS or Linux for cross-compaitibility. Unlike Microsoft, Google is concerned about its customers and would not keep anything to themselves. Well, if someone like Microsoft can do it, then its a peice of cake for Google! I just hope that Google's OS (too) wouldn't be 'by invitation only' !!! (Just kidding) I trust Google that much and I bet it woudn't let me down. -Omkar Ekbote

Microsoft Windows XP logon script has (had) a fatal bug in it- When you see the new (funky) Windows XP Logon screen, it shows all the available users. 1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice so that the formal (earlier Windows) logon dialog box pops up. 2. Then, select Administrator as the username and enter Any password greater than 32 chracters in the password field. 3. Windows will give you a buffer overflow error. Click OK or Cancel and you're looged-in as administrator!!! Well, this exploit was corrected my Microsoft in SP1 and SP2. Three cheers! -Omkar Ekbote P.S.:Would anyone have the original copy of Windows XP without the Service Packs and really try this out?

I currently have 30.38 hosting credits, yet I have applied for the basic package. That is because I'm currently developing my website & I just want to check out how it works on the server. I'll be testing out new methods & experimenting in php. So, I have 2 queries : During this period, there won't be any hits to my website. So, will that be counted in the inactivity limit? Can I have a page OTHER THAN "index.htm" that comes up when someone enters my URL for the time being, so that it displays an "Under Construction" page, while since my site is on Frontpage, I need to have "index.htm" as my main page. Please help me out on this - I'm 65% done on my website (that's almost) -Omkar EKbote

I'd just like to say this : Along with fooling us into buying thier OS, which cost a fortune, Microsoft has gone one step further - It makes US purchase a high-end PC costing another fortune. It GIVES US a high(er)-end PC, which costs more fortune. So, all set to make the consumers of the world bankrupt, I don't think anyone would like to be bankrupt IN ADVANCE and be the first one to do so, even BEFORE the OS is released as a stable version (Nevertheless, its not stable then anyway)!! -Omkar Ekbote

HTML: Seems Like A Simple Problem, But I'm Baffled!
Omkar™ replied to E_B_T's topic in Websites and Web Designing
No dude, there's no problem with the HTML code, in fact its quite good! The problem you're facing is with the server. There are 2 possibilities : Either you have NOT uploaded the image on the server (or it has not been uploaded by accident) - It shows a 404 Not Found Error. Or The image being of the WRONG EXTENSION, it got scrapped by the server while publishing I think you should check whether the picture can been seen on your local disk. If you run Windows & see the picture, then I suggest that you change the extension from ".jpg" to ".gif" and try uploading the image again. Conclusion : Its a server-side problem. Either the image does not exist on the server (you need to re-upload it) or the image is corrupted (you need to check it on your local disk). -Omkar Ekbote -
A matter of $1... Once A, B & C went to a restaurant. After having tea and light refreshment they asked for bill, the amount of bill was $30. They decided to pay the bill amount on equal share. Everybody took out $10 from their pocket and paid the bill. They were yet sitting and gossiping in restaurant, Suddenly the waiter realized that the amount of their bill was $25 and not $30. He took $5 from counter and decided to return it to them. Then he thought they were 3 how will they share $5 ? So he decided to keep $2 to himself and return only $3 to them. He came to their table and returned them $3 with apology. Everybody took $1 and put in their pockets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now my question is first time everyone paid $10 Later they get $1 refunded. So everybody paid $9. $ 9 * 3 = $ 27 ..... 1 The waiter put $2 in his pocket. $ 27 + 2 = $ 29 ..... 2 So...... Where is the remaining $1 ???? Start thinking, and soon you'll return to the age when you were taught how to add using your fingers! -Omkar Ekbote

I recently viewed the homepage of Windows Vista on Microsoft's site. It says that Windows Vista can use a pen drive (USB 2.0) as additional RAM to speed up the memory. My question is that we use RAM because the hard disk is SLOW. We do have a swap file, but we don't use it much because it slows down performance! So, how can it be that the USB Pen drive be as fast as the RAM? Its max. speed is just 153.3kbps So won't that be slow too? How can that act as additional RAM? Is Microsoft trying to fool innocent buyers? This is outrageous! -Omkar Ekbote
